The food here is pretty solid. Its a great place for breakfast/lunch. They have great milkshakes as well! You cant really go wrong with the breakfast, and the burgers at lunch are pretty damn good. I stop here when I can, but I wish i would think about going here more often. read more

Food: 3.5 stars (burger: 4, fries: 3) Service 2 stars Better than any restaurant you'll find in District 9. Service was very short and wouldn't let me finish my sentence before asking question after question after question. Also, why doesn't the service ever smile anymore? Is there some sort of law in California that prohibits the staff of a burger joint from smiling? Or the staff was just being nice and I misread their alien expressions? Had the 1/3 cheeseburger combo (per the recommendation of a friend). The burger was good but not great (though they didn't ask how I would like it cooked). Definitely better than cat food. The fries were thick cut (my favorite style) but fully cooked. They needed another 20-30 seconds in the fryer and then they would have been perfect! I would imagine during rush hours, the fries would suffer even further like the poor Prawn did in District 9. The place looked fairly clean with the exception of a few salt and pepper shakers. They looked like they haven't been washed since the '81. The environment was relatively quiet (minus the TV and the random humor of the cooks) on a Sunday lunch hour. Maybe a little too quiet. You know, the quiet just before a gun fight breaks out and a mechanized suit comes crashing through the wall and tears everyone a new-one. Yeah, it was a lot like that quiet. Don't bother ordering beer or wine. There isn't much of a selection. Then again, I see no reason to wash away my experiences from this place. I'd definitely go again and try another menu item (maybe the cat food). read more

Awesome CHEAP neighborhood diner! I love this place and have been going here for over 10 years. Very nice family owned diner with friendly staff. Typical diner food, eggs, bacon, french toast and pancakes (I've only eaten breakfast here). Food is always quick and good. Great ambiance, inside and outside seating. This is the type of place I've been looking for since I've got to the Bay/Peninsula! I heart pancakes and diner-style whipped butter! Sometimes I just get a short stack and a coffee. Breakfast of champions! Ofcourse, veggie omelettes are a close second for me. But yeah, . . . I can't stand places that charge like $5.95 for a short stack or $13.95 for an omelette and some bacon. Not much has changed over the 10 years I've been a customer here. And that's a good thing. It's an affordable burger and breakfast joint, with the TV softly chattering and plenty of counter or table space for everybody. Haven't tried any of the other types of food, but the place is worth it to go in a small group or friends. I love their breakfast plates and fish and chips. Part of the place is self-service, as you have to grab your own utensils, trays, water, drinks, soups, and condiments, but what do you expect, it's a burger place! However, the place is not very clean (bathrooms are marginal at best), so that's why it only gets 3 stars. But the food is good and it's a great place to grab breakfast, brunch, or lunch. My husband and I checked this place out for the first time recently and after seeing the menu, he equated it to what we imagined "Al's Pancake World" from Gilmore Girls to be like (widely varied menu with a good chance for a stomach ache in the forecast). I had the veggie burger special with onion rings and fries, and he had a veggie omelet with hash browns. I thought my food was decent and I particularly liked the seasoned onion rings. Normally when I have onion rings, I hate the batter and end up pulling the onion out of it if I eat any of it at all. These were fantastic and didn't really require any sauce. The veggie burger was okay. Nothing special, but certainly edible. My husband's food, on the other hand, made him feel really sick. He didn't eat much of it because he didn't like it, but he complained that it was way too greasy and it spoiled his appetite for the rest of the day. The restaurant setup has a diner type feel, it is acceptably clean, and the decorations are a bit worn looking, but still serve their purpose. The staff are very friendly, and will do whatever they can to get you what you need. The parking situation in the area likely depends heavily on the time of day and day of week. The area is cute with lots of amusing places to window shop at if you want to walk a bit to settle your stomach after the meal. If you are looking for a fine dining experience, go someplace else. If you are looking for your old school greasy spoon to get your breakfast on, than this is the spot. I always get the same thing every time (Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs), so I can't really comment on their other offerings. However, the chicken fried steak and eggs is consistantly good. If you are looking to cure that thursday morning hangover and want some tasty, greasy goodness on the cheap, than Broiler Express is where you need to be. I placed an order with a group of coworkers for pick-up. I ordered Corned Beef Hash. In the pictures posted online, it looked like a full meal: a plate of corned beef hash with 2 eggs. The phrases 'if it's too good to be true, that's because it probably is'; and you get what you pay for' immediately come to mind. I believe the price was around $5.75, which I thought 'wow, that's a really good deal for a meal.' Once my coworker brought back the food and distributed it, I was extremely disappointed to find a small plastic container with 2 chunks of corned beef hash. I finished this in 2 bites. I know we are in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and businesses are struggling, but I feel extremely disappointed and misled. I used to love this place. Way back when, I worked in the neighborhood, and regularly ordered their breakfast specials, which were always great. The owner was there regularly, and her Greek platter was my absolute favorite take out lunch/dinner. But things have changed. Recently, I never see the same counter help/cooks twice and it's anyone's guess what the Greek platter will consist of. It's just whatever they can throw together at the time. We were there the other night at my daughter's request, and though her french fries were good, the onion rings were too hard and greasy to eat - and they put them on the wrong plates (mine on hers, hers on mine). We keep going back, for old time's sake. Sadly, it seems there are less and less patrons each time. If we don't have a good experience soon, I'm afraid we're going to have to give up as well. read more

