Tried the vegetarian sandwich which tasted fresh and was pretty hearty and same goes for my friends turkey and cranberry sandwich No seating inside and a few tables outside. Good place to grab a sandwich before hitting the beach, but the patio was nice too. Dave has a long history with and a great care for this shop and it really shows. The service is incredibly kind, and they go out of your way to make you feel special. The pork, beef, AND lamb are all cooked low and slow in house, which is not something most Boar's Head delis can say. I loved the lamb sandwich (5/5) and split one with a friend along with a small chicken salad (4/5) for lunch. There's seriously high attention to detail and high attention to flavor at the Cheese Shop. The tomatoes in my sandwich were SO fresh and added a perfect bite, there was just enough sauce to enhance all the other flavors, and the meat was a satisfying portion. The chicken salad had a few chewy skins, but was otherwise somehow so light yet so robustly flavored. I'm not a sandwich person at ALL, but this place taught me to appreciate the ingredient synergy you get when everything is fresh and lovingly assembled. The outdoor patio is a blissful place to sit, enjoy the breeze, and really take a moment to rest while you finish a great sandwich. He went above and beyond to make sure we had the best experience possible. First time eating here, and I must say the quality of deli meat, cheese and bread were all on point! I ordered the turkey + cheese + avocado on a french roll with the works, and added bacon. A hot crunchy yet gooey grilled cheese sandwich and some warm savory spiced lentil soup was in order when I stopped in the Cheese Shop. More importantly, you can create your own grilled cheese or choose one from the menu. For mine, I went for a mild cheddar and Jarlsburg on some rye bread for $6.50. I can't remember the price of the soup but I am sure it was under $4, but don't quote me on that. The rye bread had a great grilled golden brown color and a terrific crunch. The rye bread was of good quality and had a very nice caraway flavor. Both the cheeses were very well melted and had that appealing gooeyiness that comes along with a great grilled cheese. The lentil soup had a variety of great flavors, including some great seasoning and a variety of good herbs. The lentils were tender and had a great earthy flavor. The soup also came with a variety of other items, including tomatoes, onions, carrots, and a bit of celery. A great soup to enjoy on a cool day. The employees who work here are quite enthusiastic and friendly. They also bake some great cookies. If you're in La Jolla and craving a sandwich, this is the place to go! It took me FOREVER to find parking on a Saturday afternoon but I finally managed to find one on a residential street a couple blocks away. When I walked in with my friends, the shop was SWARMING with hungry people waiting to order, waiting to pay, waiting for their sandwiches. I decided to get a turkey jack avocado sandwich, ginger beer (which is non-alcoholic btw and has an awesome gingery taste!) and one of their famous oatmeal cookies. While waiting, I admired all the old school candies they have for sale that reminded me of my childhood, and the huge eclectic variety of beverages and soda pops. They also have foreign candy! Pretty cooool! My friends and I took our sandwiches to go and walked to the La Jolla shores only a few blocks down to enjoy our sandwiches there. And they were DELICIOUS! Not the best but still, very very good. They put a generous amount of avocado in there too! And the oatmeal cookie was unique, chewy, and very.. The Cheese Shop is close to my idea of a perfect sandwich place - it is old school, a little divey, and excellent. I live a short drive away, but La Jolla Shores can be tough to access and especially to park. Intrigued by the Yelp reviews and photos, today I finally made it. The place was jammed, and of course the guy in front of me had to order a whole swarm of sandwiches. I knew it would be a wait (surprisingly short, actually) but nevertheless I stuck it out and was quite hungry when my Pork Loin sandwich and my wife's Chicken Salad sandwich came up. I ordered to go so I raced home hoping the melted jack cheese and hot parts wouldn't cool off too much before I could get into the sandwich. The sandwich was great, and well worth the drive (and the parking). The hot mustard was a great complement to the pork loin, and the crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, tangy red onion and rich mayo were perfect in the background. The sandwich was messier than I expected but I didn't care at all. My wife's chicken salad was fine - maybe a little boring and not as enjoyable as mine, but still good. We'll be back. I picked up the lamb sandwich, it was pricier than it was on the to-go menu, $10.25 to be exact. I wanted to add Havarti cheese, the lady asked if I meant to replace the current cheese with Havarti and I said no, I want to add it. She wrote on the paper... but when having the sandwich, the other cheese was replaced with Havarti. DOH! I was actually looking forward to having extra cheese from the cheese shop but no go. oh wellz.... as for the rest of the sandwich, the lamb slices was a bit lacking on quantity. I think they fill it up with cucumber, onion and tomatoes and then put on just a bit of lamb. It was good and light but missing that cheese taste. OK.... I just had a bite of the oatmeal cookie.... wow!!!!!! these things are good!!! just based on this... i'm changing my review from a 4 star to a 5 star. These people rock!! The sandwiches were very good. We did call on a Saturday to preorder and it is a good thing we did because we called at 12;30 and they had a 45 minute wait. They were a little disorganized but the food was good, the turkey was excellent. When I order a sandwich I usually get roast beef but they say they are famous for their turkey so that is what I got and it was very good. They didn't know where my order was when I got there and it turns out it was ready to go. The sold me a soda that you need a bottle opener for (I did/nt know it needed an opener) and didn't open it for me so that was a waste, and we had nothing to drink for one of the kids so they had to share because of it but those things happen, I mostly care about whether the food is good or not. read more

