I came with a group of 8 on a Sunday night and it was pretty empty. The ambiance and decor is very warm and cozy. The menu had several options for sandwiches, burritos, and appetizers. I wish they had a larger drink selection but that's ok. The sandwiches are definitely on the larger side. Many of us opted to share and order appetizers as well. The onion rings as appetizer are delicious and crunchy. I ordered the Barbacoa and it was very flavorful. It's decently priced at $10-12 per sandwich/burrito. Definitely give it a try if you're ever in the area. read more

My favorite lunch spot in the area. I have had both the Southern Fried Chicken Cemitas and the Southern Fried Chicken Burrito. Both are excellent and the portions are huge! I do feel like it is slightly overpriced, but it is hard to find great food in this area so I will keep coming back and ordering on seamless. read more

If you're looking for something other than traditional Mexican food, this place may be great, but in general the place was just OK. The staff here are wonderful, super friendly and helpful, the food though was only ok. We had margaritas, the tater tots with queso, and tacos (carnitas, barbacoa, fried chicken, & chicken tinga). The fried chicken taco was really tasty, with the slaw and sauce it felt like a cohesive dish. The other tacos however, were lackluster. The meat was cooked nice enough, but beyond the cilantro and onions they were topped with there wasn't much to them. We were given a chipotle sauce to add, but it didn't really contribute to the tacos much. The tater tots were fried to perfection, but the queso sauce included was a small dish of Velveeta/cheese from a pump you'd expect from fast food, not an actual Mexican restaurant. The margaritas tasted like something you may get a a college party. Overall, there are a number of dishes on the menu beyond the tacos including indulgent treats like milkshakes, and if you are looking for a combination of Mexican and American foods this may be a good option, but overall with the many options available in the area, if you are looking for good Mexican food, look elsewhere. read more

Food is alright and is unique. Never had a sandwich like this place before. The fish taco is delicious and crispy. The cemita is very filling, maybe sharable. Last time I was here there was a long strand of hair in my nachos and there was a bug in my water. Service was good. read more

With its welcoming ambience and real people prices, this is the type of place that would be on our regular casual dinner out rotation if it were local. But we trekked from BK to try it and I am just not sure the food is destination-worthy. First the good: The Onion Rings John Z. raves about are indeed, all that. They took me back to summers at the State Fair when I was a kid, where fried food (and cream puffs) were everything. They do beer on tap right here. Beer geek hubby LOVED that his Allagash White was chilled to the perfect temperature and was equally smitten by the addition of an orange slice perched along the rim of his glass. Staff was super sweet: A special shoutout to our server (with the red Milwaukee Bucks cap) and also the manager (I think); There are plenty of BK spots that could take a lesson from you both in how not to be a total a**hole to customers. Now the not so good: The Chicken Tinga Cemita was lacking in the layers of flavor that make this classic Pueblan sandwich so delicious. The bread was soggy even as I took my first bite. And I found myself longing for more heat and smoky chipotle. Though I am not normally a big fan of papalo, I could detect it in the sandwich and found that it actually added some welcome herbaceous oomph. Kid, who has never encountered a taco he didn't like, happily chowed down on a quartet of them with different fillings. But hubby's Carnitas Burrito was bland and the pork could have been more tender. Bottom line is I'd like to give this spot another chance at some point. Killer Onion Rings and warm, friendly service go a long way with me. Maybe all the way back to Sunnyside. read more

Best cemitas and burritos! If you've never had a cemita before, go here now and get one. Maybe bring a friend because they're big and filling. Highly recommend the Chicken Tinga in both burritos and cemitas. The man who often works there on the weekends is always kind and efficient (sorry I don't know your name). It's also a cute place with tasteful patterned tiles and an eye for relaxed but aesthetic details. They have outdoor seating as well. read more

