    House special squid
    Mabel T.

Hmm I think this place is okay. I think this is the second new location of Kim Tar but bigger. We ordered the basil clams, prawns, snowpea shoot leaves, house special squid and the peking style pork chops. I thought the prawns were pretty good but not all were as big as expected. They don't always have them and they are not on the menu. We did like the pork chops and the snowpea leaves but I would say comparable to most cafes. The house special squid maybe had fish sauce flavor with salt and pepper which made it saltier but interesting. I think I prefer the typical salt pepper way. As for the basil clams...they looked good and good quality but when I tried it and I was confused why it was so sweet and sour. Then my friends also commented there is no way these are supposed to be sour. So we told our waitress who confirmed it wasn't supposed to be sour, took the dish and brought it back to the kitchen. Later she told us they remade it but when we got it back and it looked pretty much what was sent back but neatly replated. We tried it again.... although the sauce was more mild ....it still had the sour taste... although I felt fine right after. That night my stomach started to churn. As we were paying, we were all surprised to also learn that they charge $7 for a pot of rice. I guess I didn't see it on the menu. I'd say overall the service was friendly but wished they did something more with the clam dish. I don't think I'd come back especially since there are other restaurants with better price points and quality.

Lunch portion - string beans and shrimp in garlic sauce - large portion and very good

Well, Kim Tar has opened a swanky new branch of their popular restaurant in Temple City, so I went for lunch to try a few specials. Parking in Temple City is always easy both out front on the street or in the parking lot located in back. The restaurant is large and can handle large groups. The place was pretty empty on a weekday for late lunch, but the two servers were incredibly friendly and knowledgable. For those of us that don't speak Chinese, it is always a pleasure to have servers who speak English perfectly. You can actually ask questions. I tried the Kung Pao chicken and the strings beans with shrimp in garlic sauce. I wish they offered their House Special shrimp for a lunch special, as everyone appears to order it for dinner. It's I assume like Boston Lobster's house style flavoring but on shrimp, and that sounds delicious. They do offer the House Special chicken and I will try that for lunch next time. The kung pao tasted pretty good. Not the best I've had, but good. My only complaint is I was told it was a mix of white and dark meat chicken, but it seemed to be mostly dark meat. Also wish authentic Chinese restaurants cleaned their chickens better. I know many Asians eat cartilage, but hitting gristle bits when digging into chicken always puts me off. The string beans with shrimp was more succesful. First of all, the portion for a lunch special was large and there were surprisingly a large amount of good sized shrimp. I really enjoyed this dish, and the garlic sauce was incredibly tasty. Dinner is much more costly than lunch, so I recommend trying it for lunch first, but I will go back and probably for both dinner and lunch. Pleasantly surprised. I recommend it, though it probably won't be your favorite local spot. I still think it's a good new addition to the area. Try it!

Our family visited on a weekend afternoon and tried the lunch special menu. Prices are around $14 per dish but beware that the portion size is very small. The four of us ordered 6 dishes and we finished them all. The flavor is nice and the wok hay is there. Service was great. Our server was super attentive and nice. We stopped by at around 12:30 and was seated right away. People who came after had a short wait. Interior is clean and bright. Restroom is also clean which is a plus. Parking: theres a lot behind the restaurants but its shared with other businesses so parking can be a challenge during busy hours.

What we come for. House special lobster with garlic noodles. Kinda small look for 5 lbs.

While the original location remains a classic, this reimagined space offers a beautifully modernized dining experience. The Ambiance: A contemporary, refined design that elegantly elevates the traditional atmosphere. The Cuisine: The signature lobster remains spectacular, complemented by exceptionally impressive, oversized clams.Weekend Lunch: A curated selection of weekend lunch features priced at $13, offering perfectly portioned dishes ideal for tasting a variety of flavors. The Service: Impeccable hospitality, with a special commendation to Brandon Lee for his outstanding and attentive care. I think wife screw up on tips. We take care next time buds. Andy, great job buddy, we will see you next time. Either location is a hit.