Very nostalgic feel inside this Cheese Shop. I love it! They sell bottled sodas of various kinds. They even have Jones Soda! They also sell all these snacks and sweets from the past which was pretty cool, bringing back the days when I was a little kid. Seating is primarily outside and it was kind of limited. We just ordered our food and walked down to the beach to eat it. I ordered their Roast Pork Loin sandwich and boy was it awesome. They cooked the pork loin very well, very moist and tender. It's difficult to cook pork loin right. Most will tend to overcook it making it super dry or there's not enough seasoning to it. This place did a good job with the pork loin. I really liked their in-house spicy mustard they used as the condiment in my sandwich. Gave it a nice kick and tartness taste to it. I'm not generally a fan of mustard but this was an exception. I also got to try their Turkey Jack Avocado sandwich. That was also pretty good as well. Very moist and well cooked turkey. I love avocado and any sandwich with avocado in it is like heaven in the mouth for me. I definitely would recommend those two sandwiches. The portion is pretty generous for the price they are asking as well and for those that might want to know, you can actually do a half order (half sandwich) for half the price of sandwich. Subway isn't as cool as this place because they charge their 6 inch subs more than half of 12 inch subs. Lame!! Definitely a nice little sandwich shop to try out! read more

We bought 2 sandwiches, one roast beef and one chicken salad. The roast beef one was very good. The chicken salad ( usually one of my favorites) was mixed so that the chicken was completely shredded and looked like tuna. It had sliced onion and tomato on it also which are not usually on this type of sandwich. It was lacking in salt and I ended up throwing it away. The Cheese Shop is a real hidden gem. It's a bit of an insitution, in that been around for nearly 50 years, but it's a little, casual, family-owned spot with good quality food. I've been enjoying their soups and sandwiches since I first moved to San Diego nearly 25 years ago and our firm ordered their sandwiches in for lunch, and they're still as good as they always were. I walked in this morning, and the aromas of their homemade curried lentil and vegetable soup filled the shop. The owner, Dave, told me it would be ready in an hour, so we came back for lunch and tried it - it was delicious. My daughter and I each got the soup + 1/2 sandwich special, which was perfect. She had the vegetarian Evergreen sandwich w/ cheese on Pumpernickel, which she said was great, and I had their famous turkey, monterey jack and avocado sandwich on sourdough, which was very good, too. Their famous flourless oatmeal cookie was a great way to top it off. Dave and the rest of the staff is super friendly and helpful. Will definiely be stopping in next time we're up in La Jolla Shores! read more

Solid 3.5 stars. I really love sandwiches, as in I could eat one every day and not get tired of them. I was looking forward to trying a new sandwich place since I always love a good place to grab picnic food near the beach. I called my order in and the guy who took my order was very nice and clearly read back my order, which I really appreciated. The sandwiches were ready when we got there and they had the right toppings, which was a plus. After I paid and left, I realized that I was charged a dollar each for the pickles on the side (or they just plain overcharged me for the sandwiches), either of which is very frustrating, especially for sandwiches that are already $9 each. The sandwich itself was good- not great, but not bad either. I got the turkey jack avocado on white bread. The avocado was fresh, but the other toppings weren't at the top of their game. The tomato wasn't very ripe, and the lettuce was a little soggy. The turkey was good, but they use the thick cut slices that taste more like thanksgiving turkey than the thinner sandwich slices. The bread was okay, I couldn't tell if it was stale or if it had been lightly toasted because the outside of it was not soft. They did put a lot of turkey and cheese on it, which I appreciated for how expensive it was. Overall, it's a cute shop in a good location near the beach. Sandwich was okay, but nothing spectacular, also pretty pricey. Honestly I think there are too many other great sandwich places for me to come here again. read more
