Cons: The gentleman informed us that sadly there were no non-caffeinated boba drink options. Seemed strange considering that they advertised a Taro boba (typically non-caffeinated) on their sidewalk sign but we took his word and skipped the boba drink we were so looking forward to. The pork sandwich was packed full of carrots and pork with one slice of jalapeño. But the taste and texture of the pork was disappointing. It was not quite ground pork but not cubed or sliced. Ordered the lemongrass pork sandwich, five spice chicken sandwich, and Vietnamese iced coffee for take out. The lemongrass pork sandwich was fine. The meat wasn't too salty-it was kind of peppery. I asked for jalapeños on the side and they weren't spicy. A sriracha packet was included in the take out bag-it wasn't spicy either, more sweet than spicy. The five spice chicken sandwich was fine-chicken was tender. The bread wasn't too crispy on the outside so that it would cut up the top of your mouth when you bite down-that I appreciated very much. read more

Don't shoot the messenger. I was a part of a meeting where the admin catered in Bunmee. And well, it became quite a topic of discussion for a little bit! My personal experience? 5 stars for the customer service - the folks at the Fillmore location have always been so pleasant and upbeat. But I concur with everyone at this catered meeting who lovingly support local SF businesses, and those who have commented here too - the desire to get big has undermined whatever authentic flavor Bunmee had that had captivated any of us in the first place. I saw lots of comments here on the serving size, price, item choices. The CATFISH was the outstanding item on the menu you could not get anywhere. The owner put it back briefly b/c customers were upset it was gone, before it went out for good. Somehow the menu became franchised/corporate, and out the door went other fun items like strawberry lychee in favor of a vanilla lychee tea that masks as a western orangesicle drink. Bunmee has been pursuing franchising, and my colleagues said the owner described in print, wanting it to be the next "Shake Shack of Vietnamese sandwiches." What??! We all exclaimed. For most local biz supporters, this is a buzzkill word. I'm sure it was a hit for investors and pitching to potential franchisee owners though! The once owner, who is now self-proclaimed as "CEO" lists themselves on corporate namesake "I am top 10 of" lists seems to be more proud of these milestones than anything else, including keeping the dear items that helped make Bunmee get on the map. I still go to Bunmee, though much, much less frequently - and always leave a little halfhearted at the more unique dishes that have now been lost to franchised, capitalist goals. read more

It has a fantastic mix of tastes and textures-- spicy jalapeño, sweet and tangy pickled carrot and daikon, warmth from the 5 spice chicken, crispy wonton chips and crushed peanuts, and fresh cucumber, tomato, cilantro, and mint! Got take out from Bun Mee recently, and honestly felt that it was average overall. A good relatively healthy meal - I got the crispy tofu bun and my husband got the belly bun. We made it less healthy with some salt and garlic fries! My bun was good but a bit dry and less flavorful than bahn mi that I've had in the past. Like the pickled carrots and veggies but maybe a different additional sauce to help. Maybe the eggplant sandwich would be more moist? The fries were good but better after we popped them in our air fryer for 5 mins to crisp them up after their delivery journey. A bright spot was the coconut cookie which was delicious! read more

