I found Captain Jack's to be an ideal location when spending the day at E. Matunuck Beach. The take out counter makes it easy if you are sandy and still in beach mode. The staff are friendly. Absolutely loved this place. It is certainly a place for tourists, and I'm perfectly okay with that, because it was your typical American food, and I did not have a single complaint about it. OH, and their drink menu was fabulous. Now if you're looking for great ambiance, tjhis probably isn't the place to go unless you request the deck to sit on ( Just make sure to bring some bug spray because it's on a marsh and the mosquitoes will eat you alive. ) I will say the Fish and Chips were extremely good, the piece of fish must have been the size of my forearm ( I don't care about size that much, but Damn it was a huge piece of fish!! ) Their homemade potato chips were also very good. Worst customer service, food just ok. Would never return. Waited on one hamburger for 40 min, after multiple inquiries it only came out when I insisted manager go back to check kitchen, then it magically appeared within minutes. Meanwhile the rest of our seafood had been ready and was now cold. Staff not at all apologetic. We feel manager should've offered a substitution or money off our bill but this idea seemed foreign to them. Granted hamburger not the best thing to order here but went for team dinner after tournament & not all kids like seafood. If it's on the takeout menu it should be something easily doable. I've been going here for many years but our last visit was not very good. We had fish n chips that were so greasy and had so much batter that we had to pull some off. The creamy chowder was more like broth with very little cream or clams in it. I couldn't eat the cole slaw. My salad was nothing more than bagged greens with a few cukes and cherry tomatoes in it. Our food took quite a while to come out and there were very few other diners there. I did like sitting on the porch because the view is always nice. I just wish they'd update the dining room and recipes. It's a great family vacation spot. They could benefit from the overflow from the Matunuck Oyster Bar. I've patronized this place off and on for 30+ years. Its best attributes are its location, near Matunuck Beach, and the fact that it has a takeout. I think Capt Jack's has stayed open because it lacks competition. Some may like the food, but I think that they are just settling. Most don't. The takeout works for people who have kids. If you are in SoCo for vacation, I'd recommend that you head over to Monahan's Dock or Iggy's at Narragansett Pier for takeout. If you want a nice meal, Jim's Dock in Jerusalem, and the Matunuck Oyster Bar right across from Captain Jack's are much better. read more

We like the drive there and the food is just ok

It can be very hard finding a place to eat with kids. My sisters and I tried this place out with six young children for a late lunch after leaving the beach. We were able to sit out on the back deck which was great for the kids to have less restrictions, move around a bit and we didn't have to worry about their volume as much. The waitress was awesome with the kids, friendly and very patient in taking orders, the service (food delivery) was very quick and everything tasted great too. read more

I have a love-hate relationship with this restaurant. It is located right next to East Matunick Beach and my family and myself usually visit at least once a year for an after the beach bite. Apparently, the Matunick Oyster Bar is amazing (or so I've heard) and is right down the road, but Captain Jack's is more for your average Joe seeking a casual and relatively quick bite. As a fried seafood lover, Captain Jacks has proven pretty yummy for such things, but do not try anything remotely fancy. It is your basic seafood and chowda type joint (sometimes even the lobster roll can be a stretch). My family loves to sit outside on the deck when available. As previous postings have mentioned, this is overlooking a marsh and the bugs can be quite harsh. This past season they have invested in some sort of noise machine that keeps the bugs and critters away. However, BEWARE if you have good(?) hearing, I sat down outside and after minutes of pestering my parents if they heard anything (with no luck), was about ready to scream at the kid on the side of me playing with his Nintendo DS (assuming this annoying humming noise had to be coming from his game). I eventually asked the waitress and she explained, but by the time our meals were finished I raced to the parking lot quite fast to escape the screeching. Also, from my experiences (and let me know if you have had any luck), they do not substitute ANYTHING, usually even for an additional charge they will not. They are sticklers and I can only imagine how tough it must be for people with certain allergies. So overall, Pros: Fried seafood, chowder, yummy frozen drinks, desserts Cons: Overpriced for what you get, certainly not gourmet, no substitutions, and that damn noise machine! read more

Cap'n Jack's Restaurant is a family seafood dining spot. It's a fantastic value for all your seafood cravings. They also offer great desserts. The family atmosphere restaurant with friendly staff provide excellent service with a view. I recommend taking the trip for value from RI's seafood best. RECOMMEND. read more

