Definitely hearty and satisfying without feeling like the beef was just an afterthought. But the Peach Pie? Hands down the star This was SO good--fruity, pleasantly tangy, and not overly sweet. It was served still warm, which made it even better. Even the whipped cream was nicely restrained, adding that extra creamy texture without dumping a ton of sugar on top. Parking is plentiful, but can get crowded on the weekends. Interior has an old fashion cafe feel to it... maybe it's the maple color benches, tables, and chairs. Staff was cordial and friendly. Pies and sides were behind the glass near the front entrance. I wanted to try their peach pie, but they ran out. I got apple pie instead. It was flaky on the outside filled with good chunks of perfectly sweet apples on the inside. Coleslaw only had finely chopped cabbage and shredded carrots in a very light and tangy dressing. Coleslaw wasn't bad, but I was expecting a bit more veggies in it. I haven't dined in as of yet. Maybe I'll do that next time to try their other specialty food items.

Chicken was juicy. I usually don't eat chicken wings. Even after it got cold, the wings still tasted tender and not dry. Grilled Cabbage with Bagna Cauda - I do like a good cabbage dish, but the cabbage was under charred, way too greasy, & lacked acidity. After finishing the half portion of cabbage, it left an unpleasant after taste. Not a well balanced dish at all. Not my favorite dish. Maybe we should've gotten a simple salad instead. Dan Dan Campanelle - the dish came warm not hot. Good flavors and the Campanelle had a good chew, but not an exceptional dish. Hainan Fish Rice - I was so looking forward to this dish. The fish was cooked perfectly, but again lacking balance. The ginger oil is muted and purely decorative, lacking the sharp, sinus-clearing bite needed to wake up the dish. Without the bright, raw punch of ginger and chili, the dish tastes heavy and one-dimensional. I just wished there were more flavors and not just the taste of oil with each bite of fish and ginger. Good ingredients used, but just too heavy on the oil, too light on the aromatics. We didn't fully enjoy our meal as much as we would've liked. We might come back and try the brunch some day.

Food: You can get pretty much anything you'd want here ranging from pizza to Mongolian BBQ. Each station has some sort of ridiculously nerdy name that adds to the dining experience. I'm going to go through all the options one by one, so bear with me: Bunsen Burner (Grill): This place serves piping hot breakfast in the morning and transitions to choice cuts of meats in the afternoon. They seriously have a butcher's delicase in the dining hall. How sweet is that? Deli Epicenter: The Epicenter is the to go place for some sandwiches. Never tried it, but the line is always ridiculous, so it must be at least decent. Salad-Fusion: The salad bar is priced at $0.39/oz. Not super impressive as the selection is fairly small, but it holds its own. Each plate comes with a baked roll. Wok Zone: This is the Mongolian BBQ station. The product that comes out of here is entirely dependent on your ability to mix the sauces correctly. Sometimes they'll randomly throw weird items into your food that you didn't want like corn. I don't know why. Maybe there are some passive aggressive employees who hate their job behind the counter. The amount of food you get is astronomical. Pizza-Byte: Super good pizza at a reasonable price with loads of crazy options to choose from like Ranch Bacon Chicken. Comfort Equation/Latin Bar: These are the two stations in the middle of the dining hall that serve the absolute best things on campus. The Latin bar frequently has tostadas with really great meat offerings. Bandwidth Bakery: Has baked goods... most aren't super awesome. TechTonics: This is a glorified soda fountain with coffee. The name is much more awesome than the actual station. Soup Station: It's soup. Sushi: Also self-explanatory. Cooking 101: Ok, this one is pretty special. They serve absolutely delicious pasta here, cooked to order. Some of the meats include chicken, sausage, and meatballs. You can get red, cream, or a combo of sauces. They'll often experiment with different dishes like pho on occasion. I would stay away from the pho, though. It was watery and tasted nothing like the real thing! Service: It's a dining hall so you grab what you want and pay at the front in cash, credit, or Caltech card. There's an area in the back to return your plate etc. that a lot of people forget about. Atmosphere: It's a typical dining hall experience, but at least they have pomegranates, artichokes, a large array of citrus fruits, and strawberries growing outside. I think they sometimes use those in the food. Synopsis: Pretty cool, although with the swipe card option you can easily spend over 10 bucks for lunch and not even know it.

This reminds me of Haven City Market in Rancho Cucamonga, except this space is much more intimate, smaller, where locals hang out. It is vibrant, trendy & full of choices for snacks, coffee, boba, baked goods & also a multitude of cultural foods (Mediterranean Filipino, Mexican,Thai, Korean, Caribbean, ETC). Communal tables available for indoor & outdoor dining. The 2nd floor (elevator for disabled access, stairs as well) space is quieter for work or study & events too. I forgot to photograph the stage where a small play or a spot for presentation is also available. Artwork is posted on the walls by local artists practice their freedom of expression. So neat! Staff at various vendor stalls are very friendly & open to share their passions to customers. Met the pastry chef from Baking With Ish, Ishnoel from Mindanao, Philippines and the barista/cashier, Jacqueline at Lotus & Bean, they're genuinely welcoming. I felt like the heights of tables were confusing, and bench seating was uncomfortable, proof that you can borrow a bunch of hip restaurant interior ideas, but to create a space that is truly inviting is an art. It was hard to tell if anyone was working at some of the stalls. I got a mediterranean bowl that took 20 solid minutes to assemble on what felt like a generally slow day after the lunch rush. The carnita were very tender and shredded and full of flavor and the mashed potatoe were good including the gravy and long green bean were good but need little bit of sesson. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The Cafeteria has nice modern look with nice chair that you feel very comfortable they also have tea vending machine that have already prepare drink that's cool.
