Cafe Brussels was a nice surprise! The day was muggy and raining but the place reminded me of some of the cafes in Europe. It was close to closing time and the waitress kept ignoring, like that was supposed to make us walk out. We had to walk to the kitchen and knock so that she could come out again. She then asked Oh you want to order? Great start ...riiiigght. I ordered the curry egg salad sandwhich and for dessert we had the vanilla ice cream with Belgium chocolate. Was it the best sandwhich I ever tasted, I mean a sandwhich is a sandwhich? The bread tasted fresh and the fries were the best fries I have ever tasted. I was excited to try that place but was disappointed. I'm French and I tried the chicken in puff pastry. The pastry, sauce and veggies were very good. The pieces of white chicken looked like canned chicken. Not the fresh kind! My friend , also French, tried the mussels marinière. The mussels were good but the sauce was not the tasty marinière sauce we've had in France before. There was a ton of onions in it. Not the light creamy kind with shallots, wine and herbs. Too bad. The dessert was Cafe Liégeois. Again disappointed. Basically coffee ice cream topped with whipped cream. For $9!! We might try this place again with different dishes. I was thinking of a sidewalk bistro, but inside was what remains of a dreary old bar. The furniture is eclectic, and it seems that no 2 chairs are alike. I looked around the room, wondering how many bar fights had happened here before, how many hearts were broken, and how many bad decisions were made in the wee hours of the night. Anyways, I thought if I was in a Belgian cafe I should try their Belgian waffle, so I ordered the dame blanche, mistakenly thinking it was a was a Belgian waffle with vanilla ice cream and Belgian chocolate (more on that later). My friend got les croquettes de crevettes (shrimp croquettes). The server returned with some bread and butter, and the croquettes came out soon after. I thought they were pretty good because they had very few little pieces of shrimp. My friend was disappointed, as she was hoping for more shrimp. I liked the filling, which tasted like mashed parsnip, yum! We were waiting for quite some time, then I went to follow up on the "waffle", and found out the waiter thought we were sharing everything, and was waiting for us to finish the appetizer before turning in the dessert order. Good thing I asked! After about five minutes, the waiter came over bearing the same Blanche, which is basically like a sundae, but the chocolate sauce was just fantastic. Little bit bummed that I read the menu wrong, and was expecting a waffle under the ice cream. I kept digging around, hoping someone might've dropped a few pieces in there somehow. I also wish they had used French vanilla ice cream, instead of what looked like Bluebell vanilla ice cream. My friend had gotten La Crêpe Normande Flambée au Calvados, which is a caramelized apple crêpe with calvados, topped with vanilla ice cream. She was a bit disappointed, as she was expecting a very thin pancake, but instead got what was similar in thickness to an American pancake. It didn't taste bad, just not what she had in mind. My girlfriend and I stopped by the Cafe Brussels for dinner last night, a place I've driven by several times since it opened and always wanted to try. It did not disappoint. First off, the ambience is very European, almost like a more upscale version of a pub with Belgian memorabilia all around the rather surprisingly large interior. We were greeted by the owner Catherine who was very friendly and welcoming. She clearly has put a lot of love into this place. A charming older gentleman plays accordion on Wednesday nights, and we're told there's a cabaret night with a singer as well. It's not overly loud, just perfect and unlike anything you'll find in Houston. We started with the Steamed Mussels with White Wine. I've been to Brussels once, and not to make sweeping generalizations about the cuisine there, but I wasn't exactly blown away with the mussels I had there. It's not an exaggeration to say that these mussels were far better than those I had in Belgium. The white wine sauce was a perfect complement, and the portions were massive for an appetizer. I had the Le Pain du Viande (Meat Loaf, Sweet Red Cabbage and Potatoes). The sauce on the main was incredibly flavorful, I've never had meatloaf like this. The potatoes, at your option, come in this hush puppy-esque fried encasing that works really well with the meatloaf. The highlight, however, and I never expected this, was the red cabbage. Served hot, the side was indeed sweet and seasoned perfectly. Together this made for a dish that really transported me back to travels in Europe and, together with the homey ambience, an absolutely satisfying experience. We'll be back soon! read more

Came to Cafe Brussels for Brunch one Sunday and was not disappointed. This place seems to be a family owned restaurant with apparently the largest selection of Belgian brews on tap. My hubs and I both opted for the prix fixe brunch menus. The shrimp croquettes were so delicious, and the mussels are HUGE. Literally the biggest mussels either of us have ever seen. We had to ask the owner who his supplier is and he happily informed us that he gets them from Seattle and they're Mediterranean mussels. What we'll do with that information, I don't know, but man they were amazing and we just had to ask! My husband's 3rd course was the creme brûlée which, if I'm being honest, wasn't the best I've had. However, I ordered the Nutella crepe and my world. was. rocked. My only critique is that we ordered our food, and 2 different people came back to our table twice to ask my husband which hot pot of mussels he ordered. My mussels were already brought to the table and he got his about 10 minutes later, so I felt bad eating without him. The atmosphere is casual, perfect date night spot. The servers we're friendly and helpful. They have a proper assortment of Belgian ales on tap and bottle. Including my wife's favourite, Lambic. After our first taste of the cuisine, we were instantly transported to the Christmas markets in Brugge. Authentic taste, quality ingredients, an absolutely a treat! I had the tenderloin served with pomme frites (homemade mayonnaise for dipping) and green beans. My wife had the Flemish beef stew also with pomme frites. The tenderloin was cooked to perfection and spiced brilliantly. I had a bite of the stew as well, fantastic! If you haven't ventured to this gem yet, go now (or this weekend)! Great food, great place, great price. This is a very good restaurant that serves some of the best authentic food in town. I went there on the recommendation that they serve the best crocque madame in Houston and I was not disappointed. It was the best I've had outside of Paris. It is my go-to place for French and Belgian food and I especially like to go for brunch on the weekends because the coffee is so good. The restaurant has a great ambiance and outdoor seating for nice days. The staff is very nice and attentive. I was greeted with an enthusiastic, "Bonjour!" It reminded me so much of a cafe I like in Paris I almost started ordering in French. What makes it even more fun is that you can order in English or French and they will take great care of you either way. read more

