I used to be a weekly guest but I had a really bad experience here during Covid times to the point that I was certain I would never go back because of the awful treatment I received from an angry staff member. Last week I finally decided to give it another shot but was left disappointed. our server was very nice but my drink was forgotten, the sweet potatoes were undercooked, and there was a wiry black hair in my salad. I had only had a few bites and it was removed from my bill but I found it strange that no attempt to replace my dish or apologize was made. I understand accidents happen but it's understandably pretty gross to end up with a strangers hair in your food/fork and I was surprised at the lack of customer service. My absolute favorite thing to order is the Chinese chicken salad with the hibiscus tea, they both even taste so natural and and hand made. Fairly odd, me visiting every vegan restaurant in town and somehow not reviewing Cafe Gratitude. Perhaps I just thought everyone already knew about it? Ah well, I suppose I'll toss my thoughts on the pile of hundreds if only to clarify what Cafe Gratitude sets out to do. A lot of people love it, a lot of people hate it. I'm thinking some folks just don't know what to expect, so let me spell it out here. What you need to realize is you're walking into a vegan restaurant that is designed completely around healthy concepts. You may be thinking, "But Justin, it's already vegan, aren't all vegan restaurants healthy?" Absolutely not. That's one of the most commonly asked questions I get: "Are there any fat, unhealthy vegans?" There are certainly a ton of unhealthy leaning vegan restaurants and I'd guess quite a few obese vegans too. I've been to all-vegan southern and soul food restaurants that are nothing but fried food, BBQ, and desserts. Keep in mind Fritos, Oreos, Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch, 7-Eleven brand Apple Pies and a million other dramatically unhealthy foods are all vegan. Get the picture? *The food* This is the most important to understand for someone new to Gratitude. They started as a raw vegan restaurant chain in the Bay Area and they still have a lot of raw recipe aspects to their menu today. Cashew cheeses, sprouted crackers and chips, raw soups. Raw is a whole different ballgame from generic vegan, it's based around whole plant foods and keeping them as close to their natural state as possible, retaining those natural nutrients that are often lost during high heat cooking or over processing. If you've never had raw crackers before I'll warn you now, they're going to taste notably different from that sleeve of Ritz crackers you destroyed last night. It's an adjustment, but know that you're eating something bursting with protein, fiber, and nothing but positive benefits for your body. The whole menu isn't raw, at least not any longer since their early Bay Area days. But all the meal options focus around that "whole plant foods" way of life, keeping ingredients close to their natural state so you get the full benefit. I'm not that big of a fan of raw so when I go to Gratitude, I go for the cooked dishes (which are now the majority of the menu) every time. *Organic* If you want confidence in organic produce being used in your food, then look no further than their website: "Our menu is vegan and always organic, all the time. While many other restaurants say, organic when available, we say, if it isn't available then we don't offer it." Pretty straight forward, I like it. *Local* Again, their website says it best: "We have our own garden, Be Love Farm, which grows food for our restaurants so we can offer the freshest produce available." Local produce, check. *Final thoughts* I'm definitely a fan of Cafe Gratitude. I used to go regularly when I lived in San Francisco, I frequented their Berkeley location when I lived in Oakland, and now that I'm an Angeleno I'm often at this Venice location. The bowls, the wraps, the salads, I've tried most and I enjoy my food 90% of the time. The desserts are *PHENOMENAL* so you just keep that in mind. Vegan sweets never tasted that good. And for beverages they have in house juices, spritzers, elixers, wine and beer. I've left off just one star here for the 10% of the time I haven't been that jazzed about my food and also a handful of times the service here has been solidly below average. Some day I hope to push this up to five. So there you have it. I went from not writing a review at all for years to writing a ridiculously long one. Long, yes, but I wanted to really spell out what's happening here. This isn't just another restaurant with regular food that you know is vegan, it's important to know what you're getting into and what you're really going to see when coming here. It's a tremendously healthy vegan option in Los Angeles, I love it, and by all means if you're even a little curious as to what a whole plant based diet restaurant looks like, you should get in to Cafe Gratitude ASAP. read more

