Great cannolis! They fill them fresh at the time you order so that the cannoli shells don't get mushy. (The other cannoli places around in SF have them prefilled, and the crust gets soggy.). Came here on a Sunday afternoon. This cafe is located right next to Bank of America in the corner of that intersection. This was my second stop into Cavalli for a cannoli. It was just as good the second time! This is a must stop when you're in North Beach in San Fran! The owner is from Italy and was so kind. He asked me about my most recent trip to Italy and told me all about his favorite places to eat when he's there. The little cafe is quaint and small. The owner fills the cannoli's to order. It doesn't get better than that!!! We were at another restaurant in Little Italy for dinner and the server told us to come here for Tiramisu instead of ordering from him. I'm not a fan of tiramisu but my parents said it's the best they've ever had. They ended up getting an additional piece to go. They said it was to die for! What a great little cafe in North Beach. If you're looking for great hot cannolis and fresh tiramisu then this little hidden gem is the spot for you. The decor is very sleek and modern. It is clean and there's free WiFi. Seating is limited, but the ambience is welcoming. The coffee here is also not so bad. I had the affogato and you usually can't find that at a regular coffee shop. So I was quite thrilled and amazed at the quality of the affogato. It's a great place to have a one on one with a friend, but I wouldn't recommend huge crowds. We literally flew into SF, checked into our hotel in the Financial District, and everyone was starving for brunch. So what do I do? Of course I check my Yelp bookmarks and Cavalli Cafe is the closest. This place is on the edge of Chinatown and North Beach. Hidden little place. We walk in and it's almost empty. About six table. Place is nicely decorated for being on the edge of Chinatown. They do have an upstairs too but didn't check it out. So a woman helped us out. You basically order and pay at the counter and they bring your food. I got a double cappuccino and a ham and cheese croissant. Croissant was so fresh. Light and fluffy with thinly sliced ham and cheese. So good and the cappuccino hit the spot. Perfect brunch. My son got the Prosciutto & fresh mozzarella omelette. He thought it was so good. Gobbled it up. He raved about his black coffee too cause they got a horrible cup of coffee at the airport. He was very impressed. My daughter and wife split a panini with Prosciutto, fresh mozzarella & fresh tomatoes. All I heard was the bread was so fresh and soft then it was gone. They just loved it. Very good. So I'm in an Italian cafe that has desserts and I can't pass up the fresh Cannolis. So I got one. We shared and boy was it good. Freshly made. Prefect. Not to sweet but nice and creamy. Loved it. I talked to the owner who's name is Santo and he was so nice. He said he's been here for 11 years. How could I miss this place. Thanks again to Yelp. Whoever took over this place has destroyed the most perfect cannoli ever. In 2021, I ate the most gorgeous cannolo at this little place--perfectly crisp pastry shell stuffed with lightly sweetened imported ricotta, garnished with beautiful, al dente jewels of citrus peel. The thing I was served a few weeks ago was sodden with overly sweetened ricotta that was thick with powdered sugar. It was full of chocolate chips on one side and pistachios on the other with a tasteless, brown lump of mushy citrus peel on top, adding insult to injury. I notice the café has a new neon sign proclaiming "LEAVE THE GUN TAKE THE CANNOLI". If only the cannoli were good enough to warrant the buzz. So disappointing. read more

This place use to be my favorite place for tiramisu and every time I pass by Chinatown I mostly will stop by and get a piece home. But this time really disappointed me. The taste, the quality went down from 5stars to 1 star. Last Friday 1/29 i dropped by this cafe and get a piece tiramisu home. On my half way to home on bus I see water on the seat and it dripping more and more water out. The brown water was out from my tiramisu bag. I start to eat the tiramisu right away the time I get home. Very disappointed. It nothing taste like the one I ordered before. Water soaked in the cake, I don't taste any sweetness or espresso in this cake, it taste weird, nasty, and ugly on this piece of tiramisu. Before every time I feel not enough and want more but this time I couldn't finish it, after two bites I couldn't swallow anymore and had to throw it away. Is the chief change? Sorry to have to do this, but I am reducing my stars because this is a cafe that provides internet but NO outlets for customers with computers. Even two outlets for the early birds to fight over would have been reasonable. Or, outlets and no internet. This blows. I'm a local. I used to come upstairs and do work for hours, even order two of my three meals here in a day and copious amounts of caffeine, running across the street to accommodate their cash only policy. However, I no longer can enjoy my long hours here - even if the wifi is free. Heck, charge me for