I literally live across the street from this place, so my heart goes out to it: Thai Coast has been my go-to Thai restaurant for years, if only for convience. That said, it's by no means the best. Though the service is prompt and courteous, the portions are moderate, drinks are well balanced, and the decore and location are great, the price-point seems a bit off. For example, the other day, I ordered one order of pad thai and one order of pad see ew for carry-out. That somehow came out to $26. I think that's a bit much for two carry-out dishes that don't come with any appetizers, soups, et al. I guess I'm saying that I'm lumping Thai food into the Chinese food category, and what my experience as an American has been with these foods. Well, historically, the price point has hovered around the $10 per dish mark for the outlets that serve, well Americans. (Yes, I'm well aware I could find less expensive and more authentic Chinese food, elsewhere.) But $13 per dish comprised of mostly rice noodles and chicken and veggies--after taxes, and with no trim. Well. That's what's keeping me from awarding Thai Coast it's fifth star. I will say this much though. Summer days and summer nights eating pad thai and drinking Sapparo on the patio are peerless. read more

My friend and I popped in here totally by accident Saturday night (51st State was closed - WTF???). It was 10:30pm, but there were two other tables of diners, so we asked if we could eat. The waitress just about fell over herself to get us seats and drinks quickly. We got Bud Light drafts for $1.95 (deal). We then proceeded to order and receive our meal faster than I have ever gotten anything at the Taco Bell late night drive through. We had garden rolls and Drunken Noodles. The noodles were piping hot and absolutely yummy. The sauce for the garden rolls was so good, my friend and I actually at the rest of it with our spoons! Hell, we were getting ready to fight over who got to lick the bowl it came in! Our server was just so friendly and courteous even though it was obvious they were getting ready to close. I really enjoyed this place and it was a pleasant surprise. We had hot, delicious food, cheap beer, excellent service, and never once felt rushed even when we realized they were getting ready to close (we did leave before "official" closing time though). Just ordered delivery to my hotel. 1.) Delivery was very fast. 2.) Panang curry was excellent. Portion size pretty small. Should be double the size for the money. 3.) Chicken satay was good. Nice char grilled, marinated chicken served with an excellent peanut sauce...the sauce was not too thick and not runny...perfect. 4.) Pad Thai noodles were too dry. Not very big pieces of chicken either...like chopped little tiny pieces. However, it was satisfactory. Not the best I've ever had. 4 star rating is for the panang curry and the chicken satay. Hands down, my go-to place for takeout. I love the tofu cashew nut. Love love love. I've also heard rave reviews from co-takeouters about their pad thai, basil fried rice, tofu eggplant, beef basil, and others. They are quick and friendly with delivery (I also live about a block and a half away so the relative speed may vary), prices are decent, and they have large portions (two meals in one, and its easily just as good reheated the next day). I find sometimes the spiciness varies, but is usually right on target. I have been here twice but the food really isn't that good. I haven't gotten sick from it but just tastes rather bland. Their daiquiris taste like slushies. The only pro is the location as its about a block from my apartment. I love thai food but with the large number of thai restaurants in the area, I can do better. My friend likes this place, but if I'm going to spend money eating out, I'm not going to eat somewhere mediocre. I met a group of friends here on Saturday afternoon. The hostess was accommodating and friendly. They had beers on a tap which was nice for the hangover i was nursing. I ordered the Chicken Herbs Soup(Tom Yum Gai), and maybe because I've never tried it, and my palate wasn't ready, but it was perhaps the most disgusting soup I've ever tried. I really like Thai food, and enjoy coconut milk, but this soup was really, really bad. That being said, I sampled the drunken noodles and pad thai of my friends and both of which were good, and helped get the horrible taste out of my mouth. Maybe its not fair to criticize a restaurant so harshly based only on one dish, but without the beer on tap; i might have not given this place any stars... OH, and the decor is wonderful! read more

Awesome place for tasty Thai food! Friendly and prompt service, seriously solid Thai cuisine, reasonably priced. The panang tofu and the vegetable drunken noodles are both favorites! You can request extra spiciness, if you so desire (as I always do). And their tofu is fabulous! - it's not overly chewy or spongy - delivers saucy flavor in little savory cubes of joy. Veggies are great in their sauces too, especially the snow peas. Oh yes, and outdoor seating snug to the sidewalk for those beautiful spring days... although it's pretty close to Pennsylvania Ave, so there's quite a bit of traffic through there. read more