This place replaced Seafood Capital and now that it is open, my family decided to try it out. We parked in the back and were able to get a seating in the middle round table. I noticed that the staff do not speak mandarin, so my family ordered in English (as best they could), and we had a lot of back and forth translations going on. Nonetheless, we had a great time and the staff were very nice and patient. The dishes we had were salt pepper pork chops, sweet and sour pork chops, fired whole fish, fried scallops, seafood hot pot, fried squid, and others. My favorite is the fried scallops, the fried garlic and the flavor was amazing. Would definitely want this dish again! The other dishes were very good! However a few were not as great. The one I think I'd skip would be fired whole fish, the sauce was too thick, it was a little spicy, and when we got nonspicy sauce it was gooey and no one wanted it on the fish. We sort of ate it and dipped it in other sauces. Also the fired squid had a very thick batter and very little flavor... They had fish tanks full of live sea creatures ready to be cooked on order. They had huge screen TVs all over the walls. I think it was a really great dinner, I would definitely come back for those fried scallops.

I saw a food review on Kim Tar Seafood on Facebook and got really hyped up and excited about wanting to try this new location. Honestly, the last time I went to Kim Tar was at the original place in Monterey Park where I think I just had noodles. I had no idea they offered seafood. However, this was probably about 40 years ago so I am sure there's been many changes to their menu. It was easy to find parking behind the restaurant, where you can enter through the rear entrance. The restaurant is small compared to other seafood restaurants, but I love how they lined the walls with large TVs . The restaurant was clean, and I disagree with some of the reviews about the lack of service, as my waitress was very attentive. She changed my plates 3 times and checked on my table at least 5 times. They offer family style meals that seem to be a very good deal for under $300. You can also bring your own wine, which is a HUGE plus! Everything I've mentioned so far had been positive, but let's get to the parts where I feel they've missed the marks. * Beer - We ordered Tsingtao and moments later, was told they just got the delivery and beer was room temperature. Warm beer? No thanks - so we asked what other beers they had. She listed other kinds of beers but also mentioned they were all warm but offered an ice bucket, * Menu pricing - I felt like I was looking at the prices at the gas station because there was a column for CASH and one for Credit Card. I have heard of discounts being offered if you pay with Cash at restaurants but it was the first time I see different prices listed for each individual item based on the payment method. * Basil with Clams - Big portions but not loving how it tastes. It was the first time I had Basils with Clams and it tasted SOUR, as if they soaked it with vinegar. I couldn't taste the basil at all. Newport Seafood is still by far, the best place to have basil clams. A huge disappointment with this dish. * Lobster w/ Noodles (with butter sauce) - This was one okay. I tasted more black pepper than actual butter sauce but I liked it. We asked for a lobster that was 2-3 pounds and it came out to 3 pounds @ $35/pound. There was a long wait for it to come out though. We had finished our other items before we got our lobster. Not cool. * Hong Kong Lemon Iced Tea - Save your $4. It was not good. The bill came out to just under $250 for two, which was lower than what I had expected. My overall experience at Kim Tar was a 6/10, mainly because our waitress was very nice and friendly.

I'm honestly baffled by the high rated reviews for Kim Tar. I completely understand that it's a Chinese Vietnamese restaurant but it missed the mark for my family and me. My parents and I are looking for a good restaurant to host my dad's 65th birthday. After seeing this restaurant pop up on our IG feed, we decided to give it a try for lunch on Friday afternoon. The restaurant was much smaller in person and it felt like a bar since it had wall to wall shows on while we dined. The servers were nice and attentive. We requested all our dishes to be made with less salt and not spicy due to my dad's dietary restrictions. We decided to try the following- 1. Veggie delight- it was good and had nice flavor 2. Mongolian beef- this was probably our favorite dish. Had a good wok flavor but some parts of the beef were chewy. 3. Salted shrimp- shrimps were big but the heads were hallow which was weird to us 4. House fish- very salty, strong buttery after taste. We didn't finish this dish and it wasn't worth taking home the leftovers. 5. Basil with clams- our least favorite, the clams were very sour. Another dish we didn't finish and didn't pack to go. 6. Seafood chow mein- the noodles weren't fried properly, it was still really chewy. The gravy was different and the flavor was lacking. I've been to other Chinese Vietnamese restaurants in the OC that are way better. Oh and when we inquired about their private rooms, it requires a $500 minimum order (they also charge $10 for any wine you bring). I'm glad we tried this place during lunch since I would absolutely not pay full price for this restaurant. I was really hoping to like this place, but once is enough.

Canto Viet Chinese food. Attentive staff. The food came out fast. Wall covered in LED screens. Kim tar TC really hits the points, Staff is really good about accommodating for us. We had issue with the shrimp devein, ( I don't care) Someone at the table does they let us know and we swapped the dish. Another can't eat the sauce the fish comes with because it's too spicy. They immediately brought out a new sweet sauce with out chilli.

