Recently visited Captains Diner for breakfast. A lot of people have been talking about it on the island, so we wanted to try it. We have tried to visit a couple of times before, but we like breakfast, they only serve breakfast till 11, even on Sunday where they close at 2 pm anyway. Not real sure the rational to not cook breakfast/brunch till you close, but they were very adamant about it. Service was ok, but we had to ask for the bacon, biscuit, and toast that we asked for as sides, after our meal was brought. Bacon was definitely cooked in old bacon grease, had that old burnt bacon taste to it. Toast was burnt on one side, pretty bad. Asked for grape jelly, said they don't have grape, only mixed fruit. Eggs were cooked perfectly, asked for soft scrambled. Love crispy hash browns, but not this crisp. I hope they get it together. It's very nice inside. But $12 for a waffle with strawberries, and it's tough is not going to work. Then got the check for three including a 7 year old, no kids menu, $61 dollars for breakfast. There are other good options on the island. I really hope they make it work. More options on the island is great for us all. read more

First time here, really liked it! Very bright and clean inside, and such a friendly greeting when we walked in. Got an order of peel and eat shrimp to start, then the stuffed flounder, huge plate, lots of food and it was delicious. Had enough for leftovers! This place deserves their rating unlike some other places we tried on the island. The food was fresh and delicious. They make several of their sauces and ingredients from scratch which we appreciate and it comes through in the flavors. Homemade ranch was delicious. We ordered stuff flounder (really good-recommended by the server), ABC chicken sandwich (delicious and generous on the avocado and proteins), Alfredo chicken, salmon, and potato skins. Everything was really good and our server Leticia who goes by "T" was amazing. She was attentive, had a great personality, and impeccable memory. She was busy with multiple tables and still remembered something easy to forget like a side of ranch to go. She is ON IT. She was knowledgeable about the menu as well. Lastly, it was clean and seemed recently renovated or updated. The decor matches throughout and stays true to their theme. We would go back if we returned to this area in particular. Don't miss this spot! I hate to post such a great review because I know this place will be so busy!! But let's first start with Gabby...she's amazing! The pride she boasted about her restaurant was inspiring! In fact all the wait staff were so friendly and worked together so well! The food, ah-mazing!! Shrimp, calamari, flounder, shrimp bisque, chicken fried steak, we enjoyed it all. And the Caesar salad with in house dressing....yum! My family of 6 had a lovely dinner here. It was super busy, spring break crowd, but the service was still amazing. Our waitress Zoe was aslo fantastic. We had 2 apps, stuffed mushrooms and calamari both delish. Three of us had the surf and turf. It was great. Steak cooked perfectly and shrimp so good. My husband had the Nueces bay flounder, also very good. My son had the ribeye. Nicely cooked as ordered and tender. My other son had coconut shrimp. They were perfect, nicely breaded and well portioned. Each meal got two sides and a salad. This place has fantastic. I would definitely give it a try. read more

It's nothing fancy, but our breakfast was solid! We tried buttermilk pancakes with bacon added, waffles with blueberries and sausage, egg plate with biscuits and the captains omelette. Omelette was really stuffed. Just a tad too stuffed for my husbands liking. I do wish they had real syrup. It was the individual packages you get from fast food joints. We are part time islanders and have always wanted more dining choices on the island. We tried Captains Diner this evening for the first time and were pleased enough. We split the Greek salad and a fish and shrimp platter. The salad was large and very good and came with a pita flatbread that was not made in house but wasn't bad. The platter came with two sides of your choice and a soup or salad. We chose fries and vegetables and the soup. The soup was creamy chicken and was not good at all. Canned chicken in a very salty cream base. Do Not Get It! Vegetable side was zucchini and tomato I think. Unmemorable at best. Now on to the main course. The fish was fried nicely and was very good. Two and a half fillets! The shrimp were fresh tasting and fried nicely too. Maybe slightly overcooked but not dry. Fries were lightly coated and perfectly fried. Overall, a very nice option for the island and I will go back and try the breakfast. read more

Ate here with my party of 6 the other day. The experience wasn't great and the food was just OK. Won't be going back though. Between all of us...we had the catfish, jumbo shrimp, hush puppies, fries, ribeye steak, coconut shrimp, mozzarella sticks, seafood stuffed crab, side salads and a few other sides I don't remember. All of the food was decent, but the only thing that was really good was the seafood stuffed crab. The shining star was you get a lot of food for the price! The biggest downfall though was we had to eat outside because we brought our small dog with us. We called ahead to make sure they had outdoor seating. Turns out they do, but it's terrible. There is no cooling (not even a fan). Which was strange because they had a misting fan inside the restaurant, but nothing for the outside seats. The chairs were super uncomfortable, and our table was covered with bird poop! I asked them to wipe it, and they said they would, but didn't, even after sitting us. I had to get wet wipes out of my car and do it myself. It was so hot and humid and we were all completely miserable. Your experience would probably be better inside...but the food isn't good enough to come back again and try that out. read more

Our first time there. Clean. Roomy. Welcoming staff. Immediate service even though they were quite busy. The steak dinners came highly recommended so we each ordered the 8 oz N.Y.strip. It came with a garden salad and choice of 2 sides. My niece chose baked potato and green beans, I chose corn, and baked potato. The serving were generous, especially the salad. Steaks delicious. I didn't go inside, but picked up food to take home. The customer service was great and the order was ready when they promised... PLUS this was good solid island fish food! Very flavorful and fresh. The fish was slightly overcooked, but the flavor made it easy to overlook doneness. Very, very large portions! Delicious hush puppies; loaded baked potato was a side we selected and it was cooked perfectly with a crispy exterior and fluffy potato interior and all the fixings to go with it. California veggies, another side we chose, were made up of broccoli, cauliflower, carrots all were well seasoned: not overcooked, not undercooked... Just right! We bought one dinner... It was enough for two people and we had leftovers! So, really a great value. You see two plates in my photo but that is one order! It also comes with a stuffed crab, which didn't have a lot of crab meat, but it was still oh so good! Look at the size of that side salad! And the Greek dressing is just out of this world! Place has gone downhill. In the beginning, the food was excellent but as with every other restaurant on the island, starts out great then they cheapen the quality of the food. My mom always looks forward to eating here when she visits but this last time her fried catfish tasted very fishy, she could not eat it. I had the stuffed flounder which I always order because it's so good, same thing, very fishy however the stuffing was Still good. This was such a good meal. My mother had the crispy chicken salad, I had the Greek salad with chicken and my dad had a Philly cheesesteak. All meals were really yummy.
