The batter tasted like it was straight flour and they were soaked in oil, as though it hadn't been hot enough. When I quietly pointed this out to our waitress she said "Yeah, I noticed they looked weird when I brought them out." ! Oh, gee, but you served them anyway? And she didn't comp them on the bill. My husband had a sandwich, which he said was rather dry. Today I dropped by again. Different waitress. I was just going to order a Bloody Mary, but she said I had to try the special, a chocolate martini with a hint of raspberry. Okay, sounded good. It took over 15 minutes to arrive and honestly tasted like fruit punch. I didn't complain as I figured I took a chance and so forth. Then the bill came. It was $13!! My family was hungry and stumbled into this gem after the 2 previous restaurants were closed for the day. We were ravenous and greeted by a wonderful man who sat us at a table and served us as well. It was a great suggestion because everyone at the table, even my picky 8-year old, loved them. They came with a spicy sauce that was equally good. I ordered the Shrimp PoBoy, and there were no regrets. It was the first true PoBoy I had on the trip. The shrimp were excellent, and the fries were good, too. My husband got the Taste of New Orleans with Jambalaya, Chicken & Sausage Gumbo, and Crawfish Étouffée. The Jambalaya "outrageously good" according to my husband. I tried it all and really liked the Crawfish Étouffée, it had good flavor. The Chicken & Sausage Gumbo was better than most (according to my husband). Everyone at the table was happy with our food. The service was very, very good. Don't stumble on this place, go there with a purpose to eat good food! The only negative thing I can say is that their restrooms weren't stellar. In order to get to them you have to leave the building, go across a courtyard, and then you come to a barn door that is indeed the door to the restroom. Great environment and always busy! I came in for lunch after walking the city and immediately honed in on their fried shrimp plate, assuming that it would be good. They have a great open air concept for the restaurant and a gorgeous courtyard to sit in as well. The service was great and the decor matched, my only problem was with the shrimp. Now, you can't really go wrong with shrimp, but the only problem is when restaurants will just season with salt and pepper. You guys HAVE to start playing on that Cajun flavor y'all are known for in this state. It's one of the reasons why we're here! We are so pleased with our experience at Chartres. The staff was accommodating, helpful, and knowledgeable. Good prices, quite an array of choices on the menu, and the portions were generous. What do you need after a long travel day and little sleep the night before? Good food, that's what. We were staying at the Marriott, so we decided just to wander down the street to see what was around. Chartres House appeared when we turned a corner, and a cute little table in the sun is what sold me. We had a seat, ordered some wine, and perused the menu. They were actually out of the wine I wanted, but I subbed it for a chardonnay that worked out just fine. This trip would have probably been five stars but the service was pretty weird. First, our server acted totally annoyed that we wanted to use the Yelp check-in offer of a free appetizer with two entrees. Then she just had a bit of an attitude the rest of the time... she loosed up a little, but it definitely was awkward for some reason. Regardless, the food we had was so very good. Thinking about ordering the fried green tomatoes? Do it. The accompanying sauces are some of the best I've had, and the tomatoes were fried, yes, but still light. I wish I had some right now. After those, I had the roast beef po' boy, and it didn't disappoint at all. The meat was cooked perfectly, and the blend of mayo, lettuce, tomato, and other goodies made it filling & memorable. Thanks to my Chicago Yelp buddy, Nick M., for this solid recommendation for good food and drink. Location, location, location! Chartres was my favorite street to walk from my hotel to Jackson Square Park and beyond, and C-House Cafe's corner location with open air dining makes it an easy and attractive stop for lunch, dinner, or late night drinks. A host stand outside is a nice touch, and service was friendly and casual. The bar tender was regaling some Canadians with his knowledge of Cannuck whiskeys, and this would be a great place to belly up to the bar and soak up the Big Easy, far from the craziness of Bourbon Street. I soaked up a bowl of the Blue Crab and Corn Bisque, and it was amazing. I was a little tired and missed ordering the Taste of New Orleans sampler of Jambalaya, red beans and rice, and Gumbo; but I ordered the Jambalaya by itself, and it was a huge portion of rice, spice, and Andouille sausage, and was excellent. Chartres House has all kinds of liquors chilled and on tap, and many offerings of Abita bottled beers. An Abita Purple Haze (raspberry wheat) cut through the spice of the Jambalaya well, but I'm pretty sure any old cold swill would've tasted just as heavenly, as I enjoyed the warm night air of New Orleans! read more

