I've gone here whenever I've had the misfortune of going to Childrens down the street. I've had the steak and cheese and the Greco chicken. Both subs were pretty phenomenal. Higher quality sub rolls, a good ratio of filling to roll, and quality ingredients. I love the vibe in the shop itself. This was difficult to rate (probably closer to 3.5 stars) but I do intend on coming back, so I'll update it, if need be, on my next visit. Pro tip: order online for pickup and you'll be much happier. I'll start off by saying, yes, the customer service there is pretty bad and quite a few other reviews mentioned that. I called the first time, was put on hold for 10 minutes, and then just hung up on. I tried calling back immediately and the fire time got a busy dial tone and then it just rang and rang and no one answered. Determined to try it, I found out you can order online (make sure you do this!) and set off to pick it up. When I got there, there were 5 people waiting outside for their subs (all had ordered over the phone) and one guy had ordered 50 minutes earlier and his food wasn't ready. I walked in, and my food was ready, despite ordering only 20min earlier. So I think because when you order online it prints something out for them, I'd recommend you do that. As for the food itself, it's massive and it's good. I got the cherry bomb and despite being a bit meh on pepperonis normally, it was really good. Like one of the better steak subs I've had. Period. The large is definitely a two person sub (although I painstakingly finished it myself). I definitely want to go back and try something else though. Will definitely order online. read more

Excellent subs...finally competition for Bob's of Medford. If I lived closer I would be in trouble. Carls is top 2 in the state. I go back and forth between Carls and Joes (Boston) on who is number 1 But really Carls is number 1 lol Carls NEVER misses the subs are always good. My only gripe is I wish they used seasoning to flavour the the steak like Joes does. But Carls uses better quality meat than ANY SHOP IN THE STATE and that's a fact. Delicious steak sub! Would definitely come back again to try something else, maybe at a little less busy of a time. My wife and I came here for a chill Saturday night dinner. Ordered just a large sub to share between the two of us - we got the Cherry Bomb Steak Sub which comes with salami, peppers, BBQ sauce and tomato sauce. The sub is huge and hot. I thought that it tastes a lot like a pizza but in steak sub form - really the best of both worlds. Not a classic steak bomb and I would be curious to come back again to try something else too. I like to keep it simple and get a cheese steak with peppers, onions and hots and dang was this delicious. And not to mention this was a SMALL and it was the size of my forearm haha. Hands down an excellent place to grab some huge cheesesteak subs. I've been meaning to drop by here ever since I started to work in Waltham again. I got the "mistake" sub with teriyaki sauce, steak, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and american cheese. Steak is well seasoned and definitely worth the hassle of finding a parking spot (what I did was camp for a spot in the nearby gas station, called it in and scurried over to pick it up). So I worked at Carl's from 2019-2021. Many of the customers will remember me. I loved our customers so much and I've never worked at place where do many people were so happy and enthusiastic to be there. It was awesome! And I knew that enthusiasm because I had been a customer there for years before working there. And I also genuinely love the owner- Eric. He's a person that really, really cares about & takes care of the people that work for him. Unfortunately, we had to raise to price of subs by $2.00 when the pandemic began. But, I can tell you that the beef producers MORE THAN DOUBLED the price they charged us. We still actively searched out the best meat we could get, and we absolutely made sandwiches of the same size and quality as we always did. I don't work here anymore, but I'm legitimately proud of the time I spent there and the quality of good we made for people. The people I worked with that are still there are wonderful humans that I'm glad I met. And Eric Lando, the owner, is one of the best humans I've ever met or worked for. A really, really good guy that stays in the lives and mentors the people that work for him. And also- Carl's sandwiches are legitimately the best ever. Every sauce is homemade. Been coming to Carl's for a few years, but no more. Horrible service experience when they're busy. They have no process. They called out my name because my order was ready but then kept taking new orders as my sandwich sat cold for 15 minutes. Why call out my name if you're not going to ring me out? When I spoke up, they said everybody's got a wait their turn and gave me serious tude: "not everyone is privileged, I know it's hard for boomers to wait". So sandwich was cold when I got it. Fully solid. I'm a Philly boy originally, and this would compete favorably with anything from our neck of the woods. Good, umami-rich, just the right kind of chewy shaved steak, piled thick so it falls out of a roll, plenty of cheese mixed into it. (I did not have the cheese mis-distribution problems elsewhere described.) They offer a variety of different "flavors"; none kills the meat or the other ingredients with too much sauce. I *would* like them to offer a bit more in the way of spice/heat/kick. The Cherry Bomb, allegedly their hottest, barely tickled me. Next time I'll order extra hots, I guess. This place is delicious and it is much more than just steak subs, although that is what they are known for. I ordered a BLT sub from here and it was more bacon than lettuce and tomato which is fine with me, plus the bacon was done just right. The place is a tiny inside but evidently knows what they are doing since their steak sub is very popular.
