Update. Still a five star review. My hubby is addicted to their Horchata as it reminds him of his mother's recipe. We've returned many times since our first visit and we have enjoyed every meal. This place is also well-kept and clean. Pleasant wait staff as well. For the people whining about the prices. You get what you pay for. Come on Taco Tuesday if you want a deal. I prefer the high-quality carne asada meat (and all other meats) here at Casa Alvarez over any cheapie street tacos. Putting cheap and/or processed food into your stomach is bad for your health. I was a food nutrition major in college and am knowledgeable about these things. Oh, and the beans at this place are not canned. After cooking meals for 40 years, one develops the ability to discern canned food from freshly prepared. I thought this place would be a great place and hey it had the same last name as me as so I thought I'd give it a shot now I don't know if people around here never had Mexican food before but this was the absolute worst Mexican food I have ever had the wet burrito was very salty not one bit spicy the albóndiga soup was ok but the meat balls seem to be made out of some meat other than beef and no flavor when I asked they said it was pork and beef seem to be more pork the enchiladas and tacos just disappointing aside from that the service from one of the lady's here older lady rolled her eyes and looked annoyed that I asked for a refill she came to the table about 3 times the whole time I was there we sat there for 30 min before they took our order I'm just very disappointed with this place won't be coming back read more

Pretty solid Mexican restaurant. We like to order the lunch special carnitas burritos. It comes with beans,rice, chips and guac for about $11. I have had their tacos and those are good too. The reason for 4 stars is sometimes the food is inconsistent. Most of the time the food is spot on but every so often the beans are flat or something just tastes off. But that is not too often. There is lots of seating and the service is pretty good but parking can be a bit of a challenge at times. All in all I recommend it. read more

Decent Mexican food with very good service. We were started off with complimentary warm tortilla chips and salsa. Our waiter brought us more chips and salsa when he noticed we had finished them. I've tried a couple of dishes here and my favorite was the beef taquitos. The three taquitos are accompanied by refried beans topped with cheese, rice, sour creme and guacamole. I enjoyed the crunchy taquitos. I was not crazy about their guacamole and offered it to my husband, who liked it. I guess I am picky. Staff came by to ask us how we were doing. Casa Alvarez is probably the only real sit-down Mexican restaurant in Rowland Heights. I had been here once before and had their shrimp enchiladas which I thought were good. So we decided to hit up this place for Cinco de Mayo because we couldn't think of any other Mexican joints nearby serving beer. I even remembered seeing Casa Alvarez coupons in the Penny Saver (no, I don't regularly look through the Penny Saver...) so when I looked, I found a coupon for buy one combination plate get one half off. Instead of giving me props, my friend made fun of me for even knowing what's in the Penny Saver! So we got there and got our pitcher of beer; it's a pretty sweet deal for $8.50. As for my combination plate, I got the 3 item chile relleno, pork tamal, and cheese enchilada combo. Meatball soup, which was mediocre preceded my plate. When my plate came out, it was just one big pile of red cheesy mess and I had no idea what was what. When I made sense of the madness, I found that the chile relleno was easily the worst and my friend agreed. The batter was all floury and soggy and the chili pepper had no flavor. The rest were average at best. Overall, the food was quite a disappointment compared to my previous visit. I will say Casa Alvarez has excellent service though; both times I've been here, I was quite impressed by it. After coming here for a few years I would have to say the service and food has gone down hill while the prices have climbed. My main reason for updating my original review is the waitresses tend to hide in the back kitchen area trying to avoid you at all costs. You might get a refill on your tea if you're lucky. So I have had some good experiences here, but lately the bad has outweighed the good. My last visit there was a soccer game on and the waitresses were mostly huddled in the back watching the game on a small TV. Couldn't get a refill. The service was not the straw that broke the camel's back however. I hate under-cooked Chile rellenos. The last time I came here I got a Chile relleno that was under-cooked. Solid cold cheese and lots of seeds; not good in my opinion. I really hoped that the quality of food and service would have stayed elevated over the years but sadly that has not been the case. Visited this place while travelling to the area for business. I'm from Texas so I'm a bit used to authentically good Mexican food. This is neither good nor authentic Mexican food. I ordered a taco salad and it was not good. Not even close. The meat was burnt, hard and had absolutely no taste to it (no seasoning). I doubt it was even authentic fajita skirt steak. Casa Alvarez is by far one of my favorite restaurants, especially in the area! It is conveniently located next to starter brothers and right down the street from my house. There food is very well priced, and staff is always friendly. My favorite dishes are the carnitas, the two burrito special, and the tortilla soup. My family comes here almost once a week, and it hits the spot every time. They have endless chips a salsa, and a soup or salad is included with most meals. They recently updated their menu and interior, and are open until 9. Come give it a try and you won't be disappointed. read more

