Had never dined here before and thought celebrating a 30th birthday was the best occasion to try out Butch's, but we never got to try anything. We arrived at our reservation time (7:15) and was promptly seated at a wonderful table near the windows for our party of 2. The hostess told us to enjoy and that our server "Nicki" would be right with us. My husband and I sat at our table for almost 25 minutes and not a single person from the staff came over once to greet us or take even a drink order from us. We sat watching one server (assuming this was Nicki) attend to two tables (both couples) directly next to us the entire 25 minutes. She never once looked over in our direction. We were completely ignored and to be frank, it felt VERY intentional. The restaurant was completely empty besides us and the two other tables. Before it can be defended that the TWO small tables were too much for her to be able to provide us any service.... One of the tables had already finished their entrees and the other had already settled their bill. The server absolutely had time to serve us. It was a completely disappointing and frustrating way to celebrate a birthday. To top it off, as we were leaving the hostess (one of two of whom were present at the time of our check-in) thanked us for dining with them and to have a great night. Clearly no one was paying attention or cared enough about us as customers. We will NEVER be back or support this business or Taco Bar. No wonder there are rumors of this place looking to sell. Hopefully the next owner will have staff that cares about every single customer and realizes that their staff is literally preventing people from supporting this business and giving them money. Especially when people are coming in to celebrate special occasions and looking to spend more money than the average customer. Butch: you are better than this. My husband and I came here right before restaurants closed for the second lockdown. Wow, what a good choice we made! The food is delish and the service is friendly and made our night very special. I've reviewed Butch's before, but I think visiting again warrants another review, to confirm that it's just as good the second time around. I will keep this one brief, because I have little to add. It was very, very tasty food. In a conversation with our server, I think we came to the root of why the food is so good: it's all locally sourced and prepared fresh. Even the bread on our sandwiches was from a local bakery. The flavors were crisp and strong, and most of all, clean. Erika got a grilled cheese and I got a reuben and we split plates. That has to be the best reuben in Holland, maybe even western Michigan. I think reubens are hard to nail down. Between juicy corned beef and coleslaw, reubens have a tendency to get soggy. Not here. It was fresh all the way through. The flavors only mix in your mouth, not before hand. It's an A+ version of one of the tougher sandwiches to nail. The grilled cheese was also fantastic. It carefully walked the line between gourmet and comfort food. The cheese was exceptionally high quality, and melted to perfection: gooey, but not greasy. The bread was crisp and singed by real butter, not cooking spray. All in all, it was another great meal. And despite Butch's being one of the most expensive restaurants in Holland, for lunch Erika and I walked out under $20. That's a steal. Go check out Butch's for lunch! Stopped in for lunch on Friday afternoon around 1pm. The fancier side was not as busy as the more casual side, so we opted for the fancier side. We were entertaining out of town guests, so we figured it would be quieter to talk. The nice thing about the duel sides is that they both have the same lunch menu. The menu is not very large.. some salads, soups, mostly sandwiches, and 4 other randoms (taco, quesadilla, etc.) The draft list was okay, for fall i would have like to see more dark beer. Wine list was nice, but a little on the pricey side. Didn't match the low key lunch menu prices very well... Everyone was happy with their food - The California sandwich was very good- thick! Everyone was happy and full. Service was good, but for as busy as she was.. she didn't have many tables up front. Maybe she had some on the other side? My wife and I attended a private dinner in a lower level room in the restaurant. The food was exquisite! The servers were very pleasant and knowledgeable about the food and drinks. About 15 minutes later, the server brought an appetizer, which we didn't order. We were with another couple and we each thought the other had ordered it, which we didn't. Then the server came back to the table and told us she brought it to the wrong table, picked it up and served it to another table. Then, we sat there until 8:38 when our dinners FINALLY came. Butch's used to be _the place_ for fine dining in Holland. Lately though, the food and service have become so-so and seems to lack that extra something to make the entire experience special. Our party of five (from out of town) dined-in on a recent Friday night. While it was good, it wasn't outstanding. The scallops were slightly under-cooked, the risottos (served with the steak and fish) both had good texture but seemed to lack depth and complexity. I can't put my finger on it - it is almost like the restaurant is on cruise control. Nothing disastrous, just nothing inspiring, new, or otherwise compelling enough to make a return visit...especially with other fine dining options opening-up recently. Butch's is a solid option so long as the expectations aren't for the same five-star dining experience as in years' past. And as for the $10 over retail wine list...it's laughable. Good wine is less expensive in other retail shops, so while paying "$10 above retail" to enjoy with dinner seems like a good idea, the retail prices are already high. read more

My husband and I had a terrific late Valentine's dinner at Butch's! On 2/18/23. This was our fist time eating here even though we've lived in Holland for 4 years. We had an excellent server named Sutton who gave us great service. We had a 6:15 pm reservation, and we were seated immediately in the back dining room even though we arrived 15 minutes early. When I made the reservation we were able to specify the more casual back dining room which is near the bar. We were also able to chose a low table rather than a high-top. It had Very nice atmosphere and the same menu as the more formal looking front dining room. I had the shrimp spaghetti which was delicious! Just the right amount of spice and it was cooked to perfection. I loved the spinach, artichoke hearts and sun dried tomatoes in an exquisite sauce. Both our meals were generous portions. My husband enjoyed the pork tenderloin which I tasted also. It was tender and juicy with a delightful sauce on top. We also shared the Caesar salad which was delicious with a light citrusy dressing and plenty of Parmesan cheese. I enjoyed the house Pinot Noir and my husband had a great stout beer from a Williamsburg MI Brewery. The server told us there was a Somalia available if we wanted help picking out a good bottle of wine We also shared the chocolate torte with gelato dessert which was a perfect finish to an exceptional dinner! I lived in Holland for many years and never dined here. We since moved away and really want to enjoy fine food at what was to be a fine dining establishment. Last night we ordered dinner; we started off our meal with an appetizer of beets which were very good and plated well. Then we both ordered French onion soup in a cup. The way it was presented was onions cooked in a cup with not much broth and no melted cheese. Not warmed like French onion soup is to be prepared It had a piece of bread on top of stewed onions.. Then my husband had the rib eye steak with a wine butter sauce and it needed flavoring unfortunately it was bland. I ordered the chicken dish it was a 3oz portion of chicken breast extremely dry with sauce that again lacked flavor, it had vegetables and was decent to eat. We also had bread and they were round bread balls that are probably previously frozen thawed and warmed in oven. Low expectations for this kind of restaurant. Then we had dessert; my husband loves bananas foster and we asked our server how they were prepared, she had to go ask as this was a new menu item. She returned to tell us that it's rum and brown sugar with butter made into a sauce and poured over ice cream and bananas. I asked if they flamed it and she said no. I was very disappointed, but we were both wanted to finish dinner off with the flavors. So we ordered it. When the dessert came to table it was served in The same bowl and the cooked onions known as French onion soup. It was impossible to share a dessert of this nature without dripping it e everywhere. Service was okay as food was okay. Just did not meet my expectations of what fine dining is. Needless to say why I gave a 3 star rating. Time between waiting for main course was about 30 minutes. Went here with two really good friends for dinner. Overall the food was excellent and the pairing was perfect. I had the halibut lobster special and some pomme fries. The three dipping sauces with the fries seemed house made and were delicious. My halibut was perfectly prepared and had this creamy lobster sauce. We had wine, appetizers, different entrees and even dessert. However the server lacked in any emotion what so over and seemed pushy to kick us out. She came over, didn't introduce herself, and just went through a boring lackluster routine. What would you like? What kind of wine? What entree? What dessert? Alright thanks see you guys bye. If you pay top dollar for good food I would expect the service to follow. $300 for 3 people and you are going to just push us off to the side and treat us like we are eating at iHop. No thanks. While traveling to Holland to visit friends, they brought us to one of their favorite restaurants. While initially the ambiance feels formal, the staff was very welcoming to our super casual attire. I loved how they offer an area to view and purchase wines separate from the table. We ordered cheese curds for an appetizer, a bottle of wine, and for dinner I had the filet. Hands down, one of the best meals I've ever had. The filet was cooked perfectly and although normally not a fan of blue cheese, the blue cheese risotto was a very pleasant addition. Service was helpful, kind and attentive. I'd recommend this place to everyone and may consider making a trip back to Holland solely for this place. read more

Had the Brie for an appetizer, it was thin slices of deli cheese that were hard around the edges, served with tiny slices of bread and a tablespoon of jam. I ordered the special mahi and a bottle of the pino Grigio. I was informed after a while the mahi was sold out and made a quick decision with the waitress to order a white fish and she pointed out the trout. It was a small dish plated with little mushrooms, fried little onion rings that seemed to be sitting out all day, and green beans on top of the fish. The fish was skin side up over a white creme sauce. I could eat it, but I didn't think it was worth 29 dollars. I left hungry and feeling like I got robbed. The owner needs to google Brie cheese and have a dinner a Leo's or boatwerks to reconsider their prices and menu read more

Came here while walking through downtown. We came for lunch and a glass of wine. The food was absolutely delicious. The quesadilla and the goat cheese flatbread were very tasty. It was odd that the flatbread was supposed to have arugula on it but they replaced it with spinach. Maybe they thought we wouldn't notice but we recognized it right away. I didn't mind but would have been nice if they mentioned it to us. The only reason I'm rating it a four is because their menu was very small and their wine list was too. We decided on this place for dinner relatively quickly, based on its crisp, calm, modern appearance. It had two stars in the AAA guide, but in our opinion it easily deserved three. The chef knows what he is doing. The mussels were some of the best and most tender I've ever eaten. Yes, buttery, but not overwhelming, and really delicious with the toasted bread. I was encouraged to try the endive salad, which I seldom order at a restaurant because so often the endive is bitter. But no: this was an excellent salad. The endive was crisp and carefully trimmed. The combination of colors and flavors was beautiful. The fish entrees we had were a little weaker, but all in all, we felt this was a wonderful meal that was not overpriced. Where Butch's needs to improve: service and staffing. We were there on an average Thursday night (just before Tulip Time), but for most of the time, we did not see a dedicated bus-person clearing dishes, filling water glasses, bringing bread, and being available to respond to the needs of the diners. The hosting station is very far away from the main seating area. So even though we were not there at a busy time, the diners were not as well attended as they should have been. The wait staff deserved better support. Also, I felt the wine list descriptions were silly and dated. "Cigar box" and "Tobacco" were used to describe red wines. As a female who was raised drinking great red wines, but who does not smoke, I wondered what audience these adjectives were intended for. If something is really as unpalatable as a cigar, why is it being offered to accompany such delicious food? read more

My wife and I went in, we didn't have reservations and were made to feel like we didn't belong there because of that. The restaurant wasn't busy, neither was the bar area. There were plenty of tables and we got there after the prime dining hour and well before closing time. We were seated back in the bar area. It took a while for our server to get to us, and i chalked that up to lack of staffing. It took a while to get our drinks, and that was with 2 bartenders behind the bar. We ordered the pecan chicken and the filet. The pecan chicken was fantastic, even with the overcooked pasta in the dish. The filet was horrible. First off, it was a very small, maybe 6oz, filet. The salad that came on the same plate had been drenched with a horrible dressing. I wouldn't recommend Butch's anymore. read more

Came in a bit early on a Saturday after walking around the cute downtown area. We were seated right away and ordered beer and wine. I had the lentil soup, which contained very few lentils and was more like a soupy chili, mildly spicy and very savory. My wife had an Asian style mushroom soup, which was served with dried rice noodles in it. It was mild but also flavorful, interesting. For entrees, my wife ordered the bahn mi, which came with pulled pork and pork belly and had a side of jalapeños. It was very well seasoned and had a spicy mayo, and was served on crusty French bread. I had the burger with fries, which came with classic cheese, tomato, lettuce, mayo and pickles. It was a bit rare for my taste but very good. The fries were not so impressive, but were normal, average. The ambiance is very nice, upscale and we were possibly a bit underdressed but we were also well ahead of the dinner rush. read more

This was our first visit to Holland. We came to Butch's since it was recommended by a few others. I'm also a big wine guy, so the idea of drinking a nice bottle for only $10 over retail instead of double or triple retail seemed like a cool concept. When we arrived, they'd written "Happy Anniversary" on our table, which was a nice touch (they asked if we were celebrating anything special when I made the reservation). The wine selection was pretty nice, but mostly featured newer vintages not ready for drinking (I was looking for a Cab or Cab blend). I managed to find a 2007 Col Solare for $60 (+$10 corkage), which was a great buy! Unfortunately, finding this great deal was one of the only highlights of the evening. Service: I asked our waitress to decant the bottle for us. She did, but instead of leaving the sediment in the bottle, she shook it into the decanter. Kind of defeats the point of decanting, doesn't it? I'd give this a pass at many restaurants, but if you're going to tout your wine list, staff should be trained in the basics of wine service. Unfortunately, things got much worse from there. We started with a shared plate of fried zucchini, which arrived quickly. After that, it took 30+ minutes for us to get our salads. We then waited another 30+ minutes for our filets. When they arrived, my wife's (ordered medium-well) was very well done and mine (medium) was medium-well. It took 5+ minutes before our waitress came to check on us so we could tell her. She promised to get us new ones right away. "Right away" turned out to be 20 minutes. One of the managers (Aaron) brought them out this time and was mildly apologetic. I should note that we've ordered steak at many high end steakhouses over the years and have only sent a steak back once or twice. We're not difficult diners, but this experience wasn't good. We should have known better since by this point we were in a hurry to catch a show, but we decided to order dessert anyway. Twenty more minutes passed before it arrived. Yikes! Food: I could excuse the poor service if the food was excellent. Unfortunately, it wasn't. The filets were high quality steak, but could have used a bit more seasoning. The new potatoes, broccoli, and cheese sauce (?) served with them were incredibly uninspired and bland. I can easily do a better job at home. The desserts were excellent, but by this point we were late for our show and had to shovel them down, so we didn't really get to enjoy them like we would have liked. Our reservation was at 5:30 and we didn't get out the door until almost 8:00! Total bill came to $230. I expect much better at that price. After living most of my life in Holland, and never having previously tried Butch's, I stopped in for dinner with my family and girlfriend during a visit back home, after browsing the menu in the window in downtown Holland. My basic impression of Butch's is that they are clearly aiming for the lofty goal of a $20-$40 per plate gourmet experience, but somewhat falling short. While the gorgonzola dressing on my dinner salad was tasty, the salad was practically swimming in it. There was literally more dressing than salad. For the entree, I paid $29 for the Diver Scallops dish, and for the quantity of food I received, I'm thinking I really should have paid closer to $10-$12. That said, however, the flavors and textures of the scallops, goat cheese polenta, and (!) bbq sauce reduction glaze were really quite good, and complemented each other very well. The scallops were tender and cooked just right, and the presentation of the dish was excellent. I'd be willing to pay $29 for a dish like that again... but only if I receive more than three scallops and literally about 1/4 cup of polenta to go with it. All told, though, I probably will not give Butch's another try, unless either their entree prices come back down to earth, or the quantity of food increases to match the price. read more

We had a late lunch here on a lazy Tuesday afternoon. The setting is lovely, the staff pleasant. The food was delicious, and they have a huge beer and wine selection. This restaurant is a solid four stars. So then why only three? Communication. Switching the included side salad to a Caesar ("no problem!") Incurred the full cost of a separate side salad. Asking for the anchovies to be included incurred an additional $2.50 charge (and then they were sardines and not anchovies, which I actually prefer, but jsyk). The kicker surprise, however, was to find an uncorking fee of $3.00 for the beer! Each beer! That's actually more than the beer itself cost! Look, a $6 beer isn't unheard of, but just tell me up front it's $6 not $3. All these little avoidable surprises ended up souring what was otherwise a delicious meal. read more
