My partner and I walked by 9th Avenue looking for a place to eat and noticed the beautiful clean lines, charming decor and chic environment of Cha Long. We decided to try it out. Hells Kitchen is known for having the best Thai food in Manhattan and we were a bit hesitant to try another Thai Spot. I am so glad we did! I truly have never had such amazing and original Thai food in all of Manhattan. I ordered the Grilled Hor Mok and this dish is truly one of a kind and a new favorite. I have never had something so incredibly savory, delicious and decadent despite the spicy heat kick in the dish! I hope they never change it! KEEP IT SPICY! Cute place in Hell's Kitchen with good Thai food! It was a 3.5/5 for all the food I'd say -- we got the crab curry and massaman brisket. The crab curry was yummy and kind of spicy, which I loved. The crab itself was fresh and juicy. The massaman curry was strangely sweet? I wasn't expecting that since massaman is usually savoury and packed with spices. I think the dish was overall kind of flat and unlike thai dishes in their complexity. It was the perfect spice level for me but was not for my dad. There are only about 5 bite size crab meat pieces and half of a soft crab. The curry was very savory and creamy. I felt like the portions for this was way too skimpy for the asking price. Moo Hong (braised pork belly) $22 (5/5): The 6-hour pork bites were extremely tender. The sauce is ever so sweet. So this restaurant is a new experience for me and my friends because this place is not like other thai restaurants in newyork. They have different concept to represent authentic Southern thai style food. And they joined the restaurant week that is worth trying also all the stuff was friendly and helpful to explain the menu to us. Even the cocktails are very creative and tasty, including mocktail, which are so refreshing. The food mostly seafood, and they don't adjust spicy, so be prepared for real authentic taste because everything is homemade and fresh. Anyway, so far, so good, we are really enjoying here, even dessert so refreshing, not too sweet and perfect for summer. We definitely come back and try more dishes. Out of the Thai restaurants in the area, Chalong has to be my favorite one. I've visited twice and all the dishes were so flavorful. The Steamed Fish, Moo Hong, and Crab Curry were my favorites. The key to a great meal here is finding balance in the flavor profiles. Order one too many curries or meat-forward dishes, you run the risk of savor-bombing yourself and everyone else at the table into oblivion. I went here on two separate occasions, having the Yum Som-O in one instance and the Lumpu Salad in the other. The Yum Som-O (8/10) is a trip in itself. The use of a whole pomelo--fresh, subtly tart and just sweet enough set on the backdrop of the cilantro lime dressing, mint and cilantro makes it a dish to remember. On the other hand, the Lumpu Salad (8.5/10)...this is definitely the dish to get savor-bombed on--in a good way. Huge, luscious, exploding-in-your-mouth oysters with the chili paste, fried shallots contrasted by the fresh ingredients. It's just absolute beauty. I wouldn't hesitate to get this. Lumpu salad is something to get to impress while the Yum Som-O is something to get to try something off the beaten path -- I would caution the Braised Pork Belly (7.25/10) and Goong Karee (7.5/10) as a combination as this can overload your savory senses and you'd just end up with an overly salty meal. While they are fantastic by themselves it can be balanced with dishes like the Crab Curry (8/10) or the Steamed Fish (8.5/10). The steamed fish is hands down a must-have that'll help balance the meal out as it brings a zesty tang of fish sauce with the succulent perfectly cooked fish. The Sator Goong (8/10) is a great savory dish; however it has a very familiar, comforting taste that doesn't stand out if you're feeling adventurous. It is a very well made dish though. read more

The waitress was extremely helpful in explaining the menu and was very prompt in getting us our order and food. To eat we had: Crab curry - she mentioned this was spicy, and we thought we would be okay. But this felt unnecessary in our opinion. The flavors were divine and the sauce was creamy with a buttery mouthfeel, but I don't think I need to start crying from pain to enjoy the dish. Interesting appetizer, but wasn't my favorite Crab curry ($28): small, also didn't love the taste Pla Tod ($36): it was fried well, but it was an extremely small fish. Still, probably my favorite out of all the dishes Mee Pum Riang ($25): I liked this as well, the coconut curry cream added a nice kick to the noodles but didn't feel too heavy Wok of Green ($12): we felt that we were missing some veggies and these were stir-fried in a sweet soy sauce. The food was pretty good. I ordered the Goong Karee and my friends got the see Lew and pad mee. All of us agreed that our dishes were on the sweeter end of the spectrum, but we liked them. Prices ranged from $18 to $25 for the entrees. The restaurant was well decorated. The bud vases and wooden wall decor were nice accents. However it was really loud inside. There's not much sound insulation between the different parts of the restaurant. Although we sat at a table in the middle dining space, there was a large party at the bar and it was generally hard to hear each other. The wait staff was great. The hostess at the front could