If I could give this place zero stars, I would. Went there with my wife and two kids last night, after driving all day to get to our vacation rental across the street. It's a big place with a pub on one end, a family restaurant on the other, and a takeout place in the middle. We wound up in the pub because there was a wait at the restaurant end. The service was slow. The food was poorly cooked and utterly cheap. Soggy french fries. Clam chowder with .0001 clams in it, undercooked potatoes, and no detectable seasoning. "Clam cakes" that were just gobs of deep fried dough with barely any clams in them (see clam chowder). My kid's fried fish managed to be both bland and overcooked. In short: The food was terrible, but here is the best (worst) part. On our way out of there, I was crossing the street with my wife and two young daughters, when a guy pulled up in a white SUV and started ranting at me, accusing me of parking in his parking lot and then walking somewhere else. He swore and ranted at me in front of my children. (Later, I had to explain to them what "paranoid" means). It was rude, bizarre, and delusional. (We had walked to the restaurant. My car was parked at our vacation rental across the street). After my family walked away (I had to just disengage with the guy), a woman in a nearby house said "that's the owner." So if you love restaurants with terrible food and owners who curse out their patrons in front of their children, then Cap'n Jacks is the place for you!!! read more

Great nostalgic restaurant, but the food is okay. We started off with some chowda which was okay and then moved onto some clam cakes. The clam cakes were lacking enough clams to give it a proper RI clam cake taste. After the clam cakes we moved onto our fish and chips which were better than the other parts of the meal. There was a huge portion and it was perfectly fried. For dessert we had some cupcakes. My wife had the one that looked like a lobster. Once again, it looked great, but tasted average. All in all, you get a great view of the bay with decent food and a nostalgic feel. So if you are in the area, and are looking for some decent fish and chips, give this place a try. read more

Had lunch today with my boyfriend after spending the day at the beach. Arrived around 1:30 and sat outside. Patio was not full nor was the restaurant. The server was very nice and sweet. Drinks came out quick and were good. We ordered the tuna tacos as an appetizer. It took about 30 minutes for our app to come out. Our server informed us that the kitchen was backed up as a bus had come in however the bus wasn't there when we arrived. I had used the restroom to wash my hands and saw one staff member sitting on a stool having a very relaxed conversation with two others employees. Clearly all hands were not on deck to cater to this sudden rush. We ordered the tuna taco appetizer which stated that the tuna was supposed to be seared. The entire piece of fish was brown and cold. We returned it. The fish looked old and it certainly was not seared. Our meals came to about ten minutes later. I ordered the fish sandwich with cheese and returned that as a piece of hair was embedded in the cheese. My boyfriend was done with his meal before my replacement came out. His meal and mine were ok. Filled the belly but by no means delicious. I was shocked that a manager didn't come over to apologize for the slow service, returned appetizer and meal. All in all, service was incredibly slow, food overall was incredibly disappointing and it is clear that there isn't a care about customer satisfaction. We will not be back. read more

The wait at Matunuck Oyster bar was too long, so we decided to try out Cap'n Jacks down the road. Service was excellent and they have a great deal offering 3 clam cakes and chowder for $2 with an entree. The chowder was delicious. Great flavor and big clams inside. The clam cakes were ok. I've had better. The whole belly clams were the best I've ever had. BIG bellies! Absolutely delicious. My mom had the fish and chips. HUGE piece of fish. The fish was super fresh but the batter was off. Not the right taste. Wound up eating the fish and leaving the batter. Overall a little hit and miss but worth coming back. read more

Literally the worsy clam chowder ive had...id say out of 15 spoonfuls i had 1.5 clams...ugh!!!!

