I'm really sensitive to writing negative reviews. But this place deserves it. My wife and I were looking to have a few beers and some appetizers/dinner. This is a great location because it is on the harbor and has covered outdoor seating. We were seated and I immediately noticed the menu was disgustingly filthy - see the photo I posted. Are they not ashamed? How hard is it to present customers with a clean paper menu? Anyway. I ignored that as a simple oversight. It happens - nobody is perfect. But then my Guinness arrived and the beer glass was just obviously dirty. So I asked for a new one (see photo) and it was slightly better but still not clean. I ended up drinking the Guinness out of the can. I ordered a second Guinnes and it arrived in a glass. The top of that glass was dirty too!! So I asked if they could give me another Guinness in the can, which they did. We had a mushroom crab appetizer and, at $9.95 it was just okay. A few beers and an appetizer came to $38. If you get trapped in this tourist trap, you have been warned - and will only have yourself to blame. read more

My summer childhood fav for lobster rolls.. last summer, however, I excitedly brought C there in his first time to Cape Cod.. our bill for four lobster rolls was $120. Cue Happy Gilmore: The price is wrong, bitch! With the ridic price jump, they tasted a little less delicious. The setting is great, which seemed to be why it was so crowded - because people weren't coming back for the food or average drinks. Bottled beer is the way to go at the Chart Room! To be fair, we only had two different types of drinks so perhaps the other drink types were out of this world. The Bloody Mary, for example, came without olives - they were added later on request. Food was not good according to 3/4 in our group. 1/4 said the lobster roll was OK. By far, the worst part was an overly energetic young waiter, unaware of the benefits and aesthetics of the interactions between modern hygiene and serving food. On delivery of the food, he wiped his brow and lip (then delivered the first dish), used his finger to clean up some stray sauce or liquid on the tray and then sucked his finger "clean" (please note the use of quotation marks around the word "clean"; then delivered the second dish) and finally, picked his nose (and delivered the last dish). I've been coming here for 20+ years & it's always been consistently great. Last night was just unacceptable. I know it was the first busy weekend of the summer, but there should have been a cocktail(water) person that just focused on people that were waiting for service. The new menu was interesting with a Jerk Chicken app & the addition of crab & oysters on the menu. Some prices have gone up but the sandwiches & steamers(19.99) are the same. The veal medallion special was tasty but the veal pieces were the size of chicken fingers & were thick. Train the staff & get rid of the young high school waiters that can't handle the pressure. Hire mature & experienced staff. 40 minutes is a very long time to wait for any service, albeit the table was outside & the view was perfect! read more

We went in during the busiest time on a Saturday night and the hostess found us a spot in the lounge where we were served within 5 minutes. We had the lobster salad and a cheeseburger along with a few mudslides. It was an amazing time! Great staff and amazing food. read more

I should say, that the Chart Room deserves 5 stars for location and sitting out on the Adirondack chairs with friends having cocktails and some of their food items such as the lobster roll, swordfish, egg and anchovy dressing on salad and the scrod with lobster newburg sauce and mudslides, however everything else without these items would have closed this place long ago. Their reservation policies changes at will, sometimes they take them, sometimes they don't, and as a loyal local customer who lives in Cataumet year-round who would love to come there more, I get treated pretty badly, unless you are the hoi polloi in town or friends of the owners. Sad, but true. They have standing reservations for some people when it suits them. The wait is always much longer than you are told. Also, they should have a 50 foot radius for no smoking - it's pretty gross walking into the front door and have everyone blowing smoke in your face. The place changes after Labor Day and you can finally get in, but during the summer there is no organization or consistency on food and dirty silverware. It would also be nice if they invested with a website - would be nice to see menu, specials, dates open, times and even their reservation policy, or lack thereof. I was told they don't need the extra business- so they don't need one. I hope the Chart Room reads this and listens to the locals - we are the ones that live here the other 10 months of the year. Basically you want to go to the Chart Room because of its space and atmosphere. It's right on the water, with some really awesome outside seats where one can and should enjoy a drink while waiting for a table (since you will be waiting whether or not you have a reservation). The inside is pretty great too, there is a piano in the main room that has a wrap around table which attracts awesomely drunk ladies and gents looking for good time on a friday night. If you're lucky, you might even catch a song or two. Other than that, Evie K is completely right--the food is definitely a one star. If you're really careful--say you don't pick the prime rib special which comes to your table packing enough fat to kill a cow (no pun intended)--you should be alright. They have some decent seafood, emphasis on 'some'. However, if you're in the area, making it to the Chart Room is still worth it, and I try to to get there every summer. read more