We went here on a Saturday night, but it was early. We arrived at 5:40pm and it was not particularly crowded but the service was terribly slow. The old-time waitress we had was inflexible. We told her we wanted to order our food (we certainly had the menus in front of us for a good fifteen minutes before she came over, and our friends needed to get back on the road home). The waitress refused, saying she needed to take the drink orders first, okay? She had that annoying habit of telling you something and ending it with a question, as if you could say no. It was clear that you could not; this meal was going to go her way, or the highway. We should have chosen the highway, because this was just the start of a very long and frustrating experience. After she brought our drinks, she was not ready to take our order. She said she had to come back, okay? Well, so much for customer service! When she finally returned to take our order, she wanted it to go in a certain order, which I can understand with a table of seven, but it wasn't like it was a table of 12. When I ordered the artichoke dip as an appetizer, she said that it takes a long time. I said that's why I wanted to place our order when we first sat down. She didn't appreciate the comment. So much for the customer always being right! We told her to bring the food as it was ready, and she did, but it took a while for the appetizers to come, including the dip at last. (My friends were already ribbing me that she might have spit in the food.) But the really annoying part was that it took forever for the entrees to be delivered. Like an hour. We could see all the tables around us - the ones that came in after us - being served their meals by their waitresses. We were not so lucky. Our server was MIA. Our group was antsy and eventually angry that this meal was never going to end. Finally, two of us got up to speak to the manager regarding the long delay for our entrees. The manager was good; she offered to cancel our order if we preferred. Half our table wanted to get up and leave; the others wanted to stay because we had invested so much time already. Once our server saw we were talking to the manager, she remembered our table and came over to see what the issue was. She was not happy. She blamed the kitchen being backed up. If that was the case, she should have come over to the table to say something, not leave us there for an hour with no word. And that excuse did not explain why other tables were being served their entrees before us. The entrees finally came, but they were not worth the wait, unfortunately. The haddock I had with seafood stuffing was dry. My friend didn't like her salad which had the dressing right on it whereas the waitress told her it would be served on the side. I think only one of the 7 of us enjoyed their meal. We asked for the check as soon as the entrees were finally delivered, because we didn't want to have to endure another disappearing act. We needn't have worried; suddenly the waitress was on us like white on rice, hovering over us as we signed the bill. She probably wanted to see if we stiffed her on the tip, which she certainly deserved. I wanted to give her only 10% but that would have been around $8.50 and I couldn't do it, even if the service was terrible. I left her $10; not sure what my friends gave. So be forewarned: The customer does not come first at this restaurant. Skip it. Try the better restaurant across the street, even if it has a longer announced wait. If we had just gone there, we probably would have eaten our meal at the same time. It couldn't have been any worse. read more

We had a fantastic experience at Cap'n Jacks! We happened upon them by chance, and are so pleased that we did. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that they had Newport Craft's "Rhode Rage" on draft. The cold appetizer platter was delicious, the clam cakes were some of the best we have ever had, and the broiled scallops were excellently cooked, as were the broccoli rabe and fingerling potatoes that accompanied them. Our waitress was attentive and engaging, and the view from the outdoor dining area was lovely. We will certainly be back! read more

What an awful experience in "trying" to eat here after a day at East Matunuck State Beach. Went on 8/8/16 to get dinner, ordered "Whole Belly" platter of claims for $20.00 and what came out was a lack-luster display of fried nothing. I actually counted the "whole belly's" where there were about 5 legitimate "whole belly's" on the platter. The rest of what was fried were what you would find at a cheap food truck at 2 a.m. on Eddie St. in Providence. I mentioned to the waitress that I was not eating the meal, paying $20.00 for about $4.37 worth of whole belly clams. She took the plate away, didn't say much and the manager never even came over to try and make amends. You would think someone at Cap'n Jack's would come out with a fresh, actual plate of $20.00 worth of whole belly clams.., nope. They could have cared less. The waitress didn't even come over to refill our empty water glasses. How many customers pay that amount for a half as_ portion of whole belly clam's dinner each day and do not say a thing? Secondly, your better off with processed, frozen fried whole belly clams's from Stop n Shop than what they try to serve you here for $20.00 a platter. And to mention, my significant other, she ordered clear chowder and 3 clam cakes. She mentioned that the clam cakes tasted as if the oil they were fried in was old, a burnt taste. Her Riesling wine was definitely a low grade wine as well. The $1.09 tip on her $19.91 bill spoke volumes to the crappy food and experience we had. Awful, awful, awful. As a native New Englander, I know and love seafood. I understand that this place sometimes gets crowded as I remember waiting for a table on weekend evenings when I was a kid. What I don't understand are the reviews knocking the food. Went for lunch recently and had the lazy man's lobster. Generous portion, tender meat, served with perfectly cooked and wonderfully seasoned potatoes plus a vegetable side. Girlfriend had the fish and chips which included a huge, tasty piece of haddock and crispy French fries. The tartar sauce was outstanding. Hush puppies (clam cakes) as an appetizer were amazing - crispy outside, soft inside, plenty of clam for my taste. Sit on one of the porches, as the views are great from back there. read more

