Chang'An's environment and ambience has always been excellent, one of the best among Chinese restaurants nearby. In the past, besides the Peking duck (its claim to fame), all other dishes were pretty awful. Our recent trip had this all changed. Besides the duck, which was excellent as always, we also ordered stir fry beef with wild pepper and pork rib. Both were very good. The stir fried beef was so good that we asked for a 2nd serving. We also ordered two deserts, picture attached. Both were very tasty. For drinks, we ordered rose black tea, which was refillable, and 2 beers. They are literally doing one-time business. First, food tastes really average for a $200+ per person restaurant, one of our green vegetables dish first came with a very thick and long hair in it, we noticed it immediately when they put on the table. And the second time they brought it, the vegetables are super hard to bite off and chew. Second, service is quite disappointing. For those seafood we ordered, they never tell us the price per pound, and never confirm the quantity and quality with us. Based on fish bone length and head size, it should be approximately 1.1-1.3 lbs, but they charged us 3 lbs. (My friend joked they were charging us by weighting the whole dish, including the soup and the bowl....) Also, they never provide us a detail receipt on what we ordered and the price for each dish. Until we suspected, they excused that we have to wait for the manager returns to get the receipt. Eventually, they provided it to us, but they have cleaned up the table and we lost the fish that we want to argue about. Last, they force their customers to pay minimum 25% tips on after tax price. We booked a private room for our friends birthday and the host stated that it was $150 per person as the minimum which we were completely okay with. We barely ordered anything, 2 king crabs, 2 Peking ducks, and some dishes and the bill came out to about $3500. It's expensive in my opinion, but that's not the reason for the 1 star review. The servers demanded 25% tip and tried to force it upon us when we didn't receive excellent service to begin with. Our party noted that we were okay with tipping 20%, but the servers went back and forth slightly arguing with us that if you book a private room you have to pay 25% tip and they tried to over charge my friends credit card with the 25% tip. We noted this rule was not vocalized to us when booking the room and they stated tipping was mandatory in California. After going back and forth, they let us leave with tipping 20% because we stated no one told us about this rule. To be honest, it wasn't about the money. Ive dined here twice and contrary to other reviews (which gave me low expectations) the food and service were not that bad. I do admit for the price point, it is a little absurd however. Of course, I do agree with other reviews that if you are going to make the trip, you will certainly dislike it if you don't reserve the roast duck beforehand. I think it is some of the best roast duck I've ever had: not too fatty and sliced thinly enough where I'm not sick of it after one bite. I also like how they added the wood-fire smoked portion, which wasn't there when i first dined here. It really has a different flavor and gave us the joy of trying two dishes in one. Unfortunately, I think only the duck is exceptionally done here. Ive tried a lot of their other dishes, and although the presentation is beautiful, they were all pretty lack luster for the price you'll end up paying. My favorite dish other than the duck, was the old Shanghai style smoked fish. I think the glaze on that dish was excellent. I also enjoyed eating the eggplant as well (but I also just love eggplants). The twice cooked lamb was good when I first went, but when I came back I didn't like it as much anymore. The short ribs were good but not worth the price. The pan fried dumplings and mapo tofu were a bit lacking in my opinion overall. The peach green tea is very fragrant, I think it's a must if you're looking at drinks. I would give it 4 stars mainly for the friendly and enthusiastic service (they really expressed they took pride in their food) and I do think you should try it at least once for the tableside duck roasting and carving presentation! read more

Came to Chang'an and had the Duck, Truffle noodles, and Soup. Overall the presentation & duck in my opinion was a 7/10 . The duck itself was very rich in flavor and the pear that was included in the wraps complimented it well. However I don't know if this was a language barrier but I was under the impression that the soup was included since it was apart of our "duck". I had the wonderful experience of having lunch at Chang'an! I've eaten dinner there before, which was delicious and beautifully served, and unlike any Chinese food I've ever had. (This is not chow mein or orange chicken, but food traditional to elegant restaurants in China - a very different kind of cuisine! ) Now that Lunch Specials are being served, it was a great opportunity to try new dishes. The menu is reasonably priced and the food just as delicious! I had beef shank - flavorful and tender, pork soup buns - with a sauce that was amazing, and a delicate tofu dish with a vegetable called Toon. I have previously had dinners at Chang'an - which is an exceptional experience - and I'm also happy to say that they