We ended up here after half a day walking the SMU campus and the Bush center gardens on gorgeous Sunday afternoon. The kid wanted pasta, as usual, so although Snider Plaza has a lot of eating options, this one was the one for us. The restaurant has been here for decades and is showing its age a bit. The kid noticed "the dirty" ceiling. In general, the interior is attractive and I like that you can see the exposed pizza oven. Our server Maria was fine. She was pleasant and efficient. No complaints about service. The food was a bit of a disappointment. The wife and kid shared a Caesar salad and it was WAY overdressed. I had a Caprese salad and was disappointed. Usually, a Caprese is tomato slices with slices of Mozzarella cheese with basil on top. This salad was mostly arugula, which is not my favorite. There were just 3 small quarters of tomato and 3 small rounds of mozzarella. The wife and I shared a Margherita pizza. I thought the flavor was good and generally enjoyed it. The wife thought the crust tasted like bread dough and I see her point. It was not thin and crispy like we enjoy. The crust did have a nice char on the bottom though. The kid, who has so much pasta and red sauce in her life that she could write a small book, did not really care for her spaghetti and red sauce. read more

The focaccia was not focaccia, it was a (tasty) flatbread with garlic and rosemary, but they used the wrong word.. the pizza was really mid and likely just the same dough as the "focaccia". Chicken parm was fine and so was gnocchi. This is very much a family restaurant with lots of kids running around which is totally fine and don't mind that! But yeah food is pretty disappointing. And while I get they were having a busy day, our waiter was literally hustling us out the door, he even said "we have other customers who need to come in" even though there were open tables. We err out late one evening when we got out of the a show and I should have known better but our friends wanted to go so we tagged along. The service was fine. Thats about it. I decided to order a fairly easy typical standard for Italian restaurants, chicken Parmesan. It was already $22 which is pretty high for that type of entrée, but then it arrived. I'd say the chicken was about 3" x 5"in size at best Tip to tip. That wouldn't be as bad, except that it was razor thin. About as thick as a piece of flounder, but that includes the breading on both sides. It was dry and barely enough chicken for that price. The pasta was a fairly small portion and the sauce on both was Not good at all. I'd say the consistency of Franco SpaghettiOs, without a hint of seasoning, tomatoes, onion, or anything else in it. The pasta was served al dente, which, if that was the intent was fine, but considering the other foods not being great, I'm guessing it was undercooked. The entree did not include a salad or any side items. I asked for bread a few times and finally brought out some partially stale bread. My wife got a main entrée salad as well, but it was not much bigger than a large dinner salad. Not impressed. I've been to a lot of Italian restaurants. I'd almost consider this the Denny's of Italian restaurants, but with much higher prices. read more

PP reminds me of your standard Greek restaurant. Not very impressive, that is, until our food came out. Then I knew it we were in business : ) My "go to" every time I visit a new Italian restaurant is spaghetti and meatballs. The waitress recommended the sausage, so I went with it, and I was not disappointed. The marinara sauce was excellent as was the sausage. Penne Pomodoro is close to being an institution in Snider Plaza. What I mean is that Penne, if memory serves me correctly, has been in Snider Plaza for over twenty years. It hasn't been around as long as some of the other long-standing restaurants in Snider such as Kuby's Sausage House and Amore Italian, but it's longevity demonstrates that it has been adopted by the folks who frequent SP. Some years ago, I used to spend a lot of time in SP since I lived a block away for a couple of years. I never considered restaurants there as "destination" type of eateries serving dishes that you'd lobby for a Michelin star. Most of the joints were good based on "neighborhood" restaurant standards and you could get a tasty meal without a lot of reservation drama and putting on your Sunday best. The same holds true for Penne Pomodoro. In our most recent last minute, walk-in, visit on a Wednesday night, most tables were full of folks that looked like they were from the surrounding area (families, kids, and grandma and grandpa), as well as a number of tables occupied by students from nearby SMU. On that night, we were looking for quick and easy; we weren't looking for a production. The menu offers Italian-type fare ranging from Bruschetta to cripsy mozzarella; chicken parmigiana to grilled salmon; pizza; create your own pasta to lobster ravioli; and an assortment of sides and sandwiches. On our visit I ordered Focaccia bread (which they forgot until reminded), and Red Snapper Livornese. Both were what I expected; good and satisfying, but nothing out of the ordinary for a solid neighborhood joint. So if you're in the area, looking for a pleasant meal, without a 4-week reservation wait, give Penne a try. And if you're in the mood, give the nearby area a walk and guess where I used to live. read more

Price for tea was more expensive on the bill than the menu. I came here for lunch and built my own pasta with penne, bolognese, and sausage. I also split the calamari appetizer with a friend. Everything was good - the aioli sauce that came with our calamari complemented the fried dish really well. The pasta was good but nothing outstanding. I do not think adding a protein on your pasta is necessary - a little pricy and the bolognese sauce already had ground meat in it. We were served quickly and offered bread and an olive oil dip, which was alright. We sat inside because it was really hot at the time we came but I would recommend sitting outside - the outdoor dining area is cute and better lit compared to the indoor seating area. read more

I had the stuffed shells which I also thought was very good. The pasta was cooked perfectly. The dish wasn't overloaded with spinach and was quite cheesy and tasty. I do think $17 for 5 stuffed shells is a bit pricey though. However, when we asked for a refill (again, comes with the service), it was clear that the bread was bottom of the barrel and it was extremely stale. Penne Pomodoro is a delicious option for relatively casual Italian dining. To start, we ordered the Meatballs Marinara. The ricotta cheese in this dish was oh so amazing. It was a great appetizer choice. I seriously cannot get over how much I loved the ricotta. Then, for my main, I elected to create my own pasta. I chose penne with pink sauce and grilled chicken. It's a great place for a family dinner with younger kiddos. I've dined at Penne Pomodoro a few times while in the area. It has a laid back vibe. Staff were friendly and the food was good. My son loves Italian food so he tends to get the pizza or "white" sauce pasta (Alfredo). I usually get the mussels. They have complimentary bread for the table. Honestly food was just crappy. Bland and flavorless. I never expected such disastrous food from Italian restaurant. We ordered bruschetta and California pizza. They both seemed so similar. Bruschetta was just few grilled bread with chopped tomatoes and pizza came with raw and uncooked tomatoes & avocado slices. The menu said it had cilantro as well, but came without cilantro which made it even more horrible to eat . Just nightmare!!!!!! We didn't even care to ask the stewardess about the missing cilantro and somehow managed to finish it and left the place. What a waste of money? Staff should help the customer IF they have ordered similar tasting food. I should have gone to another restaurant in the block. The only good thing we ordered was blood Orange Margarita. Omg, so scrumptious! I'm so glad I discovered this via Yelp. Just moved to Dallas and needed a good Italian spot. This place seems idy bitty from the outside but it is long and still quaint when you're in. They have do have a small bar area you can wait by and a small front patio. It gets busy but the staff is friendly and seats in a timely matter. I only eat brunch when I go here and it rocks! The food is excellent and they have $1 mimosas and Bellinis. My friends and I arrived around 1pm on a Friday afternoon and the establishment was nearly empty. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan which was around $15 and came with spaghetti as well. My friend ordered lasagna Chicken Parmesan: 3/5, it was crispy and not soggy despite the literal MOUND of cheese piled on top. The chicken was quite thin and I wish it were thicker.