have been more accommodating. She initially did not let my party sit down until everyone had arrived. When we were seated she let us know that we had the table for 2 hours. Omg this place is saur good! Would definitely recommend making a reservation via Resy or something beforehand because it gets saur busy, but it's definitely worth it. Everything on the menu was incredible including the thai iced tea (which can be a miss at some places!) and the dessert (mango sticky rice). The ambiance/decor is so welcoming, drinks are innovative and delicious but of course the food is the star of the show (as it should be). The menu is seafood-forward but also has great meat options like their ribeye (so good) and pork belly which I still need to try. Another great Thai Restaurant in Hell's Kitchen! When I first set a reservation at this restaurant, I wasn't sure what I was selecting. I saw a great overall rating and just reserved a dinner spot for 2, thinking I was going to order my usual Pad See Ew. Little did I know, I was going to be more "adventurous" than usual. On a busy Monday night of Memorial Day Weekend, the restaurant itself was packed and loud. The interior caught my eye and it was nicely decorated. A friend and I ordered Peek Gai Tod (chicken wings), Crab Curry, Spicy Ribs, and Mango Sticky Rice-- all of which totaled slightly under $100 excluding tip. The Peek Gai Tod was crispy and delicious! The sauce was sweet and complemented the chicken really well. There were plenty of small wings to share around. The Crab Curry had a really spicy kick but the taste itself was very delicious. The Spicy Ribs weren't as spicy as the Crab Curry even though it was labeled the same amount of spice level. There was more of a sweet taste to the Spicy Ribs sauce. I usually don't like to eat ribs because I'd have to eat with my hands but the meat really falls off of the bone and was really tender. Lastly, we finished dinner with their Mango Sticky Rice. Their portion was very small for the price ($15) but their Mango sweet and well chosen! Both entrees are worth trying! One stand out aspect was their service. They were constantly visiting our table and filling waters. I can't say the same for other Thai restaurants. Their menu is pretty small, just one page. Food comes out very quickly, which is good. And that's because they kept their menu small. The crab curry was tasty. But the portion is extremely disappointing. For a dish that's nearly $30 bucks.. I don't even have one whole soft-shelled crab in there. Just half with 3 pieces of Dungeness crab meat. For nearly $30 ... I really do expect to have at least one full soft shell crab maybe? It's more like a appetizer portion for a single person. Next is the steam fish. For a price of $38 bucks, the fish is all covered with a lot of herbs and chili sauces. It's tasty. BUT again. It's like an appetizer portion. The type of fish they use is an expansive type of fish that I know of and I'll give credit to them. But still. The small piece of fish is sadly not even enough for 2 people to share. Next is a seafood noodle dish. $20. Smells very good. But AGAIN.. portion size. I'm not gonna go with the details as you can imagine the rest. The entire night.. I literally was just eating rice with the curry sauce etc. Over all, for a total bill of $177 , there were 4 dishes and 2 drinks total. This is pretty sad leaving this place still hungry. I would recommend you to give it a try. As the food itself is good. But don't expect to be walking out here with a full stomach of food. Cause all the dishes are just appetizer portions. Chalong was incredible from the second we stepped in. Our waiter was very attentive and could tell we had researched the menu beforehand. We ordered a bottle of wine and he suggested a different bottle ($10 less) based on the dishes we ordered. We had the lumpu salad, crab curry, duck confit, cod wrapped in banana leaf and pad Thai. More than we needed but our server understood we were there for the experience and didn't mine over ordering. The appetizer salad was one of the most fantastic dishes I've ever had. The crab curry was off the charts and the duck confit was incredible. You could tell each dish was hand crafted to perfection. I've never had curry as fresh and flavorful and the seafood was very fresh. Our server was a delight, a Thailand native, who recommended places throughout the city, in Thailand, and in LA where we are from. He was very engaging and a fantastic server. Chalong is a fun, buzzy restaurant with a great date-worthy atmosphere. The service was good but maybe too quick. I called for a table around 7pm on a Saturday night and we waited about an hour for our table, which is reasonable considering the hype and that you can call ahead. We started our meal with the Lumpu Salad, which was recommended to us by our server. The Lumpu Salad is a fresh oyster salad with chili paste, fried shallots, cilantro, mint, pea shoots and a seafood sauce. This was my favorite bite of the meal because it was something new to my pallet and unlike any other salad I've had before. For my entree, I ordered the See Iew Chicken, which is a flat rice noodle dish with chicken, egg, and baby Chinese broccoli. The dish was similar to the Thai restaurant standard Pad See Ew. The food came out very quickly and they didn't course our food out so everything arrived roughly at the same time. For me, they lose a star for this.
