I usually love Bungalow 44 and think it's the best, consistently good food in Mill Valley but we had a very disappointing experience that I hope isn't a harbinger of things to come there. We had theater tickets for 7:30 so I made a reservation for 5:45pm - more time than I thought we'd need but it's what was available. Lucky for us we did get there that early -- once we put in our food order, we sat there for a full 45 minutes (!) until our dishes emerged -- and only after asking a wait person (not ours) to please find out what was going on. It made for an extremely rushed dinner, with our having to wave down a waiter to get our check while two of us were still eating. What a way to ruin a nice, pricey dinner! read more

Great food, they change up the menu often and never disappoint. I've eaten here on date nights, during the holidays and even just a walk-in and sat at the bar without a reservation and every time I was delighted by the menu and the friendly not one bit overwrought staff. One time the food was over salted, every single item. Must have been a disgruntled kitchen staffer on the way out the door who decided to sabotage. That was an obvious disaster and an outlier. Why do I mention it? You shouldn't pay for food that's been sabotaged and you should alert management right away. This could have been more serious. Visit and enjoy - Bungalow44!! Returned for another try! Their outside patio area is super cute and has amazing energy. Vibrant weekend evenings! Our reservation got mixed up so they did not initially have a table for us, but they were able to work something out and create a seating arrangement. They were kind enough to serve us an appetizer on the house, thank youuuu. The hamachi and shrimp toast were to die for, such a unique and creative mix of flavors and textures! Their food is really really good. I have ordered their fried chicken to go on numerous occasions. It's the best fried chicken in the area. The reason for my three star rating is the service unfortunately. The hostess looked less than happy to greet us no smile or welcome when we arrived. Our server had no awareness. We sat for at least 10 mins with no greeting at all . I had to ask for drinks from another server close by. Our drinks sat empty a few times. Would you believe this was the home of the Grateful Dead? My wife says that whenever we cross the Golden Gate Bridge to visit Mill Valley. The hippies transformed themselves into well to do inhabitants of a bedroom community to San Francisco, still quaint. It would be a mistake to consider Mill Valley a suburb though. It is a town unto itself, with character -- but not cloying. Their film festival, for example, was running just then, all around us. I'd bet folks here have money, just less than in Silicon Valley 75 minutes in the other direction from the city, but they are more likely to be artsy than tech-y. Bungalow 44 is of this milieu, perfect for its time and place. That is what you need to know, to determine if you will enjoy it. We don't get over here that much. Our favorite restaurant, Frantoio, with its own olive oil press, closed before the pandemic. We had been to Bungalow 44 once or twice, and I had read it was redone at some point. I'm glad we tried it again, and I'd patronize it happily. We need to find a regular place for when we come to see theatre. This is a solid contender. We were seated in what appeared to be a permanent outdoor structure. So many restaurants have done that, with the pandemic, and I'm glad they have made it permanent. The floor had a slight issue; it was too bouncy whenever wait staff went by, which is better than a competing restaurant which had a ballet studio upstairs, rendering it impossible to sit underneath eight year olds who seemed giants thumping their floor/the diners' ceiling. The outdoor heaters here were powerful and plentiful, appropriate for the region, where you might need to fire them up without warning due to the microclimates and their sudden fluctuations. My wife requested it. They were cheerful about it. They even replaced a propane tank to run two of the burners. That ended up roasting my wife. She endured it as her own doing. We had four small dishes. That was ample. They were the fried oysters with slaw; miatake mushrooms with white bean purée and Marcona almonds and garlic chips; hamachi poppers, which were like nigiri sushi on black rice toasted as spheres; and Brussels sprouts. All were very good. They were fresh and flavorful, interesting but not incongruous in flavors. The service was not bad. We had to request the bread, which was about as good as it could be for something not just made and piping hot. The flavors were fusion in a sense, but so too is all American cuisine or at least what is deemed to be California cuisine. They were the sort of blending which feels unforced, not showy at all. In an episode of the hit television show Frasier, the brothers Crane are discussing where to dine out. Niles mentions the hottest new thing, a place which features Polynesian Scandinavian food. The double punchlines are: Niles explaining "its called Mahalo Valhalla" followed by Frasier replying, "perhaps there is a reason God put those countries so far apart." (Discerning viewers would note those are not countries, but they made mistakes from time to time, such as another episode with Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, which has no specific key.) The prices also were not outrageous. By the standards of the Bay Area, they were moderate. So taking that into account, this was an excellent value. read more

