This end of Duval can be a little bit too touristy. By that I mean big time. Pretty much anything north of Fleming is a tourist trap. That's why Caroline's surprised me. We stopped by here after reading they have a good Cuban Mix sandwich, which is one of my favorites. The bartender was quick and efficient and confirmed that the Cuban was worth ordering. Food came fast and was tasty. I'd come back here again if looking for a sandwich. read more

Had a Rum Runner and the Butter Lettuce Wraps, Hubby had blackened chicken sandwich. I loved my wraps except everything is sweet. I prefer more balance with heat or something acidic but I ate all of them so that tells you something, would have been 5 stars if the entree hadn't been so sweet. Food was blah. Don't get the burger. Requested it cooked medium, arrived well done. Cheese was not even melted. Bacon was almost underdone (menu says crispy bacon). There was almost half a raw onion on the burger. My husband got the fish sandwich. It wasn't good either. There are much better places to go in KW. read more

This is another classic spot on Duval to come alone or with others. The menu has several options although a little tricky for picky eaters. Nonetheless my vegetarian and I (the picky eater) were able to find some suitable options. I ordered the calamari and my friend a salad and the bruschetta, which was the real star of the show. I don't believe the pictures or description do justice to the simplicity of this dish but also how delicious it is, I HIGHLY recommend. As for the service it was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The ambiance is very relaxed and they do a great job at keeping airflow happening for an outdoor spot. Lastly, I have to give them props on their bathroom which seems to be accessible to the public and that's a nice touch/tip when walking around aimlessly on Duval. All in all I recommend! read more

I came down to the keys for a business day trip and grabbed lunch here on the way to a meeting. Immediately upon trying to place my take out order this guy skipped me and seated another customer. I didn't make a big deal about it because I wasn't looking for a table anyway. I was literally just trying to order take out. So first the prices that they have online are not the actual prices. My boss ordered a fish sandwich that reads about $12 or $13 on the menu but it really is $16. Since we were take out and I'd asked foe the checks to be separate, the young lady at the bar had to combine them back because the prices weren't right as my boss gave me what she thought was enough based on what was posted. I ordered the Philly steak sandwich that had no seasoning whatsoever on the meat itself and banana peppers wasn't even an option as a topping. Like how can you have a Philly with banana or even jalapeño peppers. It just isn't a Philly without it. However I could've overlooked all of that had it just had some seasoning. It didn't even have salt and pepper. Confused. Every time I come down here, I am disappointed in the food options. The young lady at the bar though was really nice and agreed that management needs to post the correct prices. read more

I stopped by here a couple of Sundays ago for dinner as part of a party of 6. We happened to be walking down Duval St. around dinner time whenever we saw the menu for Caroline's Cafe and decided to eat there. The place was busy and so we were put on a wait. After around 20 minutes or so, we were seated at a table. Caroline's cafe is an all open air restaurant with plenty of seating and then a bar area as well. On the day that we were there, there also happened to be a baby chick and it's parent there. Somehow the adult chicken ended up on the roof of the restaurant and the baby chick was making crazy loud noises. This prompted a worker to chase the adult off of the roof and back to the baby chick which finally stopped chirping. This whole process took maybe 10 minutes and was quite amusing for our table to watch. For dinner on this day I decided to get the Macon & bacon salad while my wife went with the bamboozled salad. The menu described my salad as Crispy fried chicken, corn, Vidalia onions, crunchy bacon, maple pecans, romaine lettuce, and Caroline's homemade ranch dressing and my wife's as Grilled chicken breast, rice noodles, wontons, green onions, almonds, mandarin oranges, sesame seeds, and romaine lettuce with Asian vinaigrette. Within a reasonable amount of time, our food made it to the table and we were ready to eat. I don't like judging a restaurant on a salad alone most of the time but at least the salads both my wife and I ordered had some substance to the mix. My salad ended up being pretty good as the fried chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Then the bacon added a nice flavor to it and the maple pecans added a nice crunch. My wife also enjoyed her salad especially the oranges and she thought the whole salad tasted fresh. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. Our whole table enjoyed all of the food that we had here, the people watching was great and we will all not forget that baby chick. read more

