We had 11 people 6 adults and 5 children. As soon as we walked in we were told they will not seat a party of 11. There was plenty of room but - No Go. I don't think it was a COVID reason actually I have no idea why they refused to seat us. It was the owner who told us to leave and she was very rude I was in shock. Cap'n Jacks is a big fave of ours. We are local and go frequently. IMO they don't pretend to be anything other than what they are - a casual, low-key, non-trendy pub and restaurant in an unbelievably great setting. They do a few things reliably well- hamburgers, pizza, baked fish, fish and chips and linguini and clam sauce tend to be our staples. I personally think that their fish and chips is not equalled by anyone else anywhere- giant portions of fresh haddock perfectly battered and fried. When we have out of town company, their first demand is usually CJ's fish and chips. They also pour an incredible cocktail - with sidecars, people! When's the last time anyone saw that? Service is not white glove "today the chef has prepared for you, yada yada" but who expects that in this setting? They also have an incredible pastry and dessert chef. If you have never heard of or tried that old New England disappearing classic Grapenut Pudding you owe it to yourself to try theirs. And the pies are unbelievable. I read some of these reviews and just shake my head. Who can be astonished that they want their parking lot used for their business and not for beachgoers or people trying to escape valet fees elsewhere - quelle surprise! Cap'n Jacks is what it is, and what it is is pretty damn good in my opinion. I debated about writing this review because secretly I love that we can usually get a table, and I would hate to screw that up if suddenly hordes of people discovered what an overlooked gem this place is. I love Cap'n Jack's for many reasons. It is the best of summer memories. The view is fantastic. The desserts are legendary. It's a little drive from our favorite beach in Galilee, despite being right across the channel. It's worth the ride. After a late afternoon of sun and fun at (and in) the ocean, I trekked over with my grandson recently. We sat in the outdoor patio, overlooking the salt marsh, complete with long-legged snowy white egrets. In the distance, we could see the masts of the boats docked at Galilee and see the Block Island ferries coming and going. There was a thick hedge of blooming rose bushes lining the property at water's edge. Now, for the food! I had a hankering for fried whole belly clams. I started with a cup of lobster bisque that was quite good. The portion of fried clams was somewhat stingy (a dilemma not uncommon at many restaurants) but they were absolutely delicious. My grandson ordered his usual seaside meal of white clam chowder, clam cakes and French fries. To make up for the lack of clams, I indulged in dipping one of his clam cakes into his chowder (all for the sake of research, dear readers!) Both were very tasty with plenty of chopped clams. Ate here twice while visiting the shoreline last week. I had fish and chips once and a poke bowl the second time. Both were delicious. Beer batter on the fish was perfect and the helping was huge. I managed to eat it all. Fries were equally yummy and consumed. The poke bowl was fabulous. The ahi tuna was "practically swimming" which is what I had requested and the mix of salad ingredients complimented the fish perfectly. Not a speck left My husband had fried whole clams and fries both times. That's because whole clams fried perfectly are too much of a treat for him to not eat twice. He shared 1 clam once.... This is a review of Salt Marsh Pub, part of Cap'n Jack's restaurant. We have eaten here two weeks in a row. Great friendly attentive service, even on a busy night. Outside tables or at the bar the waitress and bartenders were great. Delicious PB mudslide, Dover sole special and the Fish and chips special were delicious. Fish had a light batter so you could really taste the fish. Chowder was tasty and full of clams. Swordfish was cooked perfectly and a good size piece unlike other restaurants. Decided to try Capt Jacks when the wait at Matunuck Oyster Bar was much to long and we were hungry. Have gone here sporadically through the years and it is usually just ok. Well it is still just ok, same beautiful view and attentive service but the food is nothing special. The table had chowder and clam cakes which were fine although the chowder could of been hotter. The calamari was standard and a bit tasteless. I sampled the baked haddock and it was my favorite item of the night. Linguine with clams was watery and bland. If the wait for Matunuck Oyster Bar which is across the street isn't to bad the two places cannot be compared. Prices were average except for a fried seafood platter which was very expensive but I didn't try it. read more