Newly opened and still got work to do. Came with the family and we were seated shortly. No one gave us water during the entire time. I asked our server and don't think I was heard. Didn't come to check on us until we were almost done. They need to hire more staff during busy times, there were only a handful serving the entire place. I was excited about the food but it wasn't anything worth raving about. Food looked visually pleasing but they need to work on the taste. The house sauce tasted very salty. I've had similar dishes at other places in the area and this tasted like someone was too generous with the salt. The walnut shrimp was over fried, would skip this. The chicken fried rice was surprisingly good, something I wasn't expecting since this place is supposed to be good with seafood.

They recently opened so the family wanted to try the place out. We went at 11:30 and got seated right away. They got busy right after, with people queuing for a table. Service was quick overall and staff refilled the teapot fast. Not sure what type of tea they served but it was refreshing and not too strong. Since there were 5 of us, we ordered 5 dishes: -Chicken (half) ($22): ginger sauce was good on the side and chicken was decent but they drenched it in oil (3/5) -Beef chow fun ($16): missing the wok hei and tasted smoky. Beef was bland (3/5) -Sauteed string beans ($18): savory garlic sauce and crunchy beans (4/5) -House special shrimp ($25): fat fried shrimp with yummy kick of the spice but small portion (4/5) -Ong choy bean curd ($20): fresh veggies with minced garlic (4/5) Overall, the dishes leaned very oily. Portions were on the smaller side for the price. Also, they charged us for the pea sprouts ($20) even though they told us it ran out and we switched to the ong choy. We noticed after we left but went back and got it refunded.

From the moment we walked in, you could feel the heart behind this place. It's not just another restaurant--it's a true family-owned gem where every detail feels intentional and welcoming. The customer service was beyond exceptional; everyone treated us like we were part of their family, checking in at just the right moments and making sure we were good the entire time! The food... absolutely incredible!! Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with love. You can tell they take pride in what they serve--nothing felt rushed or generic. Each bite was better than the last, and it's rare to find a place where everything on the table is a hit! It's so special to see a new local spot start off this strong. If you're looking for amazing food, genuine hospitality, and a place you'll want to keep coming back to, this is it. Highly recommend. We've already been back twice since the grand opening on Thursday. We'll definitely be regulars! Great addition to Temple City! So happy they're here! This place is a gem -- kudos to Kelvin & Andy!!

Was very excited they opened another location closer to me. The other one I know is in Monterey Park but now I live in El Monte and this one is much closer. Food quality is amazing and everything tastes super fresh. Staff is really friendly and nice. I noticed the song playing on the speaker was on repeat and the staff and I had a good laugh about it and she was nice enough to change it. Also big plus for me, the restaurant is super clean and the restrooms too. Also sorry for some of the food photos being half gone already. Got too hungry and forgot to take a photo beforehand. Also one thing to add before I leave, Rithy the server was absolutely amazing and helped us pack our food and was extremely tentative throughout the meal. If you come here and eat and catch him working, it will truly by a blessing for your party!

I heard this newly opened restaurant has several locations and I was surprised to see one open so close my area. so I decide to give it a try. We ordered the lobster and crab that day and since the seafood was fresh, both dishes turned out really good. The flavors were nice, and the restaurant was clean and comfortable. Even though it's newly opened, it's was already pretty busy. The service was also very good too. The only thing I suggestion would be that the portion size could be a little bigger. For the price, especially for an asian restaurant, the portions felt a bit too small. The food tastes good but since the prices are not exactly cheap, larger portions would make the experience feel more worth it.

It was popping on a Friday evening and I can see why. The service and food are both excellent (although it also does come with a heftier price tag) We wanted to get the peking duck, but unfortunately it requires a week of advanced reservation. We ended up getting: Prime angus ribs - Excellent, super tender and flavorful meat that goes well with the (black pepper?) sauce Shredded pork with sweat bean sauce - comes served with chinese pancake (the thin stretchy crepe kind, not tortilla or bun). You eat it similar to how you'd eat a peking duck wrap, with some cucumber and spring onions but replace the duck with the shredded pork hah. Good flavor, enjoyed this dish quite a bit Stir fried pea sprouts - The dish comes stir fried with mushroom but we opted for a garlic stir fry (without mushroom) instead and it was excellent. Very garlicky and tasty. Secret Tofu - this was the most disappointing dish. It came recommended, but the tofu was more like an egg tofu and it wasnt crispy enough. Will pass. Will return again to try their peking duck next time!

