My initial lunch plans got foiled, and I had to create alternate lunch plans on the spot. I had already planned on going to Kirkland immediately afterwards, so I just decided to get lunch in Kirkland as well. I chose this restaurant because it was on the other side of the street from where I was originally intending to go to after lunch. Cafe 79 Vietnamese Kitchen is located in Atcon Plaza on the northwest corner of 70th and 132nd, both NE. Of all numbers, why 79? According to their website, "it's the license plate prefix for all vehicles in the Khánh Hòa region of South-Central Vietnam", their first home. You may have an issue with parking because the lot surrounding the building that houses Cafe 79 is kind of small. The lot at the Bridle Trails Shopping Center on the other side of NE 70th is much more spacious, but because of the way that shopping center is laid out, you may find yourself walking longer than you think. Not something I would recommend doing, especially if it is raining. Luckily, I found a spot by Thirsty Hop and hopped on over (not literally lol) to Cafe 79. I was hoping to treat myself to a nice pipin' hot bowl of pho, but there was one problem: there wasn't an empty seat in the house! The last time I had pho soup was a month ago, and the restaurant at the time was just about empty, so I was surprised Cafe 79 was just about full! When I went inside, I asked to take a look at a takeout menu, which was several sheets of paper stapled together. I think they could do a little more work on making the menus look more professional, but I can let that slide. Like I said, I was hoping for a nice bowl of pho soup, but because I wanted to order to go, I opted for something else because it would have been hard to eat pho in my rental car. What did I choose? The Beef Short Ribs. They come with assorted vegetables, steamed rice, and a fish sauce, which I'm not sure why they'd include that kind of sauce if there wasn't even fish in the dish? The cashier asked if I'd like utensils and chopsticks to go with my order, and I answered affirmatively. I asked the cashier how long the wait would be. She estimated between 15 to 20 minutes. I was dreading that wait because the interior didn't have a whole lot of space, and I honestly didn't know where to stand. I chose to stand by the refrigerated drinks, but even so, servers would be walking by me that I was afraid one of us would bump into the other. Fortunately, that wasn't the case, but I sincerely hope there's a better system for dealing with takeout orders in a full house. Even more fortunately, the wait was really only 10 minutes before the cashier handed me my takeout bag. I returned back to my car, drove to my initially intended destination just across the street, and enjoyed my lunch there. The beef short ribs were perfect! Chewy and succulent just how I like them! There was an explosion of flavor in my mouth with every bite I took. I absolutely loved them! The ribs were laid on top of a bed of steamed white rice, and the leftover sauce from the ribs was used to add flavor to the rice. Some of the vegetables tasted pickled on the outside, and most of them tasted bland on the inside. The thick-cut vegetables by themselves would have been a pain to eat, but I used the fish sauce as a dipping sauce for the vegetables, and the taste was so much better! After finishing all of the vegetables, I had plenty of fish sauce left, and not wanting to pour the remainder on the ribs, I poured the rest on the rice after eating the rest of the ribs. The rice tasted so much better as well! Just like the vegetables, it would have been painful to eat the rice by its lonesome self, but the fish sauce as well as the sauce from the beef short ribs really made the rice taste a lot better! Service was good. Not super friendly I would say, but friendly enough that I could tell the entire team takes great care of their customers from what I witnessed while I was waiting for my food. Now I don't feel so bad about missing out on their pho, even though it would have hit the spot on a rainy day. Overall, I enjoyed every bite of my meal, and I'm super thankful they were there to save my lunch plans. I do believe the vegetables should have some seasoning added for some extra flavor. Luckily, the fish sauce was there to help! However, I also hope they come up with a better system for handling takeout orders. I felt pretty claustrophobic during my wait, and each minute that passed by felt like three minutes to me! Perhaps I should have gotten a drink from the refrigerator right next to me. Nevertheless, in spite of my grievances, I'm still giving the 5th star and would highly recommend Cafe 79 to anyone craving Vietnamese cuisine! P.S. This is a small local restaurant that is busy most days. They're priced slightly below most other similar restaurants. The servers were kind. We got the chicken pho, banh mi, coffee and a salad. Food was decent. Our experience was a little subpar because: 1. Floors were slippery, one of the servers almost slipped 2. Chairs and seating were a bit dirty 3. Chicken pho barely had any chicken 4. Solid 4 stars!!!! I came here once for a banh mi and didn't think much of it but this time I dine in and the food was great. The place is small, parking is limited but not too bad. The place has some typical vietnamese food like pho, vermicelli bowls, but also some uncommon ones which I'm interested in :) We got there around opening time and we were the only one there but eventually the place was packed! Bo ne nha trang: this is a vietnamese version of steak and eggs and they did a pretty good job on this. The meat was tender and flavorful and the Bread did a really good job absorbing the flavors Not many place have this dish and this is my first time having it in America and its legit :) Com ga nha trang: I think this is their version of hainanese chicken. First bite, didn't like it. Thought it was bland and dry. But once you put that fish sauce, it completely change the dish and it was very enjoyable. I still think the chicken could be more moist and tender but the overall dish was good. Looking around at other tables, their portion for pho and rice dishes are pretty good as well for the price. When we first walked in, it looked a little