The staff were friendly (especially Ramone!!) and prompt. The space was clean when pleasant-open and airy. The oysters were delicious! Iceberg wedge salad was the best I have ever had. Can Yelp please offer a -1 Star? I am a local SK resident who has gone to this restaurant a few times. I have also watched a game or two at the tavern next door. We have also tried to entertain family and friends who visit from out of town. Just this week, we had a table for 8. The food was just "ok". The service was slow and our waiter was on "up sell overload". He basically tried to force us to buy appetizers and drinks to run up the bill. Two of us ordered "stuffies" and he said that we should all get them proclaiming "stuffies for the table". While we were ordering main dishes, He was very clear on what dishes to order and those we shouldn't ) all the higher cost dishes. Frankly speaking, most of us at the table found him extremely annoying! There are so many better restaurants than this place. Disappointed in our dinner this evening. We tried it as an alternative to Matunuck Oyster Bar which is across the street. Although the raw oysters were very good, the fried calamari was not. Calamari was clearly frozen (not a single tentacle included in order) and we were charged extra for marinara sauce but were never given the option to order the sauce. Who charges extra for sauce with calamari? Entrees were lackluster. The shrimp in scampi were frozen and the garlic was burned. Haddock was ordered and the bill indicated it was scrod. Both corn and potato accompanying haddock/scrod (?) we're both old. Not a great experience at all. Arrived in the middle of my beach day. Super hot day so wanted a frozen drink which was clearly advertised on the menu. Waited about 15 minutes for our server to come over and take our drink orders. All the whole, guests who arrived far after us got their drink orders taken and brought to them while we were waiting. I was told no frozen drinks as someone forgot to turn on the machine so it would be a 45 minute wait. Already annoyed, I ordered a corona lite to be Tpke they don't have corona in stock. I ultimately ordered a Long Island with an absolutely horrible taste. What a waste of 10 bucks. Server was extremely rude and finally took our order almost a half hour later. Yesterday, my sister & I enjoyed your delicious seafood along with a great Cap'n Jack's Bloody Mary. We each ordered the scallops entree, one broiled, & one fried. Our server Nate was horrible he never refilled our drinks he never came back with our serving dishes I had to get up and get them myself as well condiments and silverware were dirty had to clean it myself. I like the Salt Marsh cafe part of Cap'n Jack's. It looks out over the salt marsh, lovely view from the bar. They have an amazing fish and chips special during the winter. This restaurant does not take allergies seriously. I informed my server of my gluten allergy, and ordered a chicken cesar salad with NO croutons. My server brought out my salad with croutons, once he realized this he brings it back to the kitchen. My server returned with my "crouton-less" salad which ended up having small pieces of croutons within my salad. The Chef was aware of the allergy and still proceeded to just pick the croutons off the first salad and send it back out. I am severely allergic to gluten and the chefs carelessness has resulted in me having an allergic reaction. This restaurant has fallen down so hard it's just sad. Despite the flourishing Oyster Matunuck bar next door, where tons of people go and wait for hours, this place is never filled or busy. What does that tell you? I can tell you why- totally old inside and needs refurbishing. It smells damp. The servers don't seem to care unless they think you are a large party and they will be getting a good tip. Menu seemed ok, I heard the son (Chef) was from the CIA and do had brought in some items like butternut squash etc. Chowder was watery and tasteless and cool (blechhh). Clam cakes were large, oily and had 1 - small pieces of clam ins each one. Fish and chips- fish was very "fishy" tasting- something we had no desire to see again.. One had a chicken pesto wrap and it was all dried out chicken and the sauce was dripping everywhere. I opted for a hamburger which was ok, but it's