So many times I have passed by this place however only first time am going to eat here. As a huge fan of caviar, I'm so excited and cannot wait to try out their signature dishes. Restaurant was high end from both inside and outside, and it has been perfectly judged by the price tag. Many options were provided. Different prix fixe or even the caviar tasting menu. We opted for the caviar tasting, which provided six spoons of caviar upfront and each dish followed with caviar somewhere on the plate as well. My favorite among the six dishes was king crab. One thing that I didn't enjoy much was the whole grain bread, which was a bit hard to bite... Our waiter has been extremely helpful in explaining both food and wine and he even let us try small sips before ordering it. Well deserved the Michelin star. read more

I'd love to give more stars because every bite of food was impeccable, but sadly the service was atrocious. We ordered sparkling wine, he brought sparkling rose and said it paired better. But then he brought us another round of sparkling rose after the next wine course. We asked him to choose wines for us, he charged $250 for 3 glasses each (6 glasses total) and the sparkling rose was a repeat! I would have much rather spent that $250 on one nicer bottle that we actually wanted, I was livid. The final straw was that they didn't even give us the option for dessert. They brought mini madeline cookies and then asked if we wanted "coffee or just the check". The dining room was empty, even though it was before 9 pm, and they clearly just wanted to get out of there. It wasn't our fault that they didn't fill their dining room, and it's not fair that we got punished for it. It really is such a shame, I feel badly for the talented chef. Now, talk about POSH! A GREAT friend of mine (Thanks Astridlana!) insisted for months to take me out for my birthday, and after doing some research, she suggested this place. Now, based on the name, I was immediately sold. I am a DIE HARD caviar fan. If I could eat it by the can, I would! (working on winning the lottery so I can make THAT dream come true!). So...3 months after my birthday, we finally set a date, and that date was last night. In fact, as we were texting each other to coordinate the meet up last night, she even told me that they serve a lychee martini...now, that would make this a double whammy! So we arrived promptly at 8 pm, and got seated in a corner booth by the window. Once seated, I picked up the menu, and the second thing that caught my eyes...foie gras! By that time, I was willing to ask if I could move in! Then the waitress came over, and inquired about beverages, and without hesitation, we both got the lychee martini. And upon arrival, it was definitely a winner. They put sake in it, which gives it such a smooth taste, it's phenomenal! And for our dinner, we got a 4 course meal, paired with either champagne or wine, which I will break down as follows: 1) COURSE #1 - Blue Point Oysters with Scallions. Succulent, nicely presented and VERY refreshing to kick things off. Paired with Champagne which gave it a crisp finish! 2) COURSE #2 - Scallop and Foie Gras Risotto. Perfectly seared scallops, creamy risotto and just enough foie gras to complement the dish! 3) COURSE #3 - Pan seared arctic char with crispy skin over veggies. Our dining experience was sublime. The Select Osetra gave an extraordinary opening. Buttery and slightly briny, I recommend savoring it on its own, then alternating it with the blini and crème fraîche side, and occasionally, a bordeaux white wine. Perfection. We got a 3-course meal. After the shrimp with pesto and nasturtium amuse-bouche, the foie-gras wowed my senses (and my spirit!). It has to be the best foie-gras I have ever had (and I have had a lot). My husband had a king crab, which had a great texture. Our main courses were a wild stripped sea bass and a Long Island duck. Though the sea bass itself was typical, the sauce was very good, the veggies (lobster mushrooms, romanesco, and pearl onions) were excellent, and the crispy skin on top made for a more interesting texture. The duck was magnificent--great texture, not greasy, full-flavored. Desserts were a Campari and a Chocolate cake, which is the bigger star between the two. The chocolate dessert's sweetness level was perfect, and it looked like a modern sculpture to boot. It featured 'shards' of chocolate and meringue stuck on a unique (yes, unique) vanilla ice cream and a kahlua ice cream. The Campari had a complex flavor, a hint of bitterness, with various textures and types of sweetness. I loved the subtle complexity of the various dishes in this meal. There were no assaults of flavor, but there was no lack of flavor either. If you love caviar, this is a must. If you don't love caviar, dining here is a must as well (most of their other dishes do not have caviar in them). The dining room is intimate and beautiful--at lunch time on a Saturday, it was only us in the room overlooking Madison Ave, in a round corner booth (a perfect setting). I've heard that there is a special brunch menu available for $65 on non holidays. Unfortunately that menu was not available to us but it was a blessing in disguise because we were able to experience this venue fully. We opted for the 3 course so we could do a separate caviar tasting (after all this is Caviar Russe). Delicious and worth every bite. They serve it with creme fraiche and mini toast and crepes. Though the lunch tasting was good; you really come here for the caviar. This place can get very expensive. Looking around there were some customers with expensive wine bottles and caviar tastings that range in the 1K +. This is unfortunately out of my price budget and out of most... If on a date or special occasion you can just opt for a glass of Venue Clique and more inexpensive caviar tasting for kicks and giggles if you are not a connoisseur and walk out under $200 for the two of you. read more

