All of their dishes had great flavors without the need to overdo it with seasonings, salt, sugar, etc. I did feel like the amount of vegetables used on the Avocado Toast was to make up for the slightly small amount of avocado spread. The French Toast comes with real, pure maple syrup that paired really well with the cream and bananas. I would definitely love to come back and sit outside. 2/2! I have been to Carpenters Hall twice and both times have been awesome! A friend and I went for GNO and decided to share a variety of dishes. This was the way to go for us! Here was our line up: Rosemary pecans: if you see them on the menu, get them and order a set to take home. SO GOOD! I wish they sold these pre-packaged to go because they are perfect for holiday parties or to give as gifts. Zucchini salad: great mix of ingredients with perfect flavor combinations. It was enough for two people to share. Beef tartare toast: so delicious. Give it a try Charred green beans: plenty for two but a little salty for us. These actually came out after the beef tartare so not sure if that had anything to do with it or not. The dinner burger: again, we shared this and it was thick, flavorful and delicious in all ways. A local friend of mine recommended this place. Made a reservation for 6pm on a Saturday. We ended up being a few minutes late trying to find an open parking spot on the street. Made our way through the entrance and up to the hostess station. Our table was ready so we were seated right away. Surprisingly it wasn't all that busy. Staff was very pleasant. Emma was our server and she was amazing! She gave us recommendations on drinks and shareable appetizers as well as the shareable main dish. Service was above and beyond. Our party of five ordered up some fried olives, the lil greens salad, the shaved zucchini salad, and the slow-roasted texas lamb. The fried olives were quite interesting and not something I was expecting I would end up liking but it was enjoyable. The salads were really good. The lamb was amazing, and allowed you to sort of build your own taco with the tomatillo, the pickled cabbage, and the flatbread. My only complaint was that this dish just doesn't come with enough bread. We actually had to ask for more, only to find out that they didn't have any more flatbread, so we had to settle on some flour tortillas. I was a bit puzzled how they could run out of flatbread on a Sat night at 7pm. The flour tortillas were ok, but just not the same as that flatbread. The restaurant itself definitely has some history and was part of an original carpenter union hall more than 50 years ago - I forget the year. Excellent meal tonight. Service from KR was top notch - one of those low key and unassuming guys who always shows up exactly when you need him. Food was excellent - the Carpenter salad from the Happy Hour menu was large and uniquely tasty. The scallops with chestnut puree were creative, tasty and perfectly cooked. The smoky Manhattan was very well crafted and presented. The sound track music was interesting and at just the right volume. The ambiance and service were great, but the food lacked quality for the price. The cornbread was good, but do not order the turkey club or the burger. The turkey was wet, cold deli meat that seemed to come straight out of an Oscar Meyer package. And the burger had half melted Kraft American cheese slices on it. Had the chance to explore Carpenters Hall for their Martini Trail and caught the tailwind of service. The staff here is so nice and very welcoming which always makes any dining experience a pleasant one. Drinks were a large focal point of their program and you can see it with the size of their bar. First time here and I have to say it was great . The service was amazing and so was the food . Love the ambiance. Started off with their brioche monkey bread with leek butter , to die for , and also we had the fried mushrooms also to dies for . Reminds me of calamari which we don't eat any more , great substitute. My husband had the cheeseburger and fries which was good nothing different than what we've had in other Austin eateries . I had the steak frites, it was cooked medium rare and was very tender along side French fries. Loved it. Old fashion was great and so were the mule and espresso martini . Omg Carpenters Hall was so delicious! We started with the Parker rolls and wow the honey butter with it was amazing. We split the Brussels and the crispy oyster mushrooms which were to die for. After reading quite a few positive reviews about their burgers being some of the best in Austin, I booked a reservation for Carpenter Hall for dinner. Upon entering the main doors, we were kindly greeted by the Hotel staff and redirected to check in with the Host for the restaurant. Once we made it to the Host stand, any sense of hospitality seemed to no longer exist. I'm unsure if it is the rose pink lighting making the staff feel edgy, or just a general distaste for working in the service industry, but I have never been to a restaurant where I have overheard and experienced so many disgruntled employees. Service was slow and unfriendly, despite the food flying out of the kitchen at full speed. Their BOH was rocking it, but their FOH was just...cranky. I must say that the food was actually quite decent, but the service and attitude we received throughout the duration of our meal left us feeling quite uncomfortable and on our way out almost as quickly as we came. read more

I came here just for the coffee shop, but it is inside a hotel. It's just off Barton springs or Lamar, so it's close to a lot of stuff. The decor is super cute and there are indoor and outdoor areas to enjoy your coffee and/or breakfast. There is a separate restaurant area that seems to be sit down service which also has indoor and outdoor seating and looked even cuter than the coffee shop section. I got the iced ladybird latte and a chorizo, egg, and cheese breakfast taco. Everything was good. I'm only giving 4 stars instead of 4 because it didn't blow me away and I can't give every place 5 stars or it wouldn't mean anything. I liked it and would go back but I'm not obsessed. read more

