Way overrated! Owner should take more pride in the pastries considering how popular this place is

This place had good pastries. I didn't eat any but my friends had a cannoli and a choco cheesecake. My espresso was decent. Here is why 2 stars. Dirty. Bathroom was DISGUSTING for a bakery cafe. Second my friend found part of a straw wrapper in her coffee. Yech. read more

get the amaretti cookies!!! perfect flavor: not overly sweet and heavy on the almond flavor. perfect consistency: crunchy exterior and moist chewy cake-like interior. $12/lb works out roughly to $0.50/each. when they were closed for vacation, i tried the amaretti from ferrari on grand (known for tourist-clogged sidewalks & gelato) and was sorely disappointed. i will never stray again! read more

I really like this place. It can get a bit crowded on weekends during tourist season, but it's really nice to sit here with a coffee and a pastry near the front window and watch the foot traffic on Mulberry St. The pastries are as good as any in Little Italy, particularly the San Giuseppe cakes in late winter / early spring. read more

I LOVE this place, it's like a little sanctuary from the rest of Mulberry Street. I love being able to step inside and feel like I am in a totally different place. I originally found it after walking straight in and out of Ferrara which was way too commercial for me. It can be busy at times (Hello San Gennaro!) but the menu is delicious (both drinks and desserts). I bring all my friends here and they love it. read more

Excellent rum cake. I always get the zoupa englese ( excuse my spelling) for my families B-Days. It's fresh and soft. It's a wet cake, but it's not drenched with rum. I don't know how the pastries are, I only buy that cake. I am not a pastry eater. read more

Tried the tiramisu and lets just say it was a disgrace to Italy. Soaked coffee cake with non mascarpone cream is not considered tiramisu. Tiramisu is lady fingers soaked in coffee and rum. Very sad my Italian dessert craving wasn't met. read more

The customer service from manager was horrible...acted as if he'd prefer no one to be there. It's the 21st century and they take only cash..,ok I get it, wanna save money on taxes but now customer has to walk across strt an pay $4 for cash. In search of the perfect cannoli? Not quite here. I would have given Caffe Roma 5 stars, except that the cannoli are pre filled! That means the shells are soggy. Oh, to go back to childhood days when Ferrara's (Chicago) filled your cannoli when you ordered them. Too bad, because Caffe Roma has the best cinnamon flavored crema, I have ever tasted. Cafe Roma is a really nice shop in Little Italy. The staff is nice, but the service is a bit slow.There are tons of cookies and pastries to choose from. A good place to stop and have a bite to eat or a cup of coffee while looking around the area. read more

The cappuccino and canoli were delicious. And although I've only had a lobster tail one other time (at a Wegman's grocery store, no less) I'm going to go for the stretch and say Caffe Roma's lobster tail was the best I've ever had. Perfect stop for a pre-dinner dessert. read more

it's easy to get caught in the tourist traps in NYC, but caffe roma is not one of them. they've been around since the late 1800 and is a must stop for dessert and coffee after dinner whether it be in little italy or chinatown. read more

came for a double espresso/ cappuccino & for some little italian treats. there was no one inside, the owner (old guy) ignored us when we entered the room, but two younger ppl, after some time greeted us. i guess they were new, they were little flustered & the grumpy old guy, would correct them. awkward!!!! sat by the window & it was a great spot, since it was the lightest pot cuz it was so dark inside. the little pastries were good with our beverages. the shots were delicious. the other beverage, the cappuccino came out as a latte. and it was too strong for a half-shot that we ordered. read more

Situated in the northern tip of Little Italy, Caf Roma brings you back a generation. Darker and bigger than your average caf, Caf Roma carries old ways in the air. I ordered a cappuccino and a canoli and both were served to me and both were delicious. The staff is really friendly. Being Italian has something to do with it. read more

The only thing I've had here are the rainbow cookies- but they are fantastic!! they're the best ones i've had since my grandma... moist, flavorful and pricy - they're worth every penny ($14/lb). i always stop by Da Gennaros for lunch and then walk over to this place for dessert. read more

Buying Italian cookies by the pound can be a good thing or a bad thing. You can get 10 cookies for under $4 which is a bargain. A bargain that will bring me back here time and time again. The cheap pricetag coupled with it being one block from my house make Caffe Roma a yummy dessert stop. read more

