Castello is in my opinion the best restaurant in Danbury. It is a classic Italian dining experience. The food is always fresh, perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. We went here last night for Valentine's Day dinner. Food: Reasonable portions. I have a small appetite and was able to finish my first plate at an Italian restaurant, ever. This might be a con for some people. The food tasted fresh and well-prepared. The dipping cheese/butter with the bread was tasty. Dessert was good as well. Service: Now, I'm torn because I could tell a lot of extra family members were working that night. It was stressful to sit so close to the kitchen because you could feel their pain. They definitely weren't used to being so busy. Our 6:30 dinner for two ended at 8:30. I had no problem waiting because it was a "holiday", but we felt slightly ignored, and the food took an hour to come out. Overall: I would come back, just on a week night. There wasn't any tableside caesar salad or olives as stated before. Women were promised complimentary roses per the holiday, but that never happened either. read more

This is one of my very favorite restaurants. The atmosphere makes me feel like home. The staff is kind and welcoming and the food is seasoned and cooked to perfection. This was the perfect restaurant for a dinner with friends. Extremely welcoming staff, lovely classic Italian setting, a wonderful menu and excellent service. We each had one of the specials --branzino, stuffed chicken breast, seafood risotto and pork chop--and we very pleased. I'm not usually the type to leave reviews for a restaurant but for this I had to. My girlfriend and I made reservations for Castello's on Valentine's Day. Overall it was a nice looking place. I couldn't help but notice half of the employees just looked absolutely lost like they had no idea what was going on. When we were seated we didn't even get menus. Someone eventually came over and asked if we wanted drinks to start off, mind you we still had no menus. So, I asked if we could have some. He then proceeded to grab drink menus, but still no good menus. We told him we needed a minute to check out the drink menu. This guy never came back after that. Once the new guy showed up we asked him for food menus which he then fumbled around to get. Then I asked for a simple whiskey and coke and the waiter didn't even seem to know what I was asking for and had to make sure they even sold whiskey. After we received our drinks we placed our food orders. About 15 minutes go by, and the same waiter comes over and asks if we're ready to place our food orders yet. Like I said, we had just placed them about 15 minutes prior. So we tell him that and he's utterly surprised even though he was the one who took the order. He then proceeds to walk over to the computer and starts talking to another employee as he was looking through his notepad. This was giving us the idea that he never put our orders in when we gave them to him originally. After some time our food FINALLY arrives after all this nonsense. The food was okay and definitely didn't make up for all the confusion/mistakes we experienced. Also, there was a terrible draft in the restaurant the entire time and my girlfriend even had to put her jacket back on because it was so cold in our section of the restaurant. I just wanted to provide a nice Valentine's Day experience for us and this place definitely did not deliver. Not once was there a "how is everything", "is there anything else I can get for you", "would you like some dessert." Nothing. I don't plan on ever returning here again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The one saving grace was the gentlemen who worked there who gave her a rose and wished us a good night. The experience at Castello Restaurant was abysmal. We arrived on time for a 7pm reservation and were told our table would be ready in a few minutes. Which phrase remained the hostess' refrain until we were finally seated at 8:10pm. No one came to take a drink/appetizer/dinner order until 8:35pm and even that was only because a member of our party went to the hostess and asked if we were ever going to be visited by a waiter. When the bread basket and our drinks arrived at about 9pm, half of the bread was soggy from having water spilled on it. Given the lack of service, we placed our order for appetizers and dinner at the same time which turned out to be a good thing as no one stopped by to inquire as to whether the appetizer was satisfactory or whether anyone in our party would perhaps care for another glass of wine. The busboy did bring us a second (dry) basket of bread when we flagged him down. So we sat at the table with zero service and empty wine glasses until our dinners arrived at 10pm. As far as the food goes, it was okay to good without being great. It was certainly not worth the wait. Once we got the basket of dry bread, we found the mini garlic sticks tasty and very good. The regular bread was dry and just shy of burnt. We shared an appetizer of calamari. The batter was light and crisp. It was mostly the rings of calamari and only two tentacles pieces. The dipping marinara was bland without a single slice of sauteed garlic to brighten it up. One order of chicken francese was tender and 'very excellently done'. An order of veal saltimbocca was 'okay' (the sauce had absolutely no flavor other than salt). An order of linguini with white clam sauce was 'nice'. An order of rigatoni bolgnese was 'fine'. We were passed from our original waiter (tall, heavy set, medium dark hair) who was very busy table hopping and schmoozing to a second waiter (tall, thin, light hair glasses) when our food came out. He immediately noticed the empty wine glasses and saw to it that they were replenished before we had finished our meals. Good job there. The second waiter apologized for the interminable wait to be seated and for the other waiter not keeping up with our table (sorta). They did take 20% off the bill for botching everything so badly, but seriously, by then it was too late. Not a one of us will ever agree to dine there again because the overall experience was so lousy. As an aside, the prices were reasonable and the portion sizes were just right. As a further aside, what is wrong with the owners that they do not provide fluorescent hoodies with the restaurant name on them to the valets who run back and forth across North Street all night long? Have they never thought for even a millisecond how invisible these guys are? Hoodies are $10 apiece and the name is another $2. read more