Wow! This restaurant has it all- Food, Taste AND presentation was all indescribably delicious! We feasted on the Lamb, and a Duck special, accompanied by a carrot delicacy and a specially prepared beet in the shape of a rose! I can't wait to return. I was pretty underwhelmed by my experience at this restaurant. Although the ambience was very nice, I felt that the service was quite lackluster. The mains were not very good given the price point. Definitely very pretty and photo worthy! But I may have had the driest steak of my life. Only thing I would come back for would be the foie gras. That was by far the best thing on the menu that we had. If I were to come back here, I would highly recommend doing drinks and appetizers and getting entrées somewhere else! read more

The husband and I went for dinner after getting a reservation through Resy's Global Dining access. We arrived 20 min early but were told we needed to wait to closer to our time as they didn't want to double up their servers. It was fine given she was transparent but the restaurant is already small and there were a lot of empty tables. But all fine as we grabbed drinks at the bar and were seated at one of the existing empty tables 5 min before our Resy. The appetizers and small plates were excellent but felt the mains were just ok and a little overcooked and dry. Portions were pretty large so we were well fed even before the mains. Given the intentional desire for them to leave empty tables the service was subpar. I would have expected a better level of service as I assume that is their point for not turning the tables quickly. Carpenter Hall salad - very fresh and good salad Parker House Rolls - these were really good and served with a pretty big side of honey butter (not complaining!) Hummus - really good and the chips were excellent with a good portion of fresh vegetables. All in all all we will be back but might opt for heavy appetizers, small plates, and drinks. read more

I love this restaurant. The food. The ambience. The service. The food. The food. I've been several times with different people and everyone has always walked out with a smile. There's a good selection of vegetarian items which last night included a fantastic mushroom side, and a very good salad. Friends I've gone with I've commented positively on the burger and the chowder. The fries are thin and crispy. Because of the price, I may not be able to go quite as often as I would like to, but it's a special place and I highly recommend it for dinner or drinks before or after a show at the Long center. I can't say anything negative about this place! We stayed in this hotel actually for one night and I wish we would have stayed longer! The hotel itself was great as was the little coffee shop downstairs. The best part was Carpenters Hall the restaurant. We had a few cocktails and the BEST mussels we have ever had and we eat them a lot! They were so fresh and big- cooked to perfection! We enjoyed that with an order of fries dipped in their jalapeño aioli. Don't forget dessert . I have a rule if carrot cake is on the menu I must try it.. lol I've clearly had many carrot cakes and am a tough critic. This is by far the best of the best carrot cakes I've tried so far! Came for a date night because we tried their burgers at the Austin Monthly burger fest and thought their smashed was our favorite! We both ordered the burgers again and it was on point as we remembered! The cheese, sauce and smashed patty was such a great flavor combination and we've tried a lot of smashed burgers in Austin. We ordered mocktails that they created based on our favorite flavors and we thought they were delicious and really affordably priced, it's awesome when places can create custom mocktails and not charge the same price as a cocktail! Such a cool vibe! It's very reminiscent of an actual cafeteria or dining hall which brings the nostalgia & fits the name perfectly. They do have indoor and outdoor seating options but we chose inside on this particular day. Our server was perfectly nice but we didn't see her much, it would've been nice if she stopped by more often to check in with us or to ask how our food was. Happy Hour was on the agenda & this place did not disappoint. I had the Teaches of Peaches which tasted like a spicy margarita with a peachy aftertaste, definitely recommend! This was a great little brunch find hidden in a hotel. The atmosphere is very cute and rekacing. The staff was very helpful and friendly. My friend and I split the Carpenters breakfast and the Club Sammie. Both played were delicious!!! I do wish that there was a little more to the breakfast plate for the price. With a nice 60° weather at night, we sat in the patio. They had heat lamps outside. The waiters wore masks and were good at their jobs. It seemed as if we had several servers waiting on us, maybe they were assisting each other. The service was wonderful. The timing between the drink orders, appetizers, and entrees was pretty good. Everything we ordered was delicious: a bowl of fries, broccolini, chicken schnitzel, short rib sugo pappardelle, and Texas strip steak. The schnitzel portion was HUGE and the batter perfectly crispy. We tried several cocktails: blood orange Bellini (very light and refreshing), Texas Gibson, Manhattan, and a glass of Lucien Albrecht NV Brut Rose Fr. Highly recommend this restaurant. Amazing food. Started with the olives & the squash salad. Main courses were the lions mane galettes & the salmon. All were stellar, but the salad and lions mane dishes were the absolute standouts. I got a recommendation to go here from a friend of mine that said the food was good and she did not disappoint me! I made a reservation for a Thursday night at 6:30. It wasn't too busy which was nice because the atmosphere there feels very warm and cozy, and even more so when it's not crowded. We ordered the Labneh and feta dip as a starter. It was delicious and was a healthy serving that we tried not to eat too much of so we could save room for dinner. For main entrees I ordered the salmon and my friend got the burger. The salmon was soooo good. Perfectly seared and with a crispy skin on the bottom. The burger was also very good. It was very large, juicy and dripping with cheese. 2 of us ordered room service. We shared the zucchini salad and double burger. The zucchini salad was delicious! The burger was good size and very juicy. One star taken away for the small amount of fries that were given. Overall, great dinner. Update: we went back the next morning for brunch at 10am. I had somewhere to go and had to leave around 10:45 which we let the waitress know and she said no problem. We ordered entrees with our drinks. Waited 20-25 minutes when our waitress came to apologize that the kitchen never received our order, but was working on it now. The food finally came out at 10:35 along with the manager who apologized and comped the meal since he knew I would barely be able to eat. I ordered the Bibb salad and it was so incredibly bland, the exact opposite of the zucchini salad from the night before. The dressing was thicker than Mayo consistency so some lettuce was dry and there were pockets of unmixed dressing. This review is for dinner only. It looks like lunch options are completely different and likely offers a completely different experience. My short summary of Carpenters Hall is that it's a first date location you take a girl you're trying to impress. The venue is great, good blend of modern and eclectic, and the dim lighting and background music help set the stage. Service is attentive and friendly, all conducive to a nice date. As part of this date, you also be ready to throw down some dough and not focus on food. Ordered the spaghetti and the BBQ fish, our 'entrees' of the night and found out they were portioned for kids. After trying both dishes, they were mediocre at best (3/5), but really not worth $20 - $30 considering you'll likely still leave hungry. Overall I can see some reasons to stop by - maybe lunch, or trying to impress a first date without regard for food, but there's too many good restaurants in Austin that offer ambiance and food to make this a recommendable dinner spot. read more