Both times I have come here I have been absolutely exhausted for one reason or another and this place has hit the spot perfectly. Good food, fast, and the wait staff is very friendly. The place tends to be empty and I don't really know why. They have a nice patio for sitting out and drinking and the inside is small and comfy. The staff here is fantastic! We live around the corner so we've gotten to know them and they are always so attentive and polite which is part of the reason why I gave this place 4 stars. The food here is good (not amazing) but the real attraction is the $1.95 Yuengling drafts. Why go next door to 51st Amendment where the same beer is $3.50 when you can enjoy the same patio at Thai Coast for less? As for food, their soups are fabulous. The jungle curry is also good although when we asked for extra spicy, it was just standard spicy. And the whole fried fish is something ridiculous like $35 which we did not order so I can't say if it was worth that price. But overall, as a place where you can get a good appetizer for $6 and Yuengling drafts for a great price, it's pretty great. read more

Living only a block away, I would really love for this place to be good... however, it's not. I've given them a few chances and everytime, without fail, it's awful. My most recent let down was tonight; I spent $13.50 for "Pineapple Fried Rice" take out. When I got home, I discovered the microwaved remains of what was probably yesterday's leftovers. They didn't even bother to stir the rice, it was still in carton-shape! The box was about 25% diced red/green peppers, dominating any other flavors of the dish. There were only 2, count them, 2, shrimp in the box and both were stone cold (I spit them out). There were 6, count them, 6, small pieces of pineapple. The rice was hardly fried and overall, tasted like cardboard. My order was ready 10min after I placed it... probably because they only had to microwave it. The staff is friendly and the restaurant looks very clean and modern. I've never eaten inside, but it looks comfortable and they have $3/beer happy hours. For $13.50, I expected something at least half-way decent. WARNING: This restaurant made me VERY sick to my stomach. read more

Ok. I am hungry because of what happened to this review might be a bit harsh. I checked on Foodler.com to make sure this place delivered to me (I live in Penn Quarter). I called up, placed my order, carefully telling the woman my address and phone number. 30 minutes later, she called and apologized that "we cannot deliver to you, we are in georgetown!". I am starving, and now that it's 30 minutes later a lot of places are closed for delivery. Why on earth did she not tell me when I ordered that I was out of their delivery area? I agree with my fellow yelpers. Have returned to this spot an def need to down it a star. Had the fried rice. Did not have the taste synonymous with a Thai fried rice, plus the rice was overcooked, kind of mushy and almost looked like rice fragments. The accompanying tofu and veggies seemed like they were thrown in last minute, or after. They were fresh looking, but somehow did not have any of the absorbed flavor of the surrounding dish. What a disappointing lunch. The pros: the service was great. My server chatted with me and asked me questions about my trip to DC. When I travel alone, these little conversations are always nice. The cons: the massaman curry really was really quite terrible. I ate it because it was just as expensive as good curries I've had and I was hungry. There were about 3 chunks of potato and zero onions in it. It was thick - not in a good way and a very alarming orange color. The vegetables were clearly from a bag of frozen vegetables - never have I seen sweet corn kernels in a Thai curry - and had a buttery taste. While living in DC, I tried eating at a few Thai places and this was my favorite. The first time I went there with a Thai friend of mine who said that she judges a Thai restaurant by their green curry. Well, Thai Coast passed her test and we ended up going back for lunch all the time! I love their Chicken Cashew Nut (and Thai Iced Tea). I went here for lunch and it wasn't very busy yet every attempt to wave down the waitress did nothing. She would look at me but not come. She didn't refill our waters then had the nerve to charge $1 for extra rice! I mean rice is soooo damn cheap in the bag at the grocery store, there's no reason to charge extra for more when the serving they give of rice is tiny to begin with. Italian restaurants don't charge extra for bread. I got the Panang Tofu which had only a tiny bit of spinach and cabbage in it. One, yes one, slim slice of red bell pepper. I had the urge for pad thai, so I did what I always do - check Yelp and see where others mention having decent pad thai in my area. This place had a lot of good reviews, so I decided to try it out. The place looks nice, kind of small, but friendly service, outdoor seating, and a standard thai restaurant menu. I ordered the crispy spring rolls and pork pad thai. The spring rolls weren't any special..the pad thai was unremarkable as well. Decent, I suppose, and edible. Nothing to get excited about - if I ever order from this place again, I'll try something else. I will say though that I got take-out and when I called, they told me 15 minutes...I got there around 10 minutes after I called and my order was already packed and waiting. 3.5 stars Over recent years, I have been growing a true appreciation for Thai food; it had taken a while since many closer to where I grew up did not offer vegetarian options, but the DC area has been good to me and I have been immensely grateful for it. So, when my fiance and I were looking for a place to try downtown before attending a show at the Kennedy Center, we were thrilled to see a Groupon for Charmthai. We snatched it up and headed on over. The place is mediocre in appearance, with huge windows that make the main room unfortunately pretty cold in the winter freezing temperatures we've been having. There were space heaters precariously set up everywhere, but there were nice elements to it. The service was fine -- nothing special in either direction. We chatted easily as it was a fairly quiet night even for a Saturday. We started off with some of their specialty cocktails and were very much not disappointed by them. I had a Long Island Iced Tea and he had a Zombie, and both were sizable, fairly priced (for Downtown standards), and tasted sweet and yummy. For appetizers, I went for the spring rolls and he for the fried calamari. The fish was in a weird ring like an onion ring, which made us suspect they were not at all fresh. My spring rolls tasted fine but not spectacular. In terms of entrees, we both ordered noodle dishes, and I had my standard favorite, vegetable Pad See Ew. The meals were decent enough and had good flavor, but nothing stood out to us except how much more expensive the food was and how much smaller the portions were than our preferred Thai restaurants. At the end of the day, we had an enjoyable meal with very tasty and reasonably-priced drinks. Based on the prices alone, we probably wouldn't come back, because we've had much better Thai food for much less elsewhere, but if you're in the neighborhood and have a hankering for Thai, this place is worth a look. read more