Great food, not so great service. We had scrod, scallops, clams casino and a turkey club for the non fish eater. All was really good, flavorful and fresh! Can't say enough about the food. As I raised my fork to my mouth someone came over and asked if they could take my plate. Really?! I'm still eating! That happened twice. We had to go get the waiter to ask for a spoon. When we asked if they had bread, the waiter responded "yeah, do ya want some?" Peoples credit cards were were hung from a clothes line. I could have easily taken a photo of them then charged away. While the Chart Room is nearly always very busy, I found their stuffed quahog and 1/2 lobster roll delicious. The lobster roll is made just the way I like it - lots of lobster, very little mayo. Even ordering the 1/2 size, I had plenty to take home. Quahog was just spicy enough and served with warm, drawn butter. If you want a quiet, intimate place - this is not it. It's noisy and fun. Staff - with the exception of Wendy who's been there for over 25 years, is young, but friendly. It's a tough room outside because it's always packed, but we were very pleased. read more

Pretty standard. The food is nothing special and pretty much what you would get at any type of waterfront, seafood place. I had a turkey sandwich on dark rye. It came with coleslaw which was way too sweet. My salad was iceberg lettuce with some red onion. Delish! Sadly i can buy these ingredients at 7-eleven. The lobster roll isnt on the menu, so it has to be requested. Initially it comes stuffed into a tomato. They do this with tuna and chicken salad as well, but charge 25bucks for a tomato stuffed with lobster. A) that sounds very geriatric hello, look at the people here) and B) just kind of gross. They dont tell you you can get the lobster as a roll...but you can. Huge chunks of lobster. So that was a plus. Other than that...dismal. The space is actually pretty cool. There is a lot of history to it. It was an old barge that still contains orig. pieces. They also have this really cool piano with a round table built around it that you can sit and eat at. The Chart Room has jumped the shark. It's still a great place to watch the sunset, but the wait for drinks/a table for dinner is simply too long. We made a dinner reservation for 8:30, and despite arriving at 7:30 and checking in, we weren't seated until 8:45. But the MOST disappointing: the new waitstaff and overall dining experience. They've now got inexperienced college age girls hovering around tables, waiting to clear your food, along side waitresses who have zero care when putting plates/utensils on the table (our girl actually threw a spoon on the table, seemingly towards my boyfriends chowder). In addition, my boyfriends surf and turf had the consistency of cardboard (the swordfish) and my baked scallops were very rubbery. After dining at the Chart Room each summer for the past 20 summers, I'm looking for a new go-to place for dinner, and recommended my family do as well. read more

I used to think the Chart Room was all about meeting up with friends and having cocktails outside, but lately the food has been much better than in the previous years. The diner selection would work for most people, but seafood is their specialty. The meals are always good, especially the baked stuffed lobster, swordfish with anchovies or the lobster sandwich. They do need to lose the "family style" vegetables which are always overdone, but other than that the meals are pretty straight up and good. This place is always packed, so you need to either make reservations or wait until later in the season. We do both, but prefer to go when it's less crowded, although lately it's always busy! read more

