Excellent Food, we had a great waiter but price was a little high. However, we will go again next time we are in town.

We have eaten here several times when in town and have always had a pleasant experience. The wait staff is welcoming whether the place is packed or it's just a few diners. It's an established restaurant enjoyed by locals or travelers, is our observation. The meals are "down home" and have always been hot and yummy. We miss the salad bar, but their veggie sides are delicious. As an RN, I'm serious about cleanliness and this also gets high marks. Some people have given poor reviews, but I advise checking it out yourself. read more

This place has a good variety on the menu. A little high priced for the quantity of helpings. The catfish plate came with fries and a salad bar. Due to Covid19, your choice is salad or cole slaw. It's been a few years since I last ate at the Catfish Haven and as I remember the food was very good, decided to give it a try. How times have changed! I always ordered the sampler plate of fish, oysters, frog legs and stuffed crab, so I gave it a try. As mentioned in other reviews, they were heavy on the breading and everything was overcooked. There was nothing wrong with the flavor of the breading, it was just too thick and fried too long, especially the oysters. The breading was very hard and the oyster was almost dry from having been fried excessively. The stuffed crab was dry and somewhat mealy; it was edible but that's all I can say. The salad bar was okay but lackluster, despite a decent amount of ingredients. The vegetables were overcooked but I can overlook that as the use of a steam table almost insures that will be the case. This restaurant has been in business for years and I suspect it will endure for more. If you're not picky about your food and are hungry for seafood, you might enjoy eating here as the portions are generous. Service was acceptable, too. In summary, it's not great food, not bad food, just somewhere in the middle. Unfortunately, it's not good enough to merit a return. read more

We are back and this time I had the schnitzel which was fantastic. Debbie our server was awesome. We try to make it out here when we are in town. The food was delicious. I liked the salad bar and fried okra. The onion rings were homemade just the way I like them. The service was excellent. A bit off of the center of town for Fredericksburg, but is it worthy of an extra mile drive, absolutely! Read the reviews on this place and thought there is no place like it that could be possibly that good, that affordable and serve enough food so that when I left I was still taking a pound or two of leftovers home. Three people in our party, we all order different things from the cat fish plate, to the patty melt, two chicken fingers and were rewarded with complementary sides of their fried okra and beans. Both of the sides were off the hook! Our food was fresh, delicious, and more than we could ever hope to eat. If you get the sampler platter, make sure you have four Competition level hungry folks in your party. Our waiters and waitresses were right on their game and we never went without a refill on our drinks. They were very informative, personable and made our visit to their location thoroughly enjoyable. CLOSED ON SUNDAYS!! We hadn't been here in several years. But in the past, we loved it. So we drove an hour and a half one way only to find the place closed. Whereas normally we enjoy our food at this place, the last time both my wife and I were really disappointed. My wife's flounder was partly undercooked and tasteless. Most of my catfish was quite undercooked and outright squishy. That squishy that I was afraid to eat. Well, I did eat it and I had no problems afterwards, but I really didn't enjoyed it. WHA??? The other review for Catfish Haven is waaay off the mark. This is a really good fish place. really really good. Their hushpuppies are some of the best around and their all you can eat deal is super. My dad goes here and eats an embarrassing quantity of fish. Oh, and their beans are really good too, and I believe, last I checked, they are all you can eat too. The portions of fish on their plates are generous too. I have never felt shorted in any way eating here. Waitstaff is friendly, but some times, when my dad is involved, I feel like they are a little sluggish on the fish refills. That's ok, my dad is patient. We should just tell them to go ahead and keep bringing the fish, as they aren't going to win. He will wait for as long as it takes, and keep eating til he is satisfied. It's easy to get caught up in one of the many, many cafes and restaurants on Main Street in Fredericksburg, especially when that's where you'll spend most of your time . . . but take the time to walk to the far end of West Main Street and getcha' some Catfish Haven! The fried catfish is battered and fried just right: crisp, lightly seasoned batter and moist, firm catfish. MMMMmmmm! The fried oysters had just a hint of heat in its batter - cayenne? - but were again, perfectly battered and fried. The grilled catfish was firm, seasoned just right and came on a generous bed of rice. The (large) Country Fried Steak was HUGE and DELICIOUS. It came on its own plate, smothered in white gravy and battered and fried the way CFS is supposed to be. The hush puppies were taaaaaaasty! Simple, true, real hush puppies. Cornbread mix/cornmeal, onion, salt, pepper and down home-magic. Good grief... And let's not forget to talk about their Salad Bar. A visit to the salad bar comes with your meal - TAKE. ADVANTAGE. Crisp greens, perfectly hard boiled and chopped eggs, a variety of veggies, darn good coleslaw and then . . . THE HOT SIDE: fried okra, green beans (needed a little salt), fried okra, pinto beans, and did I mention the fried okra?! The service is friendly, the food comes out hot and fast and there's plenty of parking and seating. We WILL be back! read more

