Well, they always give you 13. Sizes are pretty big and they're fresh. This is basically what we come here for. Seafood gumbo cup now $5.50. Tasty, always a little on the salty side, but that doesn't stop my hubby from always ordering this. Jumbo combination basket $11.99. This may be a new item (bigger size basket). Comes with 3 fried catfish, 6 fried shrimp, 2 hushpuppies (don't really care for), garlic bread (eh), and fries. Everything is fried well, not too thick of a batter, and not greasy. Their tartar sauce is so good. It's usually quite busy here and may be hard to find parking or a seat during rush hours. Probably will take awhile for your food (even at 245pm on a Sunday), but the servers are nice and you can see they're working as fast as they can. Captain Benny's Half Shell Oyster Bar has several locations around town and this was my first time visiting their Stafford restaurant. Unlike the Benny's I've visited on the north side of town, this location also had a patio with a nice tropical theme. The parking lot has 20-30 spots, give or take, but I didn't have any issues finding a spot at 2 PM on a Tuesday. Benny's has a cool theme and they do it well. The restaurant is shaped like a boat. There's a long bar with seating as well as stools along the wall. While the theme is cool, logistically it creates a mess during peak hours as the walkway between the bar and seating is really narrow. To give you a mental picture, the restaurant is shaped like a "U". We ended up sitting on the patio. They have a happy hour with $0.50 off beers and micheladas. Benny's is known for their seafood, specifically their oysters and fried shrimp. I got their six-piece fried shrimp platter which comes with fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw, and garlic bread. A good amount of food and hands down some of the best fried shrimp I've ever had. The selection doesn't end there with lots of additional Cajun/seafood options. Benny's is casual but it's quality seafood and much more affordable compared to upscale seafood restaurants around town. read more

My family and I have been a fan of Captain Benny's ever since I was in diapers. I have early memories of me sitting on the bar stool, feet not quite at the floor. Even when my Dad comes back to visit from Vietnam (where he retired), this place is always on the list. And when my Dad isn't in town, I go with my brother. We get the same thing everytime. Consistency is sweet. We start off with a cup of **gumbo** and throw in a handful of dashes of tabasco and a crumbled cracker. The gumbo is thinner than most places, so don't expect it to have a fatty base. Yet it is more savory and quite chunky. We then move onto a dozen **oysters** each, which they shuck and spray with water. The oysters are always fresh and slightly briny. I mix together the horseradish and cocktail sauce and we're good to go. We generally share the **fried oysters** or the **fried catfish filet**. I am partial to the fried oysters, my brother adores the fired catfish. Both are covered in a cornmeal concoction and fried to a crunch. read more

This place is ok. Parking is a pain and we're pretty sure someone hit my husband's truck since there was a huge scratch on the side when we were leaving. There is not much seating inside so we had to sit outside. Luckily that day had a decent breeze. however the tables aren't one piece, so the drink's condensation dripped down onto my legs. My plate tasted pretty good. Tilapia filet with rice (I didn't eat the coleslaw). My husband said he liked his raw oysters and broiled platter. One thing that really annoyed me was that the table next to us must have had friends of the waitress because she was talking to them a lot. I love the venue of this place. Indoors is all bar seating, one row overlooking the chefs shucking the oysters, and the other row facing the windows outside. The oysters are delicious. I could eat them all day. This last time, we split the raw oysters, baked oysters, calamari and seafood gumbo. All very very good choices. I had the stuffed tilapia fillet which was delicious, I especially loved the coleslaw. Definitely try the michelado with your food. Adds a good spice/kick to everything~ read more

