We just came back from yet another wonderful family dinner at Cafe Fusion. Our favorite dishes include: fried oyster with crispy basil, pan-friend milkfish with lemon (it's amazing how they can de-bone the whole fish with a special technique), oysters with tofu in black bean sauce, sweet potato leaves in garlic, dragon's whisker (cold dish, seasonal), pork with gobo root, and walnut shrimp. Our kids love eating here and eat a lot. They give you a plate of seaweed, jasmine tea and white rice as part of your meal. The waitresses can be a little abrupt, but I think that's just the culture. We speak Mandarin, so it's easier to communicate with them. read more

Since the food was good, I'll give it 4 stars. I tried fish and shrimp dishes. But they are really cheap on the rice, and overpriced for what you get. I really liked the little seaweed small appetizer they give. The service is so-so, needed to wait too long sometimes for requests. Come here for authentic Taiwanese food. My parents really like this place, and always take my relatives from Taiwan to eat here. My favorite is the cold squid! SO good and difficult to find anywhere else. I remember their seaweed and pretty much any vegetables are good here. I also enjoyed the Three Cup Chicken and the Clam Soup was good as well. Authentic Taiwanese food couldn't be any better. You know you're in for good eats when they bring you some complimentary garlic marinated seaweed strings to start. The best dish we had was a cold vegetable dish that I didn't expect to be chilled. On a hot summer day it was crispy and delicious. The steamed kidneys were fresh as can be and actually came with some thin noodles on the side. Bitter melon with beef was solid. As I'm sitting here at this table during CNY eve (Chinese New Years), service here is super slow. When it gets busy, they lag in service and they aren't that friendly. When we got here we were promised a table that was already cleaned. What happened was there is this old papa (grandpa) who sits at the table promised to us. He wasn't part of our party so my aunt asked the owner why is this old papa sitting at our table? Then the old papa party started to sit at the table. The owner apologizes saying that they didn't like the table that was assigned to them and wanted the table the was promised to us. Instead of doing the right thing and asking those people to stand up and wait for their table, the owner DOESN'T do anything but say sorry to us and that we will get the table that they didn't want. For me, that's very wrong in doing business. How can you do that to your customers? I understand it's busy and CNY, but you need to also provide good service. The lady waitress (who speaks Mandarin and other a bun) just ignored me when I asked her about the free drink for check in. And it's taking a while for food to come out meaning they are unstaffed. Very unprofessional and especially on a busy busy day. I won't be back here because of their horrible service. read more

This place is authentic Taiwanese. The chef, who is from Tianjin and probably never been to China, knows how to prepare tasty Taiwanese dishes. His cooking skill is evidenced by all the repeat Taiwanese customers every night. We like the bitter melon with eggs, as well as the clam dishes. Well, where should I begin..... I've been ordering food from this place for a while....the food is good, the people are nice, but, the service is really bad...even for "To-Go". Normally, when you order food to pick up, you don't really have too much interaction, which mean, you don't really get emotional or anything like that. However, this place, they can make you really, really PISSED, even for take-out!!! About two months ago, I called and ordered food to pick up, they told me 20min, of course, from my past experience, they never really ready in 20min, so I arrived about 40-50min after I called. Guess What, they didn't even start my order!!! It's was almost 9pm, most Chinese restaurant closed at 9pm, I have no choice but to wait another 30min......it was HORRIBLE!!!! read more

Every Chinese new year we treat our friends to a banquet style meal, usually it was in a Cantonese seafood place, but this year, we decided to try Taiwanese style banquet at Cafe Fusion and we had one of the best banquet in Los angeles....tops all that we had before in L.A.. We had the $360 banquet , total 11 fabulous courses plus bonus fruit plate. The style and flavor of the courses are truly authentic Taiwanese...the type that we had when we were little kids in Taiwan and then dream of when we grew up as it is really very rare to come across this type of feast outside Taiwan. It brings back happy childhhood memories.... The lobster is unbelievably big, the appetizer combo is amazing, full of rare, fresh ingredients, delicious huge braised pork knuckle, whole black cod, fried oyster with basil, Kidney in rice wine and vermicelli, three cup tofu ...we love that the cooking is not too greasy and emphasize on the flavor of the fresh ingredients. Last night our Chinese friends ordered, so I'm not sure what the dishes are called in English. We had the cold dressed dragon's beard (actually chayote shoots), deep fried oysters with basil, and the steamed cod, all of which were delicious! They were so good I won't complain about the free range chicken in oil with scallions, which my friends liked, but is an acquired taste. Yes, you might have to walk a few extra feet because of limited parking, and being a Chinese restaurant, it's noisy and the staff isn't as smiley as it it might be, and the servings are bit small, but it's worth it for the tasty food. The food we ordered were done badly. Scallion chicken is overcooked and appeared dehydrated; their rice was cooked with excess water and clung up like a starch ball; Scallion braised fish should be covered with reduced sauce but was soaked in excess waterly sauce instead. The owner is arrogant and rude to the customers. He probably thinks he is unstoppable but for sure he's losing me as a customer. I know he'll continue to run business the same way and I hope people will stop sucking up to the bad food and bad attitude. read more

This is my first post ever. I guess the experience was bad enough for me to write this post. We were there for Chinese banquet style dishes which typically consist of 10 to 12 cold and hot preselected dishes by the chef. Of all the dishes, only the braised pork belly (substituting the braised pork shank which they were out of) was up to par. All the other dishes, including the steam sea bass and the garlic lobster, were huge disappointments! The lobster tasted like frozen Pacific spiny lobster which, in my opinion, does not taste as good as Maine lobster and is best when served sashimi style when fresh. The presentation and taste were ordinary at best. The service was bad and the owner was rude. Big disappointment! read more

The owner simply does not care about his customers. We called ahead to ask how long the wait would be for our family, party of 5. They told us to come in about 30 mins, which we did. When we arrived, there was an empty table so we were waiting to be seated, and of course we were pretty hungry already. The owner told us that the table was reserved and did not want to talk to us further. We waited for another 40 mins, seeing other people going in front of us. And that table? Still empty. WHERE THERE IS SMOKE THERE MUST BE A FIRE!! We tried to ignore the other bad reviews...as I came here for the kidney in wine and noodle dish, along with the clam soup and three cup chicken. First off, the kidney in wine was horrible, it is intended to be a comfort food dish in Taiwan, so I used to eat it all the time, but I couldn't even finish 1/3 of dish without feeling drunk, as all I could taste was the wine flavor instead of the sesame oil flavor, so a HUGE disappointment. Don't bother to getting it here-cooking at home will be better than here. The clam soup was not bad so that is the reason for the one star, the three cup chicken was nothing special to brag about which was supposed to be one of their specialties. On top of that the service was horrible. We were waiting and stared the 3 waitress down for rice which took 10 min after the three cup chicken was served. Then after the whole unpleasant meal, we stared the 3 waitresses down for our check and to get a to go box but the 3 waitresses walked around us and chit chat until I finally had to get up and get the boxes ON MY OWN and head to the counter for the check. Needless to said we didn't get the watermelon after the meal. This was the worst Taiwanese meal in CA, just to think we been there was a horrible mistake, don't ever step in here. Excellent Taiwanese restaurant! The food is clean, not too salty, and had Grandma approved flavor! We tried the black cod which everyone agreed was the favorite. We also had the pork belly, honey walnut shrimp, fried oysters, and shrimp chow mein. I would definitely come again but try their banquet menu as a la carte could get pricey!
