This is just your average restaurant inside a bar. I went here with friends as they both raved about the Blackened Chicken Alfredo, which we all three ordered. It was a very tasty dish which included parmesan cream sauce, penne pasta and the blackened chicken breast. I really liked the fact that the parmesan cream sauce was not a heavy alfredo sauce. It had just enough sauce (very light) so that it did not overwhelm the entire dish. Although the food and service were good, I cannot recommend the alcoholic drinks that were made that night. The waitress asked it we wanted "doubles" when she took our order and we all agreed. When the drinks came, all three of us said we could hardly taste the alcohol. One friend said since they put the "double" in a tall glass that may have diluted the alcohol content. However, I had a martini in a regular martini glass so there is no reason why my drink was this weak. I asked the waitress specifically if these drinks were doubles and she said yes. Doing some work in the French Quarter this morning and decided to make it a day and set up in the Chartres House as my Field-Office-For-the-Day. Because I CAN. Turned out to be a great choice - for several reasons. Firstly, LOCATION. I'm in the heart of the freaking French Quarter - been showing condos all morning long. It's a beautiful day. Life is good. Secondly, AMBIENCE. This restaurant - situated on the corner of Chartres and Toulouse - has two sides open air seating to the street. It's a hot day but it is beautifully comfortable. Great for people watching and kicking back a little. In the background is some nice Blues Music. Thirdly, TEVIN. Tevin is my bartender/server for the day and he is just ON his game. Friendly, attentive, professional - everything you want and nothing you don't want. I'd come back here just because he works here. Fourth, the FOOD. While there a number of good looking options - I chose the Blackened Chicken Alfredo. That paired with a Vodka Cranberry and a Tin Roof Juke Joint IPA just WORKED. A lot of places within the French Quarter feel touristy and Chartres House is certainly no exception. While they remain closed during COVID times, I have come here enough times over the years with NOLA newbies and locals to appreciate all they bring to the table. Not only are they located in one of the more popular parts of the French Quarter, but it's actually pretty hard to miss them. The building is pretty versatile as they have so many options for folks: al fresco dining, private rooms, a nice bar, balcony dining (with a view, naturally) with a festive ambiance to boot. Even the bathrooms are clean, which is always a plus. The food ranges from excellent to super average, depending on what one orders. The natchitoches meat pies, crawfish bread, sandwiches (muffaletta and po'boys), and classic cajun'y dishes like the gumbo and jambalaya are fabulous. Their boudin is a bit sus at times, the duck empanadas are very meh, alligator tails are disappointing, and the red beans and rice are subpar. We've had all of them numerous times and while their drinks are nice and potent, they don't make the food taste better. (#1) The bigger issue I have is the prices and portions. For what they serve, it can get very pricey very quickly. I know it's in a touristy area of NOLA and the price we pay for convenience in the quarter is more often expected than not. Service also varies at times, but I'm hoping that once they reopen that things will take a turn for the better. Worst food I've ever had in NOLA. Fried shrimp platter had smallest shrimp I've ever seen. Tasteless and just sad.

We were not impressed. We expected something over the top. Shrimp Po-boy was mostly bread and not flavorful. The staff/ hostesses were cutting up and talked to each the whole time. Our waitress Whynter was good and sweet though. Concerned with how we saw food handled with long fake nails reaching in the food as they were walking by to serve it. 15.00 a plate should have be so much more. Fortunately it was a perfectly warm afternoon and their doors were wide open, so I chose a seat by the sidewalk. In just a few moments, a cordial young lady by the name Clevona came by to greet me. The short conversation was: "I'd recommend trying our Crawfish Etouffee, Muffaletta, Cajun Jambalaya or maybe you might want to try one of our Po Boys." So decision made, food ordered, my Shrimp Po Boy was in front of me before I knew it. Crispy, lightly breaded shrimp were piled on that deliciously toasted French bread that had just the right amount of crisp and crunch. It came "fully dressed" with fresh tomatoes, crisp lettuce, crisp dill pickles and some garlic mayonnaise. It also came with more tasty fries than any 3 people should eat at one sitting. Now while I relished my Po Boy, that Hurricane just kinda fell flat for me. It was Kool Aid sweet and had very little oompf to it but I manned up and drank it down anyways. My search for the perfect Hurricane would continue at my next stop... Chartres House provided me with a very pleasing gastronomic but not alcoholic afternoon. I've been here before... not sure which trip. (I remember the loo being in a courtyard out back.) I'm being quite generous with 4 stars. We sat upstairs on the balcony over looking the street. The wait staff all seemed to have to run up and down rickety stairs to deliver food and drinks which may have contributed to the lackluster service. We only saw our actual waiter initially taking our order then when the bill came. A couple of other folks were also taking orders and delivering food and drinks around us. We ordered a Yuengling and appetizer of fried gator along with ice tea. The gator was as tough as a marine drill Sargent with hemorrhoids. But because it came decades after we ordered it, one of the waitresses (maybe manager?) comped the gator. So we never bothered to tell her it was like eating fried dinosaur ass. So why 4 stars? Because this place is set up to be one hella great venue for Mardi Gras. And you can tell by the set up that theirs bars and service facilities to take care of upstairs patrons. Bring plenty of beads or a easy access shirt or blouse to flash your junk to collect some. Because from the upstairs vantage point you will have a solid perch to let it all hang out! read more