small. We wanted to eat in, but all the tables were filled. It's usually a good sign that the food is good, but the question is whether we have time to stay. Luckily a table was leaving and we were able to be seated fairly quickly. We ordered the crunchy spring rolls, pork rolls, Pork Bahn Mi, Nha Trang Bahn Mi, and the Pho Special. The crunchy spring rolls were fried perfectly and was so good! I really enjoyed it. The pork rolls were also very good and the peanut sauce was yummy. I love peanut sauce so I can be a little picky about that, but it definitely was very good. My son enjoyed his Pork Bahn Mi, and I tried my husband's pho special. It was really good. The broth was nice and I thought the flavor was really good. I had the Nha Trang Bahn Mi and it was so good. tldr: amazing Vietnamese food! We came in an hour before closing on a weekday, but there was a table open, so we thankfully did not need to wait. They have QR codes at every table, and our waiter was very attentive. We were craving so many things that we ended up getting 3 dishes to split amongst two people: Pork Banh Mi, Pho Special, and the Grilled Pork Vermicelli Noodles. The banh mi baguette was delightfully crispy and fresh! The Pho Special only comes in one size (large), but it gives you the opportunity to sample a variety of meats. I've had better pho before, but this was immensely filling. The grilled pork atop the vermicelli was the real star! The pork was a savory heaven, and the dish was presented so beautifully. P.S. They have a lot of milk teas here, too! But they run out of boba toward the end of the night, so try to get here a couple hours before closing if you want some! read more

We got the beef brisket pho and bun bo hue! The flavor of the pho broth is really great, better than the other restaurants we've been to! However, a little surprised that it is not the traditional thin slices of meat that gets cooked in the broth, instead a thick grilled piece of meat. Cafe 79 Vietnamese Kitchen is in the Bridle Trails area in Kirkland. It somewhat fits the neighborhood gem category. The menu has less items compared to what we typically see but also has a few unusual ones, such as Bo Ne Nha Trang, Bo Kho, and Nha Trang Dumpling. If they add a few more pho options and seafood options, I'd be happy. Their prices are in line with an Eastside neighborhood restaurant (meaning higher than ID). We had mixed experiences with the food. See details below. The ratings across the food averages to 3.5. I decided to bump them up to a 4 star for now and will give them another chance. The Food: Banh Xeo - Vietnamese Crepe (they call it pancake), $15 - 2.5 Stars The batter is on the tough-crispy than normal crispy; it gave my molars quite a workout. The flavor was ok though. Having the mushrooms directly in the batter is less common. It's kinda cute. The bottom is quite greasy. Since this is a takeout order, I stuck several oil-absorbing sheets (think tempura sheet liners) underneath to absorb the excess oil. Better, but still greasy. Pho Special, $16 - 3.5 Stars For the meat lover, this is your dish. It has marinated beef brisket slow cooked for seven hours, flank mignon, meat ball, and tendon in beef broth. The beef brisket looked dry in the container; we stuck them into the bottom of the broth to soften the pieces. The broth is not as flavorful as others have said. Even the color is lighter than the online image (see my photo). It didn't taste as beefy as I would have wanted. Papaya salad with Grilled Shrimp, $11 - 4.5 Stars This is a good portion nearly an entrée size in the appetizer menu. For the small appetite or not that hungry, this would be an excellent dish. Wow!!!! The pho beef broth is so memorable! Some of the best broth I have ever tasted. Meat balls, brisket and tendons were really yummy! They use a thin rice pho noodle. Everything in the pho and toppings (bean sprouts, slices of jalapeño and Thai basil was fresh) We also ordered the Vietnamese sizzling crepe (Ban xeo) was tasty and crunchy but I've had better. The herbs and lettuce was very fresh, but more lettuce to wrap the crepe would be better. We also really enjoyed Fresh Spring Rolls Ninh Hoa dish (2Rolls Seasoned grilled minced pork wrapped in rice paper, pickle carrot, cilantro, lettuce, noodles, and basil. Served with peanut sauce.). We have been driving by this shop for months but haven't sat down in the restaurant until now. We finally came in on Mother's Day to grab some light dinner. We ordered several dishes including a couple of grilled pork banh mis, noodle salad chicken phó, grilled pork chop and beef stew (with carrots?). The food was all delicious (I tasted all the other dishes); everybody had great things to say about the tastiness of each dish. The service was on point. Very nice and attentive staff. The restaurant is not too large; maybe enough space for 2-dozen customers to sit down comfortably. The portions are not huge (just enough) but the quality ingredients and care in preparation made up for it. I would recommend that anyone give this place a try. I believe this is one of the newest Viet places that has opened up recently, but long story short, there is definitely room for improvement. Everything tasted mild; it's like they (and many other average places) are afraid of doing the real, full-flavored thing. I'm willing to give it another fair shot in the future but I'm wary. Viet Iced Coffee (cafe sua da) - Hard to really butcher, but this was the best item of my order. Pork Egg Rolls (cha gio) - If I closed my eyes it tasted like a Chinese egg roll. The mixture of ingredients just didn't seem traditional. Pho - The broth usually makes or breaks the dish, and in this case it was too light and lacked the denser punch of flavor. Trying to add more depth via hoisin sauce didn't help much. I also hope they can offer sriracha in the future, because whatever hot sauce I got is not the way to go with pho. The "special" offers a variety of meats, including my preferred brisket, but I couldn't overlook the broth. Vermicelli and Grilled Pork (bun thit nuong) - The pork wasn't as lean. The flavor was light again, and could've used more char grill. The most offensive thing was the small portioned, watered-down, overly sweetened fish sauce. read more
