The food portions are the thing that stand out most. The prices might be a tad high for my liking but the portions make it work. The decor is not anything exciting. There are some things broken down/ breaking down. Booth torn in spots, carpet peeling away, a stool you can't sit on etc. Not anything surprising for this type of place. Just not a place to come if you want to be impressed by the ambience and decor. The other thing I will say and it looks like it's been touched on already in other reviews and I totally agree, there are signs everywhere: 2 hr limit No checks accepted $1 per plate added when sharing To go orders 50¢ per order No outside food, coffee, energy drinks etc I understand there are rules and such. Not a fan of them being so in your face. It's in bold and in different font so you can't miss it. Also the piece of white printer paper taped to the door written in sharpie...really? Tasty food, huge portions, only 1 problem. I haven't ate here for about 2 yrs. Just because I'm not in that part of Vancouver often. My family and I stopped in on our way home from the pumpkin patch. My mom had the corned beef hash, my sister the Mikey burger, my husband had the same as her, and I had a 1/2 order of a bacon & cheese omelette with a side of gravy for my hash browns. Our 2 kids had a 4 inch pancake, 1 sausage, 1 bacon strip and eggs. Food came, it was huge ( I forgot how large the portions are ) Everything tastes great, no issue there. The waitress and the staff were amazing, since we showed up 30 minutes before closing, and we didn't walk through the door because we didn't want them to be there longer than they would be. But we were told to come on in and enjoy some food, and that the staff would be there until we leave, no problem. OKAY! Only issue was the flies. I get it, the door was open all day. For the love of God put out some fly strips or something. We were swatting away flies through out the meal. So other than the flies everything else was fine. Will we be back any time soon? Probably not, and not because of the food, but just because it's a once in awhile thing to go here for us. read more

Carol's is unpretentious and just delivers on what they do!!! If you want crab Benedict go to Zell's. If you want a great American menu breakfast (with large portions Hahahaha) try Carol's. First time to Carols.....I got the homemade corned beef hash. Huge huge portion (ask for light onions unless you are crazy about onions) great flavor to the pulled brisket. Don't just come hungry, come with TWO STOMACHS! This place is getting famous for it's intensely over-sized home-style breakfasts. I've been here twice now and it's still amazing to me how high they can pile omelettes, biscuits with gravy, and hash browns. It's been packed both times I've been there, and despite the crowd the cafe still runs with great efficiency. Imagine a long line at the door, waitresses with 4-5 plates on their arms, and hostesses frantically seating as fast as they can. Their biscuits and gravy is not my favorite of all time, but still in my top five. I also enjoyed their corned beef hash. My sister's boyfriend ordered a sausage omlette with hash browns and just kept looking at the mountainous pile of morning meal mess in awe. I have had a few meals of 'man food' in my day, but Carol's makes man food that actually tastes homemade and not covered in grease. Pancakes do not taste like chemicals. Real butter, real potatoes, real eggs, big portions that hurt. I read a review that the decor was less than what the person thought appropriate. It is always clean with a side of they don't give a chit what it looks. They decorate for the holidays in cheesy paper cut outs, the servers have been there forever and talk to you like a regular. If you don't like that style of atmosphere with your delicious omelet or burger, then do not go. read more

I can't rave about this place enough. I shared half an omelette with my husband and my daughter had the biscuit with gravy. My son had the kids pancake with sausage and let me just say it was all amazing. We needed 2 boxes just for our food because we had so much left but the value for what we got was incredible. The breakfast entrees are big enough to save all the starving children in Africa, Andre the Giant (were he still alive), or Snorlax (were he real). The hashed browns reach to the heavens approximately six inches high from the surface of the plate. They tasted great, but were a bit too soft for my taste. I heard a regular next to me order them "extra crispy." Now I know what to do next time. There are two versions of corned beef hash on the menu. One is a regular menu item, and comes from a can. The other is a special made from fresh corned beef. Simply put, it blew my mind. The beef was so tender and flavorful, my mouth almost watered so much I chocked on my own saliva. I didn't personally sample it, but I saw homemade cinnamon buns filling every space on six-inch-diameter dinner plates being delivered to other tables. I could smell the sugar and frosting as they exited the kitchen--even over the delightful smells of all the bacon, eggs and savories. The leftovers we left with provided two additional meals. The friend who me about this place noted the fact that it's hard to get a seat because very large locals plop down and stay all day. I thought this was an unflattering exaggeration; I had no troubled being seated (at the counter), but sure enough, the menu actually states there is a two hour time limit! I can see why someone would want to live here. Plus, if you were really attempting to finish your meal you'd almost have to unhinge your jaw like a snake, hibernate, molt, and stay put for a few weeks to repeat the process. read more