I am so GRATEFUL to find this amazing vegan restaurant. The food is so delicious and Angel, my server, did such a great job. I had the buffalo cauliflower starter which was scrumptious. Great caramelization and depth of flavor, with creamy dipping sauce. I paired it with the ceasars salad and topped that with blackened seitan. The restaurant has a great vibe - inside or outdoor seating. Wonderful people work there - can't say enough. Admittedly, vegan food at Cafe Gratitude wasn't on my "to do" list but when my sister came into town and suggested that we have lunch there, I agreed to try it and I brought a couple of friends along for the ride. To my surprise, everything that we ordered was excellent. I ordered the PURE - marinated kale salad with sesame-wasabi and garlic-tahini dressing, avocado, sea palm, nori, cucumbers, carrots, cilantro, basil and green onions topped with teriyaki almonds. It was fresh, flavorful and lightly dressed. I also tasted the sushi bowl, which was the special of the day, as well as the AWESOME sandwich with perfectly crusted eggplant parmesan. While some would argue that $13 for a salad or for raw food is a bit expensive, looking at the crowd in the restaurant, it was obvious that lots of people love this place. I am grateful for Cafe Gratitude! Despite having heard numerous words of praise about Cafe Gratitude, I never had the opportunity to visit until this past weekend when my friend and I decided that we needed something healthy after a string of questionable culinary choices. And, I am happy to report that Cafe Gratitude mostly lived up to the hype! Although there are various locations scattered around Los Angeles, I chose to dine at the Venice location given its convenient location several miles from my apartment and its proximity to the beach. The restaurant has an aesthetic best described as hipster beach bungalow. Everything inside seemed tidy and clean inside, even if the dishes had bits of food crusted to them. Because it's VERY LOUD inside, I would recommend sitting on the patio if you want to actually be able to hear your dining companions. Apparently, there is a parking garage for patrons, but I was able to find street parking on one of the adjacent streets. One of the more interesting (read: New Age-y) thing about Cafe Gratitude is the menu. All of the items are named after different adjectives that are supposed to represent your state of mind. If you're so inclined, you may order your food by saying, "I am [insert adjective here]." And, you're given a guided conversation topic as you wait. This could either be cool or cultish. I elected to order food in a more traditional manner and went for the Vivacious (Kale Chips) and the Humble (Indian Curry Bowl). VIVACIOUS ($8) These were mostly crispy, but I felt that some of the pieces probably could have been baked a little longer. The pieces that weren't crispy were a bit chewy. The garlic tahini had a strong flavor, but when used sparingly, complemented the kale chips. Okay, but maybe not worth the cost. HUMBLE ($15) This dish was loaded with more flavor than I expected! All the different elements came together nicely, and I savored everything to the last bite. The curried red lentil dal had the perfect amount of spice. The spinach seemed to be grilled and the flavor reflected that. The roasted garnet yams added heft to the otherwise light dish. The coconut mint chutney added just a hint of mint. And, the spicy tomato jam had the perfect amount of sweetness to pull everything together. Highly recommended! My friend and I both agreed that the food served at Cafe Gratitude was probably some of the best vegan food we've had in LA, but acknowledged that that quality came at a steep price. Considering that most entrees and salads are $12-15, I wouldn't call Cafe Gratitude affordable even if the ingredients are top notch. I would also note that Cafe Gratitude tends to use lots of nut-based vegan cheeses in their items, so this may not be the most friendly to those with nut allergies. There are only a handful of items that don't use nuts, but even then, contamination may be hard to avoid. The menu "strongly recommends" that anyone with allergies to nuts or seeds avoid the restaurant. Overall, I'm glad to have had the opportunity to dine at Cafe Gratitude, and would highly recommend this restaurant to vegetarians, vegans, and the health-minded. This restaurant is probably better saved for special occasions if money is a concern, as a full meal will set you back more than what you'd pay at other restaurants, both vegan and non-vegan. read more