I have been on a seafood jag for weeks now and have made it my life's mission to keep these Southwest Houston seafood restaurants honest on what they are putting out as oysters on the half shell. Today it was Captain Benny's turn. Market price today was $11.99 and worth every penny as the oysters were big bodacious body builder bivalves. I absolutely hate it when I get an oyster that is the size of a quarter on the shell. Benny's did not do that. I especially like that they shuck them right in front of you. The seafood gumbo was great too. I also like the fact that they also sell oysters by the half dozen because I can munch 18 but 24 is pushing it for me. So there it is, peeps. This location really disappointed us. I was pretty excited to try my girlfriend's favorite seafood place until we got here. Our waitress was pretty nice but she did not do her job right. We ordered fried calamari, jalapeño boudin, boiled crab fingers, and crawfish étouffée. The waitress actually did a recap on what we want and she decided not to write them down.. She brought out fried crab fingers and it was supposed to be boiled. We said we didn't order fried and she had a surprise look on her. She apologized and brought it back to the kitchen. Minutes later she came out and made up a story where she brought our boiled crab fingers to the first table and they ate it. I asked her about our boudin and crawfish étouffée and she also had an impression where she forgot to place our orders to the kitchen. We had to wait an additional 15 mins for the boiled ones to come out and 10 additional mins for the boudin. On the other hand, the people that came after us had all of their orders brought to their tables. Once the boiled crab fingers got to us, it was dry and didn't taste like we use to. At this point we're aggravated because we were still hungry. I told a different waiter to take boiled crab fingers off our tab and don't bring the crawfish étouffée because they were taking forever. The food is good but our service was unacceptable. Calamari has the right crunchiness texture and was very fresh. The Jalapeños boudin was spicy and yummy too. Too bad for the service. The food here is amazing however their customer service sucks! I ordered our regular there tonight (12 stuffed jalapeños) only to come home and find out they gave me 12 shrimp diablos. I called them and explained and the manager said "do you want to come get them tonight or....?" I told her that was my dinner so yes. When my Husband went to go pick up the correct order the manager informed him that it was my fault and I had ordered them wrong!!! I will miss their food but not the horrible customer service!!!! I ordered the whole catfish with 6 friend shrimp, with french fries and cole slaw. It cost me $27 and some change. When I got home and opened the box, the catfish was split on each side of the spine and then fried. The catfish fillet was about 1/4 of and inch thick and way overcooked. I picked off all the catfish off the bones and had about 1 cup of dry, oily catfish. The shrimp were ok but thin as well. The shrimp sauce was almost dried out and a funny color. I guess it had been in the fridge for quite some time. I didn't eat it. I have some at home. The cole slaw was good. No complaints there. I would have gotten better value for my money by getting a fish sandwich from Burger King for less than 1/3 the cost. I do NOT reccommend you take your date here or any potential business accosiate. But no, they wait until we ordered our drinks and gumbo then start telling us they are out of oysters...on a weekend night. Second, believe it when others say they are overpriced. They ARE overpriced. $8 for a bowl of gumbo when it is $5 at another famous oyster bar that also shapes like a boat. $12 for crab fingers app that is only half portion of that other oyster bar with the same boat shape. Everything else is also equally overpriced. Third, the food wasn't good... Soft and luke warm fries, kinda slimy tasting fish, and slightly burned hush puppies await. You will get your money worth at another oyster bar that also shapes like a boat in Katy, Cypress, and East Houston. Just avoid this place. Sure it's a bit worn down inside with that old yet fitting feel, sure it's small and full of wobbly legged seats inside with windows that let the sunshine in to blind and boil you but...Captain Benny's knows how to fry seafood and that is what's important here. When you come to Captain Benny's, come for the oysters. Oysters are the star here and well they should be since this is a half shell oyster bar. The fried oysters are what stands out to me. So crispy and full of flavor that only a fat oyster can have defines the oysters here. Not an oyster fan? No problem. Captain Benny's has shrimp, catfish, soft shelved crab (when in season) and other seafood items to choose from. If you're not a fan of fried foods the menu does offer grilled as a choice. We ordered the oysters, catfish and shrimp. Sides were hush puppies, fries, garlic bread and cole slaw. The oysters of course were excellent. The catfish was very good and a favorite of mine. The plump and crisply fried shrimp didn't disappoint. The fries and hush puppies were fried perfectly while the garlic bread had that wonderful buttery-garlicky taste. I don't like cole slaw myself but was assured it was creamy and fresh tasting. The service was prompt, friendly and attentive. The place is clean but does have an aged look about it that isn't unpleasant at all. It actually does fit in with the theme of an old shrimping boat. The restaurant itself is in the shape of an old boat. The only thing I wasn't fond of here was the wide windows which let an immense amount of afternoon sun in. It's smallish inside and if you end up sitting in the window area on a sunny day the sun can be a bit much as far as brightness and heat. If you want a miller light and some fried alligator, this is your place. The boudin was ok, the catfish was not, the fried alligator was good, the etufee was not. We sat outside because of the stench inside. Maybe the waitress was having a bad day but there was not a single item that wasn't thrown on the table. When it was time to pay we stood in line for 15 minutes at the register. The girl working the register was nice enough but had to keep giving up her spot to waiters getting change and entering orders. If you simply must eat in the area, go to one of the mexican establishments within walking distance. I will not be going back. read more

What can I say...this place has been great since it was on the corner of Wilcrest and the SWFY. Back in the day when Tom, now of Tom's Boat fame ran it with old Booker helping out. The gumbo is great, the fried shrimp are some of the best around and the oysters on the half shell are never a miss. Tip your bartender - server and there will be more than a dozen on the platter.
