    Dumplings and chicken bahn mi
    Kathryn W.

A hole in the wall cafe with a limited menu. The pricing is affordable! I love the chewy texture of the dumplings. This is an item that is not always available at other Vietnamese restaurants. I'll be going back to try out their other items :)

Been awhile since we've been back to Cafe Xu Hue. Their BBH is still one of the best in town. Cash only. Service is meh and they don't have enough chili oil bottles for each table. Our group ordered the bun bo hue dac biet ($18.50), banh canh cua bot loc ($19.50) and pho ga dac biet ($18.50). BBH has good depth, slight kick and variety of meats (pork blood, pork hock, beef slices and homemade pork ball). Chicken pho broth was homey, slightly sweet but chicken was dry.

The soup base is very flavourful and soothing! I loved the special tapioca noodles they make in house. Very nice chewy texture! I also loved the tapioca dumplings! Also chewy and the fillings are nice. Service is good. Cash only! Simple family style restaurant for a good bowl of noodles! Only street parking and the streets are busy!

Pho Ga and Bun Bo Hue both tasted very authentic and the broths had a home made flavour. Service was quick! The menu is small but basically has everything you could want.

Delicious bun bo hue and iced coffee. Cash only. On the pricy side but noodles were delicious and came with a good amount of meat. Spice level was perfect.

This is exactly the kind of no-frills, hole-in-the-wall place I'm always looking for! Glad I stumbled across this local gem on a Vancouver visit - seems family-owned and a favorite among locals as there was a line to get in. Limited menu but that makes me think all the items are ones they do well. Definitely the case with the bun bo hue I ordered, which was teeming with flavor (and spices) and very fresh. Note that this is cash only which can be a struggle for international travelers but luckily there is a bank a block down where you can withdraw some cash (for a small fee, of course). They offer free tea which you'll likely need a lot of if you order the bun bo hue - one of the spiciest versions I've tasted. Would definitely come back here the next time I have a chance.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! A hidden gem for delicious bun bo hue that will warm you right up! I've taken my Vietnamese extended family here, and everyone loved it and found it authentic in flavour. I often crave their bun bo hue in the colder months. Service is fast, and you can expect a lineup during busy lunch hours - especially on the weekend. But everything moves relatively quickly. This place is cash only. The broth is light, but packed with flavour. The lemongrass really comes through, and I enjoyed eating it with all the vegetables provided. Personally, I have to ask for less spice because I would not be able to handle their regular level. They have sate (spice) on the side if you want to add it at your own pace. I am salivating as I write this review now... I will always be back!!

I went here back in February after reading some reviews so I was like why not. Small menu with variety here. You can also order drinks from smoothie to coffee. Just an average service, no hello's or thank you's at all. Typical Asian eatery where staff doesn't smile. I ordered #4 Bun Bo Hue ($16.50) it had plentiful of meat. Soup was light not spicy. I found it to be bland somehow. More spices would be better. Noodles were perfectly cooked which was good. I found it too expensive for the food I got. This place was alright. Not too memorable enough for me to go back though. *Cash Only*

Came by to try the pho ga (chicken). Nice light soup, with freshly cooked chicken chunks. Broth was very good. Comes a quail egg too. This place still has the old school charm. Only issue is the pho only comes in 1 size, which is small. Something to keep in mind.

I've been here once before to have their signature Bun Bo Hue but this time I wanted to try something else! Ended up getting the Pho Ga Dac Biet. Came with a lot of chicken!! And an additional quail egg and crispy onions--interesting but welcome additions! Both the Bun Bo Hue and the Pho Ga were too salty for me but the flavours really hit. I don't like that they don't have regular banh pho though--they only have flat rice noodles. Their Pho Ga isn't my favourite but definitely the best Bun Bo Hue I've ever had other than my mom's! haha Service was as you expect from a family-run Vietnamese business. Love that they serve hot tea for free! The space is small and homey, I really like it here.

Pretty basic comfort viet food though. Got the che and the bbh and they were okay and nothing extra. Cash only place and okay price not expensive nor cheap. The banh bot loc was kind of different from other places though so definitely somethiny you can try at here. Cheers!

I've heard this place has the best Bun Bo Hue in Vancouver. I've never tried Bun Bo Hue so I have nothing to compare to. It is indeed very tasty. I has meatballs, pork blood, and other meats in it. The noodles were a thicker 'bun' than other places. All their items that I tried had chili in it, unlike a lot of other Viet restaurants, so be prepared for a little spice. What I really wanted to try was Banh Bot Loc (Meat Tapioca Dumpings), which I really loved from Hoi An Cafe on Victoria. I was excited because it is really expensive at Hoi An Cafe, and it is cheaper and bigger here at Cafe Xu Hue. I was a little disappointed as it didn't taste the same. It wasn't as savory, it was a lot more chewy, and the sauce wasn't very tangy but mostly just tasted like pure fish sauce. I wish there were more places that serve this dish. The other item I tried was the Banh Canh Cua Bot Loc, which is the crab meat soup. I will compare it to the crab meat soup from Bun Cha Ca Hoang Yen. Firstly, there were no floating pieces of crab, and the taste was very mildy seafoody. It had imitation crab meat and meatballs. It wasn't bad, but not as good as the one from Bun Cha Ca Hoang Yen. The item was labelled as "Vietnamese Vermicelli," but it was a different noodle. It was the tapioca flour noodle (which I googled after and realized that is what "Banh Canh" meant). They weren't long noodles like on google, but short and thick pieces. It made it hard to eat because it was so thick and chewy. It took so long to eat, that I ended up packing it home because I was eating too slow compare to others. I think it would be more enjoyable to eat slowly at home anyways. Service is very friendly, and it is owned by a family. I would come back but only for the Bun Bo Hue.