Another place where people are happy to stand in line to get in, even in the rain. On a winter Thursday morning. Do go. To a hungry tourist from Portland, New Years' Brunch was entertaining enough, even without snow, or the mountainous topography created by the food. It was prime-time for People Watching. The breakfast plates are charicatures of themselves. Not to mention the Diners. Looked like some just returned from a parade. Amid gruff and grizzled Veterans who seem to think it's normal to swim in the largest platters of sausage gravy possible, the Vancouver 20-something glitterati was there, making the room look little like a Christmas Tree. On no other morning have I seen such a homogenious town offer such variation in morning attire. Or such humongous portions. Glamour-make-up babes still garbed in evening costumes posed a sweetly as possible, seated pertly at large tables of partied-out friends, most of whom sporting drab hide-me hoodies. Fancy hair, high heels and and jewelry still adorned those who never made it home. Glitter gals, I hope you at least scored, for all the amused looks you receive the next morning. It's really Ok to ask friends to share their clothes the next day, if you wanna be more comfortable. The panorama of laggard, dull faces and brunch carnival costumery was forgotten when the food haulers arrived however. Monster plates demanded attention...delivered by strong farm-girl arms to jam-packed tables, taking hung-over revelers to another state of existance. Carol's Corner is reason enough to travel to the Other State for breakfast. Chefs in the 'Couv allow gobs of stuff to hang (artfully?) over the side of the plate, heaped suptiously, albeit irresponsibly, high. (Hell, why fight gravity?) But be ready, such a mountain will inevitably avalanche. It's your job to creates rivers and valleys while avoiding risk of land-slide. Have a mass management plan - and don't try to eat it all in one session. Nor leave any tidbits behind just to try to look extravagantly suave. Remember, you're in the 'Couv. The dregs of the heap promise an EASY full-size nosh the next morning, so scrape away every last bit to be hauled home. Neither waste nor waist, agreed? Life is easier, and better this way! Dieters and the health conscious miss nothing by skipping gravy, salt and low-end cheese. The Veggi Omlette is likely as big as the Denver, and one could do a stir fry later with leftover innards. We used healthy salsa with the huge mass of leftover spuds next day instead of salty, sugary ketchup. Next day, to freshen up leftovers, I added fresh herbs, Avacado and Salsa, and minced green onion for color. It was still a LOT of spuds. He got a little all-white Egg-Beaters filled with half of what was left in the Omlette, to respect cholesterol limits. That allowed me most of thelarge leftover portion of Denver Omlette, and he had guilt-free fresh eggs. He also slicked up a cheery Cantalope for morning snacking. (Orange - my favorite color. Life has it's little bonuses...and I've learned to notice and appreciate and gain encouragement from such small things) At Carols, even skilled Culinary Contractors face a daunting task, bulldozing this mound of food onto share plates and take-home containers. We got the $12 full order - to share, also sharing the wheat toast and 1 small juice, with coffees. That was a bargain compared to 2 small orders for $8-9 each. Just right. Divided realistically, ONE _full-size_ hammy, Denver Omlette with tower of spuds made FOUR large meals, for about $3 each. There was too much the next day to even want toast. Would raise to 5-Stars if: - the Coffee was more robust and flavorful, - and if homey jam was served instead of plastic packets. Jam and fruit sauces are so easy to make, and fruit incredibly abundant in the NW. With fresh lemon or lime this aspect can brighten an entire meal. The persons doing seating could benefit from Bus-person support who helps simplify her effort to keep better tabs on what tables were open, so Guests don't need to stand in the rain. On exiting I advised those waiting in the line to hang in there. No one seemed to care. To their credit, service staff are friendly, hard-working and cheerful on a VERY busy day, they keep the coffee coming and remember who has De-Caf, are happy to bring a 2nd plate for sharing, and offer take home crates even before you ask. Could be considered a plus, but when it is undercooked greasy, GREASY potatoes no seasoning, not even salt, and the corn beef is grey and over cooked, And the eggs had almost zero flavor, which means the probably use the lowest quality eggs possible... I just can't with this place. Coffee tasted like a third pot (water run through the same grounds 3 times) of Folgers. Service was inattentive, but kind. But I ABSOLUTELY have no idea how this place is so busy. Do yourself a favor and skip this corner, carol must be on break or something because this spot is disgusting. read more

The man and I are have been doing low-carb successfully for a few months, and one of the difficult things is finding a restaurant to accommodate us, while still offering things our friends would like. Carol's Corner Cafe fits the bill perfectly. Two fried eggs and a sausage patty filled me up - and was just enough food. The man and our friend got "half-size" omelets that were as big as their heads. The omelets were just as good reheated the next morning. It makes me wonder if the giant portions are part of a diabolical scheme to keep people from needing to go to another restaurant the next morning. .. Hmmm. Well played, Carol. Other good points - the windows let in plenty of light, the servers were attentive with the coffee, and our particular server was EXCELLENT about making sure she got our order exactly right (we wanted a few changes.) There is an overall positive vibe about this place. It's funky and cool without being squalid, and now that I know I can eat there and stick with being low-carb, we'll be back again.