Weather was not cooperating and while staff was not the most accommodating at first, the helpful guy outside in the black apron saved the day! He put down towels and ended up salvaging the experience. Decor is super cute and trendy. There didn't seem to be many vegan options, but opted for the kale and quinoa salad without feta, which turned out to be much better than I expected! COVID-19 has not been kind to Carpenter's Hall. The shutdown of nearly everything haute cuisine has thrown the kitchen into suspended animation. They sell coffee, kolaches, breakfast tacos, and if you want lunch, a fried chicken picnic box and a mezze box. Otherwise the kitchen ain't open. The bar ain't open. The lovely reconstructed room that is the whole reason for being of the project ain't open. I had never eaten at Carpenter's Hall before the plague hit. It is on my to-do list for when this horrible epidemic comes to an end. A handful of people DO appear to be staying at the hotel, so Carpenter's Hall is not completely dead. Will this be enough to allow them to survive? Who knows? * * * That said, how good is Carpenter's Hall under suspended animation? It is a serious kitchen that sometimes gets a little too fancy-pants for its own good. 50% of the dishes are absolutely wonderful. 50% of the dishes are "trying too hard". * * * Wonderful: The Savory Kolache. American kolaches are big heavy doughballs filled with white flour and white sugar. Every state except Texas avoids them like the plague. I love Texas but I have to go with the sensible 49 on this issue. European Czech bakers bake Czech kolaches, which are smaller, and more flavorful with less wasted dough. European Czech pastry is wonderful. Carpenter's Hall keeps the big doughy concept of a Texas kolache ... alas. But they fill the center hole with a combination of pepperoni pizza topping and caramelized onion. Pepperoni pizza with caramelized onion? Now THAT is a way to start your morning! I will happily get out of bed for that one. I will even eat my white bread too. Too Fancy-Pants: The Lady-Bird Latte. Wildflower Honey and Lavender with Coffee. Lavender belongs in sachets. Wonderful: Fried Chicken with the House Tartar Sauce. The fried chicken is standard homemade fried chicken using a big good chicken. The tartar sauce is standard homemade tartar sauce. Putting them together is like putting together male and female. I was dipping mini batter bits into mini tartar sauce pools for an hour after I finished. I didn't want to stop. Too Fancy-Pants: Nearly all of the vegetable accompaniments. Elaborate looking with lot of ingredients like giant pecans. Tastewise - meh. The potato salad was better than the rest. I will probably toss the rest of my cole slaw. Wonderful: The giant chocolate chip cookies. Big. Thick. The chocolate inside is neither chocolate chips nor chocolate morsels nor chocolate megachunks. But it is good chocolate and there is a lot of it and the cookie plays well on the team. Me: Mommy, can I have another cookie? Mom: Only if you finish your cole slaw. Me: Mom! (I would probably force down the cole slaw because the cookie was that good.) Note however, those cookies are very thick and very big. Sane reasonable rational people would be happy with just one. When it comes to really good chocolate chip cookies, I am neither sane, reasonable or rational. * * * One can not fully discuss Carpenter's Hall without discussing the architecture a refurbishing of a 1950's modern "institutional-style" meeting hall. Frankly - I do not think the architect did a good job ... and that a wonderful wonderful potential site was semi-ruined. The main lobby is ugly. (Compare to the coffee room in the Van Zandt). A lot of the original building is obscured or not used well. However - I did not see the main dining room. Since the whole project is based around that room as a central fundamental destination ... The jury is still technically out and the issue is not settled. * * * I am hoping Carpenter's Hall revives soon. But the Champion "Restaurant in a New Hotel" project of that era still has to go to Vixen's Wedding. That is a legendary establishment. But Carpenter's Hall has its charm. * * * P.S.
