We decided to celebrate here on a Saturday evening after receiving news of a promotion at work. This was the perfect place for a last minute celebration. We were seated right away by a friendly host. The restaurant had a fabulous ambiance for a weekend evening-- wait staff bustling about while diners chatted happily and Christmas lights and decorations filled the corners of the rooms. We were seated in the back room, near a gigantic Christmas tree and were greeted quickly by our server. She brought us a bottle of Rose and answered all of our questions about the menu. We both decided to order pasta - as per our server's recommendation, and we were not disappointed! The tortellini was filled with tender short rib and the penne had a hearty and flavorful ragu. It was obvious that both pastas had been made in-house as they tasted very fresh. For dessert we split the cookie skillet sundae and could not have been happier with the ending to our meal. I'm a regular at Chef Geoff as it is my neighborhood home! I love going there and knowing the names. My neighbors and I have been talking about the changes there as the workers are quickly flipping. We all mentioned how the new female manager (none of us have met her) just stands there, crosses her arms, and just seems to glare at the workers. The dynamics of the place has changed. It seems to have started once she started. Erin is wonderful at the bar as she is chaotic but she cares beyond measure about every person. I miss Kevin. Nanette is fantastic and has been there forever. Chris is a fantastic manager along with Katrina and the newcomer Tasha. They interact and help all the workers with a smile!! The food is consistent and if you're not happy, they take care of it. Chef Geoff will continue to be my second home but I want to see the old happiness back. Not sure why Trevor left but the new manager needs to totally step up her game as she seems miserable and not a positive force at Chef Geoff!! Not sure what they were thinking when they brought her here. If they're thinking this is a place for younger people, they're wrong. At least 80% of us are neighborhood and older. Wonderful place but the enjoyable vibe has changed. Prese being it back and change the new manager to one of your other places!! I'm here several days of the week and have still to meet the new manager! Why doesn't she interact with customers like the other managers do! Just because you're in charge doesn't need to be that you're miserable and not nice to people!! read more

We came in without a reservation on a busy Saturday night and the staff kindly accommodated us. The kitchen gave us a bowl of delicious gumbo (instead of just a cup) upon request, whipped up their delicious kale/feta power salad, and a bacon cheeseburger. I ordered the Crispy Calamari appetizer. This calamari is crispy, crunchy, and fresh. For my entree, I ordered the Shrimp Scampi Linguine. The pasta is made daily at their sister restaurant Lias. This scampi was so good. The white wine butter sauce just made me want to take bite after bite. For dessert, I had the Peach Crumble which is almond and oat streusel served with salted caramel ice cream. I ate so much, I was genuinely stuffed. I also had left overs. Overall, Chef Geoff's is a great choice for lunch or dinner. read more

I've been going to Geoff's for probably 20+ years, it's been a staple as a regular easy going out spot, but this is the first time I've reviewed it. Why? Because I had drinker/drinks by the bar the other night and the clash between food/service and the new ambiance/decor recently hit me like a ton of bricks. Food is always good and consistent; what you expect from a neighborhood American restaurant. There are some great menu items that are sadly no longer on there despite being favorites, but most can be secretly ordered. ;) Regular deals/specials make it an easy choice to visit when considering your dining options. The new design changes however left me feeling sad, it felt like it was either last call the entire night or like Geoff's was closing down. The new paint color is so dark that it sucked up any light and gave the feeling of a dive bar/speak easy without the charm, and there was no additional lighting to compensate. The bar area, which has always been the highlight of the space, was sad; a paint by numbers looking wallpaper has replaced the mirror which helped reflect light and open up the space visually, there was almost no light behind the bar which normally highlighted the different bottles and keepsakes, and a way for patrons to engage/try new drinks. The current sparse liquor bottle display emphasized the sad "going out of business" look. If you're sitting at the bar it's almost uncomfortable to look at. The music was a low volume with hints of a Morrissey vibe. Look, I'm all for moody, but not from a normally upbeat neighborhood happy place, which it has been for years. It's probably what people need after a few years of somber, depressing times. I think my review would read differently if I'd dined on their awesome patio that night or perhaps gone during a sunny day. Our server Erin was energetic, upbeat and attentive. This place is a bit more formal for an American Diner. I went with my friends and we wanted indoor dining because it was cold, but the indoor dining was definitely a stark contrast from the outdoor dining they offer. The outdoor seating was nice and casual, with high strung lights everywhere, but inside, there's the white table cloths and a much calmer energy. I got the calamari and the American Burger. They were both really good, but I honestly expected more variety and more of a flavorful spin on the dishes they have, given it's a highly reputable restaurant. They definitely could have more fun with the dishes, but to the standard of an American diner, Chef Geoff's definitely places high. read more