Cafe Xu Hue is a little hole in the wall spot that specializes in bun bo hue. Every time I walk by on a weekend, there's a line. You'll find them next door to Ngon Banh Mi & Tea. I've been a few times now. The inside only has 8 tables (with a total of 34 seats). Service is efficient and food comes out quickly. They bring a cup of cold tea when you first sit down. The menu is short with 9 dishes and 9 drinks (aka. my kind of menu). Trip #1 - Banh bot loc (#7) ($6.50) - Vietnamese siu mai dumplings. More like tapioca dumplings. You get 10 pieces; these had a great sticky and bouncy texture. - Bun bo hue dac biet (#4) ($11.75) - spicy Vietnamese vermicelli with sliced pork and beef in soup. Of course, I had to try their BBH. Excellent broth; spicy and aromatic. Loved that you get a variety of meats including pork blood. Trip #2 We dropped in on a late Saturday afternoon (around 3:00pm). - Banh canh cua bot loc (#5) ($11.95) - Vietnamese vermicelli with crab meat in soup. I've never had this dish before but it's unique. They use thick sliced noodles (it had the same texture as the bot loc). The broth is excellent; it slowly grows on you in depth and flavour. Bowl came with a couple pieces of shrimp, crab stick, pork balls, grilled onion and cilantro. - Banh mi dac biet (#2) ($5.00) - bought a banh mi to eat for dinner. This was just okay; nothing particularly memorable about it. Trip #3 We dropped in on a slow, uneventful Tuesday (around 5:30pm). - Herbs - shredded banana blossom, basil, bean sprouts, limes and hot pepper. - Bun bo hue dac biet (#4) ($11.75) - something's changed in the broth since the first time I had their BBH. Less depth and aromatics and more MSG this time around. All the meats were good; sliced beef shank, meatballs (seemed homemade), Vietnamese ham, pork blood and pig's foot. - Pho ga dac biet (#6) ($11.75) - broth was clean and gentle. The wider rice noodles were unexpected but I liked them. Quail egg, decent amount of chicken meat, garlic and cilantro. Not sure if this is better than My Chau's version but it satisfied our bellies. Cash only. Love the small menu but the BBH isn't what it used to be.

The space is much nicer, with high ceilings and lots of light - great looking bistro. I ended up trying the following: - Mussels: Very good. A nice little snack, although it would be easy to recreate at home. - Lamb Chops: Very good. Cooked just right, and the pepper sauce added extra flavour. - Fried Frog Legs: Very good. This was probably the surprise dish for me. They weren't just the legs, but the entire bottom of the frog, so the pieces were huge. The garlic, butter and chili flakes gave it a extra punch. I really enjoyed this one. - Pho Bo: Good. Not the best pho I've had, but it's good enough to stand on it's own. Service was quite good. Very cheerful and quite attentive. Overall a nice meal. It's a great space, the food is solid, and service to match. What I really like is having the variety of both French and Vietnamese dishes, without either of them suffering in quality. Only downside is that is it expensive for what you get.

Went in for lunch with my granddaughter, both of us fans of Vietnamese food. Ordered Green Papaya Salad ($12), Lemongrass Chicken on Vermicelli with one spring roll ($17), one lime soda ($6.50) and one pop ($3). Food arrived within minutes of ordering. Portions were very generous. The salad was perfect with everything very fresh, as it should be but often isn't in some places. Plump prawns and the scent and taste of basil was prominent. Delicious! The lemongrass chicken (we ordered extra chicken) with a spring roll was also very generous. We did not finish it between the two of us. Again, all was fresh, tasty and hot. This is one of our standard orders and Pho Goodness did not disappoint. Granddaughter declared it better than at our regular favourite, and Pho Goodness is around the corner from her home and not a bus ride out to Kingsway! Service was friendly and responsive. We asked that the volume be turned off on the massive TV over our heads (which nobody was watching) (it was), requested a glass for the pop and immediately received a tumbler full of ice. Lovely. The Garden Rolls were absolutely the #1 worst ones we've ever eaten! We've had hundreds of fresh rolls at dozens of places and sadly, none were as tasteless as these. They consisted of noodles, a bit of flavorless tofu and cucumber. Fresh rolls MUST have at least one or more of the following: fresh mint, fresh cilantro or fresh Thai Basil. Hestia's had NONE!. To add insult to injury, the watery sauce also had NO flavor. To add more insult, they were baggy and poorly wrapped and the innards kept falling out. Not fun and definitely not good. The king oyster mushrooms were very good, but there was a ton of pink mayo dousing it. I would have preferred the sauce be in a separate bowl so we could choose how much dipping we'd like to do. The saffron tofu bowl was sensational! Perfectly spiced and full of a huge variety of well-cooked veggies plus the saffron rice was good too. No one came during our meal to ask if we needed anything or to ask how our meal was. The customer service is in need of some work.