a seafood restaurant. They had odd looking desserts- I finally figured out one was a "lobster shaped " cookie. we went for lunch and got there at noon. There was one other group of 4 there and by the time we left it was 1/3 full. Meanwhile the oyster bar had people backed up for miles. I 've been to the oyster bar a few times and its fresh and clean but pricey. But I expected that from the fresh oysters and clientele. Here they seem to be resting on 20 year old laurels. No marketing, no sales, no personality in the staff. Just another restaurant waiting for tourists, serving them mediocre food and then leaving the state. Ask a local is they go to Cap'n Jacks these days - No - Is usually the answer. I am now one of those people. It's sad because they used to be so good and now they just don't seem to care. They are very different actually but because they are close (& there isn't anything else here) I thought I would mention it. It's hit & miss here. Highlights: super perfect beer batter cod fish & chips. Amazing tender & tasty clam cakes, the Stuffies had a fair amount of seafood & spice. The Fisherman's platter is excellent. They certainly don't skimp out- totally enough to share. Very fresh, good crunch, not oily, tender scallops, huge cod. Surprisingly the chicken parm was great. Tender cutlet, tangy sauce. Avoid: clam chowder is like lukewarm watery potato soup. No lobster or richness to the lobster bisque. Steak was sent back- over cooked, no cheddar bacon fondu sauce as the menu said. The ice burg wedge salad lacked pizzaz - dressing was scarce & it was comber some to eat. Service is pleasant. The kitchen has issues. Soups came out after our entrees, dishes did not come out as described on the menu, steak was not cooked med as ordered. I was really surprised when Mom and I ate here recently. The last time I'd eaten here it was standard Rhode Island tourist fare. We had lunch here a couple of times and boy were we surprised! I ordered the lunch fish and chips. I got a cup of chowder, 3 clam cakes, an HUGE portion of batter fried fish, a large amount of fries and a nice cup of coleslaw for under $11.00. It was *delicious*. Mom got a BLT nicely filled with bacon. We've also had the tuna melt (comfort food.) One thing that I don't remember that made me squeel like a child was the lobster cupcake that greeted me at the bakery case! Stopped in after a long day on the water. It was my first time here and being a "beach restaurant" I had low expectations. I was however pleasantly surprised! The wait staff was very attentive. I've been coming here since I was a kid and don't know why I keep returning. Maybe because we didn't want to wait across the way at Matunuck Oyster Bar especially have 2 young kids with us. We were taken out back on the outdoor patio only to be seated at high round that was so warped it wasn't even flat with 2 small kids...so swing as that was the last table they offered we sit at the pub side patio. I was pleasantly surprised it was a nice bar area and patio. It's about time they update and try to keep up with the competition! Now the table was sandy/dirty never washed off for us. The bartender/waitress asked for a drink order. We asked for water with lemons, no lemons. Placed an app order and entrees. Only to wait forever and she said she put the kids order in first?? Why? We never asked. And I asked for 1/2 dozen clam cakes as an app and a cup of chowder. The kids ate theirs and were done by the time I got mine which was 3 clam cakes and a bowl of chowder which I never ordered... the chowder was broken, no flavor, no clams... it was horrible and the clam cakes were soggy. My husband still hadn't gotten his clam plate. Asked for check had to wait for it, so overall save your time and money and go across the street! Although the food was good, our waitress was obviously new and inexperienced which in and of itself is not a problem. She didn't know the menu or what sides came with the lobster dinner, which I would assume is a popular meal. She then proceeded to drop two of the three cocktails we ordered down my back. While placing the third surviving drink on the table she knocked it over, going all over our table which , poured onto my lap. As she tried to pick up the drink on the table, she proceeded to pour the remaining liquid from the tray on me. Although she was slightly apologetic, we never saw and manager and were charged full price for our cocktails. Accident happen, I but it only seems appropriate for management to have comped at least one round of our drinks. Needless to say we will not be back.