This isn't the first time I am the first person in a restaurant and I bring in the business. I really wanted tiramisu, and it was 9PM, cold, and I was tired of wandering. To that matter, we stumbled upon this cafe. At first we thought it was closed, it was so empty, but we cautiously stepped in and it was, in fact, open! Now onto the food. The hot chocolate was quite good, not too sweet, and definitely chocolate y. The cappuccino was standard. Nothing much to say there. They RAN OUT OF TIRASMISU! I was so sad. I got a cream puff instead. The cream was more like custard, and I didn't like it. However, the puff pastry was not bad. The service was OK, when we walked in wondering if it was open, no one stepped up to welcome us in. In fact, we hovered outside for a good 5 minutes wondering how open the place was. We walked half way into the restaurant before someone waved that we could sit anywhere. They should have paid us to eat there, because NO ONE was there until we came in, and people started to wander inside. One of the forks came a little dirty, but once we brought it to their attention they quickly replaced it. I don't think I would go here again of my own will, but it wasn't a terrible experience. We have had both great food and great times at Cafe Roma each and every time we have visited. The cannoli has to be the best in the city, and the coffee drinks are consistently fresh and robust. Their gelato is outstanding, and on the Fridays in the summer when Mulberry is closed to automobile traffic, there are few better ways to enjoy a warm summer evening than to hang with friends at Cafe Roma. My roommate and I were seriously craving gelato and saw that Caffe Roma had some so we ventured in. Our friend was with us and ordered a hot chocolate and we ordered the Oreo cookie and the Chocolate gelato. I hear the hot chocolate was good but I wish I had just ordered a cannoli since it sounds as though that is Caffe Roma's staple. They shouldn't even offer gelato. It's ice cream whose flavor reminds me of when they would serve parve (dairy free) ice cream at Bar Mitzvahs and Jewish weddings. I finished it but after spending $7 for a couple scoops of really crappy ice cream and only decent service, I really regret coming here. read more

Fantastic cannolis. I had the tiramisu cake & it was okay. It would have been better if while I was eating it the waitress didn't reach in between me and my companion and shove the bill in between us abruptly. Seriously? I just registered to warn other people. After she served us she sat in the corner and started coughing alot. Ok for starters....the lady at the counter had a serious attitude problem. I proceeded to be nice and place my order. We ordered a lot as we were taking some home to family for Christmas. I got my Dad the blueberry pie which he loved. The cannoli's were average....I've had better. There was these little chocolate chip cookies with raspberry preserves in the middle which were out of this world. The cheesecakes were good..not super great, but good. Came to have a cappuccino and share a pastry with a friend. The cappuccino was actually a latte and when I brought it up to the staff, they said that that was how they do cappuccinos. Thats fine, just call it a latte. A cappuccino is not whatever you want to sound fancy. Then the pastry, a napoleon, was not good. The pastry was soggy and the layers were mostly cream. Was a little awkward as their sit down to order policy is not immediately recognizable. The glass case of pastries is intriguing and to order off a menu seems to be almost a shame?? When we walked in we went straight for the coffee and then we're told to sit unless we wanted take out we did so and the coffee was AMAZING. Ordered an amaretto latte, was so delicious. Also had biscotti and tiramisu. While we were enjoying our treats many people came in and were upset by the sit down policy and ended up taking everything to go. Omg one of the fewest places that still look exactly like when my grandparents were children. It's beautiful tin ceilings a eloquent reminder of early day little Italy. The pastries are deliciously rich to savor with a mini espresso. And the history is rather interesting! Do not go here!!!!! Run rudely for tourists only. Gives tourists a poor impression. Shame on them! As a NYer, I try new places, especially if old tin ceilings and reminiscent of days gone by... Went this afternoon, what an insulting experience!! Service was slow and sour. 2 waitresses would have preferred to be waterboarded than serving guests. Espresso and pastry was fine. When we noted to our waitress that the experience was less than pleasant, she responded "Then you should have gone to Ferrara's." Incredible! We then asked to speak with the manager, and she noted that she was it. Refused to give us her name. Interestingly, while we sat there, about 10 people came in and left without sitting down due to the poor attitudes of the servers. Smart people! read more