A perfect Mill Valley dinner! The restaurant is elegantly decorated, the staff is very friendly and the food was great. For appetizers we tried their Brussels sprouts, kale caesar, mac&cheese and hamachi. We really enjoyed all. The Mac&cheese and hamachi might be the winners here. For dinner, everyone in our party ordered different things. Seems like the steak, cod and fried chicken were the winners. Their desserts were okay. I've been here on multiple occasions and each time I swear is better than the last and I didn't think that would be possible. The staff is also so welcoming and the service is great! You always feel attended to but never rushed. They have an amazing cocktail selection and a great wine list as well. Food wise everything is absolutely delicious but if I had to tell you to try one thing it would be their hamachi poppers, trust me you'll want 6 orders after trying them!!! 1 star for the food. Zero stars for the service. Had a reservation for dinner here with my wife on a Friday night with the Warriors game on TV. So, it was rather busy with the game on, but not like all the tables were taken. First thing we noticed was how painfully long it took for our server to first take our drink order, and then take our food order. He visited our table probably once every 20 minutes. What we did notice was how attentive he was to the tables to the left and right of us. We didn't know why he was so attentive to them, and not so attentive to us. It then occurred to us that we were the only non-white people in the entire restaurant. Coincidence? I think not. Especially since both tables next to us placed their orders, ate their food, and paid their bills before our food order was even taken. My wife and I were close to just walking out on the place. But, we decided to stay given that we were really hungry. If we weren't so hungry, we would have just left. On top of this poor treatment, we weren't even checked into our reservation despite telling the host that we had one. No restaurant is worth being treated like a second-class citizen. The food here is amazing. I had the wild salmon, the filet mignon, the mash potatoes, and the truffle fries. Wow!!! The wild salmon melted in my mouth, the filet mignon with the garlic sauce was incredible, the mash potatoes were okay, not the best mash potatoes I have ever had, but okay. The truffle fries were very crispy (just the way I like them) Why did I give this 3 stars? The portion sizes were really small given what you pay (besides the fries and mash potatoes which were generous portion sizes). I feel this place is overpriced given the size of the main entrees. I understand everyone here likes the bucket of fried chicken (which is a good deal for the price), but I am more of a fish and beef type of guy, not really a chicken guy. The ambiance is amazing though, and the location is great (located in central mill valley), just super pricey. read more

Lovely, thoughtful service from the hostess and our waitress, as well as the rest of the staff. And the food was just terrific: tasty, imaginative, and original. Our charred carrots were yummy, and with a sauce that gave them a little edge. And my Petrole sole, with its grilled vegetables and sweet potato chunks, was simply magical. Finally, what they've done with the area in front, placing it under a large, see-through tent, made for a lovely and comfortable way to eat outside without getting chilly as the afternoon turned into evening. This place is not bad! We enjoyed the oyster happy hour, wine on the outdoor patio, and most of the food. It was easy to get a reservation, although they did place us at a high top outside which didn't have the most comfortable seats compared to the regular tables. The "poke" appetizer is actually not tuna prepared poke style (which can be fine) and we didn't like the flavor at all. The hummus was good though! I had the bavette steak - sort of like a steak frites - and thought it was cooked well. I just didn't like the chimichurri on top. Fries were yummy! My partner thought the short rib was fine. Service was slow and we had to hunt down our server to put an order in, get ketchup for the fries, and get our bill. Be prepared! read more

Great ambiance and decently priced menu. They have outdoor fire pit seating areas that appeared to be a fun spot to sit, but popular and likely require advanced reservations. We sat inside. Ordered steak tartare, oysters and chocolate mousse: the steak tartare was a huge miss; it was mostly cooked/browned and had very little red. As a fan of really raw exquisite foods, I was highly disappointed in the cooked steak tartare. The oysters would've been worth it in the $1 HH special M-Th 5-6pm, but they were full price the night we came and only 2 types to choose from - mediocre oysters in my opinion. The drinks were subpar. The speciality cocktails they advertised are pre-made which takes the experience out of it. Today we have dined at Bungalow 44, I invited my mom and her friend and unfortunately, we had a very negative experience with one of the waiters on the terrace. His disrespectful and arrogant attitude towards us was completely unacceptable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Despite spending a total of $350 (for 3 people ) which is ok, but seriously... at list friendly welcome atmosphere will be very nice! So sad to say how much our mood was ruined by this person! It's a shame that a restaurant with such a good quality food would allow a waiter to behave in such an unprofessional manner. P.S. I almost never complain, I don't write bad reviews but today it was really extremely unpleasant experience, If the administration has questions for me, I am ready to answer and leave my phone number in a DM. read more

We met my brother and sister in law , for the $1 oysters between 5-6, and a pet friendly atmosphere, with a wonderful setting. We had the 6 dozen oysters along with the Gourmet Burger's, what a combo, and delicious meal. Beautiful setting outside and casual. Our dogs loved the experience. read more