Sat in the indoor dining room. Menu limited almost exclusively to seafood. Extremely low quality food. The cream in the chowder was bad, you could see it separated and gave the chowder a very strange, gritty texture. Clam cakes were average at best. We had to wait for the calamari apart from our other appetizers only to get a plate of baby-sized, cold, tough squid rings. Horrible. One at our table ordered fish and chips, the batter was so soggy, it was just peeling off of the fish. Another ordered the fisherman's platter ($30 BTW!) and everything was undercooked, greasy, and incredible soggy. It was a horror show, sent it back. 2 ordered order the turkey club and subbed the turkey for chicken ($4 up charge per sandwich), asked for no herbal mayo, it came with it, very strong thyme flavor, they weren't a fan. Chicken was dry and absolutely flavorless, nothing was seasoned. Bacon was also blubbery. I had a burger that was actually decent. Though adding a piece of cheese (which it doesn't come with) and 2 strips of bacon made it $14. Bacon was tough. Everyone's fries sucked, they were below average, and unseasoned. When we told our waitress how everything was, all she could say was "sorry". There appears to be no management here or any form of customer service. The quality of everything here is bottom of the barrel, they charge good money, and take advantage of being near the water. I'd say their chefs should work fast food, but they apparently don't even know how to run a deep fryer. Sorry to leave such a roasting review, but it really was that bad. We are so glad we discovered this RI gem, in particular the Saltmarsh Pub & Raw Bar! We've visited it on our way to Theater by the Sea and the food is consistent, fresh and delicious. Crispy Fried Bang Bang Shrimp is outstanding! 4 jumbo shrimp with a light batter and the sriracha sauce is perfect with the small mixed greens that come with it. Whole Clam Roll with bellies was a perfect size and the grilled roll was still crisp. Fish Sandwich is fresh and lightly battered and crunchy. We decided to take home a blueberry filled turnover and it was light, fluffy and with the perfect amount of blueberry filling. read more

6/25/2023 visit - The food was virtually flavorless. The clam fritters were excellent but the chowder was way too milky. The fried seafood platter lacked flavor. I will say it had only a few French fries which is good because sometimes you pay for half a plate of fries. But the fish wasn't good. It just lacked that something you look forward to. The scallops were pretty good but again same batter. Maybe it was the batter lacking the pizazz. Also they don't offer a baked option which is healthier and tastes better in my opinion. We used to go here many years ago and it was excellent. I think the locals know why the oyster bar down the street is jam packed and this place has plenty of parking. I don't recommend. I was racing in Rhode Island and we decide to do some driving around in our RV - another cyclist st the Masters games had recommended the manatunk(sp?) oyster house down the road - we passed by and saw it was jammed with basically the loafer and tourist crowd, so we continued down the road and happened upon Captn Jacks - now we've toured as a band for many years and now our little gem of a rolling home takes us far and wide. Our experience always favor the underdog, the local watering hole, for when luck is on your side you'll get more out of the experience. The outside area next to the bar was empty,had large glass wall to isolate us from the wind and great views of the bay. The patio was large and expansive and nothing like the jammed and cramped looking patio of down the street. SCORE! We were looking for oysters they didn't disappoint - a couple local varieties, distinctly different in the tastes- our server was a cool local guy, laid back and knowledgeable - we ordered up a beer for myself and Adela got a prickly pear margarita - he warned her it was basically a glass of tequila (her favorite drink) After the oysters, we ordered up local fare, clam roll, lobster roll with some fresh Cole slaw - all great - Adela's clam roll won over my lobster - but they were both wonderfully satisfying. The place is old school, from the looks of the bar patio - it must be jammed at night, when I asked if they had live music, he said they had acoustic duos in the summer. Overall, we got a great meal, excellent drinks at a reasonable price. We're a fan - if you favor local flavor over the loafer and Lexus crowd, give the place a shot. read more

RIP Captain Jack's We moved seasonally to the area in 1995. We have a large family who LOVED going here for any reason. It was awesome. Everything has changed....the food is pitiful, nonexistent servers who know nothing, etc. The whole experience completely below suitable. My husband and I have wondered why instead of deteriorating so, why don't they try to be an alternative to the oyster bar? He is a retired marketing executive... As we permanently leave the area now, I hope the Piemonte family, who we grew to know, either returns to their former stature, or sells off. Right now, it is an embarrassment to your name. Beware if you are gluten-free. I had a lengthy conversation with my server about whether or not they have gluten-free buns to go with the lobster roll. They do not. I ordered fish tacos off the menu because tacos usually come with corn tortillas. Not of this restaurant! The server was clearly is clueless about what it means to be gluten-free and brought me my tacos. I took a bite and realize that they used wheat tortillas. This made me sick and I can't believe the stupidity of the waiter to not put two and two together when I came to gluten-free foods. In any case, I returned the fish tacos and left because there's not much on the menu beside salads if you are gluten-free. Some acknowledgement from the management would've been nice. read more