I'd expect to get better seafood right on the water than I can get at home in the Jersey suburbs, but that's not what we found. Lunch time with family is always great. Today was my first time at this place and it was great! The seating was comfortable, and the waiter(s) and waitresses were very nice, and never had a problem. I was kind of amazed by how terrible this place was. Our poor server couldn't seem to get anything right. My littlenecks arrived drowning in a pool of melted ice -- no yummy briny clam juice for me! (I sent them back.) The server also managed to drip that clam-juice slush liquid all over my legs -- oh well! The soup came out cold, the salad came out warm and without dressing. Nobody wants a dry salad -- am I right? I ordered a bottle of wine and he just brought me a glass with some white creamy liquid dripping off the side -- possibly clam chowder? possibly...? The table wasn't set and the rollups never came. We had to get the settings for ourselves from another table. The food was middling and the server didn't seem to give a f***. Wish I could learn to give fewer f**ks and maybe I wouldn't be writing this right now! I heard from a local that the only thing worth getting here is the fish and chips. My family visited this restaurant on our way home from the beach, there were a total of 4 adults and 3 kids and we sat on the outdoor deck. We had to walk through the main dining room, which was dark, old, and had a funny smell too it. When the waitress came over she was not friendly and welcoming and did not tell us the specials. She took our drink order and even though all the umbrella's were advertising Sam Adams, they only had 1 kind. When the food came the kids were disappointed that the pasta they ordered was not spaghetti, but instead a swirly corkscrew type pasta. Three of us ordered the New England clam chowder and while I myself liked it, it was heavily flavored with bacon, which the others did not care for. The fish n chips was OK, nothing great, but the stuffies were very good. When the bill came we were quite surprised to see that the kid's lemonades were $2.85 EACH for a small 8oz plastic cup, the same price as an adult soda. Normally a kids drink is included with their meal or there is a small charge, but this was absolutely crazy. My family will not be going back and I would also not reccomend this restaurant. read more

Service was excellent. Our waitress was sweet and efficient. However, the food was substandard. The clam cakes did not have any clam bits. I did find one tiny clam bit in my chowder. Are clams scarce these days. I know it's a seafood place, but I ordered a salad with my clam cakes. The beet salad was very disappointing. The roasted beets (did not appear to be roasted) were cubes about the size of a sugar cube. The salad had 3 very small thin slivers of pear. Could you spare a slice of a pear? I have not been here in 10 years so when traveling north on Rt 1 thought it would be nice to visit and enjoy my memories. We had eaten here for years, and were there with a party of nine. One of the family members was served a quantity of food which did not match the amount that was listed on the menu. When we questioned the waitress, we were referred to the intoxicated manager (owner), who kicked out our family member, who was being civil , and just asking a question. Ruined our meal as we all had to leave (after paying our bill), and left such a bad taste that we will never be back. We had driven down to Matunuck to go to the Matunuck Oyster Bar but had a 2 hour wait so we decided to go to our old stand by, Captain Jacks. There was no wait on this Saturday night (which should have been a big red flag) Place looks the same as it did 30 years ago. Food was meh at best... Not worth the money at all. Sandy shellfish, overcooked, not much taste, mediocre service. For just a couple of dollars more I could have had a magnificent seafood dinner in Providence at Hemenways. We've been going to Captain Jacks for 15 years and are regulars each Summer going 6 or 7 times. The clam cakes, calamari, baked seafood platter, and fish and chips are among our favorites. Their chowder is the best we've had in RI and even the salads and steaks are great. The selection of homemade desserts is fantastic although we rarely indulge as the portions are so substantial we never have room. I wanted to bring my parents to the ocean for a seafood dinner. I've sampled the clam cakes last year before and they were very good. So I thought we would give them a try. Well, we ordered the calamari and the shrimp rings were big and tough. The batter did not even adhere to the rings. There were some smaller pieces that were tenderer. WORST ever. My father and I both ordered the fried clams. Also, the worst. They were not sweet tasting at all and tasted terrible. I only ate them because I was hungry. They were $23, not many, and not worth the price. My husband had the white chowder. He's had better. I will not return. read more