It marred any enjoyment of the meal. When my sister wanted to go here for her birthday dinner last night , I said yes with my fingers crossed. Our server Christina greeted us upon arrival and throughout the dinner was attentive without being intrusive. She was knowledgeable and made wonderful recommendations. We enjoyed the fig cheese flatbread, pork chop, steak frites and a delicious dessert. Eating under the tent has a wonderful ambiance. We received attention but never felt rushed. We went to Bungalow 44 for our anniversary dinner. Been meaning to try this place for a while now and I am glad we were finally able to. It's a large welcoming space, great for a date night. We ordered most of the veggie options on the menu and shared everything. We ordered the fresh garbanzo hummus with pickled vegetables olives and grilled naan, Brussels sprouts with almonds, the gnocchi with pesto and chanterelles and tomato and the truffle fries! Everything was yummy, but our favorite dish of the night was the hummus, followed closely by the gnocchi! The hummus was super creamy and the pickled veg is great for a touch of sweet/sour! The gnocchi were perfect little pillows of goodness with a super tasty pesto! Yumm! We rounded the dinner off with the chocolate mousse! So chocolatey and smooth! If I had had more space (or an extra stomach) I would have ordered the sticky toffee cake...but I guess I will just have to go back to try it. All in all, a wonderful meal! read more

We drove out from ragtag Berkeley to the airbrushed land of botox and SUVs. Bungalow 44 is a happening place for laid-back fun and satisfying food. The outdoor area where we were seated struck me as overly loud when we first entered; fortunately, our table was far enough from the center of that area that we could hear each other speak. Although it became chilly as the sun was setting, there are enough heat lamps around that everything was OK. Our server was friendly enough and relatively helpful; at the same time, the service was a bit lackadaisical. I started with a gazpacho that should have come with a spoon, but didn't. Though the runner who brought the dish promised to return with the required implement, he sure took his time in getting me supplied. My main dish, the miso-glazed black cod, required a spoon as well because of its lemongrass-coconut broth. To get my second spoon, I needed to flag someone down and (again) wait for more than a bit. The food was very good to excellent. I like what I ate and got good reports on the three glasses of wine that came to our table (an albariño, a cortese and a zinfandel). It's clear that the kitchen is...professional: everything was carefully prepared and presented, and there were no real surprises, good or bad. Dinner here isn't a big bargain: three of us spent $190 all in without ordering an excessive amount of food or drink. I liked Bungalow 44 and would not hesitate to return if the occasion presents itself. I'd come for the calm, but not for the adventure. read more

Bungalow 44 is a small classy restaurant nestled in picturesque Mill Valley. We were looking for something a bit different to finish off our trip to Muir Woods. I really like restaurants that have a wood fired grill. Here they use the grill creatively but tonight we went a different path. We started with coconut curry cauliflower with almonds and raisins. The delicate curry flavor was a nice addition to the roast cauliflower. Next was watermelon stuffed with goat cheese and spiced pepitas. The chef apparently compresses the watermelon to be a bit denser and then hollows out a hole to fill with goat cheese. The finished watermelon squares are covered with a bit of green so you don't even really see the cheese. Excellent. Probably the most unique item of the evening. Add to this hot fried green tomatoes. They were hot with a delicate batter and not too greasy. We had the kitchen split a Kickin fried chicken served with mashed Yukon potatoes and slaw. This is popular here and didn't disappoint. The chicken has a long marinade schedule and probably had one of the juiciest chicken breast in a while. The entreé was literally a half chicken minus the back. We ended with a delicious ice cream Sunday called Jim and Tom. Service was friendly and great. We sat in the room adjacent to the main restaurant which actually was more fun then the main restaurant. So if you want something a bit different, given them a try. read more

We've had several wonderful experiences at Bungalow 44. From their delicious cocktails to their hamachi and gnocchi and charred carrots, we always have a good time. The vibe outside is a bit clubby with dance music, but it's always lively and they have a beautiful outdoor space with lights and a large tent with clear walls. The inside is a bit quieter, and they even have a few seats at the bar. Definitely one of our favorite places to go to on a Friday night. Thanks for being in our neighborhood, Bungalow 44! read more

Our server was also nice and made a point to check in on us since we told her it was my husband's first visit. + Inside ambience was cozy and tables weren't too close together. + The petrale fish dish was tasty! CON: + My husband's fried chicken dinner was not good. The 3 pieces were overdone and dry. The kale side salad was just chopped kale with a drizzle of lemon juice and the biscuit was dry and crumbled when he picked it up. + The little gem salad was just average. + The shrimp and grits portion was small.