Washington, D.C. is where ends meet for our country, with many foreign embassies and a wildly diverse population. This is a natural conduit for interesting restaurants, and when I made a recent trip there I certainly was not disappointed. The group I was with was in the mood for Thai. We stumbled across a place called Thai Coast. Decorated in light pastels and some decorative lights, the place is very laid-back with a bit of a 90's feel. The menu selection is pretty decent, with a good variety of spirits and some Thai beer (yum!). Pricing isn't bad for D.C. (which has a pretty high cost of living), but you should definitely watch what you get if you're on a budget. A friend of mine got the Peanut Chicken, and found it to be a bit mediocre. "There's a lot of peanuts, without much chicken. I'd give it an 8 out of 10," said Maddie Rozwat. Samantha Betysing found her selection of mussels to be more satisfying, however. "It's aromatic with basil, a nice little crunch with friend bell peppers," Betysing said. "The mussels are delicate but firm at the same time." I sampled the fresh spring rolls. While there was some yummy fresh basil, the bulk of it was cabbage. Other thai places I frequent add a little more variety, so I was a bit disappointed. I can't say that I know much about Thai food, but my friends and I all really enjoyed our lunch at CharmThai and will definitely be coming back. I'm used to relatively expensive prices in DC at this point, so I was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable lunch prices here, and even more so after seeing the portions. They're pretty darn big! I barely managed to finish my plate and was left so full. I ordered the beef pad see ew, and it was delicious. It was a little on the salty side, but it wasn't by too much and it was so good. Will definitely be ordering it again. The interior of the restaurant is quite nice and service was decent. For a lunch spot in DC, it is a good bang for your buck. I've been here twice thus far and really enjoy their food. As a plant-based person, all the options here can be made vegetarian friendly by replacing the main protein with vegetables instead. The service is quick and friendly. The dinner portion sizes are large, but the appetizers are on the smaller end. My party of 3 ordered a spring roll app and it only came with 3--- very delicious, but I wish there were at least a couple of more. Decent drunken noodles is not enough to make up for no air conditioning and unpleasant smells. I was hungry and wanted Thai food that was close by, so I stopped at Charm Thai. The outside temperature was about 98 degrees, so air conditioning would have been welcome. I was unpleasantly surprised that there was none; there were a few fans doing what they could, but that didn't suffice on one of the hottest days of the year. Additionally, there was a pungent smell of sewage mixed with soap percolating through the whole establishment. I am not sure what that was about, but it smelled disgusting and did not make for a pleasant dining experience. Thai Coast has good Thai Food. When I was working on a long project in DC, I would walk from the Marriott on M and get take out from Thai Coast about once a week. The food was always consistent and the waitstaff friendly. Food - First they have the best Nua-Num-Tok (beef salad) I have had since Thailand. The steak is tender and the dressing has the perfect blend of spicy and sour. For a main dish I would usually get their Chicken Cashew Nut. Again, (spicy is my thing) great taste with just the right amount of heat. The chicken is tender breast of chicken without any "mystery" pieces. I also liked the fact they did a decent job with Sticky rice & Mango. I know DC, especially near Gtown, has a lot of choices, but I always found myself going back to Thai Coast. The food here is pretty good. I actually prefer it to Thai Kitchen, which I do not find all that great. The Thai tea is one of the better Thai teas I've had. The atmosphere is casual and the wait staff is friendly. I had the drunken noodles and my co worker had the pad thai. He wasn't a fan of the pad thai but I didn't try any so I can't really comment. The drunken noodles were nice and spicy, but they also allow you to adjust the spiciness if you want something milder or spicier. I also tried the lemon grass soup (as always it's that tasty but weird at the same time) and the chicken satay. They gave us a lot of peanut sauce with the satays, which was good cause usually you get about half a teaspoon for 2 or 3 sticks. Overall, I've had better Thai, but this is not a bad choice. read more