They even remembered that we were there for the birthday celebration, which was a nice touch. The food came out much quicker than during my last visit, and the quality remains high. We ordered a total of six dishes to share among three people and left feeling reasonably full. Here's what we had: Crispy Shrimp - A must-order. It's incredibly crispy without being overly seasoned, which lets the texture shine. (5/5) Smoked Pork Rib - So good. I've never had anything quite like it. The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender and absolutely delicious. (5/5) Shrimp Fried Rice with Bonito - An elevated take on Chinese fried rice. It's a bit pricey, but definitely a step above your standard fried rice. (4.5/5) Stir-Fried Pea Sprouts with Mushroom - A simple, classic vegetable dish that is a must-order. The flavors weren't overpowering, which I really appreciated. (4.5/5) Chinese Beef Pie - Probably the most basic item we ordered, but still very tasty. It reminded me of a pan-fried bao with a flavorful beef filling. (4/5) Old Beijing Minced Eggplant Noodles - They were kind enough to provide this dish complimentary for the birthday celebration. The flavors were simple, but it was still very enjoyable. (4.5/5) Overall, it was a great experience. It's definitely more of a special-occasion restaurant, as our bill came out to about $120 for three people. However, the service is excellent, the atmosphere is comfortable and inviting, and the food quality is consistently high. Everything we ordered was enjoyable, and I'd gladly return.

Food was served in a decent amount of time, around 15 minutes. And all dishes arrived close together so we didn't have to wait long. The kung pao chicken is so good! Not spicy at all and very nice and crispy with good seasoning. It tasted delicious with some rice. The beef noodles were also delicious! It had good wok taste and was very flavorful. The tofu and shrimp were also good. None of the dishes were too salty and all were seasoned well and in pretty big portions, though I don't remember the exact price since they took the receipt away when we paid. But the meal was very worth and we had leftovers for lunch the next day. Such a yummy meal! I really enjoyed it! I am definitely coming back again!

A family…read moremember recommended this place and the price definitely got me interested ... and wow I was so blown away like the quality is definitely up there with famous Chinese restaurants in the SGV. Also, rice is free!! And cooked soooo well like not mushy at all. I know some places charge extra for rice but not here. You also get complimentary edamame and miso soup. Hunan Style Fried Pork-- it looks intimidating but the chilis are the fragrant kind!! Super mild baby spice, not like eating serranos. Super good flavor, wok hei is there, definitely getting again Stir Fried Pork Belly-- Similar to Hunan style but instead of chilis it's ... onion. There's so much onion. We just picked out the meat. Order the Hunan one with chili instead of this. Steam Greenland Halibut-- ORDER MULTIPLE!! One is not enough to share with the table!! It's so good you pretty much just want your own. It's like banquet style whole steam fish softness and texture and flavor.... Without the enormous price tag. Braised Pork in Brown Sauce-- Melty fatty tender goodness. The sauce is super rich and savory. Pretty much everything here is made to eat with rice so if it's too salty for you.. eat more rice. Stir fry dry bean curd with pork-- Look I know it's not the most appetizing looking or all that in terms of color palette.. BUT IT IS GOOOOD! Not all restaurants can make a good tofu dish but wow this is amazing. The flavor profile reminds me of that bean curd appetizer at din tai fung with the seaweed strips and bean sprouts. It's savory, slightly vinegary, meat is really tender and the tofu texture just goes sooo well with everything. Fried squid in three flavor sauce-- WARNING!! There's the clear squid bone (?) attached so make sure you pull it out !!! Flavor wise it's my first time having a sanbei dish that wasn't chicken. It's good though! Super tender, just make sure to pull out that clear strip and you're all set. Kung Pao Chicken-- Basic dish but NOOOT basic flavors!! Best kung pao chicken I've had in my life my god. We ordered it for the kid lolol but we probably ate more than he did. The chicken is super soft and tender and there's mala spice!! It's not the Americanized flavoring but actual spice and mala. Stir Fry Fish Fillet in Spicy Sauce-- Super soft fish and it comes with tofu too. Flavor is kind of like mapo tofu? It's good with rice!! No complaints 10/10 had a great time, love the price, and definitely will be coming back. There's a big parking lot too!