Wonderful. Chef Geoff does a wonderful meal in general. I never have anything bad to say. But the excelled today. Cameron our server was wonderful helping to pick the perfect choices. We had Thanksgiving out this year. I was hesitant because, well, no left overs. Such a sad state. However not only was the food delicious but the portion was amazing. A group went to Chef Geoff's on New Mexico Avenue in DC for Thanksgiving lunch. The service was exceptional - Cameron, our server, was very attentive. We had several menu options to choose from. The food was melt in your mouth fantastic. And the ambiance was comfortable and inviting with very little noise from the tables around us. We were a party of six and we were able to have a conversation with each other without having to yell across each other. I highly recommend Chef Geoff's for any occasion or no particular occasion at all. Just go for the food. Super yummy! read more

Chef Geoff's has been a favorite for years. We usually sit at the bar and often time our visits with happy hour. The variety and quality of the food is consistently good although I miss the smaller wine glasses on the happy hour menu and some of the small bite choices seem odd (mango fries). The pizza is always excellent. The biggest disappointment though is the bar decor. Coloring book-style wallpaper (pass the crayons) replaces the mirrors behind the bar, making the bar area dark. The mirrors that were once there reflected the light but now the bar resembles a dim-lit dive bar. Thankfully, the bar staff brighten the atmosphere. Erin and Kevin are welcoming, accommodating, and friendly. But, please rethink the bar design. Make it classy and happy again. read more

Mari, who was our server, and has been there for a while, was as always perfect and amazing. Service 10 out of 5... For dessert I had the Apple with cinnamon ice cream which was to die for. This is my go-to restaurant. I work nearby, so I have every reason to get tired of it. But after over ten years I can say that I have yet to have a bad meal or encounter cranky wait staff. First time attending chef geoffs. We went for brunch on Saturday afternoon. They were tremendous amount of choices for both kids and adults. Anything from breakfast food to lunch style foods. They even went off the brunch menu to have my daughter try chicken Parmesan, which she enjoyed. Erin, our waitress was very friendly and accommodating with choices and suggestions. The chicken, Benedict, omelette, and Shawarma bowl was what we tried, and all were excellent. We will definitely go again when we're in the area. It's within walking distance of American university. There's validated parking. Would also recommend checking out their sister restaurant that is in Chevy Chase Maryland Lias as well. Thanks for a great afternoon. It's always a joy to discover a dish you never knew existed. This is exactly what happened when I joined a few friends out to dinner at Chef Geoff's--a high-end American restaurant just steps from the campus of American University. I only tried one item on the vast and sophisticated menu, but could not have been more pleased with my order. Cauliflower steak, something I'd never had the joy of trying before, is a great hunk of vegetable sprinkled with seasoning and roasted in an oven until golden-brown. While real steaks such as a filet mignon are also available on the menu, I can't imagine any red meat tasting better than this. My plate came artfully drizzled in chili aioli, with enough golden raisins to open a trail mix factory. I appreciated the way the tart, sour, salty capers cut through the creaminess of the sauce and brought out the freshness of the cauliflower "fillet". Chopped pine nuts brought the dish together with a hint of crunch, making for an exquisite bite unlike anything I had previously experienced. This is a dish worth splurging for, well worth its price tag of $19. The atmosphere of Chef Geoff's is classy but unpretentious, a comforting playlist of '90s and '00s hits playing in the background. This institution has positioned itself as a go-to special occasion eatery in Cathedral Heights, more upscale than most Tenleytown student favorites. I hope to celebrate more at Chef Geoff's in the future, and order their impeccable roasted cauliflower steak once again. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for years. I finally placed a takeout order through a meal delivery service -- and did so for a dish I don't even typically eat, namely the meatloaf. Overall, I was very pleased! The meatloaf was extremely well seasoned, and the accompanying broccoli, mashed potatoes, and mushroom gravy make for a very satisfying and filling meal. Even if you're someone who doesn't normally eat meatloaf (as I don't), you will probably enjoy this dish! My only complaints (and the reason I shaved off a star) are: (1) The entire dish was stuffed into a plastic to-go container that was much too small. All the food was mixed together, with the broccoli being completely hidden by and sandwiched between the meat and the potatoes -- where the meatloaf itself was hastily torn in half and stuffed in the box in separate pieces. Presentation was 1 star for sure, and that's being generous. (2) I got an upset stomach after eating my meal. I don't know if it was anything in particular in this dish, but I hadn't otherwise had very much to eat that day at all. So it had to be this dish. Not sure if it was a fluke, a mild case of food poisoning (to the extent those can be mild), or if my digestive system just isn't that used to red meat and decided to rebel. Whatever it was, I still give this dish high ratings overall. Would welcome the opportunity to visit the actual restaurant for dine-in service in post-COVID times to try other fare. read more