Cafe Gratitude is a rare and wonderfully peaceful dining experience. I don't often associate the word peace with restaurants, but Cafe Gratitude has managed to achieve it. The moment you walk in, there is a calming presence among the employees and people that dine here. Their motto is "made with love" and it has been achieved. Their is love present in the way the employees treat each other, the staff speak to one another, the guests smile at each other, and through the preparation of the food. Cafe Gratitude is an all plant based restaurant. It's a vegan's paradise, but don't turn away from this delightful spot just because you eat meat. There is truly something for everyone here! The entrees, bowls, and starters are the way to go when dinning here. The sandwiches are nice, but not as flavorful as the other menu items. Some of my favorites are the (Humble) Indian Curry Bowl, and the Buffalo Cauliflower. My last dinning experience here, I had the (Elated) mole enchiladas. They are filled with jackfruit and topped with a creamy cashew queso fresco. They also come with rice, black beans, and avocado. If you are craving Mexican food, this is the perfect all plant based substitute. They have a superb organic wine selection too! If you've never had organic wine, you must have a glass here. It's the best change I ever made to my life. No grogginess follows you the next day after a glass of organic grapes. Their organic Pinot Noir from Planet Oregon is a winner! Not a drinker, then go for one of their uplifting juices or smoothies. Another unique aspect about Cafe Gratitude that contributes to its serenity-type setting is there verbiage used here. Each menu item is named after a positive affirmation. When you order, you have to say the affirmation out loud. It seems cheesy, but it actually creates a beautiful, positive dialogue and brings nourishing messages to your mind. Cafe Gratitude is perfect for tourists wanting an ultimate LA experience, friends looking for a good happy hour, and date night. The restaurant has cream-colored walls, nice mood lightening, and cozy benches to curl up against when you want to enjoy a meal and feel relaxed at the same time. I am obsessed with the Exquisite Calamari as well as the Thriving Soup of the Day. The Dazzling Caesar, The Fuerte Quesadilla, The Enthusiastic Mushroom Sandwich, and the Original Burrito I also highly recommend. Came here on a Sunday afternoon around 3pm! Almost every table was filled but we got sat right away. The server was really nice and friendly! We got the hummus plate as a starter and the 3 options were really tasty. The hummus was the best one of the 3 though! I got the blackened tempeh Caesar wrap which was very flavorful. Every bite was packed with so many different tastes coming from so many amazing ingredients. Came with a little side salad too. The chicken fried mushroom sandwich was just as memorable. I would sit here all day and just eat breakfast, lunch, then tea/coffee, then dinner (if I had no where else to be). I love the "I AM" menu. Dishes are named things like "vibrant", "charismatic" etc, and you have the option of ordering food as "I AM VIBRANT". If you are not into that kinda thing, order as usual. Haha. They have a nice selection of breakfast/brunch items, and lunch/dinner entrees. Everything is vegan** and GF items are clearly marked. There are also some Raw dishes. The times I been here were all brunch/ snacks so I've only had their "sweet" items. I really like their GF buckwheat pancakes. **They do have HONEY in some items. They say they know their beekeepers personally and it is sourced responsibly. So if you are definitely strict on NO HONEY, then definitely let your waiter know. Cafe Gratitude also offers a selection of beverages- fresh juices, smoothies and coffee/tea! MUST try their Matcha Latte (contains honey and can be subbed with agave). The Chai latte was so-so. But it was homemade chai I believe and definitely not sweet/ artificial, unlike other chai lattes I've had. The vibe of this Venice location is absolutely charming. Their playlist is EXACTLY what I have on my Spotify-- I felt totally in my zone. They play mostly indie/folk/ chill vibe music. The waiters are all really friendly. The menu is harder than most to figure out. One can or should order via their phone. The pizza was delish, according to her. Prices, high. Kale salad plus extra vegetables and a coffee=$26. That is food and tax, it is counter service so no need to tip, unless helper gives great service.