This is always a definite lunch stop for us every time we are in Key West. I've had sandwiches, burgers, and salads and have never been disappointed and the drinks are good too. Today at the suggestion of a bartender at another establishment I ordered the Boston Lettuce Wraps with Chicken. I chopped it all up and poured on the peanut sauce and the dressing on and I was in Heaven. Everything about it was perfect! Chicken wasn't dry and the dressings were so good. My boyfriend devoured his Caroline's Deluxe Salad. He has gotten it the last 2 trips to Key West and I think he will never get anything else. We both highly recommend this restaurant. Caroline's was a delicious choice for lighter meals. We had been eating heavily for a few days what with key lime pie and conch fritters. We were able to be seated pretty quickly. However, I really love how the manager checked in with the waitress in our section to make sure she wasn't feeling overwhelmed. Our waitress was really nice and friendly, giving us smiles when possible. We were feeling a bit dehydrated due to the intense heat, so I can't comment on their alcoholic beverages. We ordered the dolphin fingers to start. The dip was tangy and delicious and the fingers were dipped in a light batter. I ordered the Bamboozled salad. It was super bright and refreshing. My husband ordered the Island Style roast pork bowl. It was a bit richer, but full of flavor. Overall, this is a pretty solid choice for dinner. Great people working there with yummy food and light options. Also, expect to see roosters and chickens running around. We were lucky to see a baby chick too! read more

BUGS IN FOOD Stopped in here for lunch and drinks only to leave with the painstaking knowledge that there are now god-knows how many weevil corpses making their way through my intestines. I ordered the "Chicken Brocolini": penne pasta, chicken chunks, broccoli, and cheese sauce. While I'm here, I might as well mention that the "sautéed chicken breast" in the pasta was actually hard, dry chunks, most likely the pre-cut, frozen from the bag sort- no fresh sautéing. Now for the part you've been waiting for: after eating my pasta for a while, I noticed a fly on a piece of my chicken. No problem, I just pull the piece out and set it aside. As I attempt again to take a bite of chicken, I now see a small, legged bug. Now this freaks me out because I know this sort of bug. It's a weevil. The kind that lives in rice, flour, pasta, lentil, and cereal boxes in your pantry; and where there's one, there are many more, not only in the contaminated dish, but from the source box in the kitchen pantry. The ensuing inspection of my dish quickly led to the discovery of weevils galore. Mostly whole weevil bodies but sometimes what were clearly just separated bug legs too. It goes without saying that the bugs were easy to distinguish from pepper grains since they were legged, with segmented lines on their bodies, and were, quite simply put: just fucking bugs. At this point I was gargling with water and contemplating my life, but ultimately just wanted to pay the check and leave. I showed my mom, however, and she made the fair point that she didn't want to 'pay to eat bugs' so she called the manager over to show her the weevils. The lady that came took took my plate away for "inspection in the back" and returned a long while later with a different plate containing some white flour with black pepper flakes mixed in so she could teach me what pepper looks like... I responded with a friendly,"Listen, it really doesn't matter to me, I ate the bugs and I'll never be back here again anyway, I'm just telling you because those are the bugs that are back in your kitchen, living in boxes in your pantry." Rather than providing a simple "I'm sorry about the experience, and I hope you do come back to try us again," or something of the like, I was met with, "That's okay honey, this place has been open for 30 years" implying that she 'doesn't need my business'. At this point she had walked away to alter our check to remove the pasta dish, and when she returned I showed (well, tried to...) her the pictures of the bugs in my pasta only for her to glance at the phone and then completely ignore me and begin talking to my husband about which receipt he needs to sign. The utter lack of customer service, or even common decency was appalling. To be honest it's probably a good enough place in general, as long as you don't order pasta. Waitress was friendly and the other food was okay too. But for a problem (especially such a severe one) to be handled so poorly by management is unacceptable. read more

