It's very rare that I'm able to find a spot in LA with a great view and delicious food but Cara Cara is definitely the spot with both. I dined here yesterday with one of my friends and we loved everything about this restaurant. We ordered the cauliflower tacos, fries, fried chicken, and the s'mores tart. The cauliflower tacos were so flavorful with nuts and a side salsa that was delicious. The fried chicken was recommended to us by our server and it was perfectly cooked with an amazing side sauce to dip it in. The fries were good and also served with a sauce. The s'mores tart was absolutely delicious and I'm glad our waiter recommended it. We ended the night with two cups of tea to enjoy the view. The service here was great. Our server, Steven Del Vecchio, was so welcoming and friendly. He recommended the perfect items for us and we're glad we went with his suggestions. He checked up on us multiple times and made our experience here perfect. Thank you Steven! You were awesome. The host outside was also really friendly and he walked my friend and I to our car at the end of the night. The service was excellent which is very rare to find these days. Finally made it in and we weren't disappointed. Made reservations and we were casually greeted and seated. Very nostalgic artsy building. The first thing one notices is their panoramic city view of DTLA. The place is busy and lively. Friendly staff and relaxing environment. For dinner we shared pork tacos and fried chicken. Also tried their chorizo pizza. Our favorite was the fried chicken. Full of flavors and cooked to perfection. For drinks we ordered their tiki punch and passion fruit caipirinha. There was a thing (or two) that made it less than five stars but we had such a nice time and were so taken care of by Queenie (and company)... honestly I had 5 stars checked off until I looked at the bill again just now and see that there was an $8 "wellness surcharge". The fck? I don't want to have to be looking that hard at the bill after a martini and a glass of wine. OK, it's not JUST that charge that dropped it a star... look, the place is really nice but I just spent $183 on a lunch (before tip!). Add tip, valet parking and it was a over a $250 lunch. It was super good... maybe not that good. Another kind of BS charge? The valet added TAX to the valet fee... that was a new one for me. Businesses should tell you up front about "wellness surcharges" and "valet taxes"... roll that crap into your up front advertised prices. First, there is no guarantee that it is going towards anyone's health benefits or even that it is going toward the employees. And forgive the rant...I know that everyone uses "wellness" now instead of "health" but the whole sugar-coating of this added-cost by (mis?)labeling it a "wellness surcharge" instead of "random added fee" kinda miffs me. Now, before I start looking like the grinch that can pay for valet parking but can't throw a bone to healthcare for BOH dishwashers, all I'm saying is please don't surprise me with this... it's not a standard cost on most restaurant tabs and I'd rather just know that the $24 martini is actually costing me $25. And what's with the sales tax on Valet Parking? This page from the California Dept of Tax and Fee Administration says its not even taxable... https://www.cdtfa.ca.gov/lawguides/vol2/suta/550-0870.html But let's, for a second, say that it IS taxable... put the final cost on the advertised price that is printed on the front of the valet stand. (And you added exactly $1.50 on to the $17? What tax rate are you using?) (But even given all that, it was a four-star experience thanks to the food quality and Queenie.) Great martini, great Cara Cobb Salad, genius carrot tacos. I mean, carrot tacos... who da thunk it? But these huge carrots (in tortillas with Cotija y Otras Cosas) were like the consistency of meat (if that's a good thing)... not too mushy, not too crunchy. The martini was very good. The quality of the olives were not lost on me but it was a $23 martini... am I losing touch with reality or is that no longer an expensive martini? (I asked for Tito's and I think Grey Goose was $2 or $3 more) Sorry... I don't mean to make this review just about the money but also worth noting that the $34 scallops consisted of exactly two scallops. The views are the best by far! Better than Cabra next door. I will come back again just for the views and maybe a snack but not a full on meal... the food was just ok. It's recommended to make reservations, and I preferred to use valet, which can be validated so you pay $14+ (excluding tip). There is also a lot next door. Not sure what the cost is. Came here twice. In the evening with just two people and the service was quick and excellent. But when I came with a group of 8, the service was not as attentive and we had to flag down the server several times (to order, for drinks, for condiments, etc.). Midway, the server had a shift change, and I thought it would improve but I hardly saw that person either. I learned later that they charge a mandatory service charge that ended up being like $72 (basically the tip), which was a bit outrageous. I wonder if it made the server not really want to be as attentive or present. The food is decent. They're all lovely to look at and great to eat, but outside of the mussels, it wasn't that memorable. If you want memorable food I recommend the restaurant on the first floor of the same hotel building. The flavors there are different and memorable and a much higher quality (so is the service). We came on a Saturday for birthday lunch and it wasn't too pack, but I still suggest making reservations. Restaurant is on top of Proper hotel and paid parking is right next to hotel. The restaurant is right through the modern, beautiful bar and be ready for some breathtaking views! You really can't go wrong with seating. You will get views from every angle. They do have a very cute pool right next to the restaurant for photo ops. Restaurant is spacious and nicely decorated. Staffs were amazing! We did not have to wait to be seated. We ordered for starter the lobster rolls, fries, and piri piri chicken. FYI the rolls are small, but delicious! The piri piri chicken is a must! It was crunchy and full of flavor. It had a smoky cumin taste to it and went so well with the sauce it came with. It went great with my aperol spritz! All the starters were yummy! We ordered the mussels and pork tacos for our main and it did not disappoint. The mussels were hearty and rich. The pork tacos were decadent and savory. Each dish was seasoned perfectly! I had a great experience at Cara Cara. I came here for a GNO and was not disappointed with the vibe. I do think that their view of the skyline is unmatched in Downtown LA. They offer valet parking ($14.30 for 3 hours) and the restaurant is located on the rooftop of the proper hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful, and the rooftop has incredible vibes. We had an incredible server (I wish I could remember her name, she is from