All the reviews I read of carpeting (and flooring) stores pointed to Carpet & Vacuum Expo as the place to start. It was easy to tell that the reviewers were genuinely impressed with the service they received. So I wandered into the bright and immaculate store (located in the Cabin John Shopping Center) and thus began my own wonderful carpeting experience. I was warmly welcomed by Steve Shaffer. He listened to my desires and we set up an in-home appointment to assess my carpeting needs. A few hours later Bruce Barboza arrived at my home and meticulously measured the areas to be carpeted. (Bruce's expertise was abundantly evident!) The next day, Steve contacted me and presented many options and arranged to have carpet samples shipped to me. Within a few days everything was agreed upon and an installation date was set up. On installation day I had the pleasure of meeting Roberto and Joshua. I could tell that their least favorite part of the installation was moving heavy furniture. However, anyone who has wrestled with a Tempur-Pedic mattress will understand the challenge. Roberto and Joshua immediately went to work and quickly removed the old carpeting and padding. I then got to observe their artistry as they expertly covered the many convoluted spaces my layout presented. Roberto deserves special recognition for beautifully binding the edges of the runners. I am completely thrilled by the service provided by Carpet & Vac Expo. Hopefully many others will enjoy these masters of carpeting craft. read more

I have known the owner for over 16 years and he has faithfully always helped me with every flooring issue I could have, to referring me to people who could help me when he could not. For example, I needed a vacuum and he helped me get one that fit my family's needs with pets and asthma. I needed flooring basement that was waterproofing, I needed carpets that shagged, I needed carpets for school, I needed my carpets cleaned from all kinds of disasters, basement flooding, etc. He sent my mom who is a senior there and instead of worrying she will be ripped off, I'm assured he will take care of her. I recommend Carpet & Vacuum Expo. They come to my house promply to measure the dimensions, explained the advantages/disadvantages of the various flooring options. We really appreciated their being patient in discussing the different options, taking our concerns seriously, while at the same time never rushing or pushing us. When we were ready to proceed, they gave us a quote promptly with and without installation. In the end, we decided to go with them for both the material and complete installation. We used Carpet & Vacuum Expo to replace the hardwood on our whole first floor as well as the carpet on our stairs. They were WONDERFUL! My husband and I (a non-white couple) went to this store to buy carpet for our basement. As soon as we walked in, one of the two salesmen started showing us their cheapest products while he repeatedly emphasized "these are our only affordable carpets", without even asking us about our budget. We walked around and browsed other samples. When I asked for the price of a higher quality carpet, the other guy said "I can check but that one is VERY expensive!." I insisted on getting the price (we really liked this one and were ready to buy), while he was checking the price, the other man brought back a sample of the significantly cheaper product and said "are you sure you don't want to look at this one again? This is very nice and it's much cheaper!." When I directly asked why the two of them insisted on selling their cheaper products they responded "we want to offer something that would fit your needs!!" Not sure how they assessed our "needs". I don't know if they assumed we couldn't afford the product we wanted because of our skin color or the fact that we dressed very casually (we don't typically dress up to go to a flooring store!). Nevertheless, they lost a customer for good! read more

Steve Shaffer, the owner, provided personal assistance at every stage of the project. Our project involved taking up old carpeting and refinishing the wooden floors, as well as helping us select new carpeting for several areas and new ceramic floor tiling in the kitchen. The kitchen project required taking up the old ceramic tile and redoing the sub floor underneath -- not an easy job. Steve has excellent crews, who are skilled and very pleasant to work with. He coordinated the work schedule so that the project went very smoothly and on schedule. Steve was very responsive to all questions and made sure that we were happy with the results. C&V Expo put new carpeting throughout my office. The store provided many carpet samples (they have a huge selection) so everyone could vote on which carpet would look best. The installation had to happen Saturday afternoon and Sunday which was no problem. The installers were polite, did an incredible job moving the heavy furniture and stayed to make sure we were satisfied with everything. Our office looks amazing. They did such a great job several of our employees want them to replace the carpeting in their homes. The cost of our carpet and installation from Carpet and Vacuum expo was several thousand dollars less than the other estimate we received. When I walked into the store, I realized that they specialize in flooring and carpet installations. I was a bit embarrassed for assuming vacuum repair, but Steve was so helpful. He was amazing. I have used Carpet & Vacuum Expo for three different projects at my home over the last 7 years. The first two were adding engineered wood (like Pergo) over cement floors. And the last one was adding carpet and laminate to our unfinished basement. Steve is super knowledgable and helpful both in helping you pick out the right kind of product and choosing one in your price range. Most recently, we had to waterproof our basement which meant first having a crew in to jackhammer, followed up with painters to patch and paint the walls, and finishing with Steve's crew installing laminate in the laundry room and carpet in the play area. When they re-installed my washing machine the even took the time to adjust it so that it no longer wobbled when I run a load! Steve at the Potomac, Maryland location was wonderful to work with! He worked with me to obtain samples of flooring he did not normally have in the store and he arranged for installation with wonderful follow-up.