They definitely have some consistency issue with the flavors and temperature since some times were better than others. But i also like the quietness and privacy here. For $135 each for a 7 course meal, I'd rather spend that much on my omakase at Nobu. The decor and sense of exclusivity may make the money worth, but I think it was more of the economy downturn that made my friend and I the only patrons on a Saturday night. I felt like Angelina Jolie paying for the entire restaurant, just so I can have my privacy. But the food was truly not that impressive. Out of the 7 courses, perhaps only the caviar was the most memorable. Each dish had a fancy name and I can't remember them. I had better foie gras as well as lamb chop. The spicy mango soup with coconut sorbet was very interesting, but a tang too sweet for me. And the opening dish, tuna tar tar with caviar was bland. They were great with recommendations and just attentive service in general. We got the 5 course tasting menu as most people do. We then followed up with caviar, which DOES not come with the tasting menu. For a party of 2, I highly recommend just 25 mg. Our waiter told us they recommend 50 mg for 2 people. Oysters were lovely too. Now the meal. All the food is good but nothing had me waking away saying I need this again. Some of the flavors are odd and not as balanced as they could be. Michelin star restaurant indeed! Went there for a fabulous dinner 11/25/17, the service, staff and food were excellent. The second you arrive, a nice gentleman greets you at the door, your escorted up to the second floor on the elevator. Right away a gentleman takes your coat and shows you to your table. Once we've sat down we ordered drinks based off the waiters recommendation. He appeared well trained and knowledgeable. Once again, I cannot stop raving about the food to my friends and family. The waiter made great suggestions on what to order and the Chef even came out to describe each detail of every dish we ordered. The view and ambience of this restaurant is one of a kind, it has a very romantic feel to it. Love love love Caviar Russe, it's such a special place and it is the epitome of luxury dining! I am going to begin my review with this statement: Don't even bother. My sister made reservations for the two of us as a celebration - I'd just recently gotten engaged. My sister is pretty punk rock, and though she was dressed formally and had styled her hair nicely, it doesn't change the fact that it's dyed bright colors and cut into a mohawk. The waitress that "greeted" us (I use the term loosely) gave a disgusted expression to my sister and I as we entered the restaurant. She didn't improve her attitude much during the course of the evening. Additionally, as others have mentioned, this restaurant is beyond quiet. You could hear a pin drop. There was only one other table dining when we arrived at approximately 8 PM on a Wednesday night. Despite the waitress's attitude, service was prompt but not pushy. The menu had loads of options, and I was rather hungry, so we went wild ordering appetizers, oysters, caviar, sushi, salad, beat and goat cheese mousse among other things I can't even remember now - which is ultimately the point of this review. The food was absolutely unmemorable and the sweetbreads disgusting - tasting as though they'd been fried in old grease. The best thing at this restaurant was the spicy tuna roll which tasted just the same as most other decent spicy tuna rolls you can get at so many places in the city. I would recommend against this place to any interested party. There are so many wonderful restaurants in New York where you'll enjoy yourself much more and won't have to put up with snobby waitresses. I'll just get to the point. I love this place. I had the lunch special - an appetizer and an entree for $19.95. I had caviar in puff pastry and the chef's choice of sushi. Simple, beautiful and delicious. My lunch mate had the spicy tuna tartare and the smoked salmon with blinis and creme fraiche. The portions were large. I thought it was a great value. I also ordered a taste of caviar on some type of buttered crouton and creme fraiche for $9.00. It was small, but tasty. My only negative/positive comment is that the crouton and creme fraiche overpowered the caviar. Is that possible or am I just a neophyte? Lastly, the small restaurant is a sophisticated and peaceful oasis from the noise and traffic of Madison Avenue. It was fancy, but I felt comfortable. It's highly recommended. read more