After spending so much time in the touristy parts of F'burg, Catfish Haven came as a real shock to the senses. I was a little skeptical when we walked in just because the appearance of the interior alone was so drastically different from every other place we'd been to on Main Street. This is clearly a place where the locals go to eat to avoid the tourists since everyone else in the restaurant while we were there was a regular. I think our waitress knew literally every single other person in that restaurant as I saw her stop to speak with all of them at least once, even the tables she wasn't working. It didn't affect our service, though, so it was fine. For the most part, this place has really standard country style cooking. I got one of the specials that night, chicken fried ribeye, and my husband got the all-you-can-eat seafood platter. Both meals came with access to the salad bar, which they seemed to advertise as something special but it looked pretty average to me. They did have hot items at one end like fried okra and steamed green beans, but otherwise nothing too terribly exciting. Our entrees were pretty good, and the portions were HUGE. My steak could have easily fed three hungry people with probably a little leftover. I felt guilty as I hardly made a dent in it even though it was tasty. My husband seemed to enjoy his seafood platter, but I was so preoccupied with trying to eat even a quarter of the food on my plate that I didn't sample any from his. Needless to say, we did not have any room for dessert. Altogether, this place was a solid three star establishment. The service, food, and ambiance were all squarely "A-OK". If you want to get away from the tourists and have a simple dinner with no frills, this would be a great place to try. read more

We decided to try Catfish Haven after reading the yelp reviews. Inside, we noticed a salad bar in the middle as you walk in and tables on either side of this area. I'm confused about one yelper's complaint concerning the salad bar being too far to walk. We were greeted immediately by our waitress who took our drink order. She came back shortly to take our food order. One thing we never do is go into a restaurant specializing in seafood and order a steak. I ordered the combo of fried catfish and oysters. My wife ordered the fried catfish. We were given a salad bowl and two other small bowls. The salad bowl is for salad. Duh! The other two bowls are used for the hot veggies they had next to the salad bar (if desired). Our food came out very quickly. The catfish was very good and cooked perfectly crisp. One could tell the catfish was farm raised because it didn't have the muddy taste like wild catfish. The service was very good as well. If and when we return to Fredericksburg, this will be a place we would definitely visit again. read more

A trip to salad bar was listed as a side however the restaurant had the bar closed and instead served a house salad which was unusually small and not-so-fresh. I don't know how this place has so many good reviews. I had a hankering for fried catfish so we stopped by, two adults and two Tweens. I had the 4 piece catfish plate and the wife had the all you can eat catfish and shrimp. Kids had a burger and chicken Caesar salad. My four pieces of catfish were breaded so thickly at least half of the weight of each piece was breading and cooked to a mahogany brown, about as crunchy as a carrot. My wife didn't even finish her first plate of catfish and I only barely did. Her "steamed" shrimp were served cold. The Caesar salad was lettuce, chicken strips and bottled Caesar dressing, period. My daughter didn't finish her hamburger because she said it was super greasy, plus the bun was dripping with butter. Our server was very friendly and prompt though, and the salad bar and beans and okra were quite good. The hush puppies were good too. Just don't order the catfish flavored fried breading, maybe stick with the grilled fish so they can't hide it inside anything. read more