are now offering a special lunch menu that is just as delicious with just as exceptional service at a very reasonable price. The food is not your typical "American Chinese" food. Instead, they offer a selection of traditional foods with tastes that are always a happy surprise. Whether it's a beef, poultry (OMG, their duck!) or seafood dish, noodle soup, bao or - my new favorite - their duck wings, each is somehow familiar and, at the same time, new and exciting. Even better is that the portions are large enough to share - or bring home for later! The restaurant is beautiful (you should even check out the bathroom!) and it's quiet - no matter how full - so it's always a lovely place to go for real conversation. Their wine selection is excellent and they offer a variety of teas that are also a pleasure if you're a non-drinker (like me). And definitely try their desserts. They're delicious! The place was nice inside and quiet. We came here for lunch and there were 6 of us. The duck was ordered a day ahead which is required. It was a full duck that was lit on fire at table side and sliced by a skilled chef. The duck was prepared 3 ways. The duck skin was sliced first and pair with sugar that you dipped the skin in and ate. That was the first time any of use experienced that method of eating duck skin. To me, the skin was not as crispy and very oily. The rest of the skin was left on the duck. One way offered was original and the other was smoked. The smoked duck could have stayed longer under the glass for a stronger smoke taste. It was paired with a flat wrap that was steamed instead of the bao. Plum sauce, sliced scallions and pear was to be used in the duck wrap. The pear was a pleasant surprise and different. The bones were made into a wonton soup that we choose to do, and it was delicious. We also ordered 3 other dishes, but they are small plates. The duck wraps given was 10 when there were 6 of us and at least 2 per person should have been provided. There was more duck left than the wraps. Once the food came, not much attention was paid to us, or they would have asked us earlier if we wanted more wraps. By the time they came to check on us, we just finished and made ready to pay and leave. The potions of food were not plentiful for 6 people and way over-priced. The tea price shocked us for it was $28 a pot. Nothing special about the tea. Did not have much of the flavor we were expecting. We wanted to try this place and we did. But they really put green onions on it and I actually don't want onions. Also, I want some water. While I was eating, my daughter wanted to drink some water. I went for a dinner with group of friends. We ordered many dishes. None of them are below $50, but I don't remember what I ate there. The food tastes just ok, like 6 or 7 points of 10. None of them are perfect comparing with the high end restaurant. I wouldn't suggest anyone to waste the money there. Not worth! So disappoint. The management is not respecting the customers. I understand the most famous dish is the Beijing duck, but their house rule is no more than one duck per table regardless of the number of people. Not sure how does this rule come out, but definitely not reasonable or smart. If I have a group of 12 people, it means at least two of them won't be able to share it. It just doesn't make any senses. I always drive by the restaurant but since you can't see inside from the street I never thought much of it until I saw it highlighted on some random food blog. Quite honestly the interior is beautiful. Service is attentive and accommodating. These were the very first two things that jumped out at me. Then I realized it was full and all the patrons were chinese. Always a good sign at a chinese restaurant. I was getting hyped by the time I sat down. The duck did not disappoint. Best presentation and best tasting peking duck. The other dishes we ordered failed to match the duck but in truth we had to order dishes we thought our kids would like so we didnt get to try any spicy dishes and the menu had many of them. In the scale of 1-10, the interior decoration of this place is worth 10, the food is about 1, and service is 0. I don't understand how the management runs this place, if you can afford to spend so much money on your interior, why don't you hire some real chefs? Everything about my visit to this restaurant was exceptional. The atmosphere is friendly and very welcoming. The food was sublime, with very traditional Xi'an's taste. Roasted Duck is highly recommended. The chef will cut the duck in front of the table, just as a show. The texture of the meat is tender and juicy. Wrap the duck meat and green onion, seasoned with sweet soy sauce and natural crystal sugar, the sweetness of the pear, the crunchiness of the cucumber, and the juicyness of the meat all pop in a single bite. Okay, friends let me start off by saying I am the most fair and honest yelper out there. This place is beautiful and perfectly clean with modern decor! It had a modern Asian look that is definitely high end. My family came here for a small celebration for my sister. Little did we know that the food was not typical Mandarin Chinese cuisine, something we are used to in O.C. The menu was so limited with an average orange chicken or beef & broccoli dish running about $50. Their famous Peking duck was excellent, with a quick fire show