We choose to eat at Caroline's bc the menu looked appealing. My seared tuna salad was big & delicious and the dressing was heavenly. Everyone was friendly and service was good. I bought a gift at the neighboring gift shop connected to the store. I left it and I was already an hour away. The manager put me in touch with the gift shop and they called me right back and I asked if I can pay for the shipping and they happily wrapped it up and sent it to me. Top notch all around. We live in Florida and make it down to Key West a couple times a year to listen to music and eat too much... We always end up here at least once and always enjoy. The high reviews surprise me because this was only okay. I had the shrimp po boy with fries. The fries tasted like frozen fries, very bland. Absolutely huge portions and over priced for very basic items. The shrimp poboy was good except the lettuce on it was wilted, I loved the bread on it but the shrimp again were very bland and there wasn't enough sauce on it to compensate. My sister had the shrimp BLT and also said it was only okay and nothing she couldn't have made herself. Had a wonderful dinner at Caroline's on a Friday evening! We sat out side overlooking Duval Street and enjoyed the people watching and the fans they had blowing everywhere to help keep everyone cool on a hot evening. Our waiter was a super nice guy and very personable. He was very into the menu and his food recommendations were spot on. For dinner I ordered the Spicy Cajun Jambalaya which was packed with sautéed shrimp, chicken, andouille sausage, peppers, onions & tomatoes over rice. This dish was a homerun, the sausage was delicious and spicy and the combination of ingredients just made every mouthful perfect. It was a good sized portion for the price and very fresh. My wife went with the Yellowfin & Greens Fresh tuna filet seared rare with toasted sesame seeds, baby lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers & balsamic vinaigrette. This was her favorite meal of our trip. I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by my experience here! I have a preconceived notion that Key West, especially Duval St, is a highly priced tourist trap. Generally m, I think I am right but Caroline's was not the expected rip off I thought I was walking into! Seating was immediate in a shaded table. Our server 'Gretchen' came over immediately with a smile, greeted us and took our very needed drink orders. Our ICE COLD beers were served within 5 minutes and she took our food order. We ordered; -Conch Fritters -Burger Food was excellent and the burger DEFINITELY rivals the one served across the street from them at The Hard Rock Cafe. Way to go! The service was great! It is hotter than h-e-double hockey sticks, but all of their fans, misters, and umbrellas make it comfortable to sit outside. I always come here for the shrimp po'boy and they did not disappoint. Lot's of shrimp, fried with a light well seasoned breading, fresh crispy lettuce, big slices of fresh tomato, and the best remoulade. It is hard to keep everything from falling out, but super tasty! I had a yummy mild Bloody Mary. It came with three olives and was freshly made. My boyfriend had a beer (not a large selection). We shared a key lime pie slice. Most establishments in Key West offer large slices of Key Lime Pie but we found the slice here to be super small and underwhelming with not much flavor. We would not recommend. The bathroom situation was horrendous. apparently They are renovating but there was only one functioning female bathroom and it was gross and smelling with a pool of standing water outside of the door that ruined my shoes (yick). My wife and I really enjoyed our dinner. After a few days of eating fried food, we were looking for lighter, more healthy fare. We ordered the Ahi Tuna app, Ahi tuna and greens salad and the Asian style chicken salad. Both salads were filling, delicious and refreshing. We ended with a slice of key lime pie, which was the perfect combination of sweet and tart. The staff were very friendly and the service was excellent. They are also dog friendly which we appreciated as we love animals and were missing our canine friends back home. We will definitely come back to this place if we make it back to Key West some day. read more

Was in Key West for the day and was walking around doing some shopping. We stumbled across this place. When we got here it wasn't very busy but it took awhile for our waitress to approach our table. We gave her our drink order and after about 15 minutes she returned with our drinks. We gave her our lunch order. One cheeseburger with fries and one bacon cheeseburger with fries. After about 30 minutes we received our food. The bacon was missing from the burger. When I mentioned this to the waitress she said she'd bring me some back. 20 minutes later I received my bacon. By this time I had already started eating my burger. The food was average. My biggest complaint is the waitress. She never once smiled. Was not friendly at all. I do want to give credit to the older gentleman who seated us. He was very friendly and kept apologizing for our long wait. read more