South Carolina), and the ambiance was great. The rooftop is outside, with a portion covered that also has heaters. This place does not get 5 stars from me, because the food could have been better. Most times, you will be compromising either the view, or the food so I was not that surprised. The menu is curated for shareables and tapas. We opted for pork tacos, shrimp tacos, fried chicken, and fries. They were good, but not great. Overall, I think the place is worth visiting for the views and pictures, but recommend grabbing a drink instead of planning dinner here. For the high price and swanky vibes of Cara Cara, you can get one of the best views of DTLA via a large rooftop that would be fun for either a casual weekday or a weekend night out. I visited with a friend on a Sunday for the first time and found the absolutely amazing views and service. Especially ask for Sam or Josh at the bar. They are absolutely amazing, friendly, and make you want to come back. My friend and I were speaking to them about the interesting cocktail concoctions they have and were making as we were at the bar for food and drinks. If you review their menu, you would see some ingredients infused alcohol which I can validate that these are made in-house as they were making two of them in front of us. Both Sam and Josh seem very passionate about working at Cara Cara and helpful in sharing both food and drink favorites which we ended up ordering. As it was quite chilly outside, the mussels were such a great recommendation as the hot and savory broth steams the mussels for a succulent juice with the tenderness and flavorful seafood meat. Had a reservation on the rooftop outdoors on a rainy windy day. They reached out ahead of time to inform that indoor seating was limited on availability but upon time of arrival I was given an option to sit indoor or outdoor. Being from LA and enjoying the rooftops during beautiful sunny days, I decided to sit outdoors during the rainy night to enjoy a different vibe which turned out to be great regardless the rain. They had covered seating outdoors but with slight wind the rain would reach my seat occasionally. If you don't mind a breeze of mist during your dinner at a rooftop on a rainy day in LA then 10/10 would recommend anyway. They had multiple heaters outside so it was definitely warm! I took three friends from out of town to Cara Cara a while back. We had a wonderful table on the terrace with a spectacular review of DTLA. They were all so impressed with the food. We started with their famous Piri Piri chicken, so good you could eat several orders of them. But don't! There's so much other good food on the menu. I could go through it all, but one of my friends who is an expert grill master, and smokes his own meats, said that the pork chops he had were the best he had ever eaten. Came here for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. I walked up to the building and was met with security who took us straight to the elevator and was super helpful. After that we were seated in a timely manner by the hostess. Our waitress was so amazing to us and brought our food out as it was ready. I am deeply disappointed at the level of service we received at this establishment, which felt discriminatory. A friend and I arrived to the front of the hotel and were greeted by two "doormen" who asked where we were headed we said the rooftop and they proceed to tell us it was closed for a private event. They then proceeded to tell us we could come to their restaurant, which we did, someone there then offered us a seat in their "speak easy", Dahlia which was very cute and service was great. Once there, you have to head to the second floor to use the bathroom--to our surprise we found out the rooftop was open, with plenty of tables, no reservations needed. Back to Dahlia, I realized they were sending anyone that looked 40+ and non-white to this "speakeasy". As we were leaving the establishment a couple hours later, as we waited for Uber, I saw and heard people telling the aforementioned "doormen" they were heading to Cara Cara, they weren't asked if they had reservations or if they were part of the "private event", they were female and definitely under 40. There was no obvious dress code as people in LA dress in PJs to go out. I was dressed smart/upscale so I know this was not an issue. Thumbs up this review if you had a similar experience. California law prohibits discrimination based on age and ethnicity in public accommodations, including restaurants. Ordered the snapper. It was very yummy. The purée is under the fish and i was a bit hesitant about this but it ended up pairing well with the fish. For drinks I ordered the strawberry mint drink it was sweet (I like sweet drinks). You do get the taste of mint but it isn't too strong. The service was adequate. Our server came to us twice (to ask how food was and to get the check)but there were others who came constantly to refill our waters and picked up our plates quickly. Came to grab some drinks with some friends and celebrate! We were treated at the door by really nice staff, who asked if we had reservations. We didn't have reservations & it was a Wednesday afternoon, so it was not busy at all. I recommend making a reservation because it could get packed easily. We were only there for drinks so we sat at their fireplace couch. Amazing views of LA & you can get a view of the infamous buildings near the Crypto arena. I parked just before the hotel for $10, although they do offer valet. I was warmly greeted at the door of The Proper hotel and walked to the elevator that took me to the penthouse floor. We started off with drinks, my server let me try a couple of red wines before making my selection. We ordered the focaccia and date & cheese plate for our starters; filling and blast of flavors to start off the meal. Our 2nd course we went with the branzino and broccolini, delicious and large portions. Dessert was lady spice cake with ice cream and chocolate chip & walnut cookies, a nice treat to finish up the experience. I'm writing to express my extrme dissatisfaction with Cara Cara's billing charge. We came to your rooftop last Thursday and I wrote an email to the restaurant on Friday morning. But until now five days later, not a single reply is heard! On Thursday night, we have 4 people heading to the rooftop bar. No servive. At 11pm, a man show up and ask us to leave immediately. No headup. so the check out process was in a rush. Later when i check my husband's receipt, i found that there is a 5% wellness charge of $9.3. No one tell us about this. What the hack is that? Also the tips suggested is based on the total price with tax and the wellness charge, instead of the original price $186! so our order was about 186 but what we paid at the end is 250+! The extra 66 is over 35% of our original bill! This is not acceptable and we are very angry. I hope to get at least an explanation. I want to get refund for the wellness charge and I hope to change the tip to 0 if i could read more