A decent Thai (but slightly expensive) joint in the Foggy Bottom. I dropped by here to pick up some dinner for myself during my one-night stay in DC. A little skeptical from the previous reviews of this place, I reluctantly entered this cozy restaurant. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how they served and treated me. They took my order right away, and the food was made promptly. While waiting at the bar for my food to be brought out, a waiter poured me a glass of water and a cute refrigerator magnet to take home. (He even handed me a 15% coupon for my next visit, but I politely declined it since I was an out-of-towner.) The pad kee mao (Drunken Noodles) I ordered was average. While it was hearty and full of beef, bell peppers, and fresh flat rice noodles, the sauce just wasn't as authentic as I'd hoped. And at $16.50, I thought the price was a little steep. Whether it's ordering out or dining in, Charm Thai never lets me down! Their happy hours are fabulous and are valid on the weekend. I really enjoy the drunken noodles, pad Thai and the appetizers. The cashew chicken entree gives a little less food than other entrees, but it was still good. The service keeps the water glasses filled and are very nice. Making a reservation is simple although they aren't on Open Table. They are on GrubHub though and delivery is free over $15! They have Groupons sometimes. Bottom line: It's a great local place in Foggy Bottom with reasonably priced, great food and happy hour. I bring most of my visitors here! read more

We had a girls' dinner here a week or so ago. It was pretty typical of a thai restaurant, whereas the usual items were available on the menu. I actually just had thai the day before for lunch with some coworkers (at a different restaurant). And someone there had ordered the basil fried rice, and it looked good. However my coworker ordered not-spicy, and of the little bit I tried, it certainly was not spicy at all. So I decided to order the Basil fried rice here at Thai Coast. I figured that if I just ordered it without indicating to make it less spicy, it would have been the "two chili peppers" version, as described on the menu. But whatever was prepared, was not all that spicy. I guess I needed to specify "two chili peppers" next time. However it was still very tasty and I ate till the last grain of rice disappeared off my plate. The servings are quite large too. So, as always... hurray for gluttony! The price for dinner was very reasonable. With tip and tax, it was under $15. They did add gratuity onto the check though. Not sure if this is normal, or if it was because we had a larger group. Service was very attentive and seating a group of 8 girls was not a problem. I'd definitely come back if I am in the foggy bottom area and am in the mood for thai food. My only complaint was the women's bathroom upstairs. It was ridiculously HOT up there! It felt like a sauna-- at least 10 degrees hotter. read more

Decent safe food for your buck is how I'd sum up Thai Coast. We had the Curry Puffs, Chicken Basil, Lemon Grass Chicken Soup and Spring Rolls. We were on a Chicken fest by accident because they screwed up our "Beef Basil." The curry puffs and soup were probably the best dishes while the others were not very impressive at all. The chicken tasted the same in all the dishes which means they probably have a bucket of boiled chicken and just throw those bad boys into whatever people ask. Me no like that at all. However, i appreciate the decor of the place and how they present their dishes in artsy fartsy serveware. read more