On a recent sunny Sunday we were strolling with our pupper through the Fillmore/Lower Pac Heights neighborhood, window shopping, people watching and generally enjoying the day when the hunger hit. The 4-5 block stretch on Fillmore, above Japantown, has plenty of nosheries with sidewalk seating and after considering a few we landed at Bun Mee, a "gourmet banh mi inspired" sandwich joint. We grabbed a table outside and I went in to order at the counter. Perusing the menu we saw what appeared to be various permutations of a banh mi sandwich, fancied up a bit. They could be selected as-is or things like pate or an egg could be added. I selected the Grilled Lemongrass Pork sandwich for her and the Hanoi-Style Catfish sandwich for me. The fellow taking my order asked if we wanted jalapenos on the sandwiches and I confirmed. I also ordered some Sweet Potato Fries and a can of Coke to share. After paying I was given a number to bring to the table. The food came out pretty quick and right away I realized I ordered too much. The sandwiches are large and we easily could have shared one with the sweet potato fries or skipped the fries and each had a sandwich. In the end this worked out because we each took half a sandwich home, and since we arrived back in the South Bay late it was convenient to just have the leftovers for dinner. The sweet potato fries were slightly crispy, perfectly salted and went well with the side of red curry mayo. When I go for a traditional banh mi, I really care about the bread, it makes or breaks it for me and I sort of view the other stuff as a condiment. Bun Mee flips the equation, really focusing on what goes in the sandwich. For me the bread was just so-so, like hoagie level really. Both sandwiches we ordered had red curry mayo on them which added a nice tang and included plenty of jalapeno, cucumber, carrot, onion and pickled daikon. The veggies were clean and fresh tasting. Her sandwich had an abundance of tasty pork, mine could have used more catfish. It looks like they just put one skinny piece in there. In spite of this the taste was there. We both enjoyed our stuff. Our puppy got little bites of the pork because she was barking for it, and she approved. Overall this was a pretty positive first experience and I would go back again. read more

I had tried the Bun Mee location at terminal 3 at SFO a few times when I am transfer flights. I'm always happy I stop by to get one of their delicious sandwiches. During a recent visit to San Francisco, I had to try the store on Fillmore Street. I stopped in one of my last nights there and ordered the five spice chicken banh mi sandwich and an order of sweet potato fries. The sandwich with a soft interior and crunchy exterior was so delicious! The grilled five spice chicken "Bun Mee" sandwich comes with caramel mayo, shaved onion, pickled carrots & daikon, cucumber, jalapeños and cilantro. Really a wonderful meal. Came for lunch - service was fast and friendly. Got the Bun Noodle Bowl with pork. The pork was a little grainy and sandy. The noodles were coated with oil - most likely because when cooked, bun noodles clump together so they used the oil to keep the strands separate. The oily coating was definitely not appealing. Egg rolls are good. Would come back to try the banh mi to see how that is, but wouldn't order the bun noodle bowl again. read more

We've ordered from Bun Mee in the past and it's been quite good but on this recent occasion, after somewhat of an hiatus, it was pretty awful and barely edible. The steak in the Hawker bowl and in the Pho-rench dip was tough & dry, the side order of the spiced chicken was just as bad and the fried chicken sandwich was a complete disaster. It was more like a stale, flattened, limp nugget in an over sized bun. Needless to say, we certainly won't be ordering from here ever again! read more

The bread tasted and felt dry and if the bread isn't good then that just kills the whole experience of enjoying the sandwich. I had the sloppy bun which had a curry beef filling. The filling was plenty but I didn't like the pickled carrots and daikon. In fact after reviewing the menu, it was not supposed to come with those. The pickled veggies did not go with the curry beef at all. It was too sour. Another reason why I didn't like my sandwich. My partner had the crispy catfish and it was alright. It's an absolute bummer though that they took down the parklet. It's what made grabbing lunch there more enjoyable. Before it was taken down, it was lovely having lunch there with your dog. Mine this time had brown rice, tofu, cucumbers, shredded carrots, kimchi, jalapenos, and an egg. I had to douse it with Sriracha. Of course it wasn't anywhere near the freshness of the Downtown location, but it was okay. Food came out super quickly, and service was friendly. Not bad for airport food. Solid 3 stars. For context, I am a bahn mi enthusiast, I'd travel from LA to SF to try and find bahn mi gems. Today I tried their classic combo Bahn Mi, and I just have 2 words. SIMPLY DELICIOUS. The pate, mortadella and lemongrass pork complimented each other so well, I ordered extra jalapeños and it was perfect. The service was excellent, my bahn mi was well packaged, super tidy and neat. I also ordered the Vietnamese cream cloud to pair it with my bahn mi and it was just stunning. The pickled carrots were nice and crunchy and jalapeños were good, a little on the dry side though. I got the five spice chicken sandwich and the flavor was delicious. The sauce had a strong buttery flavor but it wasn't too over powering. The chicken wasn't too fatty although some pieces were a bit too greasy and too much at times.