My favorite place in all of NOLA, funny enough turns out to be one of the oldest places spanning back to the year of 1795 (actually the plot of land it's on, was recognized back in 1722 owned by a Arnaud Roche). I think I like it so much because it's the perfect place to relax and watch people go by. I ended up here a couple of times during my trip and sometimes just by accident. The staff is all about the Nawlins kindness. They even have people outside to welcome you in. Everybody is quick to take care of you and they make you feel like it is a pleasure to do so. They would let you stay here all day if you wanted. I would give extra stars on the service if I could. The building itself is beautiful (at least to me). French doors cover two sides of the building, facing the street on both the main floor and second. Small tables for you to seat and enjoy the view and a bar along the wall. You walk through a little hall and doorway only to have it open up to a fantastic courtyard with a water fountain. The upstairs from my understanding is a large room to where you can reserve for parties or whatever. The whole building has just... charm. The food is perfect, simple elegant in design. Great favors, you get that authentic creole spice, but nothing is overwhelming. The menu has everything from bar food to contemporary dinner. Things might have been fried but they weren't greasy at all. I highly recommend the Craw-fish Cakes, Red Beans and Rice with some Chicken Tenders, oh and my favorite in the whole city actually the best I've had ever... the Bloody Mary's. Unbelievable!! So I started 2017 in the great city of New Orleans! Of course, my first stop was at Chartres House. This place was a highlight of my last visit to The Big Easy. Sadly, I must update my review to dock off some stars. Food: I had pretty much the same exact order that I did the last time. Crawfish poboy (instead of shrimp) and the crawfish bread. So here's the thing, nothing was as I remember. The poboy was large as usual but not as hot and fresh as I remember. The biggest let down was the crawfish bread. This version of crawfish bread was soggier, and more processed cheese on top. The only reason I am docking 2 stars rather than 1 is because of the price. Having walked all day, sustaining ourselves primarily on beignets and beer, it was time to get food. NOW. After two places we had bookmarked ended up having ridiculous waits, we decided to just walk until we found a place to eat. We ended up at Chartres House. While I wouldn't say I recommend it, there are some things worth noting. First of all, let's get this out of the way: Of all the great service we had in New Orleans, the best was definitely here at Chartres House. I'm so sorry that I don't remember her name, but she deserves her own parade (and in a city like New Orleans, I suspect this is entirely do-able.) She had short curly red hair and was awesome. We were never left wanting for anything, she talked to us about the offerings enthusiastically but like a real person, not just a recommendation-bot. I'm pretty sure if we lived in the same state we'd be best friends. She is rad. However, not all the food we ate matched up. The duck quesadilla appetizer was ridiculously delicious and I would probably go back and eat two of them for a meal. However, instead I was tempted by the Chartres Burger, which was the biggest culinary mistake of my trip. A burger topped with sausage and on some sort of special bun, it SOUNDED good, but no dice my friends. The breakfast style sausage just didn't jive. The burger was very juicy, which on it's own would be good, but that plus the sausage plus the super soft bun made everything incredibly mushy. Texturally, this burger grossed me out. It needed a bit of a crunch or something, ANYTHING to make it not seem like you're just biting into one big mush ball. Never again. That being said, I liked the place alright. Chartres House was our "fancy" dining option during a trip to New Orleans. My vegetarian travel mate and I wanted to go to a nice sit down restaurant in the French Quarter for dinner. We were seated in the interior dining area (versus the bar or on the balcony). Where we sat did not matter to us because the entire restaurant was beautiful, charming, and what you would imagine a NOLA French Quarter restaurant to look like. It has huge romance potential and would be a great date meal location. We started with an appetizer, the Spinach and Artichoke Dip. It was served with these fried bow-tie pasta, which I never had before, but then afterwards wanted to try to make at home (it's still on my try-to-make-at-home to-do list). For the main dishes, I had the Crawfish Stuffed Catfish and my veggie friend had the Grilled Portobello Mushrooms. Confession - I'm a notorious "sampler" so I can definitely attest to the deliciousness of both dishes. :) The only criticism (and it's minor) was the chattiness of our waitress. While she was very friendly and helpful, she tended to linger by our table a little too long and engage us in conversation with her. I could tell that it somewhat annoyed my dining partner, but her service made for a memorable meal that we still talk about today. But regardless of whether you get our waitress or not, you'll remember the dining experience that you have at Chartres House. It will leave an impression with you. read more

