I've been eating at Capt Benny's restaurants around Houston since the early 1980s . The food is always amazing , always fresh and delicious . I've been eating at the Murphy Road location for over 20 years ! Great oysters on half shell or fried ! Great fried catfish, the whole catfish is best in my opinion ! Great Gumbo ! Capt. Benny's is exactly what I needed here at the end of October. A friend I meet for lunch occasionally suggested coming here and I'm glad I did. I checked out the menu in advance and decided on a Dozen Oysters to start, then the Six Fried Shrimp. Oh, boy, what a great lunch. The oysters were large, plump, cold and delicious. Fresh as fresh can be. The shrimp were another meal all to themselves. Large, corn meal batter fried shrimp with French fries, cole slaw AND hushpuppies! OMG, I haven't had hushpuppies in years. Because I have tried to avoid fried foods in recent years, Capt. Benny's was not on my go-to lunch list, but I must make an exception on the maxim of "everything in moderation, including moderation." Service is spot on! Seafood gumbo- some of the best in the area. I have seen the restaurant grow from a make shift shrimp Boat to a full restaurant with a beautiful outdoor seating area. The only reason Captain Bennys is not getting 5 stars- pricing. Too expensive for the area. Being as close as they are to the gulf, prices should be cheaper. My wife shared her cup of seafood gumbo and I was happy 'cause it was some of the best we've had. I enjoyed an eight piece shrimp basket with fries, hush puppies and garlic bread. The fried shrimp were battered with cornmeal,usually not my favorite but these were very good, the fries were average. My wife enjoyed and overshared the popcorn shrimp appetizer. Between the two of us we finished everything. The popcorn shrimp batter was not cornmeal. We ate on the outside deck. This location only has bar seating with high stools on the inside. We'll be back. I had came down for a Houston Texans game and wanted some seafood and Captain Benny's was not far from the stadium. I got the fried calamari, which was excellent excellent a fillet of catfish and oysters that were the size of my palm, they were so fresh and sweet. I could not believe how great they tasted it, but the topper to me was the coleslaw. I really really enjoyed it. I live up in North Dallas and the oysters are nowhere as big as the ones there at Captain Benny's and maybe it's because Houston is a little closer to the golf. However, I would recommend Captain Benny's. They were a little crowded, but the service was not bad specially as good as the food was and the ambience was like game day, even though the game was over. Decided to give this place a try and I'm glad I did. Forgot to take pictures of the oyster both raw and baked. All the food was fresh and came with lots of flavor. Not one complaint about anything that was delivered to the table. Not many places can fry scallops and still be as juicy as theirs was. While the place is small for groups, please be patience while eating here. The service is as good as it gets and when I say the young lady work 10/21/2023 around 7pm, she kept a smile on her face even when handling all the tables by herself. She had back up with delivering food and drinks, but she was the one taking orders and keeping tabs on the tables. She did an amazing job and deserves huge appreciations. Of course appreciations to the kitchen and the rest of the staff at this establishment. Thank you for the wonderful experience and we will sure to be back. read more

Trying Capt Tom's competition, Capt Benny's! Not bad, but pricey. Bigger selection of options than Capt Tom's If you buy a dozen, all you get is a dozen. Capt Tom's raw or fried oysters you always get way more for a cheaper price. When they are small Tom's may give you 14 to 16 oysters raw or fried! It's a nice place and I like the outside eating area. A dozen oysters was about $5 higher per dozen at Benny's and I get more than a dozen at Tom's! Winner, hands down Tom's! read more

Normally I love this place, but tonight we showed up 9 people total, ready to eat and drink but the mood quickly was ruined, the hostess or manager not sure who she was, didn't even try to accommodate us in any way, we asked if we can pull a couple of tables toguether to what she said that was not possible. I know they may have their rules or what not, but what's not cool is that she's didn't even try to accommodate us. Didn't tell us to wait, or give us a few let me see what we can do, etc. it was super awkward as if we were there begging for free food. Btw there was tables open and the largest table in the place (10 chairs) with only 3 people sitting.... Super dissatisfied. It sucks because we normally love it here and frequently come. By far, they had the worst gumbo I have had in years. In fact, I could not eat the entire bowl. I simply gave up. Everything was overcooked. The shrimp had the consistency of clumped rice. The seasoning was bland, the seafood tasted over cooked (dry and rubbery) and the fish filets were pretty much nonexistent. The filets were entirely too thin. All you can taste was grease and cornmeal, no fish. Definitely not going back. It's as if they're a knockoff of Captain Toms which has both fresh, thick, and well seasoned filets. I love Captain Benny's! I've been going for years and they are consistently good. I have never been disappointed with food or service. I almost always order the same thing - a dozen oysters, cup of gumbo, and the Captain's Platter. I believe it consisted of the following fried items: shrimp, crawfish, scallops, catfish, stuffed crab, hushpuppies, french fries, and garlic bread... come on... that's ridiculous! Everything is delicious and they show great hospitality here. The oysters are addicting and I've never had a bad one. The gumbo is... gumbo, nothing to brag about but I get one every time because it's comforting and affordable. I also like that they switch up their specials every so often. If there's one that sounds really good like fried flounder, or something snazzy, I try it out and it's always good. Just try the place out. Well, they always give you 13. Sizes are pretty big and they're fresh. This is basically what we come here for. Seafood gumbo cup now $5.50. Tasty, always a little on the salty side, but that doesn't stop my hubby from always ordering this. Jumbo combination basket $11.99. This may be a new item (bigger size basket). Comes with 3 fried catfish, 6 fried shrimp, 2 hushpuppies (don't really care for), garlic bread (eh), and fries. Everything is fried well, not too thick of a batter, and not greasy. Their tartar sauce is so good. It's usually quite busy here and may be hard to find parking or a seat during rush hours. Probably will take awhile for your food (even at 245pm on a Sunday), but the servers are nice and you can see they're working as fast as they can.
