I stopped in at around 7:15 to get a take out order of Wor Wonton Soup. The broth was so salty I had to put a whole lemon in it to be able to eat a small portion. What a disappointment! I ordered one lunch portion of chicken with mixed vegetables and one dinner portion of moo goo gai pan plus a cup of hot & sour soup and a cup of wonton soup. All of it was tasteless, unpalatable. The sauce on both entrees was watery with absolutely no flavor and the vegetables in both dishes were WAY overcooked, mushy. Even the wonton soup was tasteless. The fried rice was really just brown rice. Neither one of us ate much. This place used to be great. What happened? As I was walking in to pick up my order, the staff were bringing in 4 large Costco pizzas. Guess that should have been a clue!! read more

Came her to enjoy some lunch. My friend ordered chicken and string beans and it came with a huge chunk of teflon in it and cracked her tooth. We complained and they acted like it was no big deal and just comped her meal. The manager didn't even come and apologize. We were outraged and they could care less. Beautifully decorated strip mall chinese restaurant that serves some pretty good dishes. I was happy with all the items we ordered. Service was a bit slow and unattentive, and almost a little "attitude", but we enjoyed our meal in a nice corner booth. Pleasant ambiance, and very busy for a Tuesday night. Reasonably priced dishes and decent sized portions make it stay on my list of go to places for a reasonable Asian american style meal. I wish I could give this place a better review, but I also wish there was decent Chinese food here in the Coachella Valley - my reviews of CIE Sichuan and JOY are online, and they corner the market in their niche(s). CIE has the authenticity, JOY has the pretentiousness of pricy high-end exotica with lots of second-hand smoke. What all three have in common is attempted décor (at widely varying levels of success) and a full bar. Canton Bistro's food is either way too sweet or way too salty; chalk that up to American tastes. They tout a vegetarian pork specialty on the menu and on the video loop in the dining room that has never been available to the customers. My most recent moo shu arrived already assembled (a cardinal sin) and looked like deflated burritos, tasting bland and overly salted. Potstickers were overcooked, dark and crunchy and devoid of any presentation; my wife's roast duck was pretty much the same. Talk about inconsistent - we both ordered mai tais - one was mostly grenadine, the other mostly orange juice. The orange garnish was really tasty, however. Service was good, nothing worth commenting about. We've been here a dozen times, begging the question about the definition of insanity. We keep hoping it'll get better. read more

I use to love coming here, even though the skinny older asian lady was always rude and had a face like she was smelling poop all the time when her job is to attend people. This place is kind of infamous in my group of friends, mostly due to an elderly man we used to do home care for. He LOVED their wonton soup. In fact it was one of the last things he requested before he passed. On his birthday all his friends would get him gift cards here, it was pretty cute. This place is usuall very good, however , my last order was a total botch. We ordered mushu pork fried shrimp and egg rolls . There were no pancakes or plum/hoisin sauce for the mushu. There were no dipping sauces for the shrimp ( such as hot mustard or sweet and sour sauce ). I was very disappointed so I called. An apology was offerred, but nothing else. I only live a mile away and they did not offer to bring any sauces or pancakes or reduce my bill. It was very poor customer service and they probably have lost this customer. We've eaten at Canton Bistro maybe 3 times (it's the most convenient Chinese restaurant from our place in Indio), and each time the food was just okay. Another thing though that really struck me from the very beginning was the preferential treatment they give to white customers. Even my brother in law and his wife made the same observation. BTW, we are Asians. We became victims of this racial discrimination last night. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were told that there was an available table and that they were just cleaning and preparing it. Lo and behold, we saw the table being given to a group of white customers who came after us. The waitress came back to us and told us that we have a 30 minute wait; we said that she just gave the table to another group. We were so upset that we walked out (never to return again) and gave them a piece of our mind. So, if you are Asian don't even bother going to the restaurant. If you're looking for an authentic Chinese food, you'll be in for a great disappointment. If you happen to come at a busy time, you'll be last in the line to be served even though you arrived before the white customers. read more

We came/had take out from the Canton Bistro for the first time last night, after reading some Neighborhood reviews. The food was pretty good. After calling the restaurant, I learned that their dishes were supposedly pretty good size and made for 2 people. Thus, I ordered cashew shrimp. The one item, with white rice cost us over $18, which would have been okay for a "large" order of the dish, I guess. However, what we got was a small, individual sized take out dish that was very shallow, holding only enough food for ONE person!! Obviously this was NOT what we expected for the price & the description given over the phone... I've NEVER been to a Chinese restaurant that served such "SMALL" amounts of food. It kind of defeats the purpose.. ? There wasn't anywhere near enough for two people! Thus, although the food seems to be pretty good, the price is HIGH for one very small dish! Therefore, I doubt we will be back, unless they have lunch "specials" or something...Seniors can't afford their HIGHER prices for LESS food. read more

The experience was more like a 2.5. We ordered Egg Foo Young and Sesame Chicken. That is after we waited 20 mins to be helped. Thankfully the hostess noticed we had not been served and actually took our order. We were there before 1:00 and they should've been well staffed for lunch - but this was def not the case. The Egg Foo Young was not at all traditional and there was nothing in the menu to indicate it would be different. It was extremely dry - lots of onions (that tasted burnt) - gravy was runny with no flavor - but moistened food enough to eat it. Bleh. Sesame Chicken was very acidic and lacking sauce. And for a moderate to high price I would've expected more in flavor and presentation. Lastly I can't fault the staff for the extremely slow service as it was painfully obvious that staffing was inadequate to accommodate a very modest lunch service. Sadly, we used to love this place and previously would have given it a four star rating, but one terrible experience ruined the whole thing. During our last meal there, my chicken tasted like a salt block and my wife had glass shards in her food. The worst part was their unapologetic response to us when we pointed out the glass. Visited Canton Bistro for the first time in a very long time. The food was as good as I remembered. I had the shrimp in lobster sauce and combination lo mien noodles. I also had the appetizer crispy tempura vegetables. If this sounds familiar, it is because it is what I had at China Wok which is also owned by the same people. I have been there a few times but the last one was awful. The service was terrible and took forever. I ordered orange beef and I guarantee there was not one piece of beef in what they served. Not only that but I was with a friend and his food came 7 minutes before mine, which is awkward, to say the least. He was uncomfortable eating without me and I was uncomfortable making him wait. Tonight my husband and I returned to Canton Bistro. We have eaten there before and always find the food quality to be good and tonight it was true again. We have had slow service before but tonight was unbelievable. The restaurant was not full and had empty tables. The hostess was busy socializing with a table across the room and one of the guests at that table finally pointed out that we were waiting at the hostess desk. She finally acknowledged us and then took a phone call. We continued to wait until a busboy took us to our table. We sat in our booth for 12-15 mins. without one single person stopping at our table or even glancing in our direction. Finally we ask a waitress if we were seated at her table and she just said "no" and did not seem to care or make an effort to find out who was assigned to our table. Again, the same busboy that seated us came back to see if anyone had been by to take our order. He was very helpful, he got us water and then actually took our order. Only after he had brought out our first course did anyone bother to ask if we were doing o.k. or did we need anything. We will probably give it another try at a later date but will not sit and be totally ignored for 15 mins. again. Next time we will leave for another option. read more