The caviar here was perfect. Served as a sampler of three varieties (or you can choose single varietes a la carte). Accompanied with blinis, toast and sliced potatoes rounds, along with creme fraiche and chopped parsley. We had a three course dinner; you can also choose a six-course tasting menu. Very expensive--around $950 with tips for three people. Celebrating a birthday, but this price tag was a first for us. Would I go back? Yeah, maybe, if I was REALLY in the mood for caviar and feeling flush. The dinner was quite good, although not excellent. The setting is nice, but...it's up a flight of stairs from Madison Avenue in midtown. There's an open kitchen, but it's not really visible from the dining room. The service verged on impeccable, but there were a few glitches--most notably, removing plates before everyone in the party was finished. And the menu is a bit strange--in particular, they serve a dish of crispy poached egg topped with caviar. (The egg is breaded and fried after poaching and is pretty amazing.) But on the menu, all it says is, "Egg." Here's the real downside: the maître d'--officious and rude. I asked questions about the size of the caviar portions. How does 25 grams of caviar compare with an ounce? His response was to bring over empty tins to show us the sizes of 25 grams and two larger quantities. We buy caviar for ourselvves at the holidays...we know what an ounce looks like, and we thing that's a nice generous portion, and just wanted to know if 25 grams was equivalent. Simple question. I Googled it, and it's about 23 grams to the ounce. That was the answer I was looking for. He was rude throughout the meal, and struts around the place like it's his own little kingdom. He should be fired if he's an employee, and if he's the owner, he should replace himself with someone more suited to dealing graciously with patrons spending huge amounts of money to eat caviar. Finally, a tip--they serve madeleines with your coffee, so if you order the three-course dinner, you can make all three courses savory, have a more satisfying meal, and go with the cookies a your dessert. read more

This is a review for the pre-packed salmon roe from Caviar Russe that I purchased in the refrigerated section of my local Whole Foods. The price point is fine ($13 or so) but the tin is all but impossible to open. I actually had to call the 800 number for instructions - and was told to "stick a quarter" between the metal crimp and the glass jar. My husband got it open - but wimpy me - could not. Now - finally the jar is open and the lovely looking roe inside? Overly salty and fishy tasting. After a rinse it was better - but I will not be purchasing this again any time soon. This is on the higher end of the one star Michelin restaurants. You better like caviar (more than just petrossian). We had the joy and treat of the chef's tasting menu but also a little bit of everything on the menu and a variety of caviars. It was a special meal. If it's your first time stick with the classics: King Crab, Shigoku Oysters, Blue Fin Toro Tartare, California Sea Urchin, Diver Sea Scallop. Keep your palate happy with the foie gras terrine and kampachi. My only complaint was stuffing myself with the risotto when I should have had more room for kasugo snapper or dry aged rib eye. Ate it all though. FOMO is real. You won't go wrong with over ordering except pain in your wallet. The meal will not stuff you like a White Castle crave case but you will feel like you're dining in a modern castle complete with chandeliers and trap doors. read more

My partner got the smoked salmon and it was unbearably salty. He only ate one piece. I got the 3 course meal for $125 with the tuna sashimi and it was covered in large grains of kosher salt that was so thick it crunched when I would chew the tender fish. For my second course I got the ribeye which was quiet tasty, but it was covered in a reduction sauce that too was overwhelmingly salty! Not enjoyable in the least and not worth the $1000 spent. Will not be going back. I'll stick with Vaucluse from now on. Way classier, cleaner flavors and authentic French cuisine. read more

Inside is gorgeous white and silver decor with a romantic ambiance. The staff was very knowledgable and attentive. I had a sampling of three different caviars, which all were superb. I hesitated before giving 5 stars. But the quality/price of their lunch menu is incredible. I am not a huge fan of the very classy decor, but I guess it fits with the atmosphere and their cuisine... calm and elegant dishes. On top of the caviar which is their flagship ingredient, the sweetbreads on the prix-fixe menu is one of the best dish I ever had. And I can tell you that I dined at Per Se, Alinea, J-G, Daniel and various 3-star restaurants in France. Just for this dish I will be back. read more
