These wings were a simple yet incredibly flavorful start. They had a delightful crisp exterior, tender and juicy meat, and a subtle hint of lime. I really enjoyed eating them with the scallions. And the accompanying dipping sauce, with its perfect sweetness, elevated the dish even further! So good we asked if they sold the sauce so we could take some home. For my entrées, I opted for the Goong Karee (shrimp curry) and the Mee Pum Riang (Southern-style Pad Thai). The Goong Karee was generously portioned with a delicious mild curry flavor and ample sauce, perfect for enjoying with rice. It was thoroughly enjoyable. The Mee Pum Riang, a unique take on Pad Thai, arrived in a coconut curry cream with crunchy sprouts on the side, offering a good textural contrast. (Note: this version does not include peanuts) While I found it a tad sweet for my preference and would have appreciated a bit more heat, it was an excellent choice overall, and I'd happily order it again maybe with a special request to add a bit of spice. To complement my meal, I tried the Muang Bao, a server-recommended cocktail. This unique concoction featured mango, a sweet shrimp paste, and even a dried shrimp on a toothpick, which I was advised to sample with each sip for the full effect. It was an incredibly complex drink, a vibrant explosion of sour, sweet, salty, and spicy notes that truly tantalized my taste buds. Though it was on the pricier side, the experience of such a multi-layered flavor profile made it entirely worthwhile. The restaurant left a lasting impression. From the attentive service to the inviting decor and, of course, the exceptional food, every aspect contributed to a fantastic evening. We had made a reservation for 7:30 pm to dine in with a party of four on a Friday evening. Upon arrival, the host informed us that the table setup would take about 10 minutes. However, as time passed, we found ourselves waiting longer than expected. Despite checking in multiple times, we were repeatedly told to wait, and we weren't seated until about an hour after our reservation time. This wait was incredibly frustrating, especially after making a reservation in advance. To make amends for the delay, the host offered us a free appetizer, which was a kind gesture but didn't fully compensate for the time wasted. Once seated, we delved into the menu and ordered a variety of dishes, including the Lumpu Salad, Wok of Green, Tom Som Pla, Picanha Kra Praw, Moo Hong, and Khao Pad Mun Goong. The food, when it finally arrived, was outstanding. Each dish was bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. However, it's worth noting that the spice level was notably higher than expected. As lovers of Szechuan cuisine, we have a high spice tolerance, but even for us, the dishes bordered on being too spicy, without any adjustments. Overall, while the food at Chalong was undeniably delicious, the frustrating wait time and overly spicy dishes detracted from the overall dining experience. Snooty and ridiculously self satisfied. Every crab dish is a mushy failure more reminiscent of an unsuccessful burrito than a Thai crab dish. Do not serve hot drinks. Seriously, you can't get boiling water in a restaurant. Really, trying asking for it, not just tea, boiling water is a "no no". And then... the shrimp tacos are yummy. The ridiculously tiny pieces of branzini are nicely brined and the dish comes together. They swing for the fences and occasionally connect. The best user's guide we could come up with is this: avoid the "mush" foods - anything with crab, the brick of sea bass mush wrapped in banana leaves and so ridiculously spicy as to be virtually tasteless. But if you stick to food that is in pieces you can identify, they do hit home runs and deserve 5 stars for trying. As to the complimentary chicken wings with lunch, they don't compliment anyone, don't make eye contact and walk away from them - they look and taste like sugar grease sticks. And yes... the price. Expect to pay over $100 for lunch for two and not be exactly full, before tip. read more

I visited Chalong yesterday amidst 92-degree weather. Walking in without a reservation, I found the atmosphere slightly warm as the AC struggled to keep up. Nevertheless, the staff were exceptionally friendly. I started with Cha Sod Som, hoping for a strong orange flavor akin to Thai tea, but found it disappointingly light. Next time, I'll opt for Thai tea instead. However, the steamed fish and pad see ew were outstanding--their flavors were spot on and left me wanting more. My adventure turned spicy with the Goong Karee when I bit into a raw onion, which added an unexpected kick to the shrimp curry. Despite this surprise, the curry itself was average in taste. One quirky detail: the Aesop in the bathroom looked more like an imitation, which gave me a chuckle. Even on a busy Friday night, the service was excellent and our server was attentive throughout the meal. We ordered a combo menu for four and the food was flavorful, satisfying and generously portioned. While one appetizer only came three pieces for our group of four, everything else was enjoyable.