I do not understand how this bistro gets 4 stars! Looking at the Yelp reviews, I visited this bistro on June 17th for dinner with great hope of some good European food and service. How shockingly disappointed I was. 1. The food was absolutely horrible. I have never eaten a more poor dinner in my whole life and paid $86 approx. for it. The mussels are drowned in generic pasta bottle sauces and tiny and lean. The German sausage was served to us burnt and chopped and served as if we are there for a soup kitchen dinner - just dumped over a bowl of mashed something. 2. The serving ware is absolutely pathetic. My cutlery set was not even cleaned and had butter grease all over it. The appetizer and main dinner plates were chipped and faded and the silverware was disappointingly unclean. There was just one waiter and one water bearer who was running all over the place trying to please every customer. One piece of advice for the management, if you are trying to run a decent business, invest and update your services to a decent standard. It makes no sense to charge $25/plate if you think its okay to serve your unpalatable food on trashy means. read more

Best mussels in town! Would recommend the mussels as a main course. We also enjoyed an outstanding, flavorful Flemish stew. This place has authentic Belgian beers on draught, including hard to find local gems like La Chouffe and Maredsous. You could easily come just for the beer. Ah, those Belgian Trappist monks knew how to brew! I like the location of this place too. It's in an area near downtown that has seen a lot of recent development and is a nice addition to the neighborhood. Note: there is parking in a small lot in the back of the restaurant but street parking is also ridiculously easy in this area. read more

I was afraid that the trout with almond would be too left-field for me, but the sauce is delicate and compliments the fish well. The light fry on the trout is very tastefully balanced as well. The trout melts in the mouth and is perfectly cooked, the color of dark meat on a light fowl. The fry on the croquettes is beyond my taste, but that's not surprising, and still it's nowhere near as overdone as American style. And it makes them go GREAT with the uncompromisingly strong and flavorful Belgian beers. The beer selection is amazing -- I've rarely seen drafts of this quality (though limited to a Belgian theme). There's even a flight option so you can sample exotic foreign beers that you might have eschewed elsewhere, or split with your table. I wish I liked mussels -- I bet there's hardly another preparation like this in Houston. Brussels does Belgian to a T. Even has French-language covers of American hits and homemade mayonnaise with the fries and croquettes. The only thing missing is cigarette smoke (although that might be my aging memory). There were several tables of foreigners, ex-pats, and world travelers here, and I'm not at all surprised that it serves as comfort food for them. Having lived in France for three years, I can see how Continentals would miss a more legit Euro experience while in Houston. The four-stars is a ding for the price and just personal preference -- I'm not going to be craving Belgian. I might well promote this to 5 after meeting their brunch, which I'm big on. read more

We went in on a Sunday, not too busy, but it took forever to be greeted and then we actually began looking around for a table (many were still dirty), ourselves. The space is very dark, in the middle of a sunny day. There is not much of an ambiance. The restaurant is decorated in a mix of Belgian memorabilia and random things like Smurfs. It seems to be a husband and wife running the restaurant by themselves. We sat down, and then it took another 5-10 minutes for menus and water and bread. We ordered, and both had the carbonnade a la Flemande (beef stew served on a plate, not a bowl with fries). The stew was not bad, but it was a lil pricy. The service was very slow and a lil rude, when asked questions. It was what I have come to know a French restaurant to be (poor service and overpriced). We had to find the owner for the check, which was brought to us (she only had two other tables at this point, but was talking to maybe a son, behind the bar). We put in a card, and again, had to get the owner's attention. We don't really plan to come back. read more

Came to cafe brussels for lunch as part of HRW. I had the mushrooms for my first course. So good. Even better when you place it on the sliced bread they give you while you wait for entrée. My second course was the steak cheval. Pretty tasty. The fries were cooked to perfection. For dessert I had the chocolate ice-cream. The fudge sauce was delectable. My fiancé got the crepe for dessert and a flight of beers. The crepe was really simple but tasty. My brother got the tomato crevette. This also good paired with the complimentary bread. And for dessert he got the flan. The caramel on the flan nice and gooey. It paired well with the flight of beers he ordered to go along with his meal. The service was great. Our drinks were filled and the waiter was nice and cordial. There are many places to go, that serve fancy small plates with more garnish and fluff on the side. This isn't it. This is a restaurant that serves great food - home made, just like visiting your family in Belgium. They are well known for their Mussels served many ways, and of course their Beers on tap.
