It appears I'm at least a year behind discovering little jewels like this Little Saigon sandwich spot. You know what got me here? Jury duty. Yep, I had a ninety-minute lunch break, so I strolled up Polk and just noticed this place next door to L&G. It's a tiny spot with two tables and a couch. Unlike the queue to be found in front of Saigon Sandwich, there was just one guy waiting on an order. A selection of a dozen sandwich choices was staring at me. There was no eyeline to the prep area, so I didn't see how they were made. I went on blind faith, and ordered the $9 Roast Pork Banh Mi (Photos 5, 6). Now I had read that prices were way higher here than Saigon Sandwich, but the reality is that they're only a dollar more. In fact, both offer identically priced combo sandwiches at $10. You want cheaper? You have to cross the bay to Ba Le in El Cerrito (review: https://yelp.to/-btrRNID4X). No complaints from me though. It was assembled in a hollowed, toasted baguette. The generous portion of roast pork was warm and quite succulent. Stuffed inside was fresh cucumber, pickled carrots and daikon, jalapeño slices, and cilantro. It was so tasty I didn't feel guilty about monopolizing a table. I called ahead on a Saturday morning and ordered the roast pork and lemongrass beef banh mi's. I was told it would take 10 minutes. When I arrived in 10 minutes I still had to wait a few more mins for it to be prepared. The owner was nice, I had a bit of a chit chat while I was waiting. Credit cards accepted which is a huge plus. I ate the roast pork first. But what I got tasted more of grilled pork. The meat and veggies were generous. But the pork was a bit dry. It needed more mayonnaise to give it more moisture. Bread was crunchy but I waited an hour to eat it and the bread got a bit dry and dense too. Next I ate the lemongrass beef. I felt that the meat portion was less than the pork. This one tasted better as the beef was tender and moist. I do anticipate on returning to try their bbq pork, meatball, curry chicken and pork belly options and maybe ask for extra mayo. read more

The only place I've seen that serves coconut noodles in California. Theirs is a surprisingly large serving. You can add lemongrass beef for an extra $5 and I highly suggest that addition. The noodles are chewy, and the combination of coconut cream and fish sauce is as addictive as it gets. The juicy beef was cooked and seasoned perfectly, yet still managed to take a backseat to the rest of the dish. I want to marry the side sauces that came with the coconut noodles (Bánh Tằm Bì). The coconut cream and Nước Chấm complement the opposing textures of the bright, crunchy veggies, chewy noodles, and soft tripe beautifully. My dog is officially obsessed with their tripe. Delicious Banh Mi for a reasonable price. This is a little hole in the wall in the little Saigon neighborhood. No frills place, which tells you the food is going to be delicious. A family owns and runs the place, and they're so kind and fun. I recommend the meatball sandwich, but my boyfriend loves the combo as well. So satisfying! Lemongrass Beef Sandwich: I know pork-based bánh mì are the most traditional, but I always love a beef bánh mì. While most beef versions are grilled beef, theirs was more like a wetter sitr fry. Still very tasty, especially against the crispy veggies and herbs. Nice crusty French bread too. Coconut Noodles: Not listed on their in-person menu, but you can see it online. If you ask in person, they'll make it for you. It was reminiscent of a vermicelli bowl, except with udon-thick noodles and coconut cream mixed in. Still lots of veggies and herbs. And the meat was shredded pork and pork skin. This spot makes some seriously good banh mi and the ladies working inside were really friendly. I stopped by because my usual go-to had already closed for the day and I needed a sandwich fix. Glad I gave this place a shot because the food hit the spot. The prices are very reasonable and the banh mi was on point. The sandwich had a great balance of meat and veggies, and the baguette was perfectly toasted. There are a couple of small tables inside if you want to eat there. I've been scouring the city for some mean tofu bahn mi sandwiches, and behold I come across another one. I've been to L&G next door and am I huge fan, but this place has really good reviews and is open later, so thought I would give it a try. The outside looked unwelcoming, and when I walked in it looked like they were about the close, but they were really nice. It was served hot and and fresh, but lacked crunch so I put it in the toaster oven when I got back. However if you like it softer it's great. The flavors worked, and the tofu was seasoned well with the sauce. I really needed Sriracha and was surprised they don't give any hot sauce, but the guy was nice to offer some leftover ones they had from their own meals, though I felt weird taking them so I just had the Sriracha at home. It was also reasonably sized, but for $8 it was a tad pricey for a sandwich. However not really much to complain about it other than the tofu side of the sandwich being blander than the veggie side of it. For something open late night, not a bad option. They are very nice and has a casual feel to it, but the quality is definitely there. Looking forward to trying it again some time! read more

I have no complaints! I was just trying to find some food. Found this hole in the spot nearby other banh mi spots ive been to. It is a couple dollar more than some of the neighboring ones but idk after one sandwich here and multiple at the neighboring ones, I might take Bo&Beurre over them. Greeted upon entry; low-key looks confusing on where to order but the workers came out quick and took my order, so they cleared up. Theres some seating and it looks clean to sit. Based on my search, I believe Bo&Beurre may be the first and only place to bring this dish to the bay (apparently, it's not even available in SoCal). The warm fatty bits from the pork belly made it extra tasty. I think they forgot the extra pâté but it's fine (wasn't charged for it). To nitpick, the pickled veggies could have been better distributed so you get acid in each bite. Otherwise, the bánh mì was solid and well-balanced, hitting all the quintessential notes of salty, savory, tangy, sweet, spicy, and umami. If I had to compare it to the other two bánh mì neighboring competitors...they're all different so it depends on your preferences. Using the dặc biệt for comparison basis: Bo&Beurre is the priciest but crafted with housemade meats. Saigon Sandwich is the best value, fully loaded but not traditional with its hard + dense "baguette" and sauciness. L&G is traditional with a light, crackly baguette but with cold cuts only, no chinese bbq pork or pork belly. You can always do a bánh mì crawl to see which one is your fav. Absolutely delicious Vietnamese sandwich shop downtown. I've come here multiple times and the food does not disappoint. The banh mi here are so flavorful and I highly recommend the coconut curry chicken and the lemon grass beef. They toast fresh bread everyday so they always have a great crunch to them when eating them. Every time I come here, the spring rolls are a must! I was on my way to Civic Center Bart and wanted to get a banh mi, but didn't have cash for Saigon Sandwich. However, I am so glad that I didn't! I stopped in here, and asked if they took card and to my delight they answered yes. The kind gentleman who took my order recommended the combo or the lemongrass beef. They don't speak a ton of English, but a little patience and you are on your way to an amazing Banh mi experience. There were a few very sweet ladies running the show, and they have your typical Banh mi selection. Given that there are literally 3 Banh mi spots within 100 yards, I can say after trying all 3 many times that each is a different experience and a different sandwich. All are good but I particularly like the combo sandwich from here because they have char Siu in theirs. I'm not a char Siu person, but the way they have it thinly sliced, not too sweet, and definitely not dry, I much prefer my combos from here now. Very generous portion and decently priced. Will come here again for sure. And their bread is soooo fresh, light, and crispy! Highly recommend because even though Saigon Sandwich and L&G are also good and close by, you are getting a different experience here that is just as good if not better. read more