We had dinner here again on Tuesday evening and it was outstanding. We started with drinks followed by appetizers. ..chicken soup for Beverly and stuffed quahog for me. For an entrée Beverly had scallops and I had swordfish with anchovy butter. The dishes came with a fresh garden salad, potato, vegetables, and rolls that were fresh from the oven. The fish dishes were very fresh and delicious. After dinner we enjoyed mudslides on the patio while enjoying a magnificent sunset. The service we received was great especially on a very busy evening. I have come here to try their mudslides a couple of times but a friend was requesting to have lunch here for a while so we finally made it. She had the Scallops dish and loved it. I had the Scrod in Lemon Butter and I have to say it was bland. It didn't really taste like anything even though it had bread crumbs. Luckily the home fries were delicious and tasty so I had something to enjoy. I will stick to coming here for drinks and apps. The Crab cake app was definitely worth it. I want to have it again! The chart room is a great place to have dinner after a long day on the beach. The reason I gave it was a 3 was the wait and at five it takes forever. This was always a go to spot on our weekly visits to see my father in law. Great location and beautiful view. Class cape atmosphere. Always got the lobster salad along with a quahog. Went yesterday for the first time in years. Ordered my usual lobster salad even though I knew the price was over $40.00. I was so disappointed. The lettuce portion was pre-cut salad mix with shredded carrots, two cherry tomatoes, and two cucumbers. Maybe a half cup of lobster salad which had no taste. Bland. My little cup of Italian dressing was a creamy gelatinous type. My dining partner ordered the lobster salad on bread. He had a bit more of the lobster but commented that it was lacking in flavor. WORST restaurant experience ever. Was on vacation with my family of 9 people. When we made reservation I requested a table with a view of ocean. When we got there The hostess sat us at a table that sat 6 people in the back corner of the restaurant, so we had to squeeze around a small table. It was 90 degrees and there was no air conditioning. Felt like we were in a pressure cooker. We wanted to leave but we had two small hungry children and at that point it was too late to make a reservation anywhere else. When we politely asked for another table management was rude. Half way through the meal the hostess finally offered us another table so we inconveniently got to move, but at that point we were sweating bullets and our whole experience was ruined. I got baked stuffed shrimp and it was very greasy. The baked stuffed lobster was overcooked and dry. The only two good meals were the lobster salad and crabmeat salad. Over $700 later we walked out drenched in perspiration and very unsatisfied. I wouldn't even give it one star but that was the lowest score I could give. Maybe you would have better luck but my advice is don't take a chance.....STAY AWAY! read more

I have visited the Chart Room six or seven times over the past several years. The two stars are for setting and the evening piano bar which we enjoyed and remembered. However I recently took visiting California friends for brunch; while the setting is still interesting (no piano bar for lunch) we found the food simply dreadful. My "medium-rare" steak was near well done, leather-like. I realize seafood should be a better choice but not for our brunch. Two members unfortunately had the crab cake, apparently just out of the box it must have bee frozen in. On reflection, we should all have sent the food back but ....... The only reason it gets more than one star is location. Great location, right on the water. We sat inside because there was a ridiculous wait to sit outside. It was so loud, we had to yell in order to be heard by the waitress and vice-versa. Poor service. Waitress dropped off our meals and never checked back. Never had our water refilled. It was so crowded and overpacked you couldn't go to the bathroom without bumping into multiple tables (and staff). I ordered some special - filet over risotto. The filet was cooked well and was pretty decent, but the risotto was so salty, it was INEDIBLE. And this is coming from someone who loooves salt. So we went here when we tried to go to Lobster Trap for Sunday lunch at about noon time and it was just hopelessly busy looking. Yelp was down and had to just sort of go by map search. We got here and thought we were looking at same situation but they called us within 5-10 minutes. The seafood menu is simple and straight forward, Lobster salad, salmon, Schrod, scallops and such and all baked or broiled. No fried seafood. They do have burger, hot dog, and pastrami sandwich. We started with some chowder for my niece, my brother and I. I ordered a bowl but the current batch ran out and they have my niece the bowl, and my brother and I cup portions but I was okay with that because that was all she was getting. The chowder was decent but seemed just potatoes and a small amount of clams. Didn't get any onion or celery, maybe they were puréed or maybe just not much left in bottom of pot. 3/5 on chowder, maybe wouldn't order if I came again. I was hoping for fried clams but settled for a burger on Portuguese bread with potato salad. If you don't ask, nothing but a pickle spear with it. My wife got the baked scallop. $17 lunch plate with cole slaw and string beans that were a tad over cooked but a good portion of scallops. MIL got the Salmon, that was a very small portion it seemed that she chose potato and string bean with. Salmon was over cooked but we prefer medium rare to medium. My brother chose chicken pot pit. $15 seems a bit much for dish with puff pastry dropped in top. He said the flavor was good and there seemed like a decent amount of good chicken breast in dish. The service was superb. The place was crazy busy and the food came in a reasonable amount of time and the waitress was very attentive. This was the saving grace for the dining experience. Would not be my first choice for seafood dinner out but the food is good. read more