We came here for dinner after ad full day at the beach. We were a party of 8 and were pleasantly surprised after being told it would be a 60min wait, and we only waited 25min. There was some hesitation on my part coming here based in other reviews that the service was slow. Our waiter was super fast with drinks and appetizers! Yet 60+ minutes later our waiter came back and said sorry, but the kitchen lost your order slip. OMG! Could this have possible happened to me too?! Our waiter was very apologetic, yet not once did the kitchen, manager or owner come by to apologize. Sad, they all left the waiter out to dry :(. And when the check arrived, not an offer to make things right on our $200 bill. So we asked, and gave us some desert to go, Whoopee! As for dinner once it arrived; I'd rate as average. Fish and chips were average. Shrimp scampi was fair, lacked butter and wine sauce, and had to ask the kitchen for more sauce. Won't be coming back here! Sad, we spend our Summer's at RI beaches. At about 5:15 this evening I dropped off my family to Captains Jack as i parked our car. We chose the lounge area as we were coming from the beach. It was busy but no overflowing as they were already sitting down when i walked in. Waitress brought us menus and we ordered the following. Drinks first; 1 club soda, 1 bud light and 2 waters. The drinks came quickly. Then we ordered the following: Son: Steamers Daughter: Bowl of Chowder & Salad Wife Cup of chowder To be share by wife and I. 2 oysters 4 shrimp with cocktail sauce. and Steamers. 40 Minutes later I waved down our waitress and asked if they "ran out of food. : she said no that the were just very busy. (again no line to get in) I said the two tables behind us had already been served and they came in after. She said what they ordered was faster - one of them was fried clam cakes and I didnt know steamers were a long process. She brought us another round of drinks and told us she was not charging us for the one Beer. Another 20 minutes later she came and announced that in fact they had run out of food in this case steamers. And no one told her. Out came my daughters food and the shrimp and oysters and my wife's cup of chowder. She asked us if we wanted to order anything else we declined as we would have been eating in shifts. It was then i realized there were no napkins or silverware on the table and i had to go ask for some. Also the oysters were the smallest I have ever seen. Though she apologized, at no point did a manager come over and we got our bill for $38.93 and I paid in cash as i was afraid they would mess that up too if I used a card. I left an 18% tip because i always blame managers/owners for restaurant failures not the wait staff who was hired by them. So that will be our last trip to Cap'n Jacks in Wakefield. read more

I've been coming here for years. Always enjoyed the reasonable prices and good food. My husband and I, went for lunch on Sunday. Couldn't believe how high the prices were. Baked haddock was 29 dollars and a fried seafood platter was 55 dollars !!! I know things have gone up since Covid, but really, 55 dollars for a fried seafood platter. I think not. My son and I stopped here for a quick snack and a Narragansett Shandy on tap. He order a Lobster Bisque and I chose a RI Chowda. My Chowda was okay, not great and my son liked his bisque, it too was okay but we both agreed we have had better. The view from the new Pub and Raw Bar is great, just what you would expect from a side restaurant. Sitting next to me was a lady who had graduated Johnson and Wales and was the current Pastry Chef at the Cap'n's and had worked there for 35 years. We chatted about the biz for sometime until her break was over and she had to return to the kitchen. She stopped us in the parking lot and gave us a fancy creme cheese cupcake and large peanut butter brownie cookie. We dined in the bar area on a Sunday afternoon. It was a great lunch. I had the Thai Seafood which at first I thought it was a bit small for a main dish but it filled me up. The lobster bisque was very creamy and tasty although I didn't not see any lobster chunks as I normally prefer (but then again maybe my daughter ate it all). My mother had the lobster cocktail and she enjoyed every bite. My honey had the sunday special of 1 lb of wings and a glass of beer (some specific one) and the Oyster Sampler special of the day. Overall we had great service for Sunday football afternoon (2 pm) and the crowd was welcoming and not loud... Can you believe it?!! (we had lunch with our 4 year old). Had an awesome time. We walked to this restaurant from East Matunuck State Beach (about 1/2 mile). Had beers and salad outside on the patio with a breath taking view. We saw people either clam or oyster digging! Ended with an eclair which was ridiculously huge. Share it with a family... Don't get it for yourself. The kitchen must have rushed because my scallops were under cooked when they finally came out. Didn't even try the rest of the sides and rushed through my scallops because the rest of my party was ready to leave, my son fell asleep and I was holding people up. Terrible dining experience. Oh, and initially we were seated outside and the mosquitoes were horrific so we moved inside. So disappointed. I wish I could defend the restaurant but they weren't even that busy. Service was good. The food is just grease & butter. If it's not fried, it's heavy cream or butter based sauces. Too heavy for our tastes. Also the crowd there is a bunch of grumpy old people. What a great restaurant I've been introduced to here in the Matunuck area! I think it was mentioned previously in another review but yes this is right across the way from Matunuck Oyster Bar which is always always packed. It's so packed that it prevents me from actually parking by this restaurant. But hey, I will skip right by this busy place where I may not ever see food and drive right down to this little (not really... actually it's quite big) great restaurant. Now I'm from California and I just recently discovered these things called Clam Cakes? Apparently they're a Rhode Island delicacy. Why is fried dough so awesome? I don't really have an answer to that but I can say that clam cakes are exceptionally mind blowing because there is shellfish all over these balls of heaven Before I get to the main course, you have to make sure you save room for dessert. I'll get to why later! They have all your great fried seafoods here with my favorite being the whole clam bellies. There are also clam strips, fish and chips, butterfly shrimp, etc. They actually taste fresh rather than something they pulled out of the freezer. They have other great non fried dishes that I would have been equally excited to have for dinner but I was looking for something unhealthy that night =) Ok, so what was I talking about earlier? Oh yes, the desserts here are quite spectacular! You would never have guessed that this place had a great bakery as well. You must order their cheesecake! It'll by far be the best cheesecake you've had around. They have 3 flavors that change. My boyfriend and I were thoroughly unimpressed with eating here. The two biggest complaints were that our waiter was miserable, not knowledgable about the menu, and not very attentive (the couple behind us wasn't addressed for almost 20 minutes and had to ask for a server!) and the food was extremely sub par. We ordered calamari which was bland, shrimp scampi which was way too loaded with wine, and shrimp Alfredo which tasted like boxed Alfredo sauce. Portions were also quite small for entrees that were $16-18. The only good thing we ate here was the clam chowder. We sat outside and the view was lovely, but that was about it for positive reviews. Cap'n Jacks had a private function going on in their main dining area this evening. They ushered us to their takeout side that has both indoor and outdoor dining. The meal took nearly 45 minutes to get and the food was average at best, hope this was was just an abnormally. Will give them a second chance on past experiences. Cap'n Jacks is good for what it does. It is typical New England seafood faire, without any frills. Many people will try to unfairly compare it to Matunuck Oyster Bar down the street, but honestly that is apples and oranges. MOB is honestly a five star restaurant whereas Jack's is more around a 3. Jack's hasn't updated the interior of the restaurant in years, but honestly for what you are looking for here, there is really no need to. Now what Jack's does great is the desserts. They don't advertise them too much until you walk in and gaze into the dessert case to your left. Trust me, anything out of that case is one of the best things you have had. In terms of RI desserts, Jack's is close to Wright's Dairy Farm (Note: I said close Rhode Islanders..jeeze). If you are looking for chowder and some clam cakes, head on over to Jack's and you won't be disappointed. If you are looking for ambiance, top class food and a great eating experience, then I suggest heading to Matunuck Oyster Bar if you can get a seat. read more