We came across Chartres House while walking around the French quarter and came in. We were sat on the outdoor balcony upstairs by a really nice hostess. We ordered the spinach artichoke dip for an appetizer and O M G .. AMAZING!!! They give you the dip with crunchy bow tie pasta, I could of ate just those with out the spinach artichoke. For my lunch I got the blackened chicken sandwich and it came with a side of fries. The sandwich was great, and the fries were also really good. The server was really nice, but the service wasn't too good. He only came to our tablets take our order, bring our food, and than bring the check. So we couldn't order another drink or anything else we wanted. They definitely have the best spinach artichoke I've ever eaten, and the food in general was great. My wife and I recently visited my family in Louisianan and we thought it would be fun to take some time to wander around New Orleans before heading out to where they live in Alexandria. Being lunch time, both my wife and I thought that an entree each would be quite a bit more than either of us needed to eat, so we decided to share the "Taste of New Orleans" which was a combination of red-beans and rice, gumbo, and some jambalaya. The red-beans and rice was wonderful! It was thick and full of flavor without being too spicy. The jambalaya was "so-so," but I think that was just because it had much more tomato than what I grew up on. It wasn't bad, but I didn't think it was as good as the other two dishes, but my wife liked it the best of all. The outstanding dish, to me, was the chicken and sausage gumbo. Full of flavor with the perfect viscosity, I ended up thinking back to this gumbo for a couple of days, each time saying to myself, "I hope I can make some that good when I get home." It was much more spicy than the other two dishes, so my wife and I decided that she would finish off the jambalaya and I would finish up the gumbo. The best part was as I got down to the end of the bowl, I used some of the house french bread to sop up the dregs and was treated to a wonderful combination. My wife and I both thought that this was quite a good meal and I think that we might visit this restaurant again if we are close by. It's hard to commit to this decision since there are so many wonderful restaurants in the French Quarter, but that meal might convince me that is a good plan. read more

We got: - Mufaletta: Comes with fries and my hubby LOVED it! - Crawfish pasta: The menu said it came with fettuccine noodles, but I got spaghetti instead. It had had lumps of crawfish both peeled and in the sauce/deep fried. The dish wasn't 'out of this world' but it was good enough for me! :) - Bread pudding: It was filled with peaches and raisins.. We wandered all over the French Quarter trying to find a place for dinner one night that was a little nicer than average, we came across this place after I looked it up on yelp and saw the good reviews, we were even more impressed when we walked up and saw a totally open bar/patio setting downstairs. In October the temperature was perfect and they had all the french doors open so we got to sit basically outside while enjoying the great food. We started off with the blue crab and corn soup which was really yummy. It was my husband's favorite thing he ate the entire time we were there. I got the red beans and rice and the portion was HUGE It had some little addons too, I think an entire sausage link cut into sections, two of their thin crispy chicken strips (just a taste of them) and some bread. Husband got the catfish and he loved it as well. One of my coworkers got a stuffed fish that was pretty delicious but I don't remember the name of it, and my other co-worker got the sampler platter which came with red beans and rice (awesome), etouffee (yummy), and a gumbo that was also pretty good according to my coworker even though I didn't get to taste it. The portions were so large we all took to go boxes and the red beans and rice re-heated pretty well! The highlight of the meal had to be our waiter though, he was HILARIOUS and so great. In comparison with the service I got at some other places it was crazy how attentive and nice the staff here was, and they were pretty busy! Lively place. I ate at the bar, while the guy next to me gesticulated wildly over the Final Four on the TV set overhead as his friend tried to calm him down. Had a bowl of jambalaya. I don't know if it was made with brown rice or not, but it tasted as if it was. It was very good once I got used to it, one of the best. read more

Came here about 45 minutes before this place closed and sat at the bar. The bartender was super chill and drink prices aren't too bad. We stayed until a little past closing time, but the bartender didn't even try to kick us out. Didn't try any of their food so I can't comment on the food. The place was pretty empty by this point; there were only a couple other customers in the restaurant. It seems like this would be a nice place to hang out if I had come here earlier. read more

I wanted to take my musically savvy friend to One Eyed Jacks, but they weren't open yet. We decided to just keep walking and ducked into the Chartres House. The prices are surprisingly low for being located in the French Quarter. We didn't get food, but everything moving past us looked scrumptious. I can't wait to find a reason to go back and give the food a shot. Anyway, my friend and I tried all the different microbrews on tap and watched the US and China play each other in a soccer match. Needless to say, we had a ball! Our bartender also helped make our experience a memorable one by staying engaged in our conversation and giving really interesting facts and info about all the microbrews we tried.