When the French Quarter was crowded on a major holiday, this restaurant was able to seat a party of 7 within 5 minutes. In addition, the waitress was easily able to split checks with no qualms whatsoever. We were also able to use a yelp coupon on an appetizer, and the server was extremely accommodating. The drinks were fairly expensive but delicious, and our spinach and artichoke dip appetizer was absolutely amazing! 2 people in our party ordered the dip as their main entree after we tried it as an appetizer. For entrees, we ordered shrimp po' boys, red beans and rice, more spinach and artichoke dip, and Alfredo pasta. All our food was to die for! The only complaint was that the pasta was cold, but management was quick to heat up the plate and apologize profusely. All in all, this was a fantastic dining experience that I would recommend to anyone visiting the French Quarter. read more

I didn't have it in my heart to not tip but I wish I did because the service was horrible. We were seated and given menus. We ordered drinks and meals. It was over an hour between ordering the food and getting it. We never said anything or complained about the wait but the waitress was very rude to us and didn't offer an apology for the wait at all. She didn't bring the water we asked for in that whole hour wait so when I asked again she said "give me a second." She didn't come back until she brought us the check before we ever said we were ready for it. We were very nice to her and didn't complain at all and she was nothing but rude. The receipt says her name was Evelyn but can't be sure since she didn't tell us her name. And no it was not very busy. There were max two other tables and it was early afternoon on a week day. The food was fine but you'll get comparable or better meals at any of the other restaurants around. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Chartres House but I still took off a star because the sampler plate was good but not the best I've had in New Orleans. With that being said I had a delicious hot chocolate (yes I'm really behind on my reviews, please forgive me) topped with whipped cream. Did I mention they have a working fireplace in the restaurant but unfortunately for my friend and i the tables were occupied around it. Anywho, definitely try the crawfish bread! HOLY GUACAMOLE BATMAN! It's good! And yes I'm well aware that was a silly expression but seriously, it's good! My friend ordered the red beans and rice which came with sausage and chicken strips. Now am I the only person in the world that thought it was strange that red beans and rice came with chicken too? I had never seen that before but it was good. I'm a fan! For dessert we had the praline cheesecake with strawberries and it was simply divine! What made the experience so great was that Elizabeth was a wonderful server who was attentive but not hovering. Then Travis was prompt in bringing out our food. And Tiffany made me a delicious chocolate martini to end the evening! Oh, and did I mention that for all the times I've come here I didn't realize they had an upstairs room until I used the women's bathroom upstairs. They also had a separate room behind the bar. Holy - could be the most rude place I have ever been. The manager was incredibly angry, made that we were from out of town and then berated his staff. The waitress actually apologized. Not sure why we stayed but we did, then watched him move two tables out after they sat at 9:30 and they closed at 10. He was angry and wanted to go home early. We walked in because we read they had balcony seating, however, when walking in apparently they didn't. We sat in the back. We ordered and the service was prompt and the server was a dear. I'm not sure if it was just me but I wasn't a fan of the coffee. It tasted a little stale and too dark. I asked for another and it tasted the same so I'm not sure if it's customary to drink it like this, however, didn't finish the cup. The blackened chicken Alfredo was superb. I used to go here a lot years ago when I went to New Orleans more often and finally returned yesterday. From then to now, I've always really enjoyed the poboys. Perfect bread and overstuffed. This time around I had a Chartres House RICH boy which is just a fried shrimp poboy with remoulade sauce plus bacon, bleu cheese crumbles and jalepeno. It's gorgeous! And I can't forget the fries, they're extra crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I also had charbroiled oysters which were delicious. The only downside is the crazy long wait for the food and the check. Maybe it's because we were on the balcony but it was unfortunately noticeably long enough for me to take a star off. read more

First and foremost, the staff is friendly and excellent. As a truck driver, it is hard to find places that will allow me to bring my Road Dog Ellie with me. This place is the best. They sat us on the outer perimeter of the lower level and they even brought her a bowl of water before my drink from the bar was ready. Good atmosphere, the muffuletta was fantastic!! First drink was, I'm afraid to say, a little weak. They made up for it in my second though without a doubt. I wish I could give them a better review, but I just can't; I had a terrible experience. The best part of the place was the hostess and the balcony. My boyfriend got the BBQ shrimp which he ordered because he thought it was going to come just BBQ'd but it ended up having some sort of sauce on it, which he liked but it was not what he was expecting and it gave him a very very bad stomach ache. I had the Taste of New Orleans and tried the etouffee, gumbo, and jambalaya - all of which gave me a meh experience: they were all kind of bland and the meat pieces were very very small. All just tasted like rice with slightly different gravy and seasonings. We sat outside on the balcony upstairs which we were very excited about and the best part of the experience...until a giant cockroach came crawling down the side of the wall. I understand it's a part of New Orleans but it came at the end of my meal and lets just say I was not happy. The waiter asked why I was standing in the middle of the room and I pointed at the bug, he half smushed it with his shoe and kept walking, while the bug was left to whither away on the balcony. Perhaps if I had tried a different dish and the cockroach hadn't interrupt my meal I would have been able to give 3 stars, but I don't think I will be back on my next trip to NOLA. read more

My friends and I enjoyed a pretty good dinner here while we were in New Orleans. We went in at around 6:30pm, and the place wasn't super busy (uncommon for the French Quarter at that time). They have a great selection of local beers! They have IPAs, stouts, etc. all on draft (I think they had 15 draft beers), and others in bottles and cans. Our meals were all pretty good, except the crawfish in the crawfish etouffee were absolutely tiny and a blue/gray color that worries us. They have a lot of fried food, but classics like their jumbalaya and gumbo are great choices. The New Orleans tasting trio is a great choice if you want to try a few of their classics. My friend who was a vegetarian had a harder time finding something to eat, but I think they had a vegetarian pasta that he ate. The service was fine, and the waitress gave us great recommendations. I would definitely come back here for lunch sometime, especially because of its great location. read more
