When I saw this place yesterday on my way to Ding Tea, I immediately thought this was the same thing as Uncle Tetsu, the japanese jiggly cheesecake, but it was almost a lighter version of castella and it was amazing! It was super light and airy and the reminiscing of castella brought back childhood memories. The only thing though, it's quite costly for $8. Service was first and foremost unsatisfactory. The young girl working the counter kept slamming the small window closed as if we would try to crawl in or something. She was very curt and unfriendly. Ordered 3 creamtella cakes and when we finally got home after our 7 hour drive, we noticed she gave us 3 cheesetella cakes. There is no cream in the middle. Randomly found this place walking into a super dead korean mall/plaza. The reason why I was pulled into buying a cake was because of the smell and 2. it reminded me of the same cake I had in Taiwan. I saw one yelper said this is korean? I first had this experience in Taiwan, so I'm not sure the origins of this fluffy cake. Either way, it wasn't at all the same as the first time I had it. The cheesecake was a little too "eggy" for my taste but I was really fluffy. I like Mr. Tetsu's cheesecake a lot better. The strawberry milk was very good. You order inside and wait outside to pick up your goods. There's two cute gold tables outside and a few chairs. It's right next to Sweet Box and in The Source so parking is not an issue. Since this is a mall there's restrooms all around. Tried the original and it was fluffy but dry. We also had two drinks: sky lemonade and flower fizz. The sky lemonade looked pretty but tasted like sprite and the flower fizz was beautiful yet mediocre. The lining up system is disorganized. One step into Cheesetella and you're already at the cashier. Once you're done ordering, you have to squeeze through the impatient customers waiting in back of you; it's uncomfortable and there's no personal space or room to grab my wallet out of my bag without feeling someone's neck breathing down on me. Maybe the line could start outside or wrap around the side of the establishment? I'm sure Cheesetella will get things right and be more consistent in the latter. I was excited to participate in the media day event that was announced on their instagram account. I had to RSVP and was then informed of the date and times of the cake testing and the food battle. I was under the impression that this event would be organized and only for influencers/foodies who RSVP'd. I was expectant and let down by this experience. First, the event was running late. Second, we were expectant of a tasting of most of their items but only tried 2 flavors (original, cheesetella) + an unspecified tea. Third, there was no point in RSVPing because they just set the samples down on a table and everyone (people passing by) was free to grab a sample (it was a frenzy!). Fourth, the food/eating battle was only for a 'famous' food eater.. entertaining I guess?? but I would've liked to know more about this part of the media day if it was exclusive. Fifth, my friend wanted to order 2 of their items and was told that it was not available and/or she'd have to wait an hour+ for it. This makes absolutely no sense as a business that just opened AND the fact that it was in the middle of the day... LASTLY, their items were DRY and tasted unimpressive. Good food spoiled by terrible service. I ordered the spongecake with cream filling, and the matcha yuzu iced tea. I was told it would be anywhere from 10-15 minutes. Pretty simple, right? What was supposed to be pretty simple turned into a 30 minute wait. I get it, you just opened, still sorting things out, etc. But when I asked for my drink after 15 minutes (because, come on, it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to brew matcha tea, put in a cup with yuzu and ice and serve), they said they were still making it!!! Wtf?! As I waited (and waited...and waited...), a group of people gathered around the window like a horde of zombies gathers around humans, looking for food. They were ALL angry about their own long wait. Anyway, I got my dessert, and it was good: think Sara Lee poundcake but not as sweet or hard. The cream was ok, nothing to write home about. The matcha yuzu iced tea was too tart, because I was inhaling all the yuzu that had settled at the bottom due to the poor job of mixing it in. It was ok after I mixed it up a bit. Had I not waited for 30 minutes, this would have been 3.5 stars at least.