wifi if you have to and I would pay to sit and eat and drink your delishishness but depriving my laptop of juice is a deal-breaker. My laptop and I planned to shut you down every-night this week. Your coffee was going to remember me. Now, I have to take my business somewhere else. I am so very sad about this since you are far enough away from home, but close enough to walk. I used to hide in a corner upstairs and plug in but now, it's over - every outlet is covered - shame. Please let me know if they uncover one and I will make sure it's mine. I went to Cavalli and had a great chai, and the Canolli OMG... Better than any i had when I lived in New York, Better than the famous Enrico's in in North Beach 1970's or any Italian Bakery in San Francisco or East Bay also. I have to say Built in food perfection construction to a masterpiece of Culinary Delighted Beauty and layered flavors in Fabulous expertise, design, aromatic tantalizing taste. Pistacios, Chocholate Chips are just the beginning. The filling Not too sweet but perfection in flavor, just the right flavored enhanced sweetness and layered dried fruit. The canolli Shell dusted sweetly baked/ fried ( not sure which) and crispy flavored (not soggy or tasteless) crunchy and lightly crisp and very tasty by itself. The orange sauce- demi reduction was perfect balance of sweetened and aromatically captured orange glazed essence in a drizzled dreammy addition, The candied reduced glazed Orange slices and twists of citrus accompanied, and complimented the dark chocolate drizzle.Then dusted powder sugar and a honey type sauce . I thought I died and went to Italian Heaven. I have never been so impressed by presentation, time , effort, and image matched the fabulous flavors and back to the matched aticipation when seen the picture perfect desert that your presented with back to how it tasted like a unforgetable beautiful dream that lingers and captured in your heart. We made our way to this place after I pulled it up on yelp and realized I had not tried it. I've tried cannoli's at the two other signature places on the street but I like how this place makes the cannoli's fresh in front of you instead of them sitting in a display case. Admittedly, most cannoli's taste similar to me and at $5 a pop these are a tad pricey for what they are. This is the kind of place that is so easy to find in New York or Boston but a very rare animal in the West Coast. First of all, the majority of San Franciscans don't seem to get that Cannoli are not supposed to be purchased from a bakery refrigerator case. The whole point of a cannoli is the contrast of a crisp shell filled at the very moment you order it with a delicate but intense ricotta cheese filling. It is very unfortunate that some ignorant potential customers awkwardly depart when they're told by the owner, a friendly and chatty first generation immigrant from Italy's Amalfi Coast, that he will make their cannoli. Don't make this mistake! The cannoli (available in two sizes) are as fantastic as any you will try in Southern Italy or Brooklyn. The tiramisu is delicious and so is the panna cotta and I don't get too excited about panna cotta. All of this can be washed down with excellent hard-to-find Danesi coffee which the owner imports from Rome. The place is less ornate than a lot of North Beach cafes but this one is squarely about the food and the coffee and should not be overlooked. read more

In my fantasy of owning a nice Italian coffee shop someday, I basically imagine Cavalli Cafe. The place is well furnished and styled while maintaining a muted and subtle experience. There is no loud music blaring overhead but you can hear idle chatter of people enjoying an amazing cappuccino. All the ingredients here clearly are sourced from the best purveyors, which accounts for the slightly higher prices. They now do amazing panini sandwiches and breakfast. I love coming here to read a book or my iPad. It's also a great place to meet someone for coffee or move the conversation to after a meal. Loved this very unassuming cafe. We peeked in first; then jumped in feet first. We were glad we did. Cafe appears small and narrow, but there's a nice upstairs that can accommodate more people. We received a warm greeting. Housemade desserts include the panna cotta and the cannelloni. We had one of each. A nice brewed cup of coffee with steamed milk. They also serve a tiramisu which looked very yummy. Nice piece of trivia as told to us - A bookstore used to occupy this space. I kind of recall that, but can't be sure. There are black and white photos on the wall depicting the original use of the storefront. This was our last stop on our sidewalk food tour. Great ending to a great foodie experience! We were given a fresh cannoli, which had sweet creamy filling dotted with chocolate chips. Yum! Cavalli also offers tiramisu, chocolate mousse, and panna cotta (which I also LOVE but was too full for 3 hours of food sampling). We sat down with our cannolis and I ordered a shirley temple. They used an Italian syrup (not Torani) and mixed it with Sprite, and it was the best shirley temple I've ever had. The magic is definitely in the syrup.
