Overall, the food was pretty good. The chicken was both flavorful and juicy, as was the riblet. . The sides were good, the macaroni and cheese was the best of the three I ordered. The corn fritters would have been great but it seems they were a tad undercooked. I beat the lunch crowd by a bit, as I was leaving the line was almost to the door. This Fried Chicken was a delight to my palate. Fried golden brown with crispy crust and juicy chicken I truly enjoyed this chicken. I have not eaten Fried Chicken this good in many many years. I always eat the white meat or the breast and usually it could be dry but this was moist and extremely flavorful. I had potato salad and collard greens as my sides. Those did not disappoint me either. I love green vegetables and these were so flavorful. The potato salad was really good also. I will definitely be returning! read more

Heard about this great little chicken place that everyone was raving about. Over on WW White. Chatman's. So I went the first time about 3 months ago. Got the two piece dark special via their drive thru. People working there made it a joy to order. The chicken was so freaking good I was eating the rib bones cuz I was driving. Bones were good too!!! Been back 5 times now. 2 visits ago I got to meet Mr. Chatman. Didn't know it was him. He was there and greeted my friend and I, got us out drinks and served us. We were eating in so we got to read the stories about Chatman's beginnings and about the man himself. Again, We did not know it was Mr Chatman until he came back to our table and asked us if we had tried the new pork riblets. We said no and he said. "Let me see if I can get you some. I have some pull around here." He came back with two pork riblets (boneless and fried) and gave them to us. We ate them and told him how good they were. He went back to the kitchen area and I told my friend, "That's Mr Chatman." As we finished and cleaned our table we went up to him because he had come to say goodbye and I said, "You're Mr. Chatman aren't you!" He said. "Yes I am". For 30 minutes we talked to the most wonderful, unpretentious, unassuming, genuine and giving man I've ever met. He talked about his wife and his life. What an amazing man. An Angel on earth. We even shed tears together as odd as that may sound to you, but you feel a closeness with him. A familial bond. He's that easy to talk to. We said our goodbyes and I hope the next time I go, I see him again. The chicken is some of the best I've ever had. Hands down. The sides are all homemade and outstanding and can't be beat. Total flavor rush! Try them all! The people there are all friendly, professional, welcoming and attentive. Go to Chatman's. You won't be sorry and you WILL go back. Trust me. It's that good. I've heard about Chatman's Chicken for years. "You've got to try them. They're the best." Big words but could they really be that good. Well, I've tried most of the chicken places in town. In short, I LOVE fried chicken and have a personal ranking system of the best in town which takes into account the size of pieces, price, crust, flavor, greasiness, etc... Okay, I mean I crazy love fried chicken. So, I had chicken tenders from Chatman's (lemon pepper seasoning) today. I tried their bone in chicken earlier this year. What's my verdict? Tried it due to word of mouth from co-workers, Chicken was good but the restaurant needs a refresh and PEST control. We sat by the front window and saw roaches running up and down our empty chair. I get restaurants have pests but these bold roaches and the dirtiness of the environment really spoke more then the food. Not really a "drive across town" place that i was hoping for. I was totally disappointed in the restaurant this time around. It used to be my absolute must eat-fried-food-once-a-week place. The interior needs refurbishing badly--or lots of paint--as it just looks dirty. I ordered and sat waiting in the restaurant for over 30 minutes for my order. That was not my problem. I have to admire the owner mingling among the patrons checking with them to see how they were doing--but I was ignored. He walked past me three times--but i wasn't the chick with the tight blouse that he could look down--and I wasn't black. ?! I was appalled with my food when I got it home. I had a lot of food and spent a lot--fried livers, chicken, okra, poppers and corn fritters for three adults. We had one tiny container for eight large chicken livers. The livers left a strange bitter after-taste in my mouth--something was wrong with them. (I thought it was just me. You know how people's taste buds change?) I could not even get the second one down. Yucky!! The chicken and the batter were hard--as if they had been cooked too long. This dinner costing almost $31. went into the trash! Chatman's Chicken offers a nice selection of, well chicken and fish as well. The chicken itself is very similar to Church's. The chicken does seem to have a bit of a different spice to it. Although it's similar still. The fish also has a distinct spice to it. When I say spice I don't mean spicy. Although they do have spicy chicken available. Chatman's chickens claim to fame is definitely the corn fritters. You have to experience these bad boys to truly appreciate them. Inside dining is adequite as they do have a decent amount of tables. I wouldn't recommend eating in though. Be forewarned, if you order the fish you will HAVE TO go inside. But for chicken and everything else on the menu you can go through the drive thru. Mr. Chatman is relentless in his strive for great customer service. You're sure to get a big cheesy smile from whomever is taking your order. He has been a staple on the eastside of the city for a very long time now. Well after hearing great reviews from peers, I took my mom here to try it out. It looks like it use to be a "Long John Silvers". Mom ordered the gizzards and I had the riblets, we were both NOT impressed with all the hype! The riblets did not have any meat, mostly crusted bone and the gizzards were hard and chewy. The ONLY thing that was good was the potato salad. So over all experience, not so good :-( read more