Known to the locals as home, the Chart Room is not the fanciest but it's authentic Cape Cod. The chowder is excellent. Big and chunky, just like new englanders like it. The mud slides are notorious for being both delicious and strong so try one (or two)! read more

We were biking in the area and it was convenient for lunch. I was hesitant due to its low rating, but I'm really glad we came. I had a delicious avocado and crab salad. My hubby had a comforting chicken pot pie. He said the stuffed quahog was the best that he has had. They have an ample wine list. The waterfront location can't be beat. And the service was warm and very attentive. The owner even had her granddaughter working for her, which I loved. Don't be turned off by its stars, this is a lovely spot to dine, as long as you're not looking for a gourmet experience. read more

I would like to preface this with the fact that I have worked in the restaurant industry for years (and in high tourist areas to boot) Ok so I am giving this place 3 stars for 3 distinct reasons and taking off two stars for what at any other place would have made it a 1 star rating. This is a 3 because our server (Conor) was AWESOME. He was accommodating even though he was clearly in the weeds. Our lobster rolls were HUGE and delicious. Our mudslides were strong and great. But and it's a huge BUT for me... the hostesses were so incredibly rude and absolutely horrible at their jobs. We waited for over 2 hours (which would have been ok if it weren't for the fact that our table was ready in around 1 hour) They claimed they "couldn't find us" despite us waiting no more than 10 feet away from them. They were the rudest people I have ever met. They proceeded to sit another party of 3 before us even though we were standing right there and then claimed they always sit reservations first but then sat people off the waiting list before us. If they were polite and even pretended that they were doing their jobs that would be one thing but they were unkind and uninterested. To the management of this restaurant, get rid of your rude old hostesses. They aren't even trying to do their jobs. Your servers, bartenders, and kitchen staff are busting their butts to make the experience great for your patrons but your hostesses are the absolute worst. Thank everyone else mentioned because if it weren't for them, the hostesses would have ruined it for us. read more

The food, service, and atmosphere of this place is top notch. The mudslides were amazing and the Adirondack chairs to enjoy them outside were extremely relaxing with a beautiful view of the marina. After our first round of drinks we went inside for lunch and our meals were ginormous! I had the chicken salad in a tomato which was outstanding and the rest of our table had the jerk chicken lollipops, the avocado salad and the turkey BLT. Well, did my annual trip to the CR to see if things have changed since my last horrible experience. Yes, a good friend talked me into it. Said the specials were great this year. We all know the CR is the place for sunsets and mudslides after a day of boating. Has been forever, but if you are charging $32 per plate for an entre, it better be damn good. Or one might think. I ordered a speacial, sounded great, Grilled swordfish with fried shrimp on top and a butter sauce over it. Now I know the CR does not have a frialator, so I was expecting it to come pan flash fried or sauted with a flour dredge. NOPE! It was literally Gorton's frozen shrimp or at least thats what I thought. Might be an insult to Gorton's. Whatever it was, it didnt even come shaped like a shrimp, was horribly freezer burned, and was still cold in its center. I spit out the first one it was so mushy and bad. Dont know why i think this place will go back to its old self. Oh well, the swordfish was good, and the drinks and sunset keep you coming back! :( Suggestion to the chef, stop trying to be fancy, your not...stick to the old simple classics. read more

I use to go to this restaurant every Saturday night for 15 years and then I stopped. I just went again and was reminded as to why I quit eating there. I had a 7:30 reservation and checked in ontime. I was told by the snippy hostess that she had no idea when my table would be ready. I proceeded to wait and give it a chance. By 8:30, I was still behind two other parties and just left.