Sorry to say I had a terrible experience . The salad was just fine when I took a bite of my catfish it was nothing but soft mush !!!!! That turned me off and my next bite was no better The rude waitress asked was it ok and I said no and explained she asked would you like me to make you another ? My stomach already turned so I declined So scared they might have to remove the catfish off the check she was adamant about bringing me more catfish. Not too good. If I had not ordered the shrimp I would nt have known what they were. Not even half as long as my thumb covered with more breading than shrimp meat. Catfish was skinny and almost tasteless. My wife and I both agreed old grease was used to fry both the shrimp & the catfish. We won't be going back there again. Wasted money. read more

Hey everyone, If you love your catfish, don't go here. Their catfish tasted like dirty pond water. Also the shrimp was bland/no flavor (unless you soaked it in Lemon Juice) and the corn on the cob was over cooked. They did have pretty good okra, but their tater-tots tasted like fish and their tarter sauce had very little flavor. Please don't waste your time and money on this one! read more

This is the best home cooking I have had in a long time. 4 people in our party all ordered different meals and they were ALL sooo good! Catfish, steak fingers, grilled chicken salad, shrimp and frog legs. Amazing!! Our meals came with salad bar !! The salad bar was fresh and had large variety, including peaches and cottage cheese, the best pinto beans, fried okra, and cooked cabbage with bacon, all on the salad bar! So glad we went here. We went for an early dinner, we were the only customers in the restaurant. We both ordered the 3 piece catfish dinner with fries, our meal came out pretty fast and it was hot. That's the only good thing about the meal. Salad bar is a sad thing, fried okra that is served on the salad bar is room temperature. We are positive that the fried catfish we ordered was not catfish, we could tell by the texture. Really disappointed in our meal read more

Ate here last Friday night for the first time. A pretty good experience. The all you can eat catfish and shrimp were hot and tasty. The catfish fillets were more like catfish fingers, nice and meaty, which was good. Everything was cooked well and lightly breaded. The salad bar had fried okra, black eye peas and corn on the cob all of which was good as well. Our server was polite and very prompt. She brought refills as requested in a timely manner. I wish this place was closer to SA because the deals are GREAT!! All-U-Can-Eat fried catfish for $12!! Pollack is $11--say what?!?! When we went it was between meal hours and we kind of freaked out there was no one in the parking lot. Upon entering, there were a few tables that had guests (wonder where their cars were...), and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. We tucked in and ordered the fried pickles (chips, NOT spears, yay!) for an app. They took a little bit to come out, but when they did, they were piping hot and oh-so delish!! The ranch dressing served with them was surprisingly good--not too thick or too thin. With a few sprinkles of pepper, I was good to go! I ordered the grilled flounder with lemon pepper and it was pretty good. Had I not gone fried app, I'd have gotten fried fish. Apparently my grilled item slowed down my bf getting his catfish (which was really tasty, btw), but again, everything was hot and fresh. The rice for my side was just average. Baked potato was simple with only cheese and sour cream, but I did really appreciate they had been kept warm properly and you could still eat the skin. Hushpuppies would have been better had I eaten them right when we got our plates, but even a little cool had good flavor. They have this neat "21-item" salad and sides bar that comes with every meal where you can choose what to pair with your dinner. I made a nice little salad (they use a romaine/cabbage/carrot mix) and topped it with my choice of "fanicer" veggies. They have fried okra on the sides bar, and it was definitely solid. Would again have been better had we gotten it straight from the fryer, but still had a good breading. Cole slaw was pretty good too. The bf liked the corn, and I enjoyed the beans... although I did carefully avoid the bacon they were cooked in (but mmmm... bacon flavoring). Dessert menu was short and sweet, so we decided on a slice of Tootie Pie Co. buttermilk pie to take home. Even after a day in the fridge at our place, it was good enough to make you slap yo' mama. The little dollop of whipped cream on the side was a nice complement. Made me wish I'd made a cup o' joe to go with, and I had to fight my man off for the last few bites. If you're ever in Fredericksburg, I highly recommend driving all the way to the end of Main St and away from the tourist-filled downtown for this reasonably priced gem. read more

It's a rare occasion that you come across a place and every single thing you eat there is out of this world! A remodeled church into restaurant, God surely blessed this southern food.