The food is good. We go here frequently. It is dirty looking outside, however. Mr. Chatman is usually at the drive thru window. The workers there this last Sunday and were extremely rude. They told me drive thru opens at noon, I drove back up at 12:05, the woman at the window said Awwww Nah, we aint open! Ten more minutes! Then I came back thru one more time and she told a me few more minutes. I was able to order, they shoved it out the window at me, no thank you and when I got home the food was slopped into my containers and the gravy was leaking all over the place. So the sides here are extremely small. Not to mention that they weren't any good. The gentleman that took our order was nice but they don't seem to follow your order very well. For example, I ordered the two piece white with mac' n cheese and mashed potatoes with brown gravy and a drink of koolaide. I asked for the gravy to be put on the side and for no ice in my drink. Another gentleman actually filled the order but refused to listen to the young man who took my order on how I wanted it. So the gravy came on the mashed potatoes and ice in my drink. Now all of that could have been overlooked but the food was not good. My husband had the three piece mixed with potato salad and greens. First of all the sides were nearly non existent, that's how small they were. And they were so nasty. My husband only liked the potato salad. But his greens were gross, my Mac n cheese was watery like soup and tasteless and my mashed potatoes were tasteless as well even with the gravy. The chicken was good. Which is the only reason they got two stars from me. It was crispy and cooked well. Didn't taste like anything but luckily I had hot sauce to eat it with. The fried chicken is excellent, the fried pork may even be better. Great sides to choose from like the corn fritters that are sweet, my favorite. If you want good fried chicken this is a must try restaurant. The service is fast and friendly. I had previously tried all the fast food chains for fried chicken and settled on the one that was least greasy. Chatman's chicken and pork is significantly better than the chains. They will even add lemon pepper flavoring if you like and that's very good too. Very tasty fried chicken. The gizzards were also good. However, the sides were not good at all. The collared greens tasted like they came from a can. The yams and mac and cheese were nothing special. The portion sizes were very tiny on the sides. The fried okra was actually good. The sweet potato pie tasted like it came from a grocery store. Tried Chatmans after reading the reviews last week. The drive thru line was very long, when I arrived, so I was expecting great food. The wait was not long... but... I ordered a 2 piece mixed plate. There were new prices on the menu at the drive thru. They are higher than the prices on line. A 2 piece white plate is $10. With my order, I received 2 small pieces of chicken, a very small side of yams that seemed to be covered in juice. They were not sweet by any meams and the juice looked like water. I ordered green beans. Another small, bland side order. They had no seasoning, no meat or onion flavor and no mmmmppphh. I was eager to taste the chicken, as the website boasts that they marinade the chicken for 21 hours. After tasting it, I was instantly disappointed. The skin was dry, and hard. My other piece was extra greasy and both had no flavor. My wife immediately said "Church's Chicken is better than this!" I'm not a fan of Church's but I would have to agree. We wanted to try the famous mac n cheese... they were out. Asked for cheese poppers... They were out. Asked for their sweet potatoe pie... Guess what... They were out! I'm surprised they had chicken. The only thing that tasted normal was the sweet tea and the roll. I drove 30 minutes out of my way to try this food. Sad to say, I will not be back. I'm really trying to understand how so many people rant and rave about this food? Some say "Its the BEST in San Antonio!" Well, if this is the best, I dont want to see the worst! I usually don't write reviews but after the experience that I have had with chatman chicken I feel that this one's is necessary. My family have not been to this establishment in about fifteen years only because we dont live close to the area. Well yesterday my wife ask me if I wanted to try Chatman's for dinner and I agreed, I wish I hadn't. The eating experience was horrible the chicken was very dark in color and smelled like the cooking oil hadn't been changed to clean oil in a while. The corn fritters were soaking in oil, the dinner rolls were flat and very hard. So with that said we did not eat the merchandise, but I decided to call the next day which is this morning and spoke to Mr. chairman himself and to my surprise was very disappointed in his response to my complaint. First his told me we should have called yesterday, and today it's to late to track the order and that people is always looking to get something for free. First of all I've been working on my job for 36 years and I'm noting looking to get anything for free. I always like to support black own businesses but after the conversation I had today I will not support this one. The attitude of the owner was very unprofessional.