I don't even know where to start with this one. First off, I LOVE Mexican food and have been to quite a few places. However, this restaurant disappoints in both food and service. Food: Ordered a combo plate with chile relleno, taco, and enchilada. Everything tasted BLEH. not good. Nothing tasted fresh. It tasted as if the sauces came from cans and even the tacos were comparable to what I would expect from Taco Bell. Service: Service was an even big disaster. Super slow service and took what felt like decades to order, receive our check, and get our change. We were even tempted to walk out since it took THAT long. It's still not very good.... My wet burrito wasn't that delicious Chicken inside was very dry with no flavor. Their salsa is way to many tomatoes. Most places I've been to, the salsa is more liquefied and tastier. but their salsa wasn't that great. Chips for the salsa are very dry and tasteless. You could get better chips out of the bag at your grocery store. The service was terrible. Another time we went which was Mother's Day they were not prepared for the crowd.. We kept asking how long the wait was. and everytime we asked it was an hour. I guess that their clocks don't move at that place. There's better places in town to spend my money. Been coming here since i was a freshmen at Rowland; haha! i used to have these crazy cravings, i'll persuade one of my friends to go with me to casa (by paying for their food) and we would've walked there, which took us about 15 minutes. By the time we got there, we usually ate the entire basket of complimentary tortilla chips + salsa before our food arrived because we were famished. The service is hit or miss, usually just OK, once in a while they are good. The food must be mostly canned/frozen though. Nothing tastes fresh to me, though the salsa and chips are pretty good. I think this is a family place and I know they treat you like family. We call it our "Little Mexican Food Place." The service is always great and they will gladly do it your way if you want something substituted. For example, the wife always gets the Enchilada de Carnitas but has them put the red sauce on it as she doesn't like the green sauce it would normally come with. I'm hooked on the Chimichanga lately but ask for rice inside instead of beans. No problem for them. If you don't know what you want just try one of the combos. They come with rice and beans. Personally, I'm not fond of the tamal but other people love them and you can get enchiladas, tacos, or chili rellenos as other choices for the combo. The salsa is great, and fresh. Varies in heat from day to day. The chips that go with it are very good. They have menudo, and it is good. I love the chili colorado in any of the many forms they serve it. They have a shrimp with mushrooms in a cream sauce that is more French than Mexican and is wonderful. Their green sauce was tasty. The pork tasted like old cat food. I asked for over medium eggs, they made 'em over easy. The smell of raw egg yolk had me gagging. Good things: their salsa for the chips is really good and the place is so empty the service was super fast. (Not sure if it being so empty is a good thing, but when you're in a hurry to eat lunch it's great) If I ever come back I'm sticking with good ol' cheese enchiladas.... New to the neighborhood and decided to try Casa Alvarez. Wow !! Clean, fast service, great people and delicious food. A lot of people were arriving around 6pm on a Friday night and there were a lot of regulars. Servers new most of the customers by first name. Food came out quick and made to order. Sopes was delicious. Crispy edges and a bit chewy just the way I like it. Perfect base for all the toppings. Flautas were crispy and beef filling was flavorful but was a little clumped up. Meaning, when you took a bite, the beef wouldn't separate. Deep fried ice cream was so good BUT the outter crust didn't hold up. Once you put your spoon in, it fell apart. Parking is easy and inside is clean. Now is see why there are so many regulars. Time to get on there level. read more

I liked it. I had the assortment of enchiladas: 1 beef, chicken, and cheese. My favorite was the cheese then the chicken. Comes with the usual rice, beans, and sour cream. The sizes are hearty and I had enough leftover for lunch the next day. The chips and salsa before the meal filled me up. I couldn't stop crunching. The restaurant itself is nothing special. The lighting is bad...as in kind of fluorescent and reminded me of the 70's or 80's with the decor. The place was pretty busy for a Friday night, but we didn't have to wait long to be seated. Waitress should've stopped by to see how we were doing as it was a little annoying trying to flag some random person down to get more drinks and our check. Here's a tip for how to save some time when service is slow: When they bring the check...say "hold on and you can take it"...check quickly to make sure the bill is correct then give them your money or credit card right away. Saves the time from you getting the check and them never returning to get your payment. I hate that! Parking: plenty available in private lot. read more

Worst service! Normally I don't blast restaurants but I took my mom here for breakfast and waited almost a hour for food and got nothing. Place is located in a strip mall adjacent to a Stater Bros. Parking can be a pain. When we arrived we were greeted promptly and seated. The space is clean and the staff as a whole were very friendly and attentive. We ordered the red/green chilaquiles which came with refried bean and potatoes. Also, it came with two eggs cooked to your liking. I liked the green ones. The sauce was decent and the potatoes were very good. The beans unfortunately tasted like they were from the can. The texture seemed off and taste seemed off. For those of you who have had Rosarita beans once in your life you'll know what I mean. My wife liked the red chilaquiles but she felt the sauce was a bit too thick. All in all it was a good experience. I ordered 2 chicken Soups the vegetables were sour meaning they gave us rotten veggies they tried to mask the sour taste with an intense amount of oregano the potatoes were so hard I had to use a knife to cut it super gross the meat looked boarder line rotten. read more

Casa Alvarez has long been a Rowland Heights favorite. Lately I've found that it has been sold by the Alvarez family. The new owner still has the great varied menu, but some things have changed. The beans and rice which accompany most meals are really not very good. The Beans are just sad and the rice has little flavor and is bland. Service is still good. If you call for take out, they usually have it ready within 15 .to 20 min after the call and order will be properly packed. Generally the food is great, but those beans OMG ! read more