This is a great restaurant! My friend raved that this place has the best clam cakes ever! They were absolutely delicious and you can certainly see the pieces of clams inside. There are cooked perfectly! Also, we ordered the lobster roll which I thought was delicious and it was not drenched in mayo, which is good! My friend thought the portion size was a little small but to me it made it easy to eat! We also got the fish tacos and they were delicious! This place also does 2 entrees and a bottle of wine for $39 which is a great deal! Only negative was that they weren't able to make me a cappuccino as they ran out, but I easily had a coffee instead. Took my grandmother out for chowder here the other day and I have to say it was really disappointing. I've been here before, years ago, and I remember it being much better. The chowder was thin, heavy on the potatoes, and light on the clams. The flavor wasn't all too bad, but even Snow's canned chowder is better. Clamcakes were good, fried clam strips way too thin & crispy (in a "is there actually clam meat in here?" kind of way), and the lobster roll was flavorless. Pretty sure it was just meat and plain mayo, and I think a little celery or lemon would go a long way. (And butter on the roll, of course!) It's just a typical casual RI seafood restaurant, so I don't know how they could make everything so blah. On the upside, the service was good...friendly and prompt. However, with such crappy chowder on the menu, I definitely won't be going back. I'll head over to Aunt Carrie's or George's for my next clamcakes and chowder fix. read more

We called and called for reservations (which they don't do, fair) or an estimate wait time, but no one picked up. We arrived at the sleepiest restaurant with a 90 minute wait... and a snooty waiter with a condescending smile who just kept repeating there was a 90 minute wait. This place used to be our favorite restaurant for seafood out here on the east coast but they dropped the ball. We have eaten here many many times and unfortunately, after my lobster meal over the weekend, I got really sick. Both my partner and I ordered a whole lobster-- each and while consuming the lobster at the time, all seemed well. However, the aftermath was very uncomfortable and disturbing. I am very reasonable but when my son's hotdog came out burnt and he couldn't eat most of it, I had enough! No apology and the waitress never checked to see if we needed anything.
