I've ordered delivery before via multiple delivery apps, but have never had such a poor experience with the quality of food. The sandwich was so dry and the bread was hard. The flavor of the pork wasn't very flavorful or tasty. The fries were sooo cold and stale. It's as if they were sitting around all day and they scooped the remainder for takeout orders. I really wanted to like this place but I feel sad this bowl of noodles, veggies, and 2 thinly sliced eggplants would cost $16. There was a dab of peanut sauce on top, that wasn't enough to mix in with the noodles. It has potential to be like the sesame cold noodles you would order from other Asian restaurants. After hearing mixed things about Bun Mee I finally got around to trying one of their bánh mi sandwiches and unfortunately I'm left with mixed feelings too. The space is nice and service was quick and friendly with typical fast casual flair. Bánh mi's are one of my favorites, and while this sando had all the right components - wonderfully sweet and acidic picked veggies, hot Jalapeño, cooling cucumber, and fantastic bread - the flavor of the meat was pretty lacking. While I appreciated that it was leaner and of a higher quality than you'll find on most $5 mi's, the seasoning was pretty flat and left a lot to be desired. For the $8 price point I expected quality but I also expected a decent balance of sweet and salty that was entirely absent. The bread tho, was stellar, with a distinct sourdough tang and big hearty crunchy outside that was good enough that I would come back and try another protein. I just wasted $7 on the WORST Banh Mi ever! Let me preface by saving that I have absolutely no qualms about spending $7, $10, or even $15 on a sandwich; a good sandwich is a good sandwich period. And given that Bun Mee is a hipster, fusion type establishment located in Pac Heights, one of the most exclusive areas in San Francisco, the higher prices are to be expected. However, what I have a problem is wasting money on a poorly made and flavorless sandwich. For those who have read my reviews, I often note that not very keen on fusion cuisine because the flavors tend to be dumb-downed in order to appeal to the general public. But lately I have been having a good streak with fusion cuisine: Curry Up Now, Bushi-Tei, Betelnut, etc, so when I saw Bun Mee on the "Hot on Yelp" list today, I wanted to give it a shot. Today, 4.4.11, I came to Bun Mee at around 6:05 PM. As soon as I walked in, an employee said, they were "closed" but then I could still order. I asked what time they normally close and he said, "Today at 6 PM, tomorrow at 7 PM, the next day at 8 PM and eventually at 9 or 10 PM" because they've been running out of things. Err, ok...not to sound harsh, but as a business owner, if you know you've been running out of things shouldn't you plan accordingly? It's plain commonsense, but anyhow... I wanted to order the Belly Bun (Pork Belly Sandwich) but they were out of that, go figure; so I opted for the Bun Mee Combo - Roasted Pork, Pate de Campagne, Mortadella, Garlic Aioli, Onions, Pickled Carrots & Daikon, Cucumber, Jalapenos and Cilantro ($7.12 including tax). When I was handed my order, juices started to soak through the paper wrapping and onto my hands which was already not a good sign. As I unwrapped the sandwich, the sandwich looked very unappetizing and sad as the only meat I saw was a slice of deli ham which was suppose to be the mortadella. The combo of meats along with the accoutrements of the pickled veggies, cilantro, jalepenos and mayo (often egg yolk based) should pop with layers of salty, savory, tangy, sweet and sour flavors. Keeping in mind that the Bun Mee Combo was fusion based, this banh mi was poorly excuted and lacked most, if not all, of the flavor profiles that a authentic banh mi has. Within minutes, the baguette was soggy and wet in the middle. The fillings were very scant; the little roast pork and one slice of "mortadella" in the banh mi got completely lost in the bread. There didn't seem to be any pate or at least I couldn't taste any as there was no hint of that rich, slightly gamey taste. The very few slivers of pickled daikon and carrots there were was bland and lacked the pungent sweet and sour flavor that I'm accustomed to. Sadly, it was a bahn mi FAIL. If you're a loyal fan and/or have tried Saigon Sandwiches in the TL (http://www.yelp.com/biz/saigon-sandwich-san-francisco) which is the BEST bahn mi in SF in my opinion, you will probably be very disappointed in Bun Mee's version especially for twice the cost. If you're a Saigon Sandwich virgin and/or looking for an authentic banh mi jam packed with fillings and bold flavors, you MUST try it! Bun Mee? BUN MEE?... BUN YOU!... and twice on Sundays!... Is anglicizing the term, banh mi, really necessary in a city as ethnically diverse as San Francisco? Oh yes, it is... especially in an upwardly mobile neighborhood like Pac Heights where the Tenderloin might as