So I ordered a fried chicken family meal, when I arrived I was greeted by warm very sweet staff. They made the whole situation very pleasant and homelike. So here is where it gets twisted. I get home and I have a turkey dinner. I quickly call and was greeted again by a wonderful waitress she was very sweet and welcoming to come back so they could fix the order. So I arrive they send the order back. Well the cook was pissed and u could tell from the way her interacted with the ladies when my chicken was done he slammed the tray down. I know the waitress saw me notice. She gave me a slice of pie for waiting. I think of the ladies had a bad attitude it would have made the whole situation a shit show. But they remained pleasant even tho they had a very upset cook who was swearing in Spanish. Yes I do understand Spanish. Now the food some places are good at breakfast and should only be a breakfast place. This is one of them. It was 1990's prom food. The chicken had a ok flavor but I could taste the resentment from the cook on it. I highly doubt I will be back. Maybe for a breakfast. But never again for dinner service. But again the waitresses were so sweet that is the only reason I'm giving them a 3 star if it wasn't for them they would have gotten 1 . We stayed at the Inn at Jack London Square last night and the deal included breakfast at the Buttercup (vouchers only good for FREE meal from HOTEL menu) and what a great deal it turned out to be... The wife had a great pancake combo, bacon crispy (as ordered) eggs perfect, O'brian potatoes okay (nothing special) but she raved about the blueberry struesal muffin (included) as the perfect balance of moist and crispy on top, the pancakes were delicious, and the prices seemed VERY reasonable! Service was fast attentive and friendly! I had the sausage combo ( 3 types of sausage Portugese, Italian, and ???) w/ eggs-DEELICIOUS! (Lo-carb diet for another week). The coffee was even GOOD! This is honestly the worst quality food my family and I have ever eaten! The French toast and cinnamon dulce waffles were so drenched in oil/grease that's all it tasted of. The hash browns were bland and uncooked to the point were they were crunching like raw potatoes. And finally the omelette was just plain gross, Extremely bland and off colored (grey looking). The food was ready to be picked within 15 minutes of the order being placed and seeing the nasty and low quality of the food, it makes sense as to why it was done so fast. I've been staying at the Inn at Jack London Square for the last 2 years, for 6 weeks at a time, working in Oakland, doing a road gig, down from Vancouver. I eat at the buttercup, since it's convenient and open early and late. I think there's probably a few too many things on the menu for a short order cook to be able to do right, The potato soup is normally good. At the end of every meal, the waitress comes up, presents the bill and normally I say, everything was ok, when most times it's not, but this time I spoke my mind. I'm on the road, but normally I'd be in my own kitchen with fresh ingredients, trying new recipes, going online to figure out how the real chefs do it. The staff at the buttercup is not open to criticism. Went on an afternoon when the restaurant was practically deserted. Took almost an hour to get very basic orders of food. God forbid they gave us a refill or remotely checked on us in the hour and a half it took them to get us lunch. Food was terrible and COLD when it came out. Two steps up from a Denny's for menu variety and cleanliness - though this morning my chair had butter on it that someone in my party cleaned up before I sat in it and our table had some residual syrup on it - at least I think it was syrup. I recently came here with a couple i know and we sat down to eat. Everything was going fine. We ordered our food the waitress was nice and the food came out in a decent amount of time. I was in mid conversation when I looked down and saw a bug crawling in my fries. We immediately called the waitress over and she nonchalantly said "oh did you want to order something else." I looked at her like she was crazy and told her no and to please take the plate away as my appetite was completley gone. We then asked to see the manager since she didn't seem at all affected by insects in the food. He came over and said "well the doors are open so it must have flew in" He seemed to think it was no big deal also. After telling him how upsetting it was too be eating and see something crawling through your food like it was born and raised there, he said he would take it off the bill. I'll admit a slight bias as I come here often - this is a local joint for me. I've come to know some of the staff, and it's difficult for me to come across bad service here. I love it here. The building and its decor - even though recently refreshed - reminds me of the past. A late 60's, early 70's ambiance that rocks all the way to the dated - yet still modern overhead light hanging from the popcorn ceiling. With the majestic Ellington towering over a bustling Broadway outside, it is refuge from a an ever-changing world. Not that it lives in the past - quiet captioned HDTV monitors cover news and sporting events, and a modern computer system keeps the place humming efficiently. The menu here is impressively expansive. The prices tend to be pretty reasonable, and the food in this humble diner in the one of the best corners of the universe is awesome most of the time. Free parking, but parking is tight. There are very few parking spaces in their lot which is often at capacity; spaces are single-line separation, though careful parking techniques will easily accommodate Town Cars and Avalons. However, one doesn't come here for the parking... If you find yourself in Jack London in need of a meal that won't break the average wallet, or happen to be here drinking a coffee when the sun is rising, rarely does one go wrong here. read more

I just ate here. I'm staying at the marriot on the otherside of the interstate, and working a block from the hotel. I decided to peruse yelp for a good place to get some breakfast that was within walking distance. This is the place that by accounts here, seemed to be the best option. The Modern/Deco Diner serves uplarge quantities of diner classics. I started witha biscuit, which I must say, I had better (but I am from the south so that is to be expected.) Next I had the sausage skillet. This was an insane amount of food. It would have been enough for 2 people. but it was very tasty. They were generous with chees, and the eggs and potatoes were good. If you are looking for breakfast in downtown oakland, take the quick walk over here and you won't be disappointed. read more

The Buttercup Grill is a great place to eat, especially if you want to leave full! I'll admit that I have only been there about 4 times in my approx 30 years as a resident of Oakland - but those four times were about the best in restaurant eating I've ever had. They supply you with a hearty amount of food, and they know how to COOK. The waitstaff is generally personable, and the manager (owner?) is a real nice guy (it's been a long time, so if there is a different manager there now, I'm sorry). One of the earmarks of this place, that lets you know that you are in a great eatery? The Oakland Police frequent there. Anyplace good enough for the police is great for me. That's because the police know all the dirt on a place, and it better have a clean record or they will not be eating there. Additionally, I like the added feeling of safety with all those "boys in black" hanging around! The times that I have been there was once by myself, another two times with my wife, and the last time with my whole family. Each time we were treated with graciousness and courtesy. I cannot recommend another place in Oaklnad to eat more. The only criticism I have is thay need more tables - and a way to get the word out. They are almost a secret. The reason I've only been there so few times is because I never hear about them, and I constantly forget that they exist. Went here for brunch/early lunch with my bf. Upon entering this place it screams 80s decor. The way the ceiling is, the layout, the furniture and the coloring of the walls. All. It was founded in 1988 and looks pretty much like they never updated. After we sat down, a nice waitress presented us with menus and some water. I asked her if they do half sandwiches and she said they didn't, so I ordered the cheapest sandwich on the menu hoping it would also be the smallest. Unfortunately I ordered a "melt". I think the sandwich was called avocado melt or something rather. My bf ordered an omelet. He also had some hashbrowns on the side which were not what i expected - very airy and fluffy, not flat and crunchy as you would think. But still edible. Non greasy which is good i guess. My sandwich on the other hand, the moment i took the first bite i regretted ordering it. It was a huge portion, dripping in cheese and smothered in mayo/butter spread. I couldn't even eat more than a 1/4 of it. It was so greasy and unappetizing and large. I felt like taking a bite out of a chunk of lard. Sort of. I ended up picking out the single slice of tomato and the couple slices of avo and eating those instead. I left all of that greasy bread and cheese on the plate. Needless to say i'm never going to order another sandwich from here ever. Yikes. Two stars because service was ok and the omelet was large and made my bf happy. My co-workers always seem to resort to Buttercup or McDonald when it comes to breakfast. It's great and dandy when my co-workers get take out, but when I have to get it myself I absolutely resent it! It all starts with management. Both times that I've been here to order take out, I go to the front stand (right by entrance) and the manager tells me to go to what they refer to as "the counter" which I'm assuming its the sit down bar right in front of the kitchen. My first encounter there wasn't as bad as this past visit yesterday afternoon. me: I want to place an order manager: The counter -I walk away to the counter and sit down -I already knew what I wanted so I did not get a menu from the front desk. Just my phone and wallet in front of me. -3 people has passed by me within the last couple minutes. No one bothered to ask if I have been helped or actually try to help me. Wait, I don't need their help, just an acknowledgement would be great. -The manager has made his way behind the counter now and grabs a pot of coffee and starts refilling other patrons' coffee. -I finally caught a glimpse of a middle-age Hispanic lady (same person who helped me last time) and I gave her a stare lady: What you need? me: I need to order lady: Ok (another person calls for her and she simply just walked away) At that point, I am so done with buttercup! They have so much potential. Truly disappointed because they have decent food with huge portions. They are the only breakfast place that opens at 6am besides McDonald and Bagel Street Cafe so I know my co-workers will continue to get take out there but I will never again personally step foot into the restaurant. This place is like London - you have to drive down the middle of the road. What I mean is, you can't be too adventurous because you will most likely be disappointed and run over by a limey. Stick to the basics and you will be righty-o. I got the taco salad minus anything disgusting. Just veggies & chicken - why ruin it with sour cream and guacamole. (I must veer again into sour cream rant - why do people want to eat something that tastes rotten?) One perplexing thing was that I found the beans underneath the taco on the plate. Instead of mixing delightfully with my salad they were more of a glue holding the taco down. Admittedly, it looked like my taco pooped. LoLo enjoyed her burger and fries. I'm sure she would have liked garlic fries better but Buttercup charges extra for those puppies. Maybe sometime soon LoLo and I can treat ourselves fancy and up the ante with the extras! The food's not spectacular so bring interesting people to keep up the convo and witty banter. We stayed right next door at the Jack London Inn and so the buttercup grill was the closest place to have brunch. I checked a couple of Yelp reviews prior to dining and found most people enjoyed their experience so we decided to give it a try. We found that the service and staff was excellent and friendly! We only had to wait about 3-5 minutes to be seated on a busy Saturday morning at 11:00AM. We we're seated just in time to watch the kick off of the USA vs Ghana world cup game as well which gave us some nice entertainment while we waited and ate breakfast. Our waitress gave us around 5 minutes to look over the menu and then took our order to memory which she double checked after she brought us our drinks. I had the mimosa which was good and my wife had the hot tea. After taking our order it only took about 10 minutes to get both of our plates at the same time which were hot and delicious looking. For the food I chose the Egg's Benedict with O'Brien potatoes and a side of biscuits and gravy. I generally order the Egg's Benedict when I am out for lunch and I've gotta say that this one was perfectly made. Big the slices of Canadian bacon, eggs perfectly cooked and the sauce was not too heavy. The potatoes were also perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside. The biscuits and gravy was also creamy and delicious, the biscuits were fluffy. My wife ordered the Extra Omelette which was perfectly cooked and had huge piece of avocado and sour cream on the top and inside there was a good amount of bacon in the omelette as well. Her breakfast came with the Blueberry Muffin strudel and the fruit cup. The blueberry muffin was probably one of the best I've ever had, seriously delicious. Our server was very friendly and checked on us multiple times throughout the meal to see how we were doing and offer us service and refilled our drinks. The food portions were big and we couldn't finish all of our potatoes and b&g. Would definitely eat here again for brunch and might be back tomorrow morning as we have one more day in Jack London square. Enjoy! read more

When it is busy it can go from 3 stars to 1 stars :( The best thing about this place is the cashier she is very inviting and is a great greeter and the face of the place! Some of the waitresses are hit or miss. But always the main show is the food and I can say that they have a nice selection! (I can only comment on the breakfast) I have not been disappointed by anything that I have tried I love the kitchen sink omelet and the coffee here has definitely has a mellow kick to it. This is my night time breakfast spot. I can't explain it - I have only come here at night, never at breakfast time. I've come here after Yoshi's shows, after getting off the ferry from a Giants game, or after drinking too much and playing long-distance darts while screaming obscenities. But never in the morning. Rolled into Oakland later in the evening on a Saturday night after driving up from Cambria, so didn't feel like venturing too far for dinner. Also needed a menu with tasty options for my teenage sons. The Marriott's concierge recommended ButtercuP. It's not exactly the type of restaurant we'd normally one at on a Saturday night (kind of a mix between a really nice diner and an Ihop), so we were a bit skeptical, but everyone left happy! My husband and I split the awesome mozzarella sticks - I would say these are a "must try" item. My sons, who had been craving bbq, loved the ribs (they looked pretty good), and I had a really tasty fettuccine alfredo pasta with added blackened chicken, which gave the dish a good kick. My husband's french dip looked good. We were too full to try the pie, but it looked pretty amazing! 2 days later, we returned for breakfast - even better! The cinnamon biscuit is SO tasty and very unique. Lighter and fluffier than a typical cinnamon role. My son had the french toast made from the cinnamon biscuits, which was also very good. My other teenage son was thrilled to find chocolate chip pancakes on the menu, an item that is not always found on all breakfast menus. Only disappointing item was the side of scrambled eggs. This is a diner. The first time I was totally surprised and excited about how good it was even though it looked like a place where taste-bud-challenged senior citizen's eat - but never again. It's totally derivative food. it's analogous to Lyon's or maybe Denny's except with slightly different food. That would maybe explain why people have rated it highly - one lucky experience. I live in Alameda and have gone there only when time was short to meet a friend in the Coast Guard for lunches. As for people that said this is a great breakfast spot or diner in Alameda: try Ole's, Jim's or Bip's - all have more character and consistently better food in my experience. and don't give me that "it's greasy" crap - of course it is - DINER FOOD IS GREASY. That said a good breakfast or other meal may also be found at La Pinata (yes, perfectly good Mexican food is also often-times greasy). You have been warned. We were pleasantly surprised. Planned to dine at Souley Vegan across the street, but their lines were out the door. We ordered a veggie sandwich and a chicken tostada. The sandwich was piled way high with eggplant, spinach, avocado, cucumber, tomatoes, cheese and onion. It came with a decent sized spinach salad on same plate that had a sweet dressing and canned Mandarin orange sections. They served it on the whole wheat bun which i requested. The toastada salad was huge. It came with a load of grilled chicken pieces, guac, cheese, salad stuff... A slight char taste to some of the chicken edges, but otherwise tasty. Each were under $10 Service was friendly, but it took a while to get our food, and the place was not full. There is parking in front. We were hungry and keep driving toward Jack Landon square, and we spot this place with parking lot and drove in! That was around 330pm afternoon, all of us haven't have our first meal in a day. We were sat in and the menu was many selection, look all yummy, so, 3 of us ordered 4 meals! Greek salad, prime rib, pancake combo, and, Reuben Turkey sandwich. All were very delicious, the prime rib was tender and glad my hubby share with all three of us! The pancake was very fluffy the best pancake ever ate (so i heard from my hubby). Just left after a Tuesday night dinner. I sat at the counter and awaited service. The manager and gentleman serving my side of the counter were having a dispute with a customer about a to-go order precise. So, after a few minutes, another server politely started my service. My server eventually showed up very nicely said, "what would you like?" Hi! How are you? Welcome! Sorry you sat here for ten minutes. Would all have been better. I eventually got a sandwich that was mediocre tasting, but filling for $13.99. My server checked on me and asked if I wanted dessert about 8 bites in because he was going on his meal break. He, again, politely introduced me to another young lady that was going to take care of me for the rest of my meal. I finished my food and sat there for fifteen minutes. I was just going to pay, when she finally noticed my glass empty and the dessert menu sitting in front of me. I should have know.. The banana cream pie had great crust. That was about it. The cream was that super thick, 7 day old pudding you eat as a kid because you don't know any better. Best believe I ate most of the crust because I knew nobody was going to check on me. Of course, that was the case. I go to pay. Previously mentioned manager doesn't says my total and that was it. I sign my receipt and he walks away. At least ask how it was!! You're the manager. I hate to write a bad review... I sat at the counter and was asked if I needed a menu, I replied yes, ten seconds later the server asks if I'm ready, I said no, give me a couple of minutes. 30 seconds after that she asks if I'm ready, I said NO, give me a couple of minutes. Later she asks again while she's walking by and bagging up a to go order, I said yes. She takes my order with her back to me as she finished bagging the to go order. Is that what this place calls service????? If she's too busy to look me in the face.... Then I'm too busy to give her a tip!!! First impressions sets the stage and tone for the entire experience!!!! We weren't even planning on eating here for dinner, but is just kind of happened. I had the eggplant parmesan sandwich. Not bad. The place is big. Our server was really nice. If I ever go back here, there are two things I want to try, a waffle and a slice of their peanut butter pie. read more