that roasted the skin to perfection. The dish is all about the skin so do not expect more than a taste, especially if you come in a large group. We had a party of 10 people. Very pricey, so beware. We had lamb chops, beef rib sliced thinly (not on the rib when served), famous shrimp dish with like 8 shrimps, fried rice that was pretty bland, their famous beef soup that served 4 people with a strange broth etc. All in all, we had 8-10 dishes ordered plus the duck. Each plate served max 4 people, which we did not expected since it was like $50 min for each dish. Forget the dessert, it was outrageously expensive. They served a peach or strawberry fancy ice cream the size of an egg with some dry ice on a huge plate for $18. Hmm it was not for sharing for sure. So our bill with tip was about $800 and no one in my family left even close to being full. I am missing some pictures of my other dishes bc I was not excited to take them. We recently celebrated our son's first birthday party at Chang'an and I want to sincerely thank the staff and especially the manager Lin for catering to us and helping us host such a wonderful event. I can't say enough about the experience of having our party at Chang'an; the service was impeccable, the food was delicious and the ambiance was perfect. We hosted roughly 70 people for our event and took up most of the restaurant. Every step of the way, Lin and his staff were beyond cooperative and helpful to accommodate our wishes, even going so far as ordering custom tables to help maximize space and coming in early to allow us to set up our decorations. Every one of our guests complimented us on the venue and how great the food/service was. As a host that's all you can really ask for and we couldn't have done that without Lin and Chang'an. As a side note, I would like to add context to some of the poor reviews for the restaurant. Admittedly, the portions are small and the restaurant is expensive. But keep in mind this is not your typical Chinese restaurant. I would consider Chang'an a fine dining establishment or something similar to a Michelin starred restaurant. When you go to a fine dining restaurant, you're paying for the preparation, ambiance, service, quality of ingredients and culinary creativity. If you expect to go to Chang'an and order a couple of main dishes and some fried rice you will definitely be disappointed. But if you expect to pay for what you get, Chang'an is a wonderful dining experience. I highly recommend the following: Roast Duck (by far the best in the OC), Live Lobster, Cucumber and Cold Noodles in Chili Sesame, Pea Tips with Garlic, Biang Biang Noodles, Pan Fried Pork Dumplings, Lychee Shrimp and the Stir Fried Beef with Wild Pepper (very spicy). Luxury cost with just-okay food and almost zero service. This one bite of sea cucumber sushi costs $68!! No one told me it's just a bite/sushi style or recommend me order more food. So, I ended up still feeling hungry when I left the restaurant. Moreover, even though the restaurant was pretty empty, they still put me "one step" next to another table. I was literally attached to another men back to back. Sigh~ Because of the cost (me and my husband spent $200 for lunch), I expected a certain level of service... But besides the fancy interior, there is nothing worth the money. Staff are untrained and inexperienced and speak very little English. They sent our food to another table and asked the same questions many times by different staff which is kinda annoying. One waiter asked me if I wanted tea. I said yes and he left. 30min later I asked another waiter... I didn't get my tea... and he said we have many kinds of tea... what kind do you like OMG! Besides, food are just very ordinary compared to other less expensive Chinese restaurants and it took forever to cook with just few tables of customers. I tried their desserts and I have to say... frozen desserts from Costco taste better. From the food price to the interior, it's obvious they're trying to be a fine dinning. But, there is nothing close to fine dining except the decoration. Poor restaurant management and lack staff training. Needs a better restaurant manger to run this place... Overall, I'm disappointed. I'm surprise they still got some 5 star reviews which makes me think I was just bad luck ordering the wrong food being with the wrong people?? The reason I still gave 2 stars is because the decoration is nice and the staff are nice too. But, being a fine dining restaurant it needs more than that. I wouldn't complain all these if my lunch wasn't $200 (for two), we were only 40% full and they didn't ask at least 18% of tips. The interior is done very tastefully. We only had 3 options for alcoholic beverages: white wine, red wine and champagne. Each 30-40. We preordered the duck, it was bland. The hoison sauce was great but the duck was not worth $100. $68 for a tiny bowl of wagyu (bits only) fried rice. The beef short rib...I have a feeling they are reusing the bone and placing another type of beef on the plate; the beef was good...not great. Dry but had good flavor. The fried shrimp with mayo and wasabi was ok; but again, very expensive. Bok choy and morels, was lacking flavor and very small. Fried chicken was seriously the size of softball...great flavor though. I really wanted to love this place but I did not. No one in my family did. read more