Had lunch here today. Walked in at 1:30pm, the place was fairly busy but service was a bit confusing. I noticed limited seating but i had to place my order first and pay at the register. I was given a number and we found a table for 3ppl. I found it the service confusing, as when i was ordering i got the bill and it was as if i was getting table side service because the bill asked if u wanted to leave a tip? So its a bit on the awkward side. None the less, my bill was $37 before tip. The menu is straight forward, tacos, beer, cemitas and side dishes. We order carnitas tacos, barbacoa and southern fried chicken taco along with a carnitas cemita. I will say this, i eat a lot from the mexican places along Roosevelt avenue and although the food was good, it lacked authenticity. The cemita was presented as a small sandwhich. There was lettuce, tomato, mayo and the protein but it felt like an American version of a mexican cemita. The tacos are a good size, plenty of pork in my taco with all the usual accompaniments. The guacamole and freshly made chips was good. In my opinion the chips were a bit greasy and when had with the guacamole, you get a coating of the oil all over your palate. This makes it difficult to taste everything else. If you never ate at a Mexican food truck in Roosevelt Ave, you will like this place. They have a very good selections of beers outside of the usual suspects. I had a draft Allagash for $7 which paired well with my meal. While i waited for my meal, our table was next to the register area. The person at the counter was making milkshakes for the table behind ours. He saw my daughter and he offered to give her a sample of the vanilla shake. I think that was very thoughtful. My food came to the table after 10 minutes but they forgot my beer, so server cam back with beer and water. The counter has about 8 seats, so that is kind if cool. Tables are really tiny. Do not expect any kind of silverware. You get a tray, paper plates and napkins. The ambiance is nice. Although the bathroom needs to be service more often if you know what i mean. I can see this place being great for take out if i lived nearby. Honestly, i will not come back. Food lacks authenticity and for the price, i expect table side service. Walking in for the first time was disappointing to have to get in line, pay up front, be asked for a tip and I cannot even get real flatware. In my opinion, not a well thought out process. Lucky for me 2 stores down is De Mole restaurant which has the same prices, table side service and REAL flatware & tableware with consistent food quality. The barbacoa taco felt a but dry. The southern fried chicken taco was creative but its one of those items that is more for show is not something that i would have again. The staff is very friendly and attentive. I did miss not having dessert, i suppose there is no dessert since nobody offered any during my visit. read more

I love Cemitas. I've tried nearly everything, from simple chips and guac to their awesome fried chicken burrito. Nothing has ever left me disappointed. The only possible downside is that it gets really hot during the summer there, but that's not their fault. They open the front doors for the summertime vibes and I get that. Good service, great food every time. Not bad on prices, either. read more

SO GOOD. Came here for a quick cinco de mayo meal. The cemitas carnitas sandwich and the beef one are absolutely delicious. The pork is my favorite, seasoned so perfectly and the combination of the pickled and veggies is just an explosion of flavor that comes so perfectly together. I could only eat half a sandwich because it is SO FILLING but you'll be more than happy to take the other half home to enjoy later. They have a special $3 coronas until 7 or 8 I think. So it went perfectly with my sandwich. I came on a weekday around 4pm and parking on the side streets is available (especially near the school) since they allow parking there after 4. So you'll definitely be able to find a spot if you go around that time. But the 7 train is also a few blocks away. I also wanna say the service is Excellent. They are just so nice and attentive and even gave us q margarita on the house. Just really good vibes and a cute place to go. This is an overall great queens spot and will 100% come again. read more

A nice spot for Mexican food. If you're a fan of onion rings, the onion rings here really are amazing. I'd give them a 9/10, with the only downside being that they break apart and crumble just way too easily. The house dill ranch dressing is delicious, but unfortunately costs $1.50 extra for a tiny container (I'm not a fan when restaurants nickle and dime you for sauces) The $9 cemitas sandwiches are stuffed with goodies, the meats are tender, and the bread is perfectly toasted. They have two great hot sauces too, a home made red mild sauce that tastes great, and a crazy spicy green habanero sauce. Both delicious. They also have a unique selection of draft beers that go for $6-7. The margaritas are delicious but unfortunately bit small for $8 (I'm spoiled by the $4 margaritas in The Haab down the street) Overall, the food is a bit pricier than the competition but the ingredients really seem fresh and the food is great. read more

Me and my wife heard about this place from the Gothamist and decided to head over to Queens to check it out. Definitely worth the trip. We stopped by yesterday for lunch.The space itself is very modern and clean. Fun atmosphere with a nice indie mix playing that was loud enough to be enjoyed, but not too loud that a conversation couldn't be held. Our server was very friendly, fast and knowledgeable about the food. She recommended we try the fried chicken cemita, which both me and my wife had. It was delicious. The ingredients are tasty and fresh and the sandwich definitely fills you up. Well worth the money. My only suggestion would be to add more beers to the menu, as there aren't a lot of options on draft. We will definitely be back again. read more

So sad that it took me a full year of living in Sunnyside to find this place!! They do cemitas and burritos right! The flavor profile of their menu is so delicious and unique. Personally I've never had fish in a burrito before but now it's my go to order! We also enjoyed their brunch (tator tots were sooo good) and also love the margaritas! read more

One of my favorite spots in the neighborhood...the food is A+ and vibe is fun. I absolutely love their shrimp tacos, getting hungry as I write this, they are delectable! Cemitas are excellent as well and huge, I can never finish one myself. I love their fried chicken Cemita in particular. Really solid all around, even delivery. read more

The place has a very nice clean look, bathroom was impeccable, we were greeted by our waiter who provided great friendly service, my boyfriend got the agua de horchata which has been the best we've had, then got a crispy shrimp burrito and a chicken burrito. Both were filled with delicious flavors and very ingredients. Highly recommended! read more

