You may not believe this, but McDonald's sold beer in the country I came from, Taco Bell sold tequila there, and Taco Bell was almost treated like a fine dining restaurant, with waitresses standing by and a kitchen preparing food on site, made to order. I come from a city called Shanghai, one of the biggest cities in China, and not just one of the most modern cities in China, but the most modern one. You may also find this hard to believe, but as far as I remember, there was only one Carl's Jr. in the whole city. And it was considered a high-end fast food restaurant in that area. Once, we ordered Carl's Jr. with the colleagues in the office, and it felt like a festival, almost like a ceremony. Shanghai has a lot of McDonald's and KFC locations, and probably more Starbucks than New York, maybe even more cafes overall than New York. But only one Carl's Jr. Interesting, right? And it was not some fake Carl's Jr. using the same name. It was an authentic one. The city also has several Burger Kings, maybe dozens, but still far fewer than McDonald's. McDonald's is the top fast food chain in Shanghai, not one of the top ones, but the one. Burger King was always much more expensive. Its burgers could cost several times as much as McDonald's. I only had it a few times when I was in Shanghai, not because of the price, but because there were so few locations. I have said before that I am not really a fast food person. Maybe I am not even much of a restaurant person anymore as I get older. The reason I had Burger King this time was simple: I was too hungry, and there was no other restaurant within walking distance. How hungry was I? Guess what. I had skipped five meals over two days and lived on water and Jell-O while preparing for a colonoscopy. The procedure was in the morning, just across the street at Huntington Hospital. Actually, I was not starving. I was not even exactly hungry. But after two days of fasting, I had a deep desire to absorb some protein. And the Burger King across the street was practically waving its hands and welcoming me in. I checked my diary and found that the last time I had Burger King was also at this location, after taking a family member to the same hospital for an ultrasound. The time before that was back in 2011, in Shanghai. A long, long memory, but still fresh. I ordered a Double Whopper with cheese. I bet I could have finished four patties that day, but I did not dare to eat too much right after a long fast. The Whopper met all the requirements of a good burger. The bun was warm, plump, and soft, but not too soft. The beef patties were juicy and flavorful. The lettuce, tomato, and onion were fresh, and the sauce was tasty. Sometimes I find it a little confusing: you can say a lot when you are blaming bad food, but only a little when you are praising good food. Anyway, it was a good burger. The Cinnamon Apple Pie was hot. Even after I finished the burger, the pie was still hot, and I liked that. It was not too sweet, but the cinnamon aroma was also not as strong as I had imagined. Team picked Burger King for lunch (they like their food fast) and honestly... BK has been going through a serious glow-up lately. We pulled up during the lunch rush expecting to age 3 business days in line, but the wait was surprisingly chill!! Ordered the Triple Whopper because if I'm eating a burger, I want it stacked like a gym bro's protein goals, and I like my protein big and beefy like it could bench press 405!!! Not gonna lie, old me used to side-eye Burger King hard, but about 5 months ago I gave them one last shot at redemption and somehow every BK visit since has been hitting!!! Service - The staff at this location is absolutely wonderful. Friendly, engaging and they keep it together even at busiest times. Food - I put Burger King burgers far above McD's, Jack's Box, and all other fast food chains in the area. And BK's still serving big burgers with all the toppings. Was in pasadena for work today and burger was the most local place to grab a bite for lunch. They have a new whopper on the menu the crispy onion whopper meal. I ordered it with medium fries and drink. Waited about 5min or less before the food was ready which was great timing as i only had 30min for lunch. The whopper was huge especially when you compare it to their rival the big mac at least thats what i am comparing it to. Burger King may not be the first name that pops in your head when you think "elevated fine dining experience", but it delivers where it counts: a delicious fast food meal. I don't know if it was because it was my first meal of the day, at 3pm, no less, or because the person in charge of the deep fryer was doing an excellent job that day (Sunday afternoon) but the French fries in particular came out excellent. The burgers themselves are also great but this has always been a trademark of this franchise. The location itself is in a corner. Parking is great and it makes it super convenient to go via the drive thru and as you exit, you can just make a right and get right back on the street heading north. 10/10 customer service from the dude in the drive thru. The employees are SO friendly and kind, which is rare for a fast food location. I usually dine in and they bring you your food to your table. The restaurant is really clean, never have any issues with sticky tables or floors or anything like that. Went to BK this past Monday so I wouldn't have to cook dinner. Ordered for two people. First person knew what they wanted and how they wanted it prepared. The "order taker" was extremely patient with me as I was trying to decide, answered all my questions. Picked up the food, brought it home. Upon my first bite I had to do a double take. was this BK I had ordered from? (order was for the BBQ brisket whopper). I could not believe what I was tasting/eating was from BK. Burger was more like something I would have gotten from BJ's restaurant or similar. That burger was so good it had me planning when I could go to get another one. Along with the BBQ brisket the sandwich had these crunchy onions that were so tasty and fit perfectly into the sandwich's design. My feelings were shared by the other person who had also ordered the same sandwich. We were both overwhelmed and in awe of what we had received. So much so I told everyone I could about this great food item. Added the BK app to my phone & thought about when would be my next time going. Well, I have to say my 2nd experience was not as rewarding. Sandwich was still tasty, but not as good as the first. Something must be said about the talent of "the cook". Obviously the first time great care was taken to present an item that would resonate and move the customer to planning their return. I applaud the manager for the time he took to prepare my order. Disgusting food in an awkward location. I havent been to BK in years, but the new fan created whoppers looked good, plus they now have pickle fries. The pickle fries held maybe 30% of the breading on, and were an oversalted mess. The maple bbq whopper was one lf the worst things i have ever tasted. Of course it looked nothing like the picture, but that is to be expected. The flavored assault on my senses was unprecedented, and I am now having an existential crisis. Why did i do this to myself? Of all fast food burger chain, I like BK the most cos it's flame broiled. I hate fried burgers! Unfortunately there are so few BKs in Pasadena area. I only get a BK double or triple burger when I go see my USC KECK doctors across the street. I rarely use drive thru. The last three times I used the kiosk to order. Unfortunately BK Kiosk does not allow you to ask for extra mayo. But this nice sweet and efficient guy named Gabriel is always so very helpful ! I don't expect excellent service at fast food chains, but Gabriel was consistently professional, efficient and friendly even when there are long line waiting for him to take their orders. I drove up and there was no one at the window for minutes. Several minutes late a person appeared but didn't acknowledge my presence. I saw him taking several orders for the cars behind me. Still not acknowledging my presence at the head of the line. He was walking around doing stuff. Finally after a long wait he came to the window to complete the transaction. Online says their drive thru is open till 10pm on Sundays but they were closed when I drove up. I waited about 5 min at the Speakerbox, but no one said anything. It wasn't until I called to have a gentleman answer and told me they were closed. I let him know online. It still says it's open, but he said if you pull up you will see the sign at the window. If that's the case, they should have at least the signs off as well and fix the online issue so no one is driving out there for them to be closed and rude. read more
