Café guatemalteco is in great area along mission st. Service was great and cordial with Spanish speaking customers. Was excited to try Guatemalan cuisine for the first time. The plátanos were fried perfectly and I wish I would've gotten them "con todo". The side order tamal de puerco came with enjoyable pieces of bread but the tamal itself was a little bland, and lacking any traditional salsa that I was expecting. The strawberry-banana licuado was enjoyable, but not very cold when served. Would come back again, but I would personally not order the tamales. read more

As soon as you walk in, you're going to be overstimulated by the menu. Lots and lots and lots of choices, BUT they have photos of the food, so if you're like me and panicked at the sight of a huge menu, just choose the photo that looks the yummiest They do have a display case with fresh juices, and not just orange juice. Detox juices and nutrient juices packed with players like Beets, carrots and apple. So delicious. The green hot sauce they have on the table is a winner. I am a hot sauce connoisseurs and I've never tried this one. Delicious. When our plates came, they're served with tortillas. These are unlike any tortilla I have ever had. While the food is good the girls working there do not really know what is on the menu. They gave us menus that were in Spanish and we had to find the English version but even on the English menu the description of two separate items were identical except one was pork and one is carne asada. When we asked the girl the difference she said the carne asada one was pork and the pork is he was carne asada which I knew was wrong information because I have had the carne asada plate before. There was a guy there who kept harassing us and asking for money. Honestly most restaurants would make the person leave but not this place. The guy kept asking over and over for more than 30 minutes. They really should ask him to leave and not let him bug the customers. We have children and this did not feel very safe. When I can I have given food or money to homeless people but this guy was not very friendly and he also did not look homeless but he should not keep asking over and over. Food was good! Had a weird experience with my payment though. After I paid and tipped $12 in cash on a $45 dollar meal, I checked my bank account and they instead charged me $65 on my debt card. When I called to complain, took them 3 days to get back to me after calling multiple times. I had a cream cheese sesame bagel with bacon and I really liked how crispy the bacon was. Also got the horchata latte and it was good but not necessarily special compared to other cafes. There were lots of options on the menu and a self serving kiosk. They also sell snacks from Guatemala that you can't get just anywhere. I ordered a single chuchito and the Guatemalan breakfast (2 over medium eggs, 2 strips of bacon, black refried beans, sour cream, marinated thin steak, 2 small pieces of cheese, and 4 plátanos) which came with 2 handmade tortillas. The chuchito was not exactly what I expected. Never have I had a chuchito where the sauce was located on the outside instead of inside, temp was barely warm, meat was possibles pork (there was some ground meat during one part and whole pieces midway as well). The meat from the Guatemalan breakfast was very tasty and the plate was extremely filling ( took some home cause I couldn't finish it). This has become our go to for catering and random weekdays when you need a touch of home cooking without your home doing the actual cooking. Their Family Asada Combo can happily serve 4 people. Yum! My workplace delivered food from Cafe Guatemalteco to my house as a get well token after surgery. I had never tasted Guatemalan cuisine so I wasn't sure what to expect. Everything was yummy and delivered hot! What we got: Super Churrasco 7.5/10-shrimp was perfectly cooked, steak had good flavor, beans were delicious. Tamal de Pollo-8/10-great flavor and perfect masa to protein ratio. I loved that there were no surprises inside of the tamal, it was simple and delicious. Caldo de Res-10/10-my favorite dish. You could tell the caldo was slow-cooked, it tasted like home. I also love that they use yuca instead of potato which is nice for a change. So much flavor! Comes with a side of rice and handmade tortillas. The rice was also yummy. Being that the food travels well, I'll definitely be ordering from here in the future. This, in my opinion, has the best breakfast burritos we have found in the Bay Area to date. We've had their chorizo wrap and their breakfast wrap with avocado and meat. They're not huge burritos but they're very flavorful and their salsas are great. The green tomatillo salsa has a very good flavor and I'd say is medium spicy and the red salsa is definitely spicy and makes us love this place. Additionally, we have also had several of their other food options. The caldo de res is super good and flavorful, and is our go-to when it's cold out or if one of us is sick. We've also had the Super Churrasco Chapin, Desayuno Guatemalteco, Platanos con todo, and tortilla con carne asada and all were delicious! Most of these also come with handmade corn tortillas! In addition to the food mentioned above, we have had several of their drinks, including several smoothies and coffees, such as their horchata latte and toasted marshmallow latte, all of which have been absolutely delicious! Overall, we have not been disappointed by anything we have tried here! Our family always asks us to order from here when they come over. Black refried beans were tasty with some queso fresco or cotija sprinkled on top. Comes also with 2 homemade white corn tortillas, which were soft and still warm even after being outside for 30min after being delivered. The only minor negative is that the peas in the rice were shriveled. Overall fantastic, definitely get this! We will definitely return.