Almost everyone gets the steam fish because that is probably the best thing for your buck on the menu and it's delicious. of course this is live steamed fish and there's no fishy taste because it's immediately cooked after catch. Other notable menu items are the steamed chicken and the vermicelli. In order to get seated faster and if you're a small party, it's recommended that you share a large table. But this isn't unusual if you've ever been to Asia and sharing tables with strangers is very normalized in order to maximize the amount of people waiting and serving people quickly. The waiter service is exactly what you expect out of a restaurant that has a deal menu and people are not here for a long time for an economic dinner and lunch. They mainly speak Cantonese, but they also speak Mandarin. It can get quite noisy because the restaurant is almost always full, but that's to be expected. If you come to a restaurant that is popular with families!

We ended up getting a set for $168 this time, which came with 6 dishes. It's also $35 per lb for lobster, and I asked for the smallest one. Apparently, the smallest one was 4.8 lbs, which was another $168, so I'm not sure if they upsold me. Anyways, the food was fantastic and everyone enjoyed it. This is what I thought about the food we got. House Seafood Soup - Simple and clean soup. Good portion, and it was soothing to eat. Lots of squid. (4/5) Clams with Spicy Sauce - Large clams with tons of meat, and the sauce was fire. Always a good choice. (5/5) Crab with Salt & Pepper - Loved the seasoning, and the flavors were solid. (4.5/5) Thai Style Beef Stew - First time trying this, and it was good. A bit different, but the meat chunks were tasty and the overall flavors were good. (4/5) Sautéed Pea Sprouts - Nicely done vegetable dish. It's simple but refreshing with good flavors. (4/5) Fried Whole Fish - This dish was gone so fast because it was delicious. Nicely fried and not overly seasoned. (5/5) Signature Lobster - I feel like you have to get this here since it's their specialty. It's pricey, but in my opinion, it's the best and freshest lobster in town. Tons of green onions, seasoned well, fresh meat, and lots of lobster roe. (5/5) Service was good, and they didn't automatically add a mandatory tip for a large party. The total came out to around $364, which is pricey, but the food was phenomenal. Parking - Valet only, but they have street parking in front. I parked on the street since there were plenty of spots on a Wednesday, but I assume it gets busy on weekends.

We ordered French style beef, house special fried chow mein, honey walnut shrimp and steamed rice. First of all, the serving portions were very generous. All came in very large plates. The beef was saucy, tender and flavorful. In other restaurants, they add mushrooms to fill the plate. Here, the plate is full of just large chunks of beef. The shrimp in the honey walnut dish were large prawns. They were moist, succulent and tender. It had a rich flavor because of the mayo. The chow mein was full of chicken, shrimp, squid and octopus. It was perfectly crispy and saucy at the same time. We ate to our heart's content and ended up taking home plenty of leftovers enough for another meal. Our total bill was a little over $108 with tip. We will definitely be back. Parking is valet only and cost is $5.

Came here for the Peking duck and left very satisfied with everything else we ordered too…read more Definitely call ahead about an hour before if you want to reserve your duck. The Peking duck lived up to the hype. I liked that they use pancakes instead of the buns, and building each bite with hoisin, green onion, cucumber, duck meat, and crispy skin gave a great mix of textures and flavors. The other dishes were solid too. The pea sprouts were fresh and loaded with garlicky flavor without being overpowering. The shrimp fried rice was probably one of the best value dishes we ordered at around $13 -- lots of shrimp mixed throughout and a great filler for the table. The honey walnut shrimp was unique because it came with melon, which added a refreshing touch. The shrimp itself was super crispy and I appreciated that it wasn't drowning in sauce or overly sweet. The French style beef was another standout -- packed with fresh peppers and the meat was incredibly tender. Overall, you really can't go wrong ordering here. Great spot if you're craving Peking duck and Chinese family-style dishes.

The sweet and sour pork was unfortunately a disaster. The pork was sliced paper-thin--so thin that it felt like I was mostly eating batter with barely any meat. I was also disappointed they took the sweet and sour fish off the menu because that dish was amazing a few months ago. The five-color noodles were light, clean, and refreshing. The pork elbow was delicious with a fun, tender texture. The fish maw soup was very good and comforting, though it could have used a little more seasoning. Other than that, it was delicious. The steamed sea bass with soy sauce was incredibly soft and fragrant--a definite must-order. The scallops with vermicelli noodles were another hit: fresh, clean flavors and perfectly cooked scallops. My only suggestion would be to cut the noodles, as they came in one big clump and were difficult to serve. We ordered the beef fried rice but were given lamb instead. It was a bit gamier than expected, but still tasty. The black fungus with tofu was also excellent--well seasoned and full of flavor. Overall, there were a few misses, but the Peking duck, sea bass, scallops, pork elbow, and black fungus with tofu made the meal worth coming back for.