SHOUTOUT to the coolest guys and gals ever at Cemitas - I am so, so glad that I decided to come here after my co-worker recommended it. I love your establishment and come here at least 1-2 times per week with my friends, coworkers and family. Thank you for providing such a delicious option so close to my home! The food is consistently flavorful and amazing. Good portions. I've come in person, I've ordered delivery, I've ordered over the phone and come in to pick it up - service is always consistently fast with delicious food. I personally recommend the chicken tinga burrito with guac - the chicken is extremely well seasoned and juicy. Their guac is also a highlight. You can really taste the lime juice and the proper seasonings for guac. Their happy hour deal is pretty awesome too, $4 for frozen drinks, beers, etc. I enjoy their sangritas. Yesterday, I joined a holiday pub crawl in Sunnyside. To break up the alcohol consumption and reenergize ourselves, we stopped at Cemitas El Tigre. At first, I was confused as to what a Cemita was, but after viewing the photos here on Yelp, I realized I had try one. I order the Southern Friend Chicken Cemita, and I experienced greatness. This sandwich is a MUST. Do not go there without ordering one. You can have tacos somewhere else. (I didn't try their tacos, I assume they would taste good, however, how many other Mexican spots are making this sandwich) I ordered guacamole and chips which were fresh and tasty. The speed of service was average because about twenty of us entered at once and overwhelmed the staff. They handled it very well considering the rush. Definitely would visit again even though I live in the Bronx. read more

What an amazing place hidden away. There was great service and spacious. Ordered Guacamole and chips, crunchy fresh chips and I think the guacamole was okay. Then, fish taco and carnitas, my friend ordered the cemitas. The tacos were delicious, both were topped with garnishes that went well with the tacos. The carnitas was so juicy and flavorful, fish was flaky and the outside was crunchy. The cemitas was jam packed with food, a very filling and good sandwich, although it was very messy. The waiter was nice enough to let me sample a bit of their horchata, tasty but super sweet, I would never be able to finish a whole serving. Though the horchata came in handy when their homemade hot sauce was burning my mouth but such a delicious burn. The only downside is the tacos are pricey, $4-$4.50 each, on average a taco is $3. Other than that it's a great place to check out in this neighborhood. read more

Great service Mimosa was tasty . They have jaritos . The chicken cemita was great and the beef cemita was tasty. Elote was good ! I liked it, and guaco was fresh (small portion tho) We got a side of Mexican rice and it was also good. The churos for desert were very good. We got them with a side of chocolate ! Absolutely love this place the the sandwiches are legendary. The southern fried chicken Cemitas is my go to. I come here every time I'm in town. Really love all the food here the shrimp tacos if you are are my favorite if you are doing tacos. And I really love the barbacoa tacos as well. But you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I tried my first Cemita years at Smorgusburg in Brooklyn a couple years ago, and it remains the best sandwich I've ever had. Once I learned they were opening in Queens, I couldnt wait to visit. I stopped in for lunch and was not disappointed. Conveniently located off the 7 train, the spot is clean, inviting, and serves craft beer! I ordered a brew and a Cemita (you can't go wrong with any of the varieties, but this time I had the fried chicken), and was in my glory. The owner Danny is awesome, and his staff were very welcoming. I cant recommend this place enough, and I'm looking forward to coming back to try the rest of the menu, including their milkshakes. Do yourself a favor and stop in. read more

My first time trying Cemitas el Tigre, and I gotta say it was alright. A little overpriced in my opinion. I ordered the barbacoa cemita and it was around 16 dollars but it wasn't a very big sandwich. The place was very clean though and my food was ready on time. read more

Thank you fellow Yelp mates for providing a heads up on this restaurant. What a fantastic find! Parking was easy, prices were right on and service was solid. Upon entry, I was greeted by a nice guy behind the counter and I warned him that I was a first timer - to take it easy on me. :) He was very friendly, handed me a menu and invited me to grab a seat anywhere. I chose the counter so that I could see the action. I was having a tough choice making the decision between a cemita or the fish tacos. The guys behind the counter advised that both are excellent, but that I should try the cemita first and then the fish tacos on my second visit. While I usually focus on Taqueria Coatazingo on Roosevelt Ave for my cemitas, I have to say that this one is great - if not better! And parking is easier as well! This is a great little establishment with really friendly folks working there. This is the kind of place where I like to spend my hard earned money and I hope you do too. read more

Incredibly overpriced but we gave it a try anyway, thinking we'd be in for something out of this world. Why else charge 14 bucks for a sandwich right? Stupid. My sandwich smelled like it was taken out of a dumpster. It was absolutely inedible. I hate wasting food but I had to throw this right back where it came from, the garbage. My husband was also disappointed with his food but at least he was able to eat his :( read more

