This place is a neighborhood gem. I have never had a bad meal or bad service ever. The pancakes are amazing, fluffy pillows of deliciousness. It is almost always packed on a weekend so be prepared. It is small but since they are fast and efficient the wait is never long and always worth it. I'm there every weekend and by now they know all the regular clients and it feels nice. I have lived around the Inwood area for years and would frequent Capitol Dinner. I'm glad to see they actually kept the dinner around as we are missing actual dinners in the neighborhood. I wanted to love this place. Really, I did. I had a really long, stressful week and thought it would do my spirit good to finally check out the little greasy-spoon diner that looks as if it hasn't been touched since the Sixties. I ordered the Rueben Deluxe and my friend ordered Spaghetti. When the food arrived, I was incredibly disappointed. My Rueben Deluxe was nothing but a clump of dry, corned beef on a piece of un toasted white bread, surrounded by fries that were overlooked. It was basically inedible. My friend's spaghetti was greasy and tasteless. The sauce had a real bad taste, like it came out of a can and had sat there for a few days. It was really gross. Needless to say, I won't be going back and it certainly was not worth the $28.50 we paid for that garbage. Oh, yeah! And it is cash only...you find that out when you attempt to pay, which leaves an even more bitter taste in your mouth than the meal you somehow managed to swallow. AVOID. read more

Recently tried this place out while visiting family in Inwood. It's a great, classic diner. Solid food, quick and friendly service, great location, pleasant ambiance. The food won't win any huge culinary awards, but it's diner food so that's kind of the point anyway. Sounds like the renovations I'm seeing mentioned in other reviews have really paid off. read more

Stopped by on Friday for the first time. The food and coffee were better than expected. It's a time warp and deserves the communities support. In a sea of bland corporate perfection, unique small places with truly historic aura need to be protected. This is one of them. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the breakfast and coffee served. Do not order fillet minion or a latte in a place like this. It's eggs, omelets and home fries with toast people! Pre pandemic, was happy to see they renovated the old diner and made this place more appealing and the food was decent for diner food. However, on our most recent visit, I was pretty offended and hurt that as soon as we were seated, the waitress ONLY looked at me and asked for my vaccination card. She didn't ask my partner nor did I see her ask anyone else who came after me including the gentleman that was seated very close to us. I took out my card and placed it on the table but she didn't seem to acknowledge it. The food looked okay, unfortunately, it missed the mark with the lack of flavor. Safe to say, we will not be returning especially after the whole incident about the vaccine card. read more

Great food, great service, good prices and best breakfast spot in Inwood! I really enjoy the Texas Burger, Burritos are slamming and the Eggs Benedict is near perfect. Unlike other restaurants in the area, they have set prices that don't change based on your race. To often you get overcharged based on how you look and speak, it's refreshing to be treated equal. This diner ignored my request in the Grub Hub app to include Russian dressing with my my Reuben sandwich today. Not only did they ignore my request, but even after 2 calls over 45 minutes to request the dressing, and after telling me it would come in 2 minutes, an hour later it still hadn't come. In fact it NEVER came. The comments section in Grub Hub is not there so it can just be ignored. After the dozens and dozens of times I have ordered from Capitol you would think they would have cared more about correcting their own mistakes. read more

Very old school spot with a lot of history. Place has been here since 1926 and it was a restaurant even before then. Coffee was way better than your usual diner drip, pancakes were delicious and the staff on point. It's got this long lost glamour that's hard to find these days. read more

One of the few diners left in my area of Inwood. It's not bad just nothing really stands out and its a bit pricey for the level of effort they put in. They have a pretty small kitchen so it sometimes takes a while for you to get your food and the waiters really don't care. Despite the negatives we keep going back, because nothing about it is absolutely terrible. Come here hung over and in dire need of some eggs and coffee. read more

The Capital Diner which reopened recently is terrific! The food is great, the staff is lovely, and the new decor is sparkling clean and very inviting. Another thing that I really like is the music that they play. It's just loud enough to enjoy, not loud enough to be intrusive, and they clearly put some thought into what their clientele of families and long time residents would enjoy, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bill Withers - what's netter than Ain't No Sunshine Wben She's Gone? This is a magnificent diner. The Irish omelet with bacon, bangers and corned beef in it was hot and tasty - decent potatoes and coffee, too. Another good sign: cops eat here. This is really a premier greasy spoon diner. It's been around since 1927, and all four walls have different treatments, which I think is amazing. This is definitely a place where everyone knows your name. All neighborhood locals come in regularly, and if you want a feel for what Inwood really is like, this is the place to go. You'll get crowd from both east and west of Broadway. For food, I would stick with breakfast or fried items, like grilled cheese, mozzarella sticks, as is usually this case with diners. SUCH a HUGE improvement over the old place. Good food, clean, food's still hot when you get delivery, good service, they call back if there's a problem with your order. Great melding of an old-school diner with some modern updates. On walking in it feels like you're entering a place thats been there for 60 years but also just opened. It seems like they took an old place and updated it in just the right places, so it still feels nostalgic but not out of date. The best part, though, was that the food was quick to the table and delicious. The breakfast burrito i had was cooked perfectly, not greasy, and complimented with the best home fries i've had in manhattan. Definitely coming back for more. read more

A dying breed. This place is struggling in an atmosphere of high rent and speciality cafes. When I moved to the neighborhood 24 years ago, The Capital was larger. Now it's chopped in half -- the other half was sold to another business. The place hasn't been refurbished in years. It's drab and the waiters are old and tired, but really really nice, and they pay attention to you and recognize you as a neighbor. This place needs support everybody! Came here this morning for two eggs over medium, home fries, and sausage links- Yes, they are real sausage links not the fake crap. Also ordered a bran muffin and some grapefruit juice. The food is OK for what it is and is reasonably priced. Like what others have said, it is an old looking, hole in the wall.
