Popped by Cafe Seventy8 for a quick bite before my evening shift. I don't really understand the appeal. I ordered the Frenchie panini and an iced coffee. They didn't have cream in their pourer and was told they were "out for the day" when I asked for some. What kind of coffee shop doesn't restock creamers or milk? The panini took 35 minutes before it I received it, and mind you the cafe was almost dead when I arrived. The food was okay, nothing memorable. The service wasn't too great either. Cashier rolled his eyes at me when I asked about the sandwiches because I guess he had to make it himself. No one had any real enthusiasm for working here or even the skill to put on a fake smile for customers. Gave it a shot, not impressed. read more

I'm a big fan of this cafe. The first time (and definitely not the last) I came here, I had a cappuccino and a breakfast panini. My girlfriend had a fruit and yogurt partait and coffee. My cappuccino had a perfectly thick head of foam on top -- made just the way a cappuccino should (unless you texture the milk instead, which is also a good option) -- and was delicious. As we sat down to enjoy our coffee, I could smell the breakfast panini coming. It was savory, gooey and just the thing I needed to get me going that morning. I'll definitely come here again to do some work. I love how the price is slightly cheaper than most cafes in the city. I tried their Breakfast Panini + added ham = about $7. The portion was HUGE. I ate the sandwich for both lunch and dinner. They have a wide selection of bagels, pastries, and other beverages. There are several plugs located next to the tables which are nice when you're looking for a place to work. Wifi is strong too! I live close by and have been coming here for easy weekend breakfasts for awhile now. I love their bagel and breakfast sandwiches, and coffee is decent. Would do 3.5 if I could, because it is a little pricey for what it is, and because the service could definitely be friendlier. It can be hit or miss, I've seen the same cashier be upbeat and helpful, to looking like she's hungover and just rolled out of bed (and forgetting my orders) the next weekend. I'm a huge fan of Katie's Vegan Eggs (a cold sandwich). Honestly better than real eggs sandwiches I've previously had. The soy lattes are also pretty good (I paid $13 pre-tip for both the sandwich and coffee). Another bonus is that I've always had space to sit and tables / power outlets for working on your laptop. (Even on Sunday afternoons during peak brunch hours). I would love to see some other vegan options on the menu! read more

wow, what a great surprise how delicious and friendly our experience was. also, it was spacious (made us feel that covid risk was lower) with tables placed far apart from each other and often next to open windows. lots of outdoor seating in the parklet. hot chocolate: delicious--probably made from scratch, not from a powder from the taste of it. bagel sandwiches: somehow yummier that what i make at home panaroma english muffin sandwich: beautiful surprise to find this here and have it taste so good. i didn't even add meat, and it was completely satisfying. service: the two guys working the cafe sunday morning were friendly, quiet, and very competent. crowd: diverse neighbors--nice sunday crowd. price: very very reasonable, especially for san francisco. for under $10, i left feeling very happy and satisfied. my wallet thanks you! definitely will be back again because it's top notch delicious at a great value price. read more

I can see why Cafe Seventy8 has such great reviews. You get a really strong cup of coffee here for cheaper than Starbucks or Peet's, so we're talking both quality and quantity. Not only that, their bagels, sandwiches, and salads are all made to order by just two people working the counter and food prep station. It would be a travesty if this local stable goes under or has to close because of gentrification and rising rent in San Francisco. Great service, strong coffee, free wi-fi, delicious food. This review comes after my fourth time at the cafe. I really tried to give it a few chances before such a bad review, but today was the last straw. The food is decently tasty and is fairly priced, 4/5 for that, but the service is atrocious. The people at the cash register have the worst attitude and are incredibly rude. Today the guy messed up my order and practically threw the sandwich at me and when I tried to get his attention (literally 5 feet away) he was talking to the guy making sandwiches. The woman working the register the other day acted like I was an absolute idiot for not knowing they'd be out of everything bagels around 10am. Stopped in because it was 65 degrees outside in San Francisco, and for those of you not local, we call that, "freezing." I wanted a warm beverage after having dinner at one of my favorite SF restaurants that apparently boycotts turning the heat on in winter and is somehow colder inside than it is outside. (C'MON, pizzahacker! I bought premium toppings. You can afford to put a few logs in the fire.) So anyway, I stop in and was really just glad to see this coffee shop open at 6:30pm on a Sunday and holiday weekend. I'd been leaning towards a chai but for some reason I blurted out, 'Mexican Hot Chocolate', when the barista asked what I'd like. I did kind of want it and the idea of a spicy dessert-y beverage sounded nice but I had a smidge of FOMO about not getting the chai... then someone pointed out the $5 credit card minimum so I ended up ordering the chai, too, for the my walking mate. It wasn't busy at all so they had just one person taking orders, making them, and ringing up. The general vibe is a little low budget and the baked treats on the counter were pretty stale (I got an overly hard dream bar). I was excited just to have two hot beverages in my hands to warm up a bit on the way back to my vehicle but bummed that my Mexican hot chocolate was really just a regular old hot chocolate. This place is the best! Low-key neighborhood spot that packs a punch - a friendly, delicious punch! - right to the tummy. Their hot sandwiches are incredible - like off the charts good - and they appear to do it all from the tiny kitchen behind the counter. I say "appear" because while I've never watched the process too closely (they are usually pretty busy and I usually have my head in my phone) the results far far far exceed the sum of their parts. So much so that I'm slightly suspicious of what goes on back there. My personal favorites include the Heavenly Veggie and the Spicy Soppressata. In fact, I think those are the first two sandwiches I've tried there, so the whole menu could be incredible but I've just never felt the need to go with anything but those two. It's a pretty bold proclamation to name you're sandwich "Heavenly", but hot damn if it doesn't hit the mark. My partner just described it as the best vegetarian sandwich she ever had. I agree. Melted Brie, avocado, olive tapenade, little bits of onion, on toasted ciabatta bread. Other highlights include the sidewalk seating, the adjacent parklet, the huge sliding windows that bring a cool breeze on a hot day, the awesome mural across the street and people watching at the intersection of 29th and Tiffany. "Just pay us back later when you're in the neighborhood." That's a 5 star experience for a neighborhood cafe! I'll definitely be a returning customer. The coffee here is amiss sometimes. I've had cappuccino here a few times, and it really depends on the barista you get. I've gotten rough foam and bitter cappuccinos to really smooth and delicious cappuccinos. The house coffee is a good deal and their iced coffee tastes good too. I don't know of any other coffee shop that does paninis like Seventy8. I had some American friends who live in Germany visiting--we had to eat there at least once per day, sometimes twice. Stay away from the Clucker and the Vege Delight, they don't have enough for you- go away! Liked the staff, it's sunny location and the others who were hanging here, but... the drip coffee was horrible. Too light-bodied and tasted old. Perhaps I caught a bad (or expired) batch, but it had me craving Folger's.