I used to get very nice Greek food from the sweet lady owner at Broiler Express but things have changed with the current owner.The previous owner provided food for the Greek Festivals at one of the Greek Orthodox church and it was classic Greek of good quality. So I thought I would grab a Spanakopita to go with our dinner .My experience at the casher in an empty restaurant was that they had to refill the condiments before I mattered . Then I placed my order and he discouraged me from ordering the spinach pie saying it was frozen and it would take 20 minutes .I said no thank you and asked what had changed which made the owner none to pleased and told me to leave. I know this place serve's a lot of the seniors a good cheap breakfast but they seem to focus on little else. In a town like San Carlos that has experienced so much growth this place seem's to be stuck and not in a good way . read more

The food was eh, the board displaying what is available to order is extremely hard to read especially for people who are visually impaired. Normal menus? I ordered one pancake, sausage, and scrambled eggs. The pancake was decently sized and cooked well (it's hard to mess up a pancake though). I received one small sausage & it was a little cold. Lastly, the scrambled eggs were of strange consistency, cold, and again... a small amount. I was very disappointed. read more

I have been going to this restaurant since they have opened about 20 or so years ago. The first 10 or so years it was good but it has slowly gone downhill. The 2 owners have to work 7 days a week because the business has been slowly going downhill The use to have 2 guys cooking and 1 bus boy..I'm not trying to be funny but most of the people you see in there are older folks who have no taste buds anymore. People will sit in there for hours just to have a cup of Coffee. The place can seat 40 plus people but you never see more than 15 to 20 in there at peak times. They must be bleeding money. Don't tell me its the economy because there are at least 10 other restaurants in San Carlos that make a lot of money and are much more expensive. Yes the food is inexpensive but it is not fresh ,mostly frozen or canned and some of the things are over cooked. I really like the one original owner but his older brother suffers from a little to much attitude for my taste. So I would like to start a campaign for them to be on the Restaurant Impossible. If you have no idea what that is go to www.foodnetwork.com. They would get a free 10000.00 makeover and get advice from a top chef. The great thing about Broiler Express is it's huge variety. I'd call it a Pregnant Girl's heaven because whatever you're in the mood for, you'll probably find something close to it here. Makes it a great place for families because everyone in your party will be able to find something they want, whether it's breakfast (chocolate chip pancakes!), lunch (cheeseburger and fries with strawberry soda), or dinner. The prices are super reasonable and the taste is like someone made it at home for you - not too greasy and consistently pretty good. The line can get pretty long at lunch time so I'll call my order in for take out. Check out the daily specials and you'll get an even better deal. read more