well be Timbuktu for a lot of the residents here. Somebody had a brilliant idea in taking the same sammies you can find in Little Saigon for $2.50, prettying them up a bit, and selling them in a hipster setting for almost three times more. The difference is that you don't have to trip over drug addicts to enjoy them. They're pretty good. Jamie W. had the $6.50 Bun Mee Combo, which combines roast pork, mortadella and a more upscale pate with the standard Vietnamese ingredients of onions cucumbers, and pickled carrots and daikon - all perfectly julienned - as well as jalapeno, garlic aioli and cilantro (see photo). Mine was a tad fancier and more satisfying, the $7.95 Juicy Steak, which you guessed it - contains grilled steak with the same Vietnamese ingredients plus crispy shallots, lotus root relish and lime pepper in the aioli (see photo). But I have to admit one thing as a non-Pac Heights glutton - they seemed a mite small to me to be completely filling for dinner. Good thing we ordered the Sweet Potato Fries which came in a little aluminum bucket with a red curry aioli (see photo). Jamie was a bit miffed that we were forced to have the upscale Boylan sodas, a sure sign of elitism since they do not dare offer the dregs that represent Diet Coke. I had less issue with my Diet Cane Cola since I just needed to wet my whistle. We ended our mini-meal with a $1.50 House-made Coconut Cookie Sandwich, a sliver of a chocolate cookie dessert with an Almond Joy-type filling in between (see photo). It ended not being too bad. The pineapple wasn't overly sweet, so it just added a slight fruity element. I still would have preferred it more traditional sans pineapple. The sandwich was pretty good except for the bread. The texture was a little hard, so it felt slightly old and stale. I liked the filling though. Bowl of rice noodles with chicken: $13+ Start with the good: outstanding imperial/egg roll. Really, really good. But the rest of it? Nope. Start with the "rice noodles." Way too thick, almost spaghetti. Overwhelms the dish with a bland noodle flavor. They should consider switching up to traditional vermicelli thin noodles so you can taste the rest of the dish. Huge portion of chicken on top. In my opinion way too much chicken. Flavor was 5/10, and it made the dish unbalanced. About 4 slices of raw jalapeños and three thin slices of a cucumber tucked against the sides. Carrot/daikon dropped on top. Tiny 2 ounce fish sauce in a plastic cup with a lid. They don't have the right hot sauce for this dish, so you have to make do with sriracha. I regretted getting this as soon as it came. Their catfish sandwich is pretty awesome and sweet potato fries are out of this world. But I guess this is really an "Anglo-friendly" type of place so the Vietnamese dishes are really to be avoided. Over fifteen dollars out the door for this dish is really disappointing. Overall the sandwich tasted fresh and not as fatty as a authentic Ban mee but it's missing the salty pate. The pate should be in ALL the sandwiches. I was craving papaya salad so I got it and was majorly disappointed. They added vermicelli noodles in the salad which is so not supposed to be in there at all. We have been here a half dozen times. The sandwiches are good and they use high quality ingredients. I usually get the 5 spiced chicken bahn mi with extra meat and add avocado. I have to say it is solid sandwich. I have also tried the pork belly and fried catfish sandwiches as well; both good sandwiches. Simple, fresh, healthy food in a comfortable setting on Fillmore is the home to this Bun Mee Vietnamese restaurant. First time dinning here and had the chicken kale mango salad with the strawberry lychee drink. The drink was very refreshing and not too sweet. My friends tried the Vietnamese iced coffee and must admit it was the best I have ever tried. A must try if you are a coffee lover. The salad was generous portion with a great mix of the veggies and chicken. My friends tried the sandwich and the rice bowl, they both loved it. Intimate little fast casual restaurant in the pac heights neighborhood of sf! Lovely ambience inside, great, kind service, and ample seating. Is there a local's menu anymore? I used to frequent this place a lot. But all the banh mi are at least $10 now, or more, up from $5.95 when they opened. I know the inflation hasn't been that high, and I'd like to support, but when you throw in tax, tip, health code, you're up to nearly $30 for two sandwiches. It's pretty tasty. Good selection of Vietnamese food here with a more American taste but keeps the roots of umami, sweet, salty and spicy. Prices reflect the neighborhood so be sure to carry $15 just in case you want a side to your meal. Came in because I had to wait for family in the hospital. Brought back a couple banh mi sandwiches for the hungry beasts. I'm sure that there is something for you vegetarians. Vegans may have a difficult time depending on the oils and sauces they use.