Great spot! I came to know their Cemitas sandwiches from having experienced them at Smorgasburg each of the past few years and decided it was time to check out their brick and mortar location in Sunnyside. I'm glad I did! You order at the counter and the food/drink is served to the table. The service is polite and attentive. I recommend ordering the carnitas cemita, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My girlfriend particularly enjoys the southern fried chicken burrito. I look forward to coming back soon and hope that the ownership has plans to open more locations because they do things right. read more

I was in the neighborhood one afternoon for work and was surprised to find this local gem. The place was very sleek and modern. The bartender who served me was very friendly. But how was the food, you may ask. Fantastic! My eyes were way too big for my stomach, so I started with a crispy fish taco. One of the best I've had. Next I had the Carnitas Cemitas. This was the first time I've ever had one of these types of sandwiches and I hope it's not the last. The sandwich was so overstuffed that I could only eat half (boy was I psyched for that other half later). The sandwich was an excellent balance of the vegetables (love avocado on any sandwich), the creamy cheese and the excellently seasoned and cooked pork. My only regret is that Cemitas El Tigre is too off my beaten track. I would definately return. Who knows, maybe a special trip is in order. read more

Food was delicious. The fried chicken cemita lived up to the hype, with the different layers melding into one great bite after another. The crispy shrimp taco had too much batter for my taste. And the fish taco was pretty good, as were the onion rings. I will say that the fact that they upcharge for cheese and sauces was annoying. At least tell the customer when you ask if they want to add those things that they'll be an additional charge. read more

Stopped in yesterday for my first visit. Quite impressed with the experience. Simple design, clean and friendly faces. Food was fresh and served to us nice and hot. Bursting with great crisp flavors. I walked in and was greeted by a waiter by the name of Andrew, who was an amazing waiter. Dude was one of the nicest people I've ever met. He was super attentive without being overbearing. He told me all about the food and gave a few recommendations too. I decided to try the Southern Fried Chicken and the Pork cemitas. Also had a Michelada, which was delicious as well. Southern Fried Chicken cemita was BOMBBBBBBB. The chicken is so good, I can't even. The pork was definitely delicious as well. A tad oily, but still juicy as hell. BOTH HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Overall, no grade could ever describe how good this place was. A+ doesn't even cut it. I definitely plan to go back for that chicken sandwich. Its soooo off the chain. The cemita, often called the Mexican Dagwood, originates from Puebla, Mexico, where street vendors layer mounds of fresh ingredients between a crusty sesame seeded bun. At Cemitas El Tigre, the sandwich is taken a few steps farther with your choice of meat along with all of the fixings: avocado, Oaxaca Cheese, pickled onions, papalo (a cilantro-like herb with notes of citrus and arugula), chipotle puree, mayonnaise, black bean puree, lettuce and tomatoes. Cemitas El Tigre was born in 2011 at the world famous food market, Smorgasburg. Since then, Cemitas has opened up many seasonal pop-up locations and now a restaurant in Sunnyside, Queens where it serves cemitas, burritos, tacos, onion rings, milkshakes, wine, craft beers and more.

Meet the Business Owner: Danny L.

Danny is a California native and spent much of his youth traveling the coast of Mexico. He has worked extensively in restaurants on both coasts of the states and has always been a devout student of Mexican food, often traveling to Puebla to understand the origins of the cemita. Danny was a producer for major TV networks and the Food Network before transitioning back into the food business.

Have been following Cemitas since first tasting it at Smorg in Brooklyn. Tasty multi-level sandwiches with a kick. I heard they were moving to the neighborhood a few months back and have been excited about trying it. Made it there yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is fast food with an upscale twist. The decor is well thought out and layout is efficient. The waitstaff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The beer selection is small but good and the pour is fast. I ate the standard Cemita and the portobello taco. Very flavorful. Could use a second tortilla as mentioned in another post. The reply from the proprietor made it sound like I could request multiple tortillas for the tacos. Will definitely try that on my next go. Cemitas is a Mexican place in this up and coming area in Queens. Looks like they're a great addition to the neighborhood. They have an open kitchen in the back, so you can watch your food getting made if you want. I had the burger cemita, and it was excellent. It's a 10-layer sandwich, and I can't remember everything in there. There's Oaxca cheese, which is similar from my perspective to mozzarella. There's also pickled vegetables, chipotle spread, and something that looks like cole slaw. All together, it's a party of a taste sensation, and I can't wait to go back. It was packed when I was in there, so they're going to have to add staff pretty soon if they keep filling the place up. At first it was tasty, with maybe hints of bullion and tomatoes; but after a few bites, it started reminding me of cafeteria rice & had a bit too much oil. It seems like a popular place, a mom and her kid came in for tacos after school, local workers and contractors who seem to know the staff and delivery guys, came in for their lunch.