One of our fav. local places for a Saturday eve. or special occasion. The service is very European- attentive. My favorites are the fresh sea bass and risotto dishes. I like how the waiters de-bone the fish at your table side. My family raves about the veal. Try the baked clams. They are perfectly seasoned and delish. The presentation of all of their dishes is beautiful and the desserts are so good that we have even stopped there to order them after leaving other restaurants. Fantastic cannoli. I went here with my wife for the first time last week. It was a little tricky getting into the parking lot but worth it. The atmosphere was really nice. They treated us lie we were royalty. The food is good and the ambiance is nice. However I made the mistake of ordering a decaf americano coffee. Even though we had the discussion that I cannot tolerate caffeine the waiter brought a espresso coffee. I asked him if he was sure it was decaf and he assured me it was. Unfortunately he was wrong. This was very high caffeinated coffee. After drinking I started to get the shakes. I don't ever drink any caffeinated beverages so I am very sensitive to caffeine. I usually don't order coffee at a restaurant because I cant tolerate it if the restaurant screws up. I notified the manager of the mistake and he showed me that they have decaf espresso coffee. Unfortunately that is not what the waiter used. I was up all night and I couldn't sleep. I am very disappointed in the restaurant. If you cannot drink regular coffee, don't order decaf at this restaurant. It can be a very unpleasant experience that you will regret. read more

Went there for Valentines Day dinner. We did not have a reservation but it was early & there were plenty of tables. Still have no idea who our waiter was since we had to grab several just to get waited on or even told the specials. Bread was tasteless but food was descent but a little pricey. My unfinished glass of wine was literally taken from the table while a pleasant young man did happen to come over to show us the dessert table. Not one person came over to ask us about the food or if we needed anything. Took over a half hour to get the check. My husband & I enjoy eating out & I have never felt a reason to give a bad review to any but this restaurant. This was by far the worst service I have ever received. I had previously reviewed this restaurant when it first opened and gave it 5 stars. At that time Kenny was running the front of the restaurant. What a shame he left. It is now being run by young kids (the owner and chefs) children. The service is mediocre at best. I had to ask 4 times for a water refill. We ordered an over $100 bottle of wine and they never came to pour the wine again. The menu was just reduced to a basic boring Italian standard menu. One of there signature dishes shrimp castello is not even there?? How do you take off your signature appetizer. You can tell if you went to Castellos early on (when Kenny was there) that my critiquing of this restaurant is beyond accurate because the restaurant was full and now it has 4 cars there on a Saturday night. If the owner or his kids read there reviews please fix this. Your bar area needs new furniture so people can also use the bar/lounge. Right now it has childrens size chairs that a normal size person can not fit in. So sad to me because the chef is excellent and I don't understand why you are not doing anything about this. With some small changes, an adult running the dining room that pays attention to service and interacting with the customers, some decorative changes, your old menu and specials(which were all cooked fabulously since the chef and owner is still here) you would be back to your former glory. read